When you are thinking of ways to celebrate your first wedding anniversary then raising money for charity isn’t probably the first thing that springs to mind. However for Erika Astill (24) of Newstead that is exactly what she has set out to do.
Returning to the Pit @ Newstead, where she held her wedding reception last year, she shall be recreating a little piece of her and husband Callum’s special day but with a twist. She will be shaving her head to raise vital funds for Cancer Research.
Erika told us that this experience has been on her bucket list for many years but the inspiration came to do this for Cancer Research after first losing her Grandfather to cancer caused by asbestos six years ago and then more recently when a close work colleague was diagnosed with blood cancer in her early forties.
When cancer affects someone close to you it really brings it home as to how devastating this disease is not only to that person but to those who are close to them.

The event will be taking place at The Pit at Newstead Saturday September 9 and starts at 2pm.
On the day there will a cake sale with cakes donated by Emma Pope who made their wedding cake, a raffle with a chance to win a spectacular prize of a tandem paraglide from Ginger Nomad and a name the bear competition.
There will also be live music from Chris Fox at 3pm and food will be available. Everyone is welcome and if you are feeling brave then for a donation you can even have a go at shaving Erika’s head.
We asked Erika what her husband thought of all this. She told us “He doesn’t mind at all, he’s a good sort. To be honest he probably wouldn’t even notice if I walked around with a pair of knickers on my head!”
After already beating her target of raising £200 Erika has now increased it to £500. If you would like to support her to meet her target but can’t make the event then her donations page can be found on Erika’s Cancer Research Giving Page on Erika’s Giving Page (cancerresearchuk.org) .
