Calverton mummers keep ancient tradition alive during lockdown with online performance of St George’s Play that will help raise cash for food bank in Arnold

A group of mummers from Calverton have now turned to technology in a bid to keep their ancient play performance tradition alive during the UK lockdown – and also raise cash for Arnold Food Bank.

Each year, the Calverton Plough Boys act out the traditional St George’s Play in pubs around the borough on the nearest Saturday to the saint’s day – a tradition dating back hundreds of years.

But with pubs being forced to shut their doors due to the lockdown, the group have now turned to YouTube so they can entertain the masses virtually.

The group have managed to perform the play remotely, edit it together and have now made it available online as ‘the Isolation Edition’ of St George’s Play.

In return for their efforts, the Plough Boys are asking for donations to be made to the Arnold Food Bank in return.

Group member Simon Carter said: “We perform a traditional St George’s mummers play on the nearest Saturday to St George’s Day every year to raise funds for charity but this year the pubs are shut.

“So, instead, we’ve made a silly film to replace this year’s live performance, spliced together from our various places of isolation. We’ll be inflicting it on the World Wide Web on Saturday (April 25). We already feel very sorry for you!”

He added: “Please watch and share the film to literally millions of your friends on social media. Be sure to also share our fundraising link, and donate a few quid to Arnold Food Bank, our chosen charity this year.”

B&Q store at Netherfield retail park reopens

DIY chain B&Q has now reopened its store at Victoria Retail Park in Netherfield as lockdown measures remain in place.

The retail giant said it has introduced “social distancing controls”, such as capping the number of customers in-store.

B&Q had closed its shops since the end of March after the government introduced lockdown measures to try to contain the spread of Covid-19.

However, hardware shops were included on the government’s list of essential retailers that were allowed to trade under the restrictions and B&Q customers could continue to shop online.

B&Q’s said its reopened stores are currently not accepting cash, with only card or contactless payments permitted.

Only products that shoppers can take away with them from the store on the day are available, but you can still snap up something like a standalone sink if that it what you are after.

The retailer has paused its bathroom and kitchen design services, while its paint mixing, timber cutting and key cutting services are also closed for the time being.

For B&Q shoppers still ordering online, the chain said: ‘We continue to offer our Click+Collect service at diy.com.

Colwick packaging firm creates innovative protective visor which could be used by frontline NHS staff tackling coronavirus

A leading provider of supermarket packaging in Colwick has created an innovative protective visor in just 24 hours, which it says could be rolled out to medical staff on the Coronavirus frontline.

Colwick-based food packaging manufacturers The Wilkins Group have been working around the clock after multiple enquiries and a keen sense to help saw staff create face protectors, which can be rolled out on a mass scale.

Justin Wilkins, sales and marketing director at the firm, which recently won the title of Midlands Family Business of the Year, said: “Our team were approached by the Trentside Medical Group in Netherfield to see if we could help them with masks or visors.”

After the initial enquiries, the team set to work to initially source the polyester, cardboard and antimicrobial varnish material required to turn the protectors around, and within a few hours, the team had produced a design, which medical staff at the local surgery were impressed with.

The prototype is now being discussed with medical staff at the Trentside Medical Group, and if successful, the packaging giant has the capacity to produce hundreds of thousands of visors each week.

Justin added: “We are so proud of all our staff here at The Wilkins Group, who have pulled together through what is a very difficult time for everyone. We are all working tirelessly to keep our customers supplied with food packaging products, and also to do it safely.

“These new face protectors will be issued to all of our own staff, as well as helping not only our customers protect their employees but the fantastic NHS staff.”

The visors are printed with a special antimicrobial coating and feature an adjustable universal one size fits all strap that locates around the back of the head. The Window is optically clear for maximum visibility and allows glasses to be worn underneath.

The Colwick-based company is now striving to make contact with NHS procurement managers and those higher up in Government, to see if the team can help on a previously unimaginable scale.

New ‘Shopping Slot’ website helps borough shoppers find supermarket deliveries during lockdown

A new website has been launched to helping struggling shoppers in the borough find home delivery slots from local supermarkets during the coronavirus outbreak.

The ‘Shopping Slot‘ website is completely free to use, all you have to do is enter your postcode to carry out a search.

The website will then scan nearby supermarkets to find out which delivery slots are available.

Once it’s finished checking, it will then bring up your results so you can see which local retailer you can get groceries delivered from.

The supermarket asks you to enter your email address to see the results, but you don’t have to do this.

If no delivery slot is available, users can even request to be emailed as soon as one becomes available. WhatsApp notifications are to be made available soon.

Our search got these results in Gedling borough

Shopping Slot currently shows results from Asda, Iceland, Tesco and Waitrose.

The website doesn’t cover Morrisons, Ocado or Sainsbury’s, but the owners say they are working on adding these supermarkets soon.

When Gedling Eye checked on Shopping Slot this morning with a Gedling postcode we found 24 slots on Sunday (April 24) at Asda in Arnold but nothing at nearby Iceland stores or Waitrose.

Be aware that you can’t book delivery times through Shopping Slot, and you’ll need to go to the supermarket’s website to do this.

If you click on the delivery slot found by Shopping Slot, it will take you directly to the supermarket’s delivery page where you’ll be able to book the available time.

Shopping Slot also cannot hold, reserve or prioritise slots.

The website is free to use, and shoppers can search for delivery times as many times as they like.

The owners said they plan to add smaller businesses to teh site search too.

No app for Shopping Slot is currently available.

Postmen in Carlton will deliver in fancy dress this weekend to cheer people up during lockdown

Postmen in Carlton will be bringing smiles to customers cooped up in quarantine when they do their rounds in fancy dress this weekend to help raise cash for an NHS ward who treated a colleague with coronavirus.

The fundraiser is the brainchild of postman Simon Stevenson, who has already been spotted making his way across the borough delivering mail as Superman. He has now persuaded others at the Carlton Post Office depot to also ditch their uniforms and carry out their rounds in costume this Saturday.

As well as raising a few smiles, the post office workers taking part in the fancy dress rounds also hope to raise funds for the ward that treated their colleague in the QMC.

Simon Stevenson has been carrying out his rounds as Superman over the past three weeks.

Mr Stevenson, who lives in Gedling, said “We are doing the rounds in fancy dress on Saturday to put smiles on people’s faces during these tough times and try and make people a bit happier.

“We also want to raise awareness and funds for the NHS, who did such a great job looking after one of our colleagues who got coronavirus recently. He’s been in the QMC for a month, but has now pulled through. We now want to give something back for the care and support he received.

A JustGiving page has now been set up to collect donations for this worthy cause. You can find the page here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/martyn-gough
