Presentation night rounds off season of success for Arnold School of Boxing

Arnold School of Boxing marked the end of their most successful season in their history with their annual awards presentation event at the Arnold Liberal Club.

The boxing club formed only three years ago by Clinton McPhilbin and Rob Butler, has this season produced the biggest squad in the club’s history – and also one of the largest in the East Midlands.

The winners at this year’s presentation evening are as follows:

Eagles get season off to flying start

Arnold Town’s start to the new season has left their loyal following feeling very optimistic for the season ahead.

Following on from a rather forgettable pre-season, the Eagles opened with a 3-1 win at Radcliffe Olympic on opening day, with Jawanza Grant (2) and Max Pashley the scorers.

Hoping to continue their great start with their first home game against last season’s EMCL Champions West Bridgford, they were stopped in their tracks by the weather. Twenty-four hours of constant rain saw the first postponement of the season due to a very waterlogged Eagle Valley pitch.

A few days later and Holbrook Sports were the first visiting side to arrive at Eagle Valley. The two sides were well matched but the balance swung in the favour of the visitors shortly after half time when Arnold were reduced to ten men. Conceding a soft penalty and a late strike condemned the Eagles to their first defeat of the season.

On Tuesday night it was back to Eagle Valley for the visit of Graham St Prims. A very polished performance saw the Eagles win 3-1 with goals from Jourdan Blair (2) and Jawanza Grant.

The newly formed side are gelling very nicely and performances are getting better with each game.

Next game was scheduled for Saturday, August 19 (away) but this has been postponed due to Dunkirk’s FA Cup involvement. This game has been switched to Tuesday, August 22 providing Dunkirk aren’t involved in any replay.

The next game at Eagle Valley is on Saturday, August 26 when local rivals Radford FC are the visitors.

Council to share action plan with Arnold residents following Rolleston Drive fire

Teams from Nottinghamshire County Council will tonight be knocking on the doors of residents in Arnold to discuss how they plan to respond to yesterday’s fire at a disused office block in the town.

Over 30 firefighters were called to the blaze on Rolleston Drive, and have since brought the fire under control.

Now Nottinghamshire County Council staff will be visiting local people to explain how they plan to respond to the incident and to also hear concerns from residents.

The leader of the Council, Cllr Kay Cutts, will also be attending.

The site, which was previously used by the Nottinghamshire County Council’s Building Direct, County Supplies, welfare rights and fleet management teams, has been vacant since March 2013.

The Council did sell the land, but the buyer pulled out in July 2016.

Security at the site included fencing around the site and boarding on buildings’ doors and windows, and the demolition of its buildings was planned for October but will be brought forward in response to the fire.

Motion-sensing CCTV had been introduced at various locations around the site in the last week as an extra deterrent for potential trespassers, which was designed to alert a security service if activated.
24-hour on site security staff is being introduced and along with higher security fencing prior to the site being cleared.

A police investigation is underway into the cause of the fire and the Council is assessing any further risks following the incident.

Councillor Kay Cutts, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We apologise for this incident and we are doing all we can to demolish the remaining buildings as soon as possible and introduce extra security measures to help prevent further incidents.

“We understand local people will be concerned about this incident and further risks so our staff and myself are meeting face-to-face with nearby residents to outline our immediate plans and discuss their concerns.”

Cheaper train tickets now available using new online tool

Rail passengers in Gedling borough can now get their hands on cheaper train tickets using a new online tool.

East Midlands Trains has launched a brand new ticket alert tool means customers don’t have to keep checking the firm’s website for tickets. They can simply sign up for email alerts and as soon as Advance tickets become available on a particular route on their chosen travel date, they are notified by email.

Lawrence Bowman, Commercial Director for East Midlands Trains, which has stations in Carlton, Burton Joyce and Netherfield, said: “Advance tickets are the cheapest train tickets you can buy and the earlier you book, the cheaper they are so this is a really positive result for our customers.

“Advance tickets are generally available to buy 12 weeks ahead of time but this can vary which is what makes the alert tool so handy.”

Customers can search for an Advance journey and register for the alert. The database then checks every night until that journey goes on sale. When Advance tickets become available for the dates the customer has searched, they will receive an email from East Midlands Trains.

Firefighters tackle blaze at derelict office block in Arnold

Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service have spent the afternoon tackling a blaze at an old derelict office block in Rolleston Drive, Arnold.

Firefighters posted on social media that the incident is’ now being scaled down’.

