A Carlton school has been awarded a prestigious prize for its work in bringing the world into the classroom.

CARLTON le Willows Academy has picked up British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its outstanding work in international education.

The award comes following involvement in a series of international projects including twinning with the St Francis Xavier school in Goa and taking students on a cultural and sporting trip to China – thought to be the first trip of its kind for the region.

The Academy has also spent the last 18 months as an expert centre leading 16 partner schools, both primary and secondary from across Nottinghamshire, in helping them deliver the Global Learning Programme.

Senior teacher Trudi Purnell, who has been leading the Global Learning programme at Carlton le Willows, said: “The whole process aims to give our students a better understanding of the wider world so they gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens.

New crematorium in Lambley set to open before end of year

0

Work on Gedling borough’s new crematorium is almost complete and it will be open for business before the end of the year.

Building work at the site on Catfoot Lane in Lambley began in January of this year and it’s now drawing to a close.

Once the new crematorium is up and running it’s expected to look after four to five funerals a day and will ease  pressure on the existing crematoria at Bramcote, Wilford Hill and Mansfield, which are amongst the busiest in the country.

The project was delayed last year following  a legal challenge by a site neighbour despite permission being granted by Gedling Borough Council’s planning committee.

The High Court eventually backed the Borough Council’s decision to allow the Westerleigh Group to develop the new facility on Green Belt land outside the village.

MATCH REPORT: Carlton Town 2 – 3 Gresley FC

Carlton came into the game on the back of the win against Witton, but Gresley took the game to them, writes Josh Hodgson

Pearson Mwanyongo carved through the Millers defence on three occasions leaving Fura one-on-one only for Jack Steggles to keep Carlton in it.

Nangle could not really get into the game, Gresley’s defence showing great discipline to crowd him out from his team mates. Lucas Harrison then hit the woodwork for Gresley in the dying minutes, with only the half time whistle granting Carlton some respite.

Courtney Meade then began the second half as he left off driving the ball into the top right corner to open the scoring. But not long after a rare goal from Kieran Walker evened the scoreline.

Carlton started to get back into the game with Josh Rae going just wide shortly after.

His central partner Romaine then drifted forward only to find the keeper and quick counter quickly put an end to the Carlton resurgence, Pearson Mwanyango restoring Gresley’s one goal cushion. They didn’t stop there as Meade got his second, a beautiful strike from the edge of the area, across the keeper to increase their lead.

Carlton found the net in the dying minutes through Kieran Walker but the final whistle ended any hopes of a point.

Greeley deserved the points and look like a force to be reckoned with and leave Stoke Lane giving Carlton a lot to think about.

Man of the Match: Pearson Mwanyongo

Entertainment factor: 4/5

Although he didn’t spot the vehicle number plate, he thought they were driving a white flatbed Ford Transit van.
