Ban on smoking in cars with children inside comes into force tomorrow

0

SMOKERS in Gedling are being reminded that lighting up in a car with children inside will become illegal from tomorrow.

Under the new legislation – which comes into force from October 1 – it will be a criminal offence in England and Wales to smoke in any vehicle with someone aged younger than 18 present. Anyone caught flouting the new law – which is intended to protect children from the dangers of passive smoking – will face a £50 fine.

It will also be an offence for a driver not to stop a passenger smoking while under-18s are in the vehicle.

Drivers will only exempt when driving convertible cars with the roof is completely down. Smoking while windows or sunroofs are open, air conditioning is on or while sitting in the open doorway is still an offence.

Although 17-year-old drivers and those with provisional licences are also covered by the law, those aged 17 with no one else in the car are exempt.

The rules apply to motorhomes, caravans and camper vans when they are being used as vehicles, but not when they are being used as living accommodation.

E-cigarettes are not covered by the new legislation.

Jane Ellison MP, the Under Secretary of State for Public Health, said: “Three million children are exposed to second-hand smoke in cars, putting their health at risk. We know that many of them feel embarrassed or frightened to ask adults to stop smoking which is why the regulations are an important step in protecting children from the harms of secondhand smoke.”

Daybrook play area to receive £65k facelift

0

A popular Daybrook play area is about to get a major facelift thanks to funding worth £65,000.

The play area on Salop Street Recreation Ground will be closed to the public from Monday, October 5 to allow transformation work to begin.

The revamp is being funded using £65,000 capital funding which has been secured through local housing and commercial developments in the area.

The work is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete and the play area will be closed to the public during this time.

As well as the traditional playground favourites, the park will also gain a new multi-activity unit which includes 4-metre-long monkey bars, a climbing wall, tubular slide and spinner.

There will also be a bowl swing, tic-tac-toe play panel and lottery play wheel, to encourage group play and social interaction.

Councillor Peter Barnes, Portfolio Holder for Environment said he was delighted that funding for the improvement works has finally been found.

He said: “We’re really pleased to have got this funding to revamp the Salop Street play area which was in need of some improvements. The range of new equipment will keep the children entertained and help them improve their social skills while having fun.”

Goose Fair toy safety warning to Gedling residents

0

Nottingham’s Trading Standards service is urging people from Gedling who plan to visit this year’s Goose Fair to be on the lookout for dangerous toys and goods which may be on sale.

The warning comes after trading standards officers at Nottingham City Council seized almost 500 items on sale at the fair last year that were found to be unsafe or incorrectly labelled. These included novelty items, toys, fashion items and electrical goods.

Three traders were subsequently brought before the courts and fined for selling dangerous toys earlier this year. Trading Standards will have a presence at the fair again this year and will be checking for items which shouldn’t be on sale.

Community Protection’s Trading Standards team has now prepared some useful shopping tips to help visitors enjoy a safe trip to the fair, which starts tomorrow and runs until Sunday. These include:

  • Check that toys are labelled and instructions given are clear and are followed
  • Ensure that only toys suitable for the correct age group are given to under-threes
  • Check that goods/toys are working before you give them to children to play with
  • Toys and electrical goods should be marked with a CE symbol
  • Ensure that children are supervised by an adult when they begin playing with a new item purchased at the fair
  • Avoid buying the latest craze. Recent examples include electrical swords with a laser strength 16 times that permitted by legislation, large soft toys with loose eyes and noses which contravened safety regulations because of a choking risk
  • Shoppers should never buy fireworks from a fair, market stall or car boot sale. No fireworks should be on sale at or near to Goose Fair as fireworks can only be sold from registered premises for a four-week period from October 15 until November 10. Unlicensed sellers may be selling fireworks which don’t meet the British Standard, so could be dangerous
  • Never buy any high-value items because given the nature of a temporary fair, you can’t normally take things back. If there is a problem with your purchase you could find it very difficult to obtain redress.

Jane Bailey, Trading Standards manager at Nottingham City Council, said: “Goose Fair is a great event held every year and enjoyed by thousands of people. We want families to have a fun time but not face the potential dangers involved with buying an item from the fair which is unsuitable or dangerous.

“The points highlighted by the Trading Standards team are worth bearing in mind, and to further reassure the public we will have officers at the fair monitoring the items up for sale.”

  • If shoppers experience problems with purchases made at the fair or they suspect that traders are selling unsafe items, they should report it to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04050

Broomhill House closure plans approved by NHS chiefs

1

Controversial plans to close a mental health rehabilitation centre in Gedling have been approved.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare bosses yesterday confirmed that proposals to shut Broomhill House have now been given the go ahead.

Campaigners had been fighting to save the service – which has been based in Gedling for over 20 years – since a consultation over its future was announced back in June.

NHS Nottinghamshire broke the news to campaigners at a public meeting held at Duncan Macmillan House yesterday morning (24).

They also confirmed that Heather Close in Mansfield will close.

