Applications now open for secondary school places in Gedling borough

Parents with pupils due to move up to secondary school in Gedling borough next autumn can now apply for a place.

The application process for children transferring from primary schools to secondary schools in September 2018 opened on Monday (7) and will close on Tuesday, October 312017.

Parents in the borough will need to apply through Nottinghamshire County Council, even if they wish to apply for schools in other areas.

Nottinghamshire County Council service director for education, learning and skills, Marion Clay, said: “It probably seems no time at all since parents were looking for a reception place for their child and deciding which schools to apply for.

“However, if a child is about to move into Year 6 at primary school when they return to school after the summer holidays, parents and carers should receive a letter this week telling them how they can apply for a place for next September.”

The easiest way to apply is online at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/schooladmissions and this is the method the council advises parents to use.

Parents can also find more information about the  application process, schools, the number of places available or how places are allocated at that web address or can call 0300 500 80 80.

Secondary school offers will be made on Thursday 1 March 2018 by email to those who apply online. Parents and carers who apply by post will be sent notification by second class post that day.

Man bailed as investigation into death of Netherfield woman continues

A man arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman from Netherfield has today been released on police bail.

The 38-year old was arrested yesterday as part of an investigation into the death of Jennifer Blackwell.

Her body was yesterday exhumed  following a review, in consultation with HM Coroner and the family, as part of an investigation to establish the cause of the 43-year-old who lived on Norman Street in the town.

Investigators are continuing their work to learn what they can about the circumstances surrounding Jennifer’s death.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: “Jennifer’s family are being supported throughout this extremely distressing time and have requested privacy as I’m sure you can understand.

“They are very supportive of the work we are doing and we are accommodating their wishes as part of the very sensitive task at hand.”

Police have today exhumed the body from a graveyard in Carlton after a murder investigation was launched.

In the early hours of today (August 10) Nottinghamshire Police were working at a site in Carlton Cemetery, Cavendish Road as part of an ongoing operation.

Detective Superintendent Rob Griffin said: “Following a review, in consultation with HM Coroner and a family, we have begun an investigation to establish the cause of a 43-year-old woman’s death.

“Jennifer Blackwell died on 28 April 2017 in circumstances which, at the time, police believed to be non-suspicious. Following a review we have launched an investigation, for which an exhumation is deemed absolutely necessary.

“This is an unusual and extraordinarily sensitive matter, which Nottinghamshire Police is treating with great seriousness and respect.

“Jennifer’s family have been, and will be kept updated and supported throughout this extremely distressing time and have requested privacy as I’m sure you can understand. They are very supportive of the work we are doing and we are accommodating their wishes as part of the very sensitive task at hand.

“Investigators are currently hard at work to learn what they can about the circumstances surrounding Jennifer’s death.

“A 38-year-old man was arrested this morning on suspicion of murder and will be questioned by officers in due course. He remains in police custody.”

Help for unemployed at work clubs running in Gedling borough

Out-of-work people in Gedling borough can now benefit from an employment initiative running in the area.

A number of work clubs have been set up and currently operate in Arnold, Netherfield and Gedling.

The sessions are run by Gedling Homes, but are open to everyone in the area – not just tenants.

Those attending one of the clubs can get advice on writing CVs, learn and practice interview techniques and skills and learn how to job search using the UK’s most powerful online jobseeker toolkit, known as MyWorkSearch.

The clubs take place at the following locations:

St George’s Centre, Netherfield on Monday afternoons between 2-4pm in the IT room upstairs.

The Ark Advice Centre and Community Cafe, Wollaton Avenue, Gedling, on Tuesdays between 1-3pm

Beacon Baptist Church, Killisick, Arnold, between 2-4pm each Thursday.

Gedling borough residents warned over fake missed delivery card scam

Residents in Gedling borough are being warned about missing parcel delivery cards designed to look like they’re from Royal Mail, but are actually a scam. 

The fake cards lack the Royal Mail logo but look almost identical to the ‘something for you’ slips posted through letterboxes when a delivery can’t be made.

To organise a redelivery the cards urge recipients to call a 0208 number, which is not registered to Royal Mail. After ringing the number the automated message asks for your details and consignment number.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “The Royal Mail security team is looking into this incident as a matter of urgency. Customers should check delivery cards very carefully to ensure they are genuine, and remain vigilant.

“Although this card is similar to one of our Something For You cards, the Royal Mail logo is crucially missing”.

He added: “Customers should also consider whether they are expecting a delivery from the company named on the card.”

Action Fraud has urged all residents not to call the number provided if in doubt and to get in touch with the centre by using its online fraud reporting tool or calling 0300 123 2040.

Sadly, scam missed delivery card scams are nothing new.

Back in 2015, Action Fraud warned people about scam postcards that were being delivered to UK residents’ homes claiming that a parcel containing “jewellery” was waiting for the homeowner.

The personally-addressed postcards said: “The office is attempting to reach you. To claim this parcel and accept this offer, you must telephone the number below immediately and arrange for a delivery. The item is prepaid, but a processing and delivery free of £10 must be remitted. This fee can be paid only by telephone and only with a credit card (VISA or MasterCard). This is your only notification”

Plans revealed for 340 new homes in Bestwood

Plans to build 340 new homes on two sites in Bestwood have been revealed.

