Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome loses Labour role after voting against overseas operations bill

Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome is one of three junior shadow ministers who have been sacked for siding with Jeremy Corbyn to vote against the second reading of a controversial armed forces bill, according to a report in The Guardian.

Ms Whittome, who represents Mapperley voters, joined with Jeremy Corbyn and 14 other Socialist Campaign group MPs in breaking the party’s whip by voting against the second reading of a controversial armed forces bill.

The legislation aims to introduce a presumption against prosecution for British soldiers serving abroad.

Whittome defended her decision in an interview with ITV’s Robert Peston.

She said: “I thought the bill was a matter of conscience.

She said the bill was “anti-veteran, anti-human rights, and would effectively decriminalise torture – and that’s why I voted against it”.

She did say that it was “reasonable” for colleagues to decide to abstain and try to amend the legislation during the later stages of its passage through parliament.

  1. The Labour Party hates Britain. The recent talk of them becoming more patriotic is shown to be a joke. They will not win elections until they back Britain instead of terrorists seeking to destroy us.
