Carlton Town embraces future by enabling fans to use Bitcoin to buy matchday tickets, food and drink

A football club has announced it will be accepting matchday payments in digital currency during the new season.

Carlton Town will accept Bitcoin from fans buying tickets, food and drink at their stadium on Stoke Lane as an alternative to card and cash.

Digital payments will start being accepted from this weekend when the club hosts a massive pre-season game against Merthyr Town.

The club said they are hoping the decision to accept Bitcoin will help attract ‘a different audience’.

They said the only difference customers will see is the creation of a separate terminal accepting Bitcoin for matchday entry to the ground.

Netherfield resident spared sleepless nights after Safer Streets beef up security on her home for free following vandal attack

A victim of a vandal attack on her home in Netherfield says she can finally sleep normally after having free security devices fitted on her house.

Tracy Hunt was so frightened after her front window was smashed that she slept downstairs for months so she could react quickly if her house was targeted again.

The 55-year-old has since had a Ring video camera doorbell fitted as well as CCTV at the back of her home, thanks to the Safer Streets scheme, and says she now feels much safer.

She is one of dozens of victims of burglary and other neighbourhood crimes in Netherfield and Colwick who have been offered free security upgrades to prevent repeat incidents.

PICTURED: The smashed window at Tracy’s home

It comes after the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire secured £3 million of Home Office funding for Safer Streets projects that help reduce neighbourhood crime and antisocial behaviour, as well as violence against women and girls. These are being delivered in partnership with Nottinghamshire Police and local authorities, including Gedling Borough Council.

The mother-of-four, of Carnarvon Street, Netherfield, said the incident happened last October, close to a year after her partner died following medical complications.

“It was about 10.45pm and I heard this bang. When I looked, somebody had thrown a glass bottle at the window and it had broken the outside window pane,” she said.

“Two hours later they came back and did it again and a Prosecco bottle came flying through the living room and it smashed right through.

“I slept downstairs until it was fixed because I didn’t dare go to bed. I didn’t leave the house because I was too frightened to go out. It just added to the extra stress that I was already going through with losing my partner.”

But help came when Tracy heard she could be eligible for free security devices through the Safer Streets scheme.

She was visited by burglary reduction officer PCSO Verena Mawer, of Nottinghamshire Police, who arranged for contractors to install the gadgets.

“It has definitely given me peace of mind,” said Tracy. “I feel a lot better.

“It is just nice to know that if anyone did anything again I’ve got the footage which gives you evidence.

“It is brilliant. They came out pretty quickly, they were friendly, and I would definitely recommend it.”

As well as devices to protect people’s homes, Safer Streets has also funded a CCTV camera on the edge of the Victoria Retail Park to deter car cruisers causing nuisance, as well as automatic number plate recognition cameras, a Shop Watch radio scheme to deter shoplifting, Safer Streets warden patrols and environmental improvements to make people feel safer.

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry said Tracy was a prime example of how much of a difference Safer Streets could make to people’s lives.

“No one should feel unsafe in their own home, but through a variety of innovative projects, Safer Streets is starting to help,” she said.

“It is always great to hear the real impact this scheme can have on people’s safety – and their feelings of safety.”

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke MBE said: “Our Public Protection Team referred Tracy to the Police at the time when the anti-social behaviour took place so we are very pleased to see this swift action to support her and prevent it from happening again.

“This is a great example of the partnership work taking place on this Safer Streets Project in Netherfield and Colwick with Gedling Borough Council, Nottinghamshire Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner.”

Inspector Mark Stanley, District Commander for Gedling, said: “To hear first-hand that the Safer Streets project is having a real impact on people’s lives is great.

“Reading Tracy’s story and how she was afraid to even leave her home because of what happened is awful and I am so thankful she found out about the scheme and got in touch with us.

“The scheme is there to help reassure you and make you feel safe so if you have also been a victim of burglary please do get in touch and let us and our partners help you.”

  • If you live in the qualifying area of Netherfield and Colwick and have been a victim of burglary, contact verena.mawer@notts.police.uk to see if you could be eligible for free safety equipment.

These new supported living flats are now ready to rent at former Bruno pub site in Carlton

Twenty-three new apartments are now ready to be rented out on the former Bruno pub site in Carlton.

