Newstead bride braves the shave for Cancer Research

When you are thinking of ways to celebrate your first wedding anniversary then raising money for charity isn’t probably the first thing that springs to mind. However for Erika Astill (24) of Newstead that is exactly what she has set out to do.

Returning to the Pit @ Newstead, where she held her wedding reception last year, she shall be recreating a little piece of her and husband  Callum’s special day but with a twist. She will be shaving her head to raise vital funds for Cancer Research.

Erika told us that this experience has been on her bucket list for many years but the inspiration came to do this for Cancer Research after first losing her Grandfather to cancer caused by asbestos six years ago and then more recently when a close work colleague was diagnosed with blood cancer in her early forties.

When cancer affects someone close to you it really brings it home as to how devastating this disease is not only to that person but to those who are close to them.

Erika Astill

The event will be taking place at The Pit at Newstead Saturday September 9 and starts at 2pm.

On the day there will a cake sale with cakes donated by Emma Pope who made their wedding cake, a raffle with a chance to win a spectacular prize of a tandem paraglide from Ginger Nomad and a name the bear competition.

There will also be live music from Chris Fox at 3pm and food will be available. Everyone is welcome and if you are feeling brave then for a donation you can even have a go at shaving Erika’s head.

We asked Erika what her husband thought of all this. She told us “He doesn’t mind at all, he’s a good sort. To be honest he probably wouldn’t even notice if I walked around with a pair of knickers on my head!”

After already beating her target of raising £200 Erika has now increased it to £500. If you would like to support her to meet her target but can’t make the event then her donations page can be found on Erika’s Cancer Research Giving Page on Erika’s Giving Page (cancerresearchuk.org) .

Family furniture business opens its doors in Gedling Village.

Times Furniture Co has been a successful business for over twenty years and was based in Bulwell until 2022.

The Bulwell shop was closed due to David Perrin, the main owner choosing to downsize and run a smaller shop.

David however had no intention of retiring fully and wanted to keep the great Times Furniture name running as it had for over twenty years.

Dave’s son, Matt Perrin, is co owner of the business and as both Matt and David are Gedling residents they wanted to bring the family business closer to home and Times Furniture Co. in Gedling Village was born.

Matt also has two young children who go to the local schools in Gedling and he wanted to be closer to his kids and spend more time in the area.

The shop will be selling a range of furniture including, but not limited to, recliner chairs, nests of tables and footstools in a range of materials.

They also have brochures for other furniture items that are not on the shop floor due to space.

A spokesperson for the new furniture outlet said to Gedling Eye:

“Matt and David are both very happy to bring the business to their local area and hope they get lots of support from everyone in Gedling.

“They are very approachable and will go above and beyond to help any of their customers out.”

The new shop can be found at 94a Main Road, Gedling.

Match Report: Gedling Miners Welfare FC 4 – 3 Newark Town

UCL Division 1

2/9/23

Gedling claim massive victory thanks to a crazy five first half minutes.

The Miners came into this game after getting a point at Harrowby last Tuesday and faced a Newark team that had only lost once in their opening 6 games.

The opening exchanges were very tightly contested with the best effort in the opening 10 falling to the hosts, Muta Eisa found some space in the Newark half but his shot from 25 yards lacked power and the visitors keeper easily claimed.

Gedling began to control the game and didn’t let last years play-off semi finalists settle and on 20 minutes the miners should have gone in front, Eisa and Courtney Hastings pressured the visitors backline and Hastings found Kieran Harrison who hit an effort from 20 yards which was saved by the visitors keeper and then cleared.

But on 30 minutes the hosts hit the front, again the visitors were sloppy at the back and a poor header found Harrison who hit a left footed volley from 22 yards that found the bottom right hand corner for his 3rd of the season.

Just 40 seconds later Harrison had his 4th of the season, straight from the kick off the hosts won back the ball and some lovely one touch passing from Hastings and Jordan Knight saw the Miners get through the Newark midfield. Eisa played a lovely flick for the Gedling midfielder to race 1v1 and Harrison delightfully chipped the onrushing keeper to give Gedling a 2-0 lead.

On 34 minutes the hosts scored again, Harrison again tested the keeper who parried away but Eisa kept the ball on and picked out Hastings who found the bottom left corner from 8 yards for his 3rd of the season.

Newark were stunned and were looking to put things right and in the first minute of stoppage time they got one back, a corner found the unmarked Luke Andersen who headed back across and the visitors captain and all time top scorer Lewis Chambers bundled the ball past a helpless Josh Mitchell from two yards to make the score 3-1

But with the last action of a crazy first half saw the miners score a fourth. Eisa who had two assists to his name in the game got his first goal for the club as he hit a brilliant strike from 25 yards that found the bottom left corner to give the hosts a healthy 4-1 half time lead.

Gedling came out for the second half looking for more goals and on 55 minutes they almost extended their lead, Harrison whipped in a corner that Hastings met with a header that looked destined for the top corner but the Newark keeper made a brilliant save to keep the visitors in it.

