Arnold pub getting £180k facelift hopes real ales will be key to success

An exciting new era beckons for one of Arnold’s best-loved pubs.

Over £180,000 is being spent on revamping the Cross Keys pub which is situated on the town’s Front Street.

And to mark the occasion, a special ale is being brewed and will be on sale when the new-look pub reopens on October 25. ‘Keys Ale’ has been especially created and brewed for the Arnold boozer by the recently revived and historic Nottingham Brewery.

So far the renovation work has also created three new jobs at the much-loved Stonegate Pub Company-owned site.

The Front Street venue will receive a complete makeover that will see new fixtures and fittings introduced, along with the introduction of new furniture and the installation of a new sports area.

The pub is also getting a new darts board for the two teams at the pub – which is a firm favourite for sports fans in the area. This is thanks to the complete sports coverage at the Cross Keys thanks to its five HD screens, which show Sky Sports, BT Sport and At The Races.

The burglary took place on Beckhampton Road at 10am yesterday (11) where a male has entered through an insecure door.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen a male wearing grey boots, black trousers and a chequered top.

Pregnant women and young children in Gedling borough being urged to book in for flu jab this winter

Pregnant women and parents with young children in Gedling borough are being urged to book in for a flu jab this year after latest figures only a third booked in for a vaccination last year.

Between September 2015 and January, 34.8% of expectant women – who are registered with a GP in the city – booked in for a jab, below the national average of 42.3% and the regional average of 41.4%.

Meanwhile, 33.2% of two to four year olds in the city registered for a vaccination, again below the national average of 34.4% and regional average of 40%.

The calls come following the launch of the Stay Well This Winter campaign on Wednesday, run jointly by Public Health England and NHS England.

National health bosses have announced the vaccination programme is being extended to those in year 3 at school – an overall increase of about 600,000.

An annual flu vaccine nasal spray will now be offered to children aged two, three and four year olds, and to pupils in year 1 and year 2.

Pregnant women, anyone over 65, anyone who is very overweight – with a body mass index over 40 – children and adults with weakened immune systems or an underlying health condition can get a flu jab.

Council unveils new plans to tackle child poverty problem across Notts

New plans to help reduce poverty for the county’s 26,000 children whose future life chances are at a disadvantage in terms of their health, education and finding work, are set to get the go ahead by Nottinghamshire County Council’s children and young people’s committee on Monday.

Government data, at the time these plans were being drawn up, highlight that 15.9 per cent of children (ages 0-18) are living in poverty in Nottinghamshire, slightly below the national average of 18 per cent and 17 per cent across the East Midlands.

However child poverty levels are higher than the national average in Ashfield (21.5%) and Mansfield (21.8%)

The council’s plans include offering more employment support for adults with mental health issues, piloting ways to help take the stigma out of poverty in schools and ensuring that next year’s universal free childcare for three and four year olds has a high take-up.

All the schemes are in Nottinghamshire County Council’s ( NCC) latest Child Poverty and Life Chances Action Plan.

More than 20 actions are being proposed as part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s ( NCC) latest Child Poverty and Life Chances Action Plan – underlining its commitment to continuing to tackle the causes and mitigating the effects of poverty especially in the areas of highest need.

Here’s Matt Bright’s weekly round-up from all the Mellish RFC teams…

Mellish 1st XV 47 v 3 Ollerton 1st XV
Mellish 1st XV collected another impressive victory and bounced back from a narrow defeat last week to Moderns, over a game Ollerton 1st XV.

Taking advantage of the opportunities created by the free flowing attacking rugby they are keen to play this season they lead 26-3 at half time with tries from Dave Mason, TJ Austin, Ben Archer and Craig Spencer, with 3 conversions from the boot of Ross Pickering.

Mellish continued to push hard in the 2nd half with a brace of tries from Will Creswell and TJ Austin collecting his 2nd of the game. All three conversions were a success for Ross Pickering giving Mellish a 47-3 victory and the perfect build up to their cup game at home vs Trentham this weekend.

Mellish 2nd XV 43 v 3 Ollerton 2nd XV

Mellish 2nd XV travelled to Ollerton in the Pennant buoyed by last week’s win over Moderns. With a much changed side for Mellish 2’s as well. However, players gelled quickly and an all-round team performance was capped off with a victory away from home for the 1st time this season. Tries came from Billy Page (2), Jon Riekstins, Nick Gil, James Colton, Ryan Clarke and Sibu. Kevin Welsh added 4 conversions from 7.