Purpose-built to offer supported living, these brand new flats are the result of joint working between Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) and Nottinghamshire County Council.

The fully furnished homes will be rented out to people who need a bit of extra help to live independently and offer them the time and space to learn essential life skills before moving on.

Commissioned by the county council and delivered by NCHA’s care and support team, two separate support projects will run from the new development.

Branching Out South, an extension to the existing young person’s service in the north of the county, will let ten flats to young people 16-21 years old who are at risk of, or experiencing homelessness. The new residents will get dedicated support to learn how to run a home, plan their finances and prepare themselves for independent accommodation.

The other thirteen flats will offer short-term accommodation for NCHA’s new Stepping Stones project. The service for adults living with a learning disability, mental health condition, physical disability or autism will offer a home with support for up to six months. It will provide a vital ‘stepping stone’ for people coming out of a more supported setting, such as hospital, or moving on from receiving care from immediate family. The new project will work with them to build their confidence and learn essential life skills; to prepare them for independent accommodation.

Out-of-hours emergency support will be offered to all 23 flats by NCHA’s Customer Wellbeing team.

The building and self-contained flats occupy the site of the Earl of Chesterfield pub – known locally as the Bruno- and have been designed for purpose, to best suit the people that will be living and receiving support there.

Gemma DeBrito, assistant director of Homes and Wellbeing for NCHA said: “Sensitively designed, trauma-informed spaces impact our wellbeing. Creating beautiful spaces bring about positive benefits to not only the people that live in care and support services, but also those who work in them. The design of Earls Court has been created in such a way, that the very landscape of the building will contribute towards improving the positive outcomes of the people who will live there.”

At a celebration event on July 6, representatives from NCHA and Nottinghamshire County Council invited involved agencies, local residents and businesses, to take a tour of the flats and learn more about the support services.

Cllr Matt Barney, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health at Nottinghamshire County Council said: “These new flats will offer supported accommodation for some of the vulnerable people we work with, such as young people moving on from care or facing homelessness, and people with autism, a mental health issue or learning or physical disability. The support on offer will help the residents to regain the skills they need or learn new ones, to help them take the next steps to live fulfilling and independent lives within their local community”

Designed and developed by NCHA’s in-house team Pelham, and built by contractors MyPad, the development cost in the region of £3.5 million and was joint funded by Homes England and NCHA. NCHA is in a Strategic Partnership with Homes England, enabling them to deliver new, low-cost homes across the East Midlands and East of England.

Family fun day at Woodborough pub for mental health wellbeing charity

A charity is hoping a fun day will help raise vital funds to help empower those suffering from mental health problems.

The fun day is being held at the Nag’s Head in Woodborough and is being organised by Walking4Hope – a new Nottinghamshire mental health charity.

The event is taking place on Saturday, September 2, from 1pm until 6pm and families will be able to enjoy face painting, games a bouncy castle, raffle and entertainment.

The money raised will help the charity to empower individuals and families experiencing mental health problems to make informed choices about how they live and recover and they achieve this by promoting resilience through nature.

Jake, the son of John Bell, charity director took his own life in 2020 aged just 15 and the sad event was the reason behind him founding the charity.

Being Ex-Army, John spent the first year after Jake’s passing, pushing himself through physical challenges to counter balance his mental struggles. This led to John being able to find a place of solitude in the great outdoors and building resilience through nature.

John has chosen to dedicate his life to sharing his love for Jake and using the strength from that love to help others.

Gedling borough’s ‘elite’ chip shops, according to Scores on the Doors

There is a fantastic array of fish and chip shops across Gedling borough, offering their own versions of the nation’s favourite meal. But with so many to choose from, how are we to rank them?

When it comes to a good chippy, there are so many factors to consider – from crunchy chips, to crispy batter.

One way to set one apart from another – or at least to make a start – is by prioritising the takeaways by good hygiene ratings. That’s where Scores on the Doors comes in – it’s an online repository of local authority data on the cleanliness of local food businesses.

Council officers regularly visit restaurants and takeaways, inspecting them for food handling hygiene, building condition and record keeping, scoring them between zero and five. The lowest score means that “urgent improvement is required”, while top marks means that “hygiene standards are very good”.

Additionally, Scores on the Doors awards “elite” status to venues which achieve the top score of five for three years in a row.

Did your local chip shop make the list?
