Willows Medical Centre to be auctioned off after being ‘placed in receivership’

0

By Alex Smith

A surgery in Carlton that was  placed in special measures has now been repossessed, it has been confirmed.

The Willows Medical Centre, in Carlton, Nottingham, was closed in June by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), leaving about 4,000 patients needing to seek treatment elsewhere.

It was put into special measures because patients were at risk of harm after it was discovered a healthcare assistant posed as a doctor and carried out internal examinations without being qualified to do so

A subsequent CQC report revealed the healthcare assistant also diagnosed patients and appeared on the appointment system as a doctor.

NHS England and Nottingham North & East Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) received a formal resignation from Dr Sylvester Nyatsuro – who ran the practice – in relation to his GP contract in August.

Councillors were told by CCG officials on Tuesday the premises was “placed in receivership” from Dr Nyatsuro last month and will be auctioned off “shortly”.

A Carlton woman has launched a campaign to warn people about the dangers of leaving their drinks unattended after her own was spiked in a Notts pub.

Sian Reid has launched a Facebook page called Watch Your Drink Spike Awareness in a bid to highlight the problem after becoming a victim of a spiking a few weeks ago.

As well as setting up a Facebook page, she also hopes to have posters put up in pubs across the area to remind of people about the dangers of leaving their drinks unattended.

The Millers Barn pub and restaurant, where Sian works, is one of the first pubs to agree to back her poster campaign.

New beacons installed at pedestrian crossings in Netherfield after residents voice safety fears

0

New brighter belisha beacons have now been installed in Netherfield in a bid to improve safety after a pedestrian was struck by a car on a pedestrian crossing a fortnight ago.

The crossings on Victoria Road each have two new LED beacons which are brighter than the previous ones which council workers removed this morning (11).

People in the town called on the council to make the crossings safer after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle while using the zebra crossing next to Eight Barbers nearly two weeks ago.

Gareth Coles, team manager for Accident Investigation for Via East Midlands, which manages highways services on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We are very sorry to learn of this incident. This financial year we are upgrading the belisha beacons on this crossing to more modern LED versions which will make them brighter and more obvious to drivers.

“The zebra crossings on Victoria Road are already raised to act as a speed deterrent. Humped crossings as a traffic calming measure are the most effective way of reducing speed and reducing rat-running from vehicles.

“Pedestrians should continue to be vigilant when using the crossing, and if a car attempts to go through when someone is using the zebra crossing then the driver is at fault and people should not hesitate it to report it to their local police who have the powers to deal with moving traffic offences.

“We also have Road Safety experts who upon request from schools, can arrange to visit the school and discuss road safety advice with children.”

A teenager from Calverton is amongst a group of seven young people from across the county being recognised for their outstanding achievements at an awards ceremony later this month.

Cameron Lei-Ford was one of 80 young people nominated this year for Nottinghamshire County Council’s 4Uth Awards with the winners being voted for by more than 65,000 people on social media.

The 15-year-old was recently announced as district winner for Gedling and will now also be in the running for countywide winner.

He was nominated for the award by youth worker Mohammed Yaseen who is based at Calverton Young People’s Centre which Cameron attends.

Mr Yaseen revealed he nominated Cameron for overcoming a number of personal problems before going on to successfully help other young people in his local community by setting up a successful social enterprise.

He said: “For many years Cameron had experienced bullying because of being overweight. He struggled with poor self-image and his academic performance deteriorated and he was seen by youth workers to be behaving in an anti-social way more and more.

“With support from youth workers, Cameron became involved in community clean-ups. He started with his own street and then parts of his wider neighbourhood.

Hallowe’en comes early to farm in Linby as pumpkin crop goes on sale

0

Trick or treaters can get their hands on Hallowe’en pumpkins three weeks early from Linby’s Brooke Farm thanks to a healthy combination of a wet early summer and a sunny September this year.

‘Mars’ pumpkins are available at the farm’s shop for £1 each along with the larger ‘Charmed’ variety at £3 each, both of which have been grown on the farm or on Nottinghamshire County Council land in Skegby.

