81 refugees fleeing war-torn Syria will arrive in Nottingham today and will be rehomed in the county over the coming weeks.
The eighteen families are being allowed to stay in the UK for up to five years and will be funded by the Home Office. After this time they can apply to live in the UK if they wish.
Gedling Borough Council Chief Executive John Robinson, pictured, left, who has been leading on the preparations, said: “Today (Monday, December 14) in welcoming 81 Syrian refugees to Nottinghamshire, we are playing our part in the Government’s national resettlement scheme.
“The 18 families that are joining us, many of which have young children, have endured significant hardship and suffering. Nottinghamshire has a proud history of supporting the most vulnerable in our society and the many offers of support that have already been received is an indication of the generosity and warm welcome that will be offered”
