Tony Cave Column: Netherfield Station train campaign right on track

Train enthusiast Tony Cave has adopted our train stations at Carlton and Netherfield. In his regular Gedling Eye column, he shares the latest news from  the railways

Netherfield

The 10.45 Skegness to Nottingham train on Summer Sundays will call at Bottesford, Aslockton, Radcliffe and Netherfield. These stops were omitted in the recently printed timetable. A train will also be stopping at Netherfield at 12.18pm. An amended timetable will be posted at the station.

Newark Festival

The festival, which takes place on Friday 17, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 of June, is expected to draw big crowds, so to relieve traffic congestion, East Midlands Trains are running an additional late evening train service on Saturday, June 18. It will call at all stations between Newark and Nottingham, departing Newark at 22.44 and will call at Carlton at 23.13. Late trains already run on Friday and Sunday nights. Suspect in attempted Sherwood TSB bank robbery caught on CCTV camera

CCTV images of a man wanted in connection with an attempted robbery of a bank in Sherwood have been released.

At around 9.10am, on April 29, 2016, a man walked into TSB on Mansfield Road and made a demand for money.

He left empty-handed and nobody was harmed.

Six roads to close in Gedling borough for Queen’s birthday celebrations

Celebrations will be in full swing across Gedling borough over the weekend to mark the Queen’s official 90th birthday.

Six roads in the borough will be closed during this weekend and next to allow street parties to take place to celebrate Her Majesty’s official birthday.

The following roads will be closed for street parties:

Henry Street, Redhill

The road will be closed on June 12 between 11am-4pm

Hillside Avenue, Mapperley

The road will be closed on June 12 between 12-4pm. This application is still to be confirmed.

Redhill Lodge Drive, Redhill

The road will be closed on June 12 between 12-4pm

Turpin Avenue, Gedling

The road will be closed on June 18 between 2-4pm

Barden Road, Woodthorpe

The road will be closed on June 12 between 11am-5pm

Woodsend Close, Burton Joyce

The road will be closed on June 11 between 12pm – 8pm

Guide dog charity campaigner from Arnold recognised with volunteers award

A blind woman from Arnold has been recognised with a regional award for her campaign work on behalf of a local charity.

Mel Griffiths won the Inclusive and Embracing category at the Guide Dogs’ Local Volunteer Awards which were handed out this week.

Mel was recognised for her passionate campaigning on issues affecting guide dog owners across the country.

New public weighbridge opens in Calverton

A new weighbridge has been opened to the public in Calverton.

The new facility, which is based at RC Tuxford Exports, in Hollinwood Lane, can now be used by the public and traders to weigh vehicles for a small fee.

It brings the total in Nottinghamshire to 14.

Weighbridges play a vital role in today’s industry, providing valuable weight data for haulage vehicles and bulk loading activities for companies.

Colwick primary school head teacher chosen for event in Parliament

A head teacher from a Colwick primary school has been selected to attend the tenth annual Teachers’ Institute in the Houses of Parliament.

Chris Belton, who is head teacher at St John the Baptist Primary School, was selected from more than a hundred applicants to attend this event in Parliament from July 4-8.

Mr Belton will get to meet the Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Education, participate in question and answer sessions with the Speaker and the Lord Speaker, and hear from parliamentarians of all parties in both the Commons and Lords.

Arnold club boxer who feared he would never fight again crowned champion

A boxer who feared he would never fight again after being involved in a serious car crash just seven months ago has been crowned East Midlands light welterweight champion.

Arnold School of Boxing fighter Callum Schofield faced Derby opponent Rhys Ledkinski in the title fight that was held in Grantham.

The 18-year-old from Bulwell won all three rounds against opponent Ledkinski, who boxes for Prospects ABC.

Club founder Clinton McPhilbin told Gedling Eye: “This caps off a remarkable turnaround for Schofield, who was involved in a serious car crash that nearly stopped him boxing all together.

“But he worked hard in the gym and is now crowned champion

He added: “He won all three rounds with some very strong and accurate shots”

Schofield will now look to defend his belt at the end of June.

Here’s the latest monthly crime update from police teams across the borough…

ARNOLD, CALVERTON, RAVENSHEAD and VILLAGES

On June 4, police received calls about two males acting suspiciously on people’s driveways and entering gardens in the Ravenshead area. There have been a small number of burglaries in the area over the past few weeks. Police attended and detained one of the males – with help from a police dog. Officers also found equipment which could have possibly been used to gain entry into houses.

Police received numerous calls on May 29 about off-road bikes in the Newstead area. Some damage was caused to a police car. One male was stopped and his bike was seized using police powers. Appropriate action will now be taken against the rider.

Police are appealing for information about the individuals who own these bikes. Are you aware of addresses where such bikes are being stored? Do you know the registration numbers of any bikes being used in this anti-social manner? You can call police on 101

BESTWOOD

Once again, police are seeing a high number of motorbikes being stolen in the area. They are mainly 125cc bikes. Police are keen to remind people that leaving your bikes on show or insecure makes it easier for the opportunist and professionals to steal it.
Please ensure your bike is not visible where possible and in all cases use a toughened lock to secure it to a strong permanent structure. Consider having an alarm fitted if you don’t already have one or a tracking device.

During the first two weeks of May, local police officers reported that past a number of work vans, predominately Ford Transit vans, have been broken into overnight. A number of vans have been targeted in the Bestwood Ward area. No damage was caused to the vehicles but offenders are removing tools. Police are reminding people to remove tools and other valuables from work vans overnight.

Blind charity launches appeal for volunteers in borough

A charity that offers a service to help people in the borough with sight loss get out and about is appealing for volunteers.

Guide Dogs’ My Guide service relies on members of the public to give up a couple of hours a week to guide someone in their local community.

The service helps blind and partially-sighted people regain their independent with volunteers helping them to the shops, the gym or to access services in the local community.

Fairport Convention at Lowdham Village Hall: Review

“The word legendary is used far too often, but in this case it is totally appropriate,” said Mike Hoare as he introduced folk rock stalwarts, Fairport Convention.

It is more than apt then that Myth and Heroes is the title of their most recent CD and formed the backbone of this Warthog Promotions gig in Lowdham Village Hall, on June 1.

The combo formed in 1967 and has seen a variety of line ups before the current quintet which has endured for over 20 years.

Lowdham’s audience saw a stripped back, largely acoustic format – Simon Nicol (guitar/vocals), Dave Pegg (bass/vocals), Chris Leslie (multiple instruments/vocals), Ric Sanders (fiddle/vocals) and Gerry Conway (Cajon/percussion). Nicol compared the coming and goings of early Fairport members with the crew of the ship as charted in Ralph McTell’s, Clear Water.
