Asda says sorry after telling man with dementia ‘to leave’ Arnold store for not wearing mask

Supermarket giant Asda has apologised after telling a man who has dementia to leave their store in Arnold for not wearing a mask.

Amanda Jeffrey told BBC News that supermarket staff challenged her and partner, Aubrey Green, shortly after they entered the store on Front Street when they noticed he wasn’t wearing the required face covering.

She said staff then refused to accept a ‘hidden disability card’ and they were told to leave the shop.

Asda recently said it would get tough on shoppers not wearing masks in store

The incident comes a day after the supermarket giant revealed it would now get tough with those not wearing masks in their stores.

Asda has since apologised to the couple, saying ‘they made a mistake on this occasion and that they wouldn’t be challenged again’.

In a statement to BBC News, Asda said its staff “are fully trained to follow the latest government guidance”.

“They will politely ask all customers to wear a face covering, unless they have a reason not to,” a spokesman said.

“Clearly we got it wrong on this occasion and we have spoken to Ms Jeffrey to apologise for her experience.”

  1. Disgraceful behaviour, arrogant staff letting a bit of power go to their heads. This is discrimination against disabled people. This is against the law. The police should investigate Asda.