Newark then began to control proceedings and on 72 minutes they reduced the deficit, ex Gedling player Jamie Lloyd ran unmarked and the ball fell perfectly for him and he lobbed the onrushing Mitchell from 18 yards to make the score 4-2

Just 3 minutes later Newark scored again, Elliot King and Jackson Buckthorp both won flick ons and Lucas Cotterill took the ball on his chest and on the turn smashed it into the net from 8 yards to make the score 4-3

Gedling were up against it but continued to dig in and on 84 minutes they could have put the game to bed, player manager Ruben Wiggins-Thomas went through on goal and managed to get his shot off which again was well saved.

The last action of the game almost saw the visitors complete the comeback, a deep cross picked out Cotterill who headed past Mitchell but Jack Koczalski did brilliantly to clear the ball off the line and Gedling claimed a massive 3 points.

Gedling MOM – Muta Eisa

Gedling Team – Josh Mitchell, Charlie Roberts (Jack Vipond 75’), Buba Ceesay (Ruben Wiggins-Thomas 82’), Daniel Momah, Ross McCaughey (C), Adrian Hawes, Jack Koczalski, Kieran Harrison, Muta Eisa, Courtney Hastings (Kian Clarkson 82’), Jordan Knight

Match Report: Paviors RFC 24 – 21 Mellish RFC

Regional 2 Midlands North – September 2

This weekend Pavs began their campaign in Regional 2 Midlands North against Mellish RFC at The Stump. The two sides had last met fourteen years ago in the league, so there was a huge amount of local interest as well as a Vice Presidents’ day to swell the attendant crowd at Burntstump.

From the kick off it was Pavs who dominated matters and kept Mellish pinned back in their own half. On fifteen minutes Pavs took the lead following a driving maul and touch down by prop Dan Hyams. With Harry Kerr adding the extras Pavs took a 7-0 lead.

More was to follow when newly installed skipper Josh Alton-Smith did exactly the same thing and in so doing pushed Pavs into a 12-0.

Mellish for their part then fought back bravely and were rewarded with a score in the corner that was converted to bring the score to 12-7 in favour of the home side at the break.

After the break Mellish grew into the game and with injuries to Will and Owen Taylor Pavs seemed to lose a little direction. After several forays Pavs finally extended their lead via a well worked backs move with Dan Flint touching down and Kerr adding the extras and extend Pavs lead to 19-7.

Moving into the last fifteen minutes Pavs completed their scoring with a second driving maul try for Alton-Smith to bring the score to 24-7 to Pavs.

As the clock ticked down and with Pavs ringing the changes, Mellish doggedly fought back and scored to converted tries in quick time to bring the score to 24-21 to Pavs at the final whistle.

After the match Paviors Club President Neil Kendrick said:

“A great start to the season with both our senior men’s teams overcoming stiff opposition from our local rivals Mellish.

“In addition to our wins against Mellish, our Academy had a comfortable 45-5 win over Burton Academy”

So a bonus point win for Pavs and a fair start to the season. It is clear that the side is still finding its feet with some occasionally stylish play, but also not enough consistency of execution to make life comfortable for the supporters, the squad and the coaches. There is assuredly more to come from the group who look to move forward on the artificial surface at Walsall RFC next weekend.

Squad – Dan Hyams, Owen Taylor, Jake Baldry, Ben Allen, Theo Collier, Josh Flanagan, Josh Alton-Smith (C), Phil Eggleshaw, Dan Flint, Ben Taylor, Will Taylor, Harry Kerr, Danny Green, Alex Rimmington.

Rep-Richard Hatton (60 minutes),

Will Burrows (50 minutes), Aaron Langan (34 minutes)

Forward of The Match – Josh Alton-Smith

Back of The Match – Matt Molyneux

Paviors Rugby Club play at Burntstump Hill, Arnold, NG5 8PQ and the club runs over twenty teams.

New players are always welcome – girls, boys, men & women, there is a team for all.

Match Report: Nuneaton Borough 1 – 2 Carlton Town FC

FA Cup First Round Qualifying – 2 September 2023

Goals from Khyle Sargent and David Adegbola saw Carlton Town cause an upset as they dumped step 3 Nuneaton Borough out of the FA Cup.

The win, Carlton’s first ever FA Cup win away from home against higher-ranked opposition, came courtesy of a dominant first half display and a fantastic rearguard effort in the second period as the team dug deep to protect their lead.  They had a bit of fortune when Leroy Lita missed a penalty that would have levelled the tie but there could be no doubt that the Millers fully deserved their win.  On the day they were the better side.

Mark Harvey and Tommy Brookbanks named an unchanged side from the team which had won 3-0 at Grimsby Borough last time out.  That meant a return to Nuneaton for ex-Boro star Greg Tempest.  Nuneaton featured ex-professionals Lita, Jamie Ward and Isaiah Osbourne in their starting eleven.

The Millers had already beaten Quorn and Maltby Main to reach this stage while Nuneaton were entering the competition.  Whilst Carlton knew Southern League Premier Central side Boro would provide formidable opposition, they also knew that Nuneaton were coming into the game on the back of four defeats in their opening six league games and so an early Carlton goal could make things interesting.