Broomhill House provides care and treatment for patients recovering from mental health conditions but are not ready to return home. It also provides an outreach service for patients in the local community so they can live at home.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust today said that the centre will remain open until all inpatients have been assessed.

A spokesperson for NHS Nottinghamshire told Gedling Eye: “Following a comprehensive consultation, Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s Board of Directors has approved plans to close two rehabilitation units, Heather Close in Mansfield and Broomhill House in Nottingham.

“This decision has not been taken lightly and the Board is mindful of the strong views raised during the extended consultation period. We have taken notice of those views and we will be improving the support offered to carers and people using the enhanced community rehabilitation service to make sure that they do not fall into crisis.”

“This decision is in line with the Trust’s long term clinical strategy to enhance community services and reduce the number of inpatient beds.

“We have recruited additional staff to the team and that team will ensure the continuity of care for current inpatients once discharged and those supported in outreach.

“The Community Rehabilitation team will be working from Manor Road, which is only just along from Broomhill House so for many clients there will be very little change.”

They added: “We are confident that this decision will not result in an increase in admissions and that we will be able to help more people to live successfully in the community.”

Millers make new signing

Carlton Town has this week completed the signing of Kieron Walker from Mickleover Sports.

The talented defender has also played for Belper Town and Grantham Town and is a player new Millers manager Wayne Scott rates highly.

Scott is eager to make big improvements to his squad folloing Carlton’s disappointing start to the season

Another new signing, winger Kofi Halliday, came on as a second-half substitute for The Millers against Newcastle Town and impressed during Saturdays 2-1 defeat.

Scott is working hard to change the clubs fortunes after a dissapointing season last time round under Les Mcjannet and after a poor start this time round under Scott.

Despite a poor start to the season, Carlton Town’s website reports that the board are prepared to give Scott, who was recruited over the summer, time to move the club forward again.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Senior figures at the club understand how difficult it is for the new manager, given the departures and limited budget at the club and all are focused on a positive end game, which will hopefully see The Millers move onwards and upwards once again in the coming months.”

Winning weekend for Real United FC teams

All of Real United’s Saturday teams won at the weekend with the first team safely through to the second round of the precision Nottinghamshire Senior League Cup after seeing off first division Ashland Rovers 5-0.

The Under 15s won 3-0 at Edwalton Cavaliers whilst the U14s won their third game of the season in impressive fashion 13-0 against Winthorpe / Coddington Tigers.

However the Veterans Team were soundly beaten 6-0 on Sunday at Poets.

Police urge Gedling residents to hang up on council tax phone scam

0

POLICE are warning residents in Gedling borough about a council tax phone scam currently doing the rounds.

The cold caller tells the resident that they are calling to let them know that they have been placed in the wrong council tax bracket for a number of years and that they are entitled to a rebate.

The fraudster tells them that in order to receive the rebate they will need to pay an administration fee in advance; the payment they ask for varies between £60-350. Once they have provided their details for the payment they will no longer be able to contact the person they spoke to.

A spokesperson for Action Fraud, the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and internet crime, said: “Fraudsters are relentless and will work tirelessly to find new ways to convince people to part with their money. These criminals make several calls and will be particularly convincing and provide good reason for why the person should make an immediate payment.  We urge people to be vigilant and never respond to these callers who are simply trying to scam you”.

Police say residents should keep in mind these preventative tips:

* If the call is uninvited, hang up.

* Do not allow remote access to your computer.

* Never divulge pin numbers or passwords: banks don’t ask for them either.

* If you believe you’ve fallen for this scam, get your computer checked by a reputable company and contact your bank to stop further payments.

* Report the scam if you have been affected to Action Fraud: 0300 123 2040 or at www.actionfraud.police.uk

Free Wi-Fi access for borough bus passengers

0

Bus passengers across Gedling borough will soon have access to free 4G Wi-Fi during their journey after Nottingham City Transport announced plans to offer internet access on all of its services.

Nottingham’s biggest bus operator will become the first public transport provider in the city to offer free Wi-Fi on every one of its buses.

Nottingham City Transport Marketing Manager Anthony Carver-Smith said:  “We first launched free on board Wi-Fi in September 2013, and it proved to be so popular that we quickly aimed to roll it out to our entire network. We’re very proud to have achieved this only two years later.”

Supplied by Swedish-based giants, Icomera, which supplies rail, road and sea operators across the globe, Nottingham City Transport’s superfast, reliable 4G capabilities have been hugely welcomed by passengers over the last two years, and the UK’s 2014 Bus Operator of the Year has recorded an incredible 2 million individual Wi-Fi sessions since it first went live.

Anthony Carver-Smith added: “Using free Wi-Fi really enables our passengers to really make the most of their time on board – whether that’s checking what they’re about to face when they walk into the office, or enjoying a bit of ‘gaming downtime’ after a hard day’s work,”

“It makes journeys even more enjoyable and stress-free, and we hope it will help encourage more people to experience how the best public transport can be in the 21st Century.”
