PCC Paddy Tipping celebrates pedal power with visit to see new electric police bikes in Gedling borough

0

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping experienced the marvel of eco-friendly transport with a visit to see the force’s new electric police bikes for himself.

As part of a determined effort to reduce Nottinghamshire Police’s carbon footprint and embrace greener technology, the PCC has supported the investment in four new electricity-powered bikes (e-bikes) to help the force fight crime and tackle antisocial behaviour.

A trial is currently underway in Gedling in partnership with Gedling Borough Council to measure the impact of the new bikes on policing but already the new additions have become a hit with residents.

Mr Tipping inspected two of the Phantom E Bikes based at Carlton Police Station earlier today and was told of the huge value they brought to officers who are able to cover more ground and apprehend fleeing suspects at a greater pace.

PICTURED: PCC Paddy Tipping gets to grips with the new electric police bikes

“One of the great things about new technology is that is makes the job of police officers easier and more effective,” explained Mr Tipping.

“The new e-bikes are not only quick off the ground and allow officers to follow suspects in areas inaccessible by police cars, they are also helping to protect the environment and reduce the force’s carbon footprint.

“The wheels really are in motion for a greener future and I’m sure we will hear many heroic tales of pedal power in the future.”

The bikes have police markings and blue flashing lights and enable officers to patrol alleys and narrow thoroughfares which are difficult to police by car. They also help officers cover hilly terrain and dirt tracks frequented by nuisance quad bike and scooter riders.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Mike Ebbins said: “The bikes have already been used to detain an outstanding burglar who was making away from a scene in Netherfield. Due to the bikes’ speed and silent approach, officers were able to get ahead of their colleagues in police cars and arrest the offender who was later charged with the offence.

“We’ve already had comments from people that it’s great to see officers back out on bikes. It’s a really good bit of kit – I don’t think many forces have bikes like these.

“It’s fantastic to be able to reduce our carbon footprint, so that we can protect the environment while we’re protecting the community.”

Woodthorpe man to support Syrian refugees by living on their rations for a week

A Woodthorpe man is gearing up to take part in a gruelling ration challenge in awareness of refugees.

Michael Speirs will take part in the Ration Challenge next week to raise awareness of the plight of refugees and to raise funds for the charity, Concern.

For the challenge Mr Speirs will live off the same rations as a Syrian refugee for one week.

All money raised will go towards funding emergency food, hygiene kits and lifesaving support for refugees and other vulnerable communities who have been hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic.

The 26-year-old told Gedling Eye : “I decided to do this challenge to help raise money for refugees as they have been badly affected by Covid-19. Coronavirus has hit us all hard but none more so than those in refugee camps, with many starving to death.

PICTURED: The rations Michael Speirs will live off for one week

“I loved the idea of getting involved in this challenge and hopefully doing my bit to help out. I like doing challenges to help out charities to raise as much as I can. I’ve raised money for Cancer Research and the RSPCA previously and next year ill be doing a 80-mile walk to raise money for a mental health charity.”

From Monday, Michael will drink only water and eat just 420g of rice, 170g of lentils, 85g of dried chickpeas, 400g of tinned kidney beans, 330ml of vegetable oil. 120g of tofu (instead of sardines), 1.5kg of rice, 400g of flour and a spice of his choice.

Eat Out to Help Out: Who is taking part in the scheme in Gedling borough?

If you haven’t eaten out since lockdown restrictions were eased, this new scheme might just persuade you to do so – at least, that’s what the Government is hoping.

The state-backed Eat Out to Help Out scheme launches today and will run on every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between Monday, August 3 and Monday, August 31. It will give customers a 50 per cent discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks at up to £10 a head.

The scheme is designed to give the struggling hospitality industry a shot in the arm while encouraging people to venture out to pubs, cafés and restaurants again.

Food and drink must be consumed on the premises, not taken away, and businesses can claim the cost of the discount back from HMRC.

Here’s a list of bars, cafes and restaurants in Gedling borough taking part…

A-level ‘fiasco’ slammed by Gedling councillor Michael Payne in letter to MP Tom Randall

Deputy leader of Gedling Borough Council Michael Payne has today written to local MP Tom Randall calling for urgent action to address what he is calling ‘the A-level fiasco’.

A Level exams were unable to be sat this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, which meant that students were given a calculated grade based on teachers submitting predicted marks alongside a rank order of students.

But some results were downgraded after Ofqual used an algorithm based on schools’ previous results and individual pupil attainment which meant many students received grades lower than anticipated and missed out on their universities of choice on Thursday (August 13).