Mellish Under 16’s 19 v 5 Ashfield Under 16’s

The U-16s welcomed Ashfield to Mellish and in a hard fought game gained their first win of the season. Both teams started well and with 20 mins gone, Ashfield broke the deadlock with a well worked break down the wing. 5-0 to Ashfield. With it being a close encounter this is how it stayed until half time.
The lads matched Ashfield in every department and soon got on the score sheet, when half time sub, Ollie made a powerful run and break to cross the line. Adam converted to make the score 7-5 to Mellish. With tough tackling and great defensive work the lads battled hard to stay in front. Everyone put a hard shift in and where a credit to each other. With a clever kick, Mellish pushed Ashfield back deep into their 22, from the lineout, Ashfield made a mistake and Henry was first to the ball for a try. Again the team pushed on, and with the best move of the game, Mellish where awarded a free kick. With the opponents expecting a charge from the forwards into the corner, Jude quickly out thought them ran across field to score under the posts. A great try. Adam converted, 19-5. A great all round performance from the lads, the best they have played this season.
Well done to the U-16s

Mellish Under 15’s 5 v 34 Ashby Under 15’s

Mellish Under 15’s shuffled the deck against Ashby this weekend with a few players missing and started brightly taking a deserved lead through Curtis (getting his maiden try for the side). However, this just woke up the Ashby side and they played with more shape and structure against our rotated side, and once they hit their stride never looked back eventually running out victorious in the game. A big thanks to the players that stepped in and also played out of position. It will make selection more difficult for next week’s game vs Long Eaton away.

Mellish Under 14’s 80 v 10 Chesterfield Under 14’s

Mellish under 14’s continued their fine start to the season extending their unbeaten run in emphatic style against a game side from Chesterfield. Mellish under 14’s are building up an impressive squad and really moved into high gear to earn a big victory over Chesterfield.

Mellish Under 11’s

Mellish under 11’s travelled to Nottingham Casuals to take on the hosts under 11’s and Moderns under 11’s. Mellish proved too strong on the day by beating both sides with a great team performance on the day.

Police hunt for robber who threatened staff at Sherwood store with baseball bat

Nottinghamshire Police have today released an image of a man they want to speak to in connection with a robbery at a convenience store in Sherwood.

A man holding a baseball bat threatened staff and escaped with £300 cash and some bottles of spirits from the Londis store in Valley Road.

It happened at 8.10pm on Tuesday, September 20, 2016.

He wearing a black hoody with a distinctive zip and black tracksuit bottoms.

Anyone with information is urged to contact DC Rob Palethorpe at Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 814 of 20 September, 2016.

Plastic is fantastic for footballers in Gedling borough as new 3G pitch plan announced

A number of organisations have pitched in to to fund a new state-of-the-art playing surface for footballers in Gedling borough.

The Premier League and FA Facilities Fund have handed over £381,309 to Redhill Academy Trust and Gedling Borough Council who applied for a grant to pay for a new 3G pitch at Redhill Leisure Centre and also improve floodlighting.

The improvements will enable the borough to provide a first-class football facility for training, competitive matches and wider community use for its partner clubs Gedling Southbank FC and Arnold Town and also wider footballing community in the borough.

The new pitch will be available 7 days a week to provide much needed increased capacity for the borough’s clubs and teams to use for both training and competitive matches.

Youngster’s winning design set to brighten up former Carlton park pavilion

A Carlton youngster will soon see her artwork emblazoned across the wall of a park pavilion after winning a local design competition.

Pupils at four local primary schools were asked to design artwork to brighten up the pavilion at Onchan Park, and Carlton Central Junior School pupil Heather Cully emerged triumphant after submitting her entry with the theme “Fun in the park”.

Heather’s award-winning design will soon be covering the large wall facing the play area once a graffiti artist is hired to paint on her fabulous design.

The winner was selected by local councillors Paul Wilkinson and Nicki Brooks who said they were “bowled over” by the quality of the 170 designs they had to judge from.

Wife of Arnold police officer battling cancer makes fresh appeal for funding to pay for treatment in Germany

The family of a terminally-ill police officer from Arnold are renewing their appeal for donations to help pay for potentially life-saving treatment.

Sgt Phil Hogg was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July last year and was told that he only had months to live.

While the latest scan has shown no growth or spread of the cancer, the side effects of his chemotherapy treatment are increasing and there is concern that further treatment may be less effective.

The family say they now need £60,000 to pay for pioneering treatment which is available at the Hallwang Clinic in Germany. The total raised currently stands at £19,416.

CCTV video issued after attempted robbery at Carlton jewellers

Police have released CCTV footage following an attempted robbery at a Carlton jewellers.

It happened on Saturday, October 1 at around 9.45am. The man was challenged by staff and ran away empty handed.

Officers want to speak to the man in the CCTV who is described as black, of a stocky build and around 5ft 10ins tall.

If you recognise this man or have any information that might help, please contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101 quoting incident 302 of 1 October 2016.
