Calverton man charged after ’tills attacked’ at Woodborough Post Office

A Calverton man is being brought before court charged in connection with a break-in at a Post Office and shop.

A quantity of cash was stolen after tills were attacked at the address in Main Street, Woodborough, on the morning of September 26 2022.

Following detailed inquiries a suspect was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.

John Wilson, aged 38, of Labray Road, Calverton, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court yesterday (9) charged with burglary.

He was remanded in custody and is next due to appear at the same court on January 3, 2023.

Inspector Mark Stanley, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This great result was achieved thanks to some fantastic work by neighbourhood policing team members who really pulled out the stops to get a suspect charged as soon as possible.

“It’s a shining example of our determination to improve the lives of our communities by cracking down on distressing crimes, such as burglary, as well as working hard to prevent crime before it happens.

“As a force we understand how devastating burglaries can be which is why we will always take these kind of reports extremely seriously.

“We want to reassure the people of Nottinghamshire we will continue to pursue those committing burglaries and remain committed to catching those responsible and bringing them to justice.”

Police shoplifter crackdown continues after thefts from Gedling borough stores

Police say they will continue to crackdown on shoplifters after two wanted suspects were arrested in connection with reported thefts from Gedling stores.

Officers detained a 44-year-old man at his home in Bilborough during the early hours of today (9) following thefts from stores in the borough between September 30 and October 31.

Stores in Stapleford and Bilborough were also targeted.

It follows the previous arrest of a 40-year-old man, on October 31, in connection with the incidents.

Inspector Mark Stanley, neighbourhood policing inspector responsible for local policing in the Gedling borough area, said: “We know what an impact shoplifting can have on our local communities and businesses and we remain committed to tackling and reducing shop theft as one of our local policing priorities.

“As part on our ongoing work we are continuing to work closely with retail partners to support them, providing crime prevention advice, as well as locating and arresting suspects. Shoplifting is not a victimless crime and can have a significant impact on retailers both financially and emotionally.

“We continue to treat shop theft seriously and we will deal robustly with shop theft perpetrators.

“Our proactive work to combat this issue, as well as antisocial behaviour, is ongoing. This will include targeted operations in hot-spot areas, including the Victoria Retail Park in Netherfield, increased patrols and working closely with businesses and Gedling Borough Council to reduce retail crime.”

The bakery, which provides baked goods to families in the region, initially announced a new deal with Just Eat back in September. It started by offering direct-to-door deliveries from 11 Birds Bakery stores.

Now, due to the popularity of the service over the last five weeks, customers will be able to place Just Eat orders via the website or app the Teal Park store near Netherfield.

Tim Bird has been working on the new Just Eat partnership.

Smart Kiosks to offer more ticket facilities at Gedling borough rail stations

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is to install three ‘Smart Kiosks’ at stations across Gedling borough, which it says will make it simpler and easier for its customers to buy the cheapest fares.

The new machines, will allow customers to buy advance and walk-up tickets as a printed barcode instead of the old-fashioned orange paper tickets.

The self-serve machines issue traditional walk-up fares to customers whilst offering a full range of national Railcard and local discounts.

The new kiosks will also allow the sale of Advance Purchase fares for those customers who are not travelling immediately.

The machines are built to utilise Smart Ticketing functionality too – allowing customers to purchase a ticket and collect them from the machine.

The rail firm said customers can also easily keep up-to-date by using the kiosk’s full timetable enquiry software which provides information on their next train and any difference in cost between their chosen train and any in the next 90 minutes.

Later this year, the Smart Kiosks will also be upgraded to allow purchased tickets to be applied directly to a Smartcard and some Season Ticket products.

Simon Pready, commerical director at East Midlands Railway, said: “We want to offer customers as much flexibility as possible when purchasing tickets and that’s why the introduction of these new Smart Kiosks is great news.

“As well as other features, they offer customers a full range of eTickets and the same fare offers that they would otherwise access online. We hope our regional customers enjoy the benefits of using them when they are introduced across our regional network in the next few months.”