Nottingham City Homes (NCH) is proposing to build the homes on the former Padstow School site in xxxxx and on the Ridgeway playing field.

They say the development will be a mix of homes for sale, rent and social rent across both sites.

A spokesman for Nottingham City Homes said: “Nottingham City Homes is in the early stages of developing a master plan for the development of the former Padstow School site and the Ridgeway playing field

“There is a shortage of family housing in the city and only a limited amount of space available on which to build.

“NCH would build carefully designed, energy efficient, generously proportioned, exceptional quality homes for families to live and grow.”

The firm are now keen to get views from the local community about the proposals and have organised three drop-in sessions to share the plans and let people have their say.

The first session will take place on Tuesday, August 15 at Bestwood Estate Community Centre in Gainsford Crescent between 4pm and 6.45pm.

The second drop-in session will take place on Tuesday, August 22 at Bestwood Park Community Centre on Beckhampton Road between 4pm and 6.45pm.

The final session will take place on Saturday, September 30 at The Ridge in Ridgeway between 12-3pm.

Carlton Town mourn loss of talented youngster

A young talented footballer who tragically died last week has been described as “a loveable lad” who will “live on in the hearts” of staff and players at the club he played for.

18-year-old Brahima Ceesay was a member of Carlton Town’s Under-18 side and was also involved in the club’s academy. He had been playing for the Millers for the past three seasons.

His manager, John Kilcullen, described the teenager as a “loveable lad” with “silky [football] skills that made him a valuable member of the team”.

He told Carlton Town‘s website: “From my point as his manager and being a friend, its a tragedy to lose someone like Brahima. Myself and all his team mates feel this shock and hurt. Brahima will always live on in our hearts on and off the field.”

Carlton Town chairman, Mick Garton and Junior team chairman, Paul Whitby say they are now busy putting plans in place at the club to honour the youngster.

In a statement, they said: “We were sat together talking about the new season a few days ago when we heard this tragic news,

“We are so sorry to hear this. It is a real tragedy, especially with him being so young. Our thoughts are obviously with his family at this time.”

“It is important we do something to honour Brahima and it would be nice if we can raise some money for the family in the process as no one should have to worry about funeral costs when your children are so young.”

The club have announced plans to hold a memorial game on Sunday, September 24 at their ground on Stoke Lane to raise money for the family. Kick-off will be at 2pm.

The match will be between a Carlton Town XI and Brahima’s former side, managed by John Kilcullen.

The club are also asking for people to donate raffle prizes which will be held after the game to boost funds.

People attending the match will also be asked to make a donation into the collection buckets on the gate.

Gedling cops clear up confusion over quad bikers on the road

A local police team are reminding members of the public that not all quad bikes taking to the roads across the borough are illegal.

The reminder comes after complaints to officers about riders in the borough.

Police say they observed a rider recently in Netherfield, but although he was riding legally, members of the public were still appealing for officers to take action.

Now the Gedling South beat team are hoping to help people understand the rules about using quad bikes on our roads.

A spokesman for Gedling South Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Our appeal for information about illegal motorbikes and quad bikes has been very well received and I thank you all for the information given to us, however, not all quad bikes are illegal.

“We were driving along Victoria Road yesterday and a few cars in front was a quad bike, it had a number plate, the rider was not wearing a helmet and for the time we observed him he was riding it in a responsible manner. However, we were flagged down three times by people asking us ‘Aren’t you going to do anything about him'”

“I explained that not all quad bikes were illegal and that as long as they are registered with the DVLA, carry a MOT, Tax and Insurance then they are perfectly legal to be on the road.

He added: “Also riders of Quad bikes do not have to wear helmets.”

Tesco stores in Gedling borough to scrap sale of 5p carrier bags

Tesco stores in Gedling borough are to scrap selling 5p carrier bags later this month.

The single-use carrier bags are being replaced by a new Bag For Life – which costs 10p.

Single-use plastic bags will stop being sold in Tesco stores from August 28.

The UK’s biggest supermarket says they believe that removing single use carrier bags will significantly reduce the number of bags sold, and help cut litter and landfill.

Usage of single-use carrier bags has dropped by more than 85 per cent, according to government figures.

The new bag for life is made of 94 per cent recycled plastic and will be replaced for free, if damaged.

Customers who order their shopping online will still be able to opt for a single use carrier bag for their shopping or select a bagless delivery.

Travellers move onto Burton Road Jubilee Park

A group of travellers have moved onto Jubilee Park in Burton Road.

Caravans were first spotted at the site yesterday (August 6) by residents.

The latest sighting comes just days after a group were moved on from land in Colwick by Gedling Borough Council.

Gill Price is a regular user of the park and wants action taken.

The 42-year old from Carlton told Gedling Eye:”I just want them moved on before they make a mess.”

“Young kiddies and families use the park and it needs to be a safe, secure and a tidy place for people to visit.”

It’s not yet known if the group have been served with an eviction order.