Ian Holland, the farm’s manager, said: “We usually have pumpkins ready for around a week before Hallowe’en, so it is very early to start selling this popular ghoulish vegetable.

“It’s been a good year for growing pumpkins as there has been plenty of sunshine and rain to encourage them to grow to a good size quickly.”

The farm shop offers a range of home-grown produce for sale including free range eggs, seasonal vegetables, salad and fruit, flowers and plants along with locally-sourced products such as bread, milk, preserves, pickles, cakes and biscuits.

Produce grown at Brooke farm is sold at the farm shop in Main Street, Linby, and is open Monday to Thursday 8am to 3.45pm, Friday 8am to 3.15pm and Saturday 8am to 3pm.

For further information on the shop call 0115 963 2638.

MATCH REPORT: South Normanton 1 – 0 Linby CWFC

Linby lost their winning streak this evening when they were beaten 1-0 by South Normanton who now sit second in the league, writes Kieran Booker.

The two sides competed in quite an even match but it was the Derbyshire side who had the better of the chances before winning the game through a first half Robert Fretwell penalty.

The contest started on an even footing with both sides generating half chances. The first moment of note was in the 21st minute when Charlie Holman saw his effort chalked off for the home side. The referee disallowed the goal, which had come as the result of a corner because he saw a foul take place in the build up.

Four minutes later, the Shiners were ahead. Young defender Edward Heginbotham was bested by usual South Normanton first teamer Tom Lewis and unfortunately for his side brought the player down in the box leading to a penalty. Robert Fretwell stepped up and placed his effort low to the keeper’s bottom left to open the scoring.

Fretwell nearly doubled his personal tally two minutes later when he was able to cut inside his man before rocketing a shot across goal. His effort clipped Joshua Downie’s left hand post before deflecting away from danger.

Linby felt they should have been awarded a penalty of their own just after the half hour mark. Captain Aidy Harris was clearly bundled over in the box when preparing to receive a cross but the referee waved his claims away despite being in a good position to see the foul.

Both Fretwell and Lewis had chances to score a second early in the second half. First Tom Lewis saw his shot curl over from the edge of Linby’s area before Robert Fretwell’s chance forced a great save from Joshua Downie, the ball deflected to Shaun Smith who could only fire the rebound wide.

Just after the hour mark Linby had another claim for a penalty. Again captain Aidy Harris was involved, this time the playmaker was getting back to his feet when he was chopped back down. Both dugouts argued with the referee over his indecision to penalise either side, South Normanton were demanding the Linby man received a card for diving whilst the away side were screaming for penalty but neither was given.

Matt Murphy had Linby’s best chances. He could only fire a shot straight at the keeper after a great team passing move after 74 minutes before seeing his shot deflected for a corner which came to nothing 4 minutes later.

With the game nearly over it was the home side who nearly doubled their lead. Substitute Josh Hooley was able to win the ball on the edge of the Linby box before slipping over, recovering to his feet and was given time to fire a shot at goal. He saw his effort hit the Linby post and again bounce away from danger.

Linby will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they host Matlock Town Reserves next Saturday.

MATCH REPORT: Carlton Town 3 – 1 Chasetown

Both teams came into this game hoping for a win to boost their campaigns.  Chasetown took the game to Carlton in the opening stages with Craddock going close but it was Carlton that found the break writes Josh Hodgson.
A long ball forward from Lawrence Gorman found Niall Davis whose shot was deflected past the keeper for the opener.
Not long after the same man consolidated their lead. Carlton found a long shot from Danny Gordon ricochet between players only for Niall to find the ball again to drive into the bottom left to make it 2-0.
Second half saw Chasetown take the game to the Millers. Several chances for James Dance and Nathan Rooney were blocked by Carlton’s keeper Jack Steggles. The pressure eventually caught the home side out
with Mitchell Piggon lobbing the keeper after a poorly cleared set piece. Chasetown then took their momentum forward but to no avail.
Come the last five minutes of the game Carlton didn’t settle for the win, they took their chance from a break for Jake Wholey to slot past the keeper. Gaz Bee, Carlton’s Deputy Commercial Manager, said
“Carlton soaked up the pressure when they needed too and thats why they deserve the win.”