That is exactly how it panned out when Sargent opened the scoring in just the fourth minute.  A Lewis Durow long throw was cleared straight back to Durow, and when he whipped over a delightful cross Sargent headed expertly into the corner of the net.

Boro’s first chance came on 12 minutes when Felix Annan made a fine save from a Lita header.  But on a fine pitch in a superb stadium, Carlton were more than holding their own and were moving the ball around nicely.

Adegbola was causing problems on the right for Nuneaton but there didn’t seem to be any danger for the home side when he chased a hopeful ball out of defence on 34 minutes.  However home keeper Liam Castle was caught in possession just outside the area by Adegbola who kept his composure to side step the keeper and slot the ball into the open goal sparking pandemonium amongst the travelling support behind the goal.

Nuneaton spread the ball wide looking for a way back into the game but Durow and Shea Thompson-Harris were equal to everything that Boro could throw at them and Dean Freeman and Dan Brown were rock solid at the centre of defence.

The home side did however pull a goal back in the sixth of seven minutes of first half added time in somewhat cruel circumstances for the visitors.  Ward’s cross from the left was deflected past Annan by the unfortunate Dean Freeman.

Boro came out for the second half fired up and they had a golden chance to equalise on 50 minutes when Tempest was harshly judged to have fouled Ward.  Lita stepped up but his spot kick flew into the terracing via a glancing blow off the top of the crossbar.  Carlton have suffered with missed penalties of their own this season so it was of some comfort to see the opposition do the same for once.

As the half progressed the game settled into a pattern of Carlton defending deep and Nuneaton trying to break them down.  Connor Furlong went close with an effort from the edge of the box while Annan made another good save from a Lita header after a good run and cross by Victor Nirennold.

It was clear that the Millers were starting to tire but the workrate was outstanding, with Sargent and Tempest breaking up Boro attacks and looking to keep possession for as long as possible, and Alex Howes and Niall Hylton (later replaced by Niall Davie) all offering invaluable support.

Lamin Manneh had had to go off injured just after Nuneaton’s goal and Romello Nangle was effectively up front on his own trying to offer the Millers rearguard some respite from the Nuneaton pressure.

Kacy Milan Butterfield was next to have a long range shot, but his effort flew just over before Carlton brought on Zac Hill to add further energy to the midfield efforts.

With 12 minutes remaining Kane Richards burst clear down the right hand side and hit a shot on the turn which looked a certain goal until a wonderful one-handed save from Annan diving to his right and showing just why he has Ghana international caps to his name.

The Millers, roared on by their passionate and vocal following, continued to absorb pressure and another cross from Nirennold led to some pinball in the area and a goal line clearance from Freeman or Brown.

Thompson-Harris broke up another Boro attack with a superb tackle on the half way line before Carlton had a chance to seal the win when Howes won the ball in midfield and sent Nangle through on goal.  The striker had Hill in support but elected to shoot and his shot was well saved by Castle.

With the game deep into added time Nuneaton thought they had equalised from another scramble in the area but Brown cleared off the line and Annan later caught a final cross into the box to end their hopes.

The final whistle brought delirious scenes amongst the whole squad who went to the far end of the ground to celebrate with the 30 or so travelling fans.  This is the furthest that Carlton have progressed in the FA Cup for 10 years and the team are one win away from equalling Carlton’s best-ever FA Cup run.  On this performance, no one should bet against them doing exactly that.  It was a privilege to have watched this game.

Carlton Town: F Annan, S Thompson-Harris, L Durow, D Brown, D Freeman, G Tempest, D Adegbola (Z Hill 74), K Sargent, L Manneh (R Nangle 45), A Howes, N Hylton (N Davie 64). Unused subs: N Liburd-Hines, M Jawarra, L Gorman, L Bateman

MP: No Gedling schools to close over concrete safety fears

A Gedling MP has revealed that no schools within his constituency are facing mandatory closures due to unsafe concrete, following a nationwide directive highlighting potential risks.

Some 104 schools and colleges are now scrambling to put emergency measures in place in time for the return after the summer holidays after being told by the Department for Education (DfE) to partially or fully close buildings.

It is because of fears concrete used in the construction of some school buildings could collapse.

However, the Government has not revealed the 104 education facilities that are affected.

RAAC is a lightweight building material used from the 1950s up to the mid-1990s, but now assessed to be at risk of collapse.

Gedling MP Tom Randall last night posted an update on his Facebook page in an effort to reassure parents in the area.

He wrote: “Parents across Gedling may be concerned at the reported problems with Aerated Concrete in school buildings but I am pleased to confirm that no school in Gedling will be closing as a result of this issue.

“It is worth noting that local councils have been working with schools and the DfE to assess and correct any issues for several months and no school in Nottinghamshire will be closing because of RAAC.”

The DfE has been considering RAAC as a potential issue since late 2018 but the timing of the decision to issue guidance just days before the start of term has angered unions.

National Education Union general secretary Daniel Kebede said: “It is absolutely disgraceful, and a sign of gross Government incompetence, that a few days before the start of term, 104 schools are finding out that some or all of their buildings are unsafe and cannot be used.

“To add insult to injury the Government states in its guidance that it will not be covering the costs of emergency temporary accommodation or additional transport.”