Officers revealed that 30 firefighters were drafted in to tackle the blaze at the site.

It is not yet known what caused the fire.

Deputy leader of Gedling Borough Council, Cllr Michael Payne, who is councillor for the Redhill ward, was expecting to speak to Nottinghamshire Police and also Nottinghamshire Fire Rescue this evening for an update.

He said: “In recent years and months I have consistently been raising concerns about the safety and state of the derelict site with Nottinghamshire County Council, who own the premises. Only recently I was expressing my serious concern about vandalism on the site.

He added: “I sincerely hope no-one has been injured and wish our emergency services the best in dealing with the fire.”

Items stolen overnight from vehicles in Ravenshead and Linby

Police are investigating after items were stolen from vehicles overnight in two nearby villages.

Officers said they received five reports of items being taken from vehicles in the Ravenshead and Linby area last night. (August 15).

The vehicles were seemingly left unlocked as no damage was caused entering the vehicle.

A Sat Nav has been stolen from one vehicle and a work bag containing a tool kit and jump leads from another.

The local beat team has viewed some CCTV of the crime taking place and have said that although the footage was very dark and the offenders could not be identified, it seems they were travelling on an off-road/crosser style bike.

A spokesman for the Gedling North neighbourhood beat team said: “Can we please remind people to ensure all vehicles are locked when leaving them, also making sure all valuables are removed.

“If residents notice anything suspicious, especially in cases of individuals looking onto properties or any off road style bikes travelling slowly around the area, please do not hesitate to dial us on 999/101 as required.”

Jobs could be under threat at an Arnold supermarket. 

The Asda store on Front Street was named by Retail Gazette as one of 18 ‘under performing’ stores where staff were being put into consultation by the supermarket giant.

A poor financial year has prompted Asda to look at making hundreds of redundancies or dramatically reduce the working hours of thousands of staff across the UK.

The UK’s third-biggest grocery retailer has now commenced a three-week consultation period with 3257 employees with regards to the future of their jobs.

The 18 under-performing stores listed, which includes the Arnold supermarket, were targeted after being identified as being overstaffed when compared to sales performances.

Once the consultations are completed, the eventual number of job losses is expected to be in the hundreds.

Workers union GMB told Retail Gazette it had been contacted by Asda staff who were “fearing for their jobs” after store managers were given new business plans that includes major reductions in working hours.

A spokesman for Asda said: “We are currently in discussions with a number of our stores about changes that are needed to the number of hours required to run that store for our customers,

“It is common practice for a supermarket to need to make changes to hours based on the changing shopping habits of customers.

“We understand that any conversations about change are unsettling but it is always our upmost priority to find alternative roles or working patterns for impacted colleagues.”

Man from Colwick jailed for seven years after city centre stabbing

A man from Colwick has been jailed for seven years after stabbing a man five times in the back during an altercation in Nottingham city centre.

Nthambi Mkanda, of Balmoral Road in Colwick, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday (August 11) following a five-day trial having previously pleaded not guilty to offences of wounding with intent.

The court heard how the 19-year-old was with friends when they became involved in an altercation with another group of men at around 2.40am on Saturday, March 4 2017.

Mkanda chased the victim along King Street and onto Trinity Square stabbing him five times in the back.

The victim was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre where he required stitches.

Officers launched an investigation and Mkanda was identified through CCTV and subsequently arrested.

Detective Constable James Hirst said: “We are pleased with the court outcome and hope it sends the message out that it is not acceptable to carry a knife or any form of weapon in Nottinghamshire.”

The opening game of the season did not disappoint as the Millers took the spoils.

A good chance to gauge what both clubs can look forward too for the rest of the year, showed that Carlton could be looking to climb the table, while Sheffield may be fighting towards the bottom.

Both sides started strongly but it was Daniel Gordon who opened the scoring following several errors from the away defence. Sheffield’s Ritchie Humphreys forced a save from Jack Steggles who was lucky to reach the ball, having timed his jump wrong.

Debutant Wilfried Gnahore found the net just after half time with a finish into the corner and It could have been three as Aaron Hooton came on and after a run, chipped over the keeper at a very narrow angle. Many said the goal could have been the best in recent history but was disallowed for a foul. Hooton got retribution five minutes later as he slotted a penalty calmly into the edge of the net meaning Carlton went home 3-0.

The Notts Senior Cup winners look to be a force to be reckoned with.
