Morrisons in Netherfield reintroduces rationing as second wave panic-buying hits supermarkets

A Netherfield supermarket is to reintroduce the rationing of essential goods.

Morrisons, which has a store on Victoria Retail Park, will now be limiting consumers buying products such as toilet roll, disinfectants and bleach to a maximum of three items.

All the major supermarkets had introduced temporary restrictions in March after shelves were stripped bare of essentials such as toilet rolls in the weeks leading up to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Morrisons admitted they would be reintroducing the measures in a response to a tweet from a customer.

The supermarket giant tweeted: “We have seen stocking up on certain products like soup, pasta, cleaning items, etc. Due to this we’re now introducing some max caps into store so we can ensure good availability for all our customers.”

A Morrisons spokesman later told Reuters: “We’ve got decent stock levels but we want to be sure that they are available for everyone.”

25 new cases were reported in Nottingham city.

Yesterday, new curfew laws came into force across the borough, with pubs being forced to shut their doors at 10pm.

The app can now be downloaded for most phones via the Apple App Store or Google Play

Asda says sorry after telling man with dementia ‘to leave’ Arnold store for not wearing mask

Supermarket giant Asda has apologised after telling a man who has dementia to leave their store in Arnold for not wearing a mask.

Amanda Jeffrey told BBC News that supermarket staff challenged her and partner, Aubrey Green, shortly after they entered the store on Front Street when they noticed he wasn’t wearing the required face covering.

She said staff then refused to accept a ‘hidden disability card’ and they were told to leave the shop.

Face mask
Asda recently said it would get tough on shoppers not wearing masks in store

The incident comes a day after the supermarket giant revealed it would now get tough with those not wearing masks in their stores.

Asda has since apologised to the couple, saying ‘they made a mistake on this occasion and that they wouldn’t be challenged again’.

In a statement to BBC News, Asda said its staff “are fully trained to follow the latest government guidance”.

“They will politely ask all customers to wear a face covering, unless they have a reason not to,” a spokesman said.

“Clearly we got it wrong on this occasion and we have spoken to Ms Jeffrey to apologise for her experience.”

HMRC coronavirus refund scam warning to people in Gedling borough

People in Gedling borough are being warned of a HMRC scam appearing to offer financial help following the coronavirus pandemic.

Scam-busters Action Fraud have revealed that fraudsters are posing as HMRC and telling people how they can offer them money.

Scammers are contacting people in the borough via email to inform them that they are due a tax refund – sometimes worth hundreds of pounds.

Action Fraud has now released a warning, explaining exactly how the scam works.

Victims are being sent an email, which claims to be from HMRC.

The email claims that as a precaution against Covid-19, the government has established a new tax refund programme for dealing with the coronavirus outbreak.

Fraud
Fraudsters could be after your bank details – be alert!

They tell people that they are due the tax refund, but require proof of address and identification to claim it.

The scammers then have access to people’s bank accounts and private details, meaning they could have money stolen.

Action Fraud added that HMRC will never text, email or phone people for bank details, PINs or passwords.

A spokesman said: “You must avoid clicking on links in suspicious looking emails, and never reply to messages asking you for bank details of personal information.

“You also shouldn’t respond to anyone asking you to send a picture to prove your identity.

“If you receive messages like this, it is a scam and you should not respond. Instead, delete the email and block the contact.”

Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome loses Labour role after voting against overseas operations bill

Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome is one of three junior shadow ministers who have been sacked for siding with Jeremy Corbyn to vote against the second reading of a controversial armed forces bill, according to a report in The Guardian.

Ms Whittome, who represents Mapperley voters, joined with Jeremy Corbyn and 14 other Socialist Campaign group MPs in breaking the party’s whip by voting against the second reading of a controversial armed forces bill.

Beth Winter and Olivia Blake joined Ms Whittome in defying the whip, which called on Labour MPs to abstain on the overseas operations bill.

The legislation aims to introduce a presumption against prosecution for British soldiers serving abroad.

Whittome defended her decision in an interview with ITV’s Robert Peston.

She said: “I thought the bill was a matter of conscience.

She said the bill was “anti-veteran, anti-human rights, and would effectively decriminalise torture – and that’s why I voted against it”.

She did say that it was “reasonable” for colleagues to decide to abstain and try to amend the legislation during the later stages of its passage through parliament.

Gedling Eye has contacted Nadia Whittome’s office for a comment.

Dozens of vehicles stopped during police night of action against speeding motorists across Gedling borough

Dozens of speeding drivers were stopped by police yesterday during a night of action as part of a road safety crackdown Gedling borough.