The government has confirmed schools in England will be able to appeal against A-level and GCSE grades free of charge, yet the results have sparked protests and emotional messages from affected students.

Now Cllr Michael Payne has written to Gedling MP Tom Randall asking him to urge the Government to ‘immediately sort this fiasco out and regain the confidence of pupils, parents and teachers’.

Mr Payne wrote: “Six months ago, we asked young people to follow our rules, leave their schools and surrender their freedom. They obeyed and they’ve been rewarded with the cruellest and most brutal example of levelling down by this government.

“It is disappointing that five days on from this fiasco, which is robbing the future of young people in Gedling constituency, you have remained silent on the issue and failed to publicly press the government to get a grip on sorting this debacle out.

“The truth is your government has a choice to make that will affect a generation of A-level students who have suffered months of extraordinary disruption and stress: immediately sort this fiasco out and regain the confidence of pupils, parents and teachers or allow scores of young people to carry a scarring injustice with them for the rest of their life.

He added: “Silence is not an option – your duty is to stand up the young people whose future has been robbed by this gross act of injustice. It is inexcusable to remain silent whilst the government creates a glass ceiling for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and a glass floor for students from advantaged ones.”

“I look forward to reading your strong representations to the Prime Minister & Secretary of State for Education on this important matter.”

Gedling Eye contacted MP Tom Randall for a comment.

He told us: I’m very grateful to those students and parents who have written to me. I am also in contact with local headteachers.

“Over the last few days I have been on a number of calls with ministers and my constituents’ concerns have been fed back to Government.

” I’m very sympathetic to my constituents’ concerns and I will continue to listen carefully to them. I have further calls with ministers planned for later today.

Club legends line up to be interviewed on new Notts County podcast started by lifelong fan from Gedling

Notts County club legends are lining up to take part in a new podcast which has been launched by a lifelong fan from Gedling.

‘Pies fanatic and former club director Paul Mace hosts the weekly Magpie Circle podcast and has already notched up over 100,000 listens and views.

The weekly series of broadcasts featuring former club players and managers is a father and son combination with Paul doing the interviews and his son Harry editing and producing them.

Club legends Lee Hughes, Steve Cherry, Michael Johnson, Paul Devlin and Trevor Christie have all been guests so far with plans lined up to interview Sven Goran Eriksson as well.

Mr Mace told Gedling Eye: “Our aim is to get up close and personal with former playing and managerial legends of the club.

“It’s all about banter, anecdotes and stories – what really goes on behind the scenes which may not have been previously reported.

“They’ve been attracting huge interest among the club’s fanbase and the feedback has been very positive.

“The players all love the chance to take a trip down memory lane and we have a queue of players spanning five decades lined up to take part.”

Mr Mace revealed that Gedling borough is one of the biggest regional strongholds for Magpies supporters and has strong connections with the club.

Notts legends spanning five decades joined together to launch Paul Mace’s book One Flew Over The Magpies Nest in 2016
Logo for the new Magpie Circle podcast launched by Paul Mace and son Harry

“During my time as a director I commissioned some research into the geographical location of our supporter base.

“The Gedling, Carlton and Burton Joyce regions have the highest concentration of season ticket holders of any region in Nottinghamshire.

“Burton Joyce has particularly strong links with the club having been the home of club legend Jimmy Sirrel for four decades.”

Mace also wrote a 250,000 word  best-selling book on the club entitled One Flew Over The Magpies Nest.

“In many respects the podcasts are an audio and video version of the book.  They give the listeners and viewers the opportunity to get to know the players a little more and take a sentimental trip down memory lane or, in our case, Meadow Lane.

“Having worked in professional football for 35 years and sponsored the Notts County Former Players Association, I am fortunate to be on the ‘inside’ of the sport, but most supporters don’t get the  chance to take a sneak peak behind the curtains, so to speak.

“As opposed to largely sanitised soundbite interviews with current players, The Circle allows fans to get a real appreciation of the character and depth of the guest player and manager in a more relaxed and light-hearted environment.

“As a fourth generation Notts supporter whose family moved into Sneinton in the late 1880s when Notts were one of the inaugural members of the Football League, the club has a uniquely proud history and heritage.

“Hopefully our podcasts will play a very small part in preserving the legacy and stories of players and managers from the past 50 years who have represented the club with such distinction.”

The Magpie Circle is available free  in video and audio formats and a new episode is put on live every Thursday at 5pm. You can find the podcast via the following channels:
