The latest food hygiene ratings across Gedling borough

Hygiene inspectors have been continuing to visit Gedling borough eateries to rate their standards.

Listed below are some of the latest findings by council inspectors, published over the past month.

Thousands of premises across the country are rated by the Food Standards Agency, based on the findings of local authority environmental health inspectors, who work all-year round.

The hygiene standards found at the time of inspection are then rated on a scale from zero to five.

Five is top of the scale, meaning the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with regulations.

Zero is at the bottom of the scale, meaning urgent improvement is necessary.

The inspections are broken down into three categories: hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and management of food safety.

More vulnerable families than ever requesting free school uniform payments

More money than ever before is being spent on helping vulnerable Nottinghamshire children afford school uniforms, the county council says.

The authority funds school clothing allowances for vulnerable families living across Nottinghamshire.

Families who are eligible for help include those who have lost clothes in a fire, a flood, theft, have been made homeless or who are fleeing domestic violence.

But new numbers reveal that there has been an increase in claims during the 2022/23 financial year.

During this year, £673.75 was paid out, which is an overspend on the £500 budget allocated by the council.

“This was the first year that the £500 budget was overspent.

“It is proposed that the budget for school clothing and footwear allowances paid under the category of exceptional circumstances be reviewed to ensure that the budget allocated meets need from April 2024.”

The review will be discussed by councillors at the children and families committee on June 19.

The council considers all requests for help from families in “exceptional circumstances” for all school-age children.

Families can claim up to £50 per pupil, depending on the circumstances.

The current overspend can be contained within the overall Education, Learning & Skills budget of £6.6m.

County council papers said: “In line with the County Council’s financial  regulations, school clothing and footwear allowances are reviewed annually and as explained in this report it is proposed to continue to provide a fair and consistent approach for determining the amount of allowances paid
under the exceptional circumstances category.

“The existing arrangements enable the most vulnerable families, irrespective of age or the type of school their child attends, to apply for assistance with school clothing allowance. The values set are intended to support families with the cost of school uniform.”

Met Office issues thunderstorm warning following week of glorious sunshine in Gedling borough

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms following a week of glorious sunshine across Gedling borough.

The weather experts have said that heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected on Sunday and could cause disruption to parts of England and Wales.

The yellow alert is in place throughout the day and covers all of Gedling borough.

Raining

The area was hit by bad thunderstorms and heavy rain on Monday with It’s Inn The Bank pub in Netherfield being hit by lightning and the local Morrisons store being impacted by flooding.

The rain is forecast to last into the early hours of Monday morning. From Saturday it’s looking set to be a lot cloudier across the borough although temperatures will remain warm.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop across parts of England and Wales during Sunday, with longer spells of thundery rain in places.

“Whilst many areas will see at least some rain, most will see only relatively small amounts. However, some places could see 30 mm in an hour and 60mm in 6 hours, with the potential for frequent lightning, strong winds and hail. Where this occurs there is likely to be some disruption.

“While there is a high likelihood that thunderstorms will develop over England and Wales, there remains a large amount of uncertainty in exactly where these develop. This uncertainty is likely to remain even up to short lead times.”

ARNOLD: New bar and bistro set to open its doors in town centre

Work is continuing at pace to create Arnold‘s newest cafe bar and bistro.

Sully’s Bistro / Cafe Bar will occupy premises previously used by Revival Coffee Co, which formally closed its doors back in November 2022.

The external signage has been erected and the bar / beer pumps can also be seen from the outside although no opening date has been announced.

Plans approved by Gedling Borough Council on May 26 indicate that there will be seating for 39 customers on the ground floor with access to the first floor at the back of the ground floor. The ground floor will accommodate the bar with further seating alongside the bar counter.

Proposals for the first floor indicate housing of the men’s and women’s WCs as well as seating for a further 26 customers.

The property has been empty since Kate and Team Revival at Revival Coffee Co. announced on Facebook back in November that they were closing due to ‘rising costs’.

At the time they posted: ” We’ve tried really hard to fight the rising costs, bills and cost of living crisis but as a small independent we have no choice but to close our doors.”

Finishing line in sight for Carlton Town electricity bill fundraising campaign

Fundraisers helping a local football club pay a shockingly high electric bill are close to hitting their target.

Carlton Town revealed last month that after submitting a meter reading, they received a bill for a whopping £8714.03 (including VAT).

Millers supporters have come out in numbers with a massively successful fundraising campaign raising thousands in the last number of weeks.

Last week the club confirmed on their website that fundraising has passed the £6,000 mark.

Mick Garton and Barry North started the fund with £1,000 each closely followed by Gilbert Wealth £500 and Russell Scanlan £500.

This was followed by the club raising £500 on a football number card, an anonymous donation of £250 and another donation of £250 from Simon Rood.

Lymns the funeral directors have contributed £300 as well as a £500 donation from a branch of the Nottingham Forest Supporters Club.

Kelly Mitchell also set up a Go fund me page which has now raised £920 of the £1,000 target and donations can be made HERE

A quiz night at the William Gunn raised over £400 on June 5.

The club have also stated that there have been a couple of smaller but valuable donations at the ground.

The clubs website has aannounced that Carlton Town Chairman Mick Garton was asked to attend a debriefing at the Navigation Pub on Meadow Lane following the Notts County v Juventus Supporters Match at Stoke Lane at the end of the season and was surprised and delighted to receive a donation of £200 towards the horrendous energy bill.

The club believes that the donation from the Notts County supporters means that they should raise enough to bring the fundraising to a conclusion will the full bill covered if Kelly’s fund raising target reaches it’s target of £1,000 (now on £920) and the forecasted income from the planned Sports day is achieved.

New images shows how Inn For A Penny pub in Carlton could look after proposed refit and rebrand

New images have shown how an iconic Carlton pub may look after a proposed refurb.

The Inn for a Penny is set to be refurbished by owners Greene King and brought under their new Hive Pubs umbrella.

The brewery say Hive pubs are operated by franchisees who have local knowledge and experience of running a pub, bringing their individual know-how to the Hive pub to deliver the best customer experience.

In a statement released on their website, Greene King said: “The Inn for a Penny at Carlton is soon to be fully refurbished and brought under the Hive Pubs umbrella.

“Hive Pubs operate at the heart of the local community and offer an excellent drinks range, classic pub food, and a stunning garden, with sports and entertainment at the heart of the offer.

“The full refurbishment will improve the kerb appeal of the pub with all new signage, lighting and planting. Inside, we will zone the pub efficiently, so there is space for pub sports, socialising, dining and a live acts area.

“TV screens will be strategically placed, to ensure the best viewing experience without dominating.

“The pub will be fully redecorated, with new lighting, flooring and bric a brac. The garden will feature a covered pergola, with lose and fixed seating, as well as a children’s play area.”

Local lad Jamie Huckerby became the new landlord of Inn for A Penny earlier this year as reported by Gedling Eye in January (4).

In January, Jamie told Gedling Eye that he had big plans ahead for it’s future – with a focus on food and live sports.

Mr Huckerby said at the time: “I’m looking forward to seeing all the locals and new customers in the Penny from Friday supporting their ‘local pub'”.

Regular ‘Penny’ drinkers are delighted that Jamie is hoping to stay on as landlord if successful in his application.

One regular said: “Jamie is from around here – he knows the area, the regulars and runs a good pub. The pub feels like a ”local’ – and being a massive Forest fan he likes his sport and fits in well.”

Rolleston Drive development in Arnold ‘on hold’ as supplier of factory-built homes seeks buyer

Work on a new development in Arnold has been put on hold while the manufacturer of the factory-built homes destined for the site seeks a buyer to help raise cash to keep them operating

The announcement has angered those set to move into a new home on the site.

45 two-bedroom homes, 73 three-bedroom homes and 13 four-bedroom homes were set to be delivered to the site.

Modular housebuilder Ilke Homes were manufacturing the factory-built homes.

But according to Building.co.uk all manufacturing work has been put ‘on hold’ by the manufacturer while they seek a buyer.

The industry website claims the factory has been ‘temporarily closed’ after the troubled firm up was put up for sale by shareholders as it seeks fresh funding to keep going in the face of a looming cash crunch.

A total of 46 homes were being made available through shared ownership from Snugg Homes, part of Jigsaw Homes Group.

The remaining 85 for affordable rent would have been managed by Jigsaw Homes Midlands and allocated to local people.

The social housing provider said the delay in completing the development was ‘beyond their control’.

A spokesperson for Jigsaw Homes Group told Gedling Eye: “This is a difficult situation for all concerned.

“We have been informed that work at Rolleston Drive is on hold temporarily while ilke Homes negotiates with investors, but until then we have no further information.

“We appreciate this is upsetting for those who have been allocated and reserved homes.

“We have been working with Gedling Borough Council to let them know the situation and to offer people advice about their options, based on their individual circumstances.

“We do hope that the work will be completed so we can provide these much-needed affordable homes.”

Sean Duggan had been promised a new home on the development with his son.

“I was promised a house for me and my son after being in a horrendous situation,” he said.

“I’ve been given three different dates on which we were meant to get the property. However each time it was pushed back.

“The council have made me get all my side sorted, which I did and met their time frames and this was really stressful as I am a single parent and I also work.

Now we’ve been informed via an email sent from Jigsaw Homes overnight informing me that we no longer are getting the house.

“We’ve waited a ridiculous amount of months and provided everything they’ve requested. We’re now having to go back on the search list, which I think personally is outrageous given what my child and I have been through and our circumstances!

“It’s truly disgusting and devastating that this has happened.”

ASHES TO ASHES: Slog lies ahead for Ravenshead cricket podcaster who plans to walk to every Test Match for charity

A Ravenshead man is hoping to raise a quarter of a million pounds for charity by taking on the challenge of walking to every Ashes Test match

Slogging It presenter Johnno Gordon, 40, and co-hosts Simon Roberts and Eugene Berger will be walking between all five grounds this summer.

The money will be donated to The Lord’s Taverners – the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity.

The challenge began this Monday, with the trio heading off from Lord’s Taverners headquarters in Chancery Lane, London, aiming to make it to Edgbaston, Birmingham, by the time the First Test starts on Friday.

They will then embark on a gruelling route that will take them from Birmingham to London – Lord’s – London to Leeds – Headingley – Leeds to Manchester – Old Trafford – then Manchester back to London for the final match at the Oval at the end of July.

Having initially started their podcast to encourage people to talk about cricket and their mental health, the trio realised they could make an invaluable difference and raise vital funds.

Gordon said: “Originally Lord’s Taverners CEO Mark Curtin and I were talking about a challenge we could do together, and the first idea was RideLondon.

“The three of us and Mark were thinking about doing it on tandems. We couldn’t get hold of tandems and we couldn’t get the places, so we replaced that with this. It was Simon’s idea about walking between all the Ashes venues and hopefully watching a bit of cricket!

“We’ve had great support. We had a guard of honour from the office when we set out, which was quite surreal for us. We all felt a bit bashful, but everyone at the Lord’s Taverners has been brilliant in getting behind us, offering any support we need.”

The Lord’s Taverners impacts the lives of young people facing the challenges of inequality.

The charity works across the UK and beyond to provide inclusive and impactful cricket programmes, empowering young people with disabilities and from disadvantaged communities.

The trio are taking on the challenge to support the charity’s work to positively impact the lives of young people facing the challenges of inequality.

Gordon added: “I’ve been a Taverner for the best part of ten years now and through the podcast we’ve got Eugene and Simon involved.

“I’ve just loved the charity ever since I’ve got involved. We get to go to some nice events, but it’s very much about spreading the love of the game we have to then bring funds in that aid not only the four brilliant programmes they run but the kids that they directly help off the back of it.

“The whole ethos of the Tavs is about empowering people through cricket – it really focuses on helping young disadvantaged people.

“I’m incredibly proud to be a Taverner and incredibly proud to be doing this walk in aid of the Taverners.

“The idea is if we can raise £250,000 that is something we can be very proud of, but with the majority of that money going to Tavs we can really help empower those young people through cricket.

“It’s something that the three of us are very passionate about.”