The night of action was organised by Gedling’s dedicated team of pro-active Special Constables, who hit the streets once again yesterday (Tuesday 22 ), as they continued their commitment to reduce speed and antisocial driving across the borough.

During the night of action, the team, who were joined by two Sergeants from the Bridewell Custody Suite in Nottingham, checked more than 20 vehicles.

Longdale Lane in Ravenshead became one of the latest locations to be targeted following feedback from members of the local community, resulting in eight motorists being issued with Notices of Intended Prosecution for considerably exceeding the speed limit.

The team also revisited Mansfield Road on the A60, which led to a further ten motorists being served with Notices of Intended Prosecution. On the same stretch of road, a motorist was observed by the team driving in an anti-social manner, which resulted in them being issued with a Section 59 Notice, meaning that if similar behaviour is observed again in the future, their vehicle could be seized.

Checks were also completed in the Carlton Hill area. One motorist was caught doing 47mph in the 30 zone, whilst a further five motorists were issued with Notices of Intended Prosecution.

One vehicle was also seized during the operation for having no insurance. The driver now faces six penalty points and a fine of up to £5,000.

Special Sergeant Ashley Wagstaffe, who leads the team of Specials across Gedling, said: “Last night’s operation is a continuation of recent events across the Borough.

“We’re committed to driving-down crime, with speeding as well as anti-social driving and uninsured vehicles being identified as a local priority following feedback from the community.

“These issues can clearly have an adverse impact within neighbourhoods, and we often see the consequences of careless and reckless driving across the area.

“We’re keen to use a combination of education and enforcement tactics to reduce traffic-related offences across Gedling.

“We regularly educate motorists at the roadside and more formally through speeding awareness sessions.

“However in some instances, as seen during our latest patrols, enforcement does take place when motorists are caught significantly exceeding the speed limit and putting other motorists and pedestrians at risk.

”The patrols come following reports from members of the public, with the Local Policing Team being committed in tackling issues that are of the greatest concern. Enforcement sites are identified as a direct result of public feedback and intelligence.

People of Gedling borough are urged to download the new COVID-19 tracing app

Health chiefs are urging residents in Gedling borough to download and use the NHS Covid-19 ‘Test and Trace’ app when it launches nationally tomorrow (September 24).

The app features six key features, which will help users and their community to reduce the risks posed by Coronavirus.

Using contact tracing, the app detects and logs other nearby app users. It also enables all users to ‘check in’ when they visit a venue by scanning a QR code displayed on posters at the entrance. Both features then inform the user via an alert if someone they have come in to contact with later tests positive for Coronavirus.

The app also allows people to report symptoms and order a coronavirus test, as well as helping the NHS trace individuals that may have coronavirus.

In addition, the app will help the NHS understand if the virus is spreading in a particular area, and so enable local authorities to respond quickly to stop it spreading further and ultimately help save lives. It does this while protecting a user’s anonymity. Nobody, including the government, will know who or where a particular user is.

Jonathan Gribbin, Director of Public Health for Nottinghamshire, said: “To play your part in stopping the spread, I am asking everyone to download and use the new NHS Covid-19 app.

“Along with the Test and Trace Service it will play a major part in tracking and preventing the spread of Covid-19.

“With coronavirus cases rising in the UK in the last few weeks it is essential everyone capitalise on the benefits the app can bring to help protect themselves and those around them.”

To download the NHS Covid-19 app, search for ‘NHSCovid-19’ in the App Store/Google Play Store on your phone from Thursday.

Police appeal after two cars stolen in Arnold

Police are investigating after two cars were stolen on Friday (September 18) night in Arnold

Residents are now being asked to be vigilant after the vehicles were stolen during two separate burglaries in the Cross Street and Furlong Street areas.

In both incidents offenders have got inside the houses and stolen car keys before taking the vehicles.

Neighbourhood Inspector Chris Pearson said: “We’re taking these incidents really seriously and we will be increasing police patrols.

“Burglary incidents can be incredibly distressing and leaves the home owner with a series of practical and emotional issues to resolve. If a vehicle is stolen it then results in the owner being without transport and often unable to get to work.

Inspector Chris Pearson

“Whilst crimes like this are rare, vehicles are a tempting target for a house burglar and can be stolen in a matter of seconds.

“Thieves are often looking for an easy opportunity and simple security measures can help to deter them.

“I’d ask our residents to keep keys out of sight and not in your front door or hallway. Don’t leave windows open on ground floors and consider a simple security camera or light which can often act as a deterrent.

“Clearly we are very keen to find the person responsible for these crimes and would particularly like to speak to anyone who might have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area over recent days.

”If you do have any information, please contact us on 101 quoting incident number 135 of 19 September. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
