The money from Wren, along with an additional £70,000 from Gedling Borough Council, will be used to create two play areas – one play area will be aimed at toddlers and an adjacent one will cater for older children.

With funding now in place, it is hoped that both new play areas could be open to the public by next Spring.

Terry Lock, Chairman of the Friends of Gedling Country Park believes the new play area will have a positive impact on the whole community.

He said: “We’ve had an overwhelming response from the public in support of our application, with over 1,200 online followers specifically for this project, and letters of support from some high profile people within the local community. It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded this money and we’re really looking forward to the children’s play area taking shape over the next few months.”

Councillor Peter Barnes, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said that the new park was just one of many exciting developments planned for Gedling Country Park.

He said: “This is great news for the group who’ve worked tirelessly to get this funding and we’re delighted for them. The council will also be contributing £70,000 to the older children’s play area and we’ve expanded the car park, we’re installing toilets and there will be a portable café outlet in the near future. All of these exciting developments will make Gedling Country Park an even better destination for people to visit.”

Is your two-year-old eligible for free childcare place in Gedling borough?

0

A council is encouraging parents and carers with two-year-olds in Gedling borough to check if they qualify for free childcare places on offer.

Nottinghamshire County Council is working with families to let them know about the entitlement which provides children who are eligible for a free childcare place for up to 15 hours a week.

Around 73 per cent of children who have already qualified during the current term are receiving their provision with many registered for the latest stage of funding for the spring term and there is still time for people to find out more.

The County Council’s Early Childhood team are promoting the national initiative through a range of channels which will include writing to all families and individuals whose children are eligible for the funding and giving them a chance to find out more about different early years’ settings.

It is estimated that around 3,100 children in the county qualify for the free childcare provision for two-year-olds this academic year.

Councillor Liz Plant, Vice-Chairman of the Children and Young People’s Committee, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We are reminding families and individuals to check the eligibility criteria to see if they qualify for this free childcare provision during this academic year.

“People might not realise that they do not have to take up the full 15 hours of childcare, and even a few hours a week in a nursery or early years setting can help give children a great start in their readiness for school in terms of enhancing their early social and education experiences in life.”

To find out if you are eligible, you can look online on the Nottinghamshire County Council website: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/childcare or call 0300 500 8080

New Oyster-style travel card to be introduced on Monday for Nottingham residents

0

Traveling around Nottingham using public transport will soon be even easier for Gedling borough residents with the introduction of a new Oyster-style travel card on Monday (14).

The pay-as-you-go Robin Hood smartcard will create a hassle-free way of getting around Nottingham on bus or tram – even when using different transport operators.

The Robin Hood card will be valid for travel on Nottingham Express Transit (tram), Nottingham City Transport (NCT) – including Pathfinder and South Notts buses – Kinchbus, Trent Barton and the City Council’s Linkbus network (including park and ride) within Nottingham.

Robhoodtravel
The Robin Hood smartcard will work like London’s Oyster card with customers adding money to the card to pay for bus and tram fares.

A single trip on one day will be £1.70 with any operator. Unlimited day trips can be made for £3.15 from any one given operator or £4 for more than one operator. The minimum top-up on the card will be £10.

The card itself is free and the fares are set by the transport providers. Passengers don’t have to decide in advance which ticket to buy – the card works this out and gives the best fare on the day for the trips they’ve made.

To use the card, a customer will present it to a smartcard reader once for each trip made. On bus services, this will be the reader on entering the bus. To use the tram, the Robin Hood card should be touched on to the validator on the platform.

The Robin Hood card is the first scheme of its kind outside London, where the Oyster card has revolutionised the way people get around the capital.

Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Growth, Jobs and Transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “This is a really exciting development and further underlines our commitment to providing a world-class public transport system for Nottingham. An integrated travel card of this type has never been done before outside London and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to work with our commercial partners to make it happen.

The Robin Hood card will be valid over the Greater Nottingham area, from Arnold to Ruddington, and from Netherfield to Beeston, so will be great for occasional public transport commuters and for shoppers and visitors to the city.”

For more information visit the website www.robinhoodnetwork.co.uk from Monday.

HOAX: The fake post doing the rounds on Facebook
HOAX: The fake post doing the rounds on Facebook

FACEBOOK users in Gedling borough have been sharing a hoax post on the social network which suggests founder Mark Zuckerberg is to give away millions of his cash to users.

The fake post currently doing the rounds claims that Facebook founder Zuckberberg is to dish out £2.7million to 1,000 users.

It claims that all the user has to do is copy and paste a message on their timeline, and share it with five to ten friends.

Dozens of these messages have been spotted on the Facebook walls of users across the borough hoping to receive a share of the cash up for grabs.

Like many of these messages that circulate on social media, it’s all a con to attempt to cause chaos on the site.

A spokesperson for Action Fraud, which is the UK’s national fraud and internet crime reporting centre, told Gedling Eye: “Mark Zuckerberg is not giving millions of dollars to Facebook users who just copy and paste this message.”
