Walk-in burglars target homes of pensioners in Mapperley while they were out enjoying their gardens

Police in Gedling are urging people to be vigilant after two walk-in burglaries took place in Mapperley while victims were outside enjoying their gardens.

An elderly woman was gardening when suspects got into her home, off Westdale Lane, through an open door before ransacking rooms.

They left with jewellery and cash after being disturbed.

The distressing incident happened between midday and 1.30pm on Monday (June 7, 2021).

Police are also investigating another burglary in the same area which happened between 3.40pm and 4.40pm on June 1, 2021.

Another elderly victim was out in her garden and when she went back inside her home she realised her purse had been taken and items in her bedroom had been moved.

Inspector Chris Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We want people to enjoy the warmer weather in their gardens but we’re urging them to think about their home security before it’s too late. We don’t want anyone to fall victim to burglars.

“Tackling and reducing burglary is a priority for the force and we want to do everything we can to stop burglaries from happening in the first place.

“It’s important to consider whether you are leaving your home vulnerable to burglary.

“We can’t stress enough how important it is to make sure your front and back doors are kept locked, even when you’re in the house, and your windows are kept locked where possible to deter burglars.

“There are also steps people can take to remove the temptation for burglars by keeping possessions out of sight and making it seem like someone’s at home.

”Some simple crime prevention tips for your home include:

  • Make sure that all doors and windows are locked
  • Keep desirable items out of view to passers-by.
  • Valuables should not be visible from windows and doors in your home.
  • Ensure your keys are kept in a safe place out of sight and well away from your letterbox.
  • Don’t leave spare keys outside or in a garage or shed.
  • Never leave garages or sheds unlocked, especially if they connect to your property.

If you see somebody acting suspiciously report it to Nottinghamshire Police immediately by calling 101 or, in an emergency, call 999.

Four arrested as police continue clampdown on vehicle crime across Gedling borough

Police have made four arrests as they continue a clampdown on vehicle crime across Gedling borough.

Officers are also repeating their warning for motorists to review their security after the vehicles were targeted in Arnold and Colwick.

Following detailed CCTV enquiries by the Arnold Neighbourhood Policing Team, two suspects were quickly identified in relation to vehicles being broken into.

Two men, aged 37 and 45, were arrested on suspicion of theft from motor vehicles and fraud.

The arrests followed four recent incidents in Arnold where vehicles were targeted. Cash and tools were taken from two of the vehicles and a bank card was stolen from another and later used to buy goods from local petrol stations.

In three of these incidents the vehicles were left insecure.

Gedling Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Chris Pearson said: “As these arrests and charges show, we will not tolerate this type of offending in Gedling borough and we thoroughly investigate reports of vehicle crime.

“While our enquiries into recent thefts remain ongoing we’re also urging residents to be vigilant and make it as difficult as possible for criminals to target their vehicles. They should ensure they are locked and any valuables are removed or kept out of sight

“Where possible ensure that your vehicle is parked on your driveway or in your garage if you have one. Alternatively, ensure your vehicle is parked in a well-lit area.

Changes planned in Gedling as part of planned electoral boundary shake-up announced today

Big changes are planned in a shake-up of Gedling borough’s electoral boundaries.

The electoral boundaries determine what MP you can vote for and doesn’t impact who your local council is.

Gedling and surrounding areas are currently served by Conservative Tom Randall. Newstead, Linby, Lambley, Papplewick parts of Bestwood and Calverton are currently represented by Mark Spencer. Mapperley comes under Labour’s Nadia Whittome.

But Gedling borough’s electoral areas are set to be redrawn under the initial plans announced today by the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) – an independent public body that reviews constituencies.

But the public will now be allowed to have their say on new proposals and the impact they would have if they are put in place.

Tim Bowden, secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: “Today’s proposals mark the first time people get to see what the new map of Parliamentary constituencies might look like. But they are just the Commission’s initial thoughts. Help us draw the line to make the number of electors in each Parliamentary constituency more equal.

PICTURED: The current boundary map

“Each constituency we recommend is required by law to contain between 69,724 and 77,062 electors, meaning there will be significant change to current boundaries. We want to hear the views of the public to ensure that we get the new boundaries for Parliamentary constituencies right.”

How will Gedling and the boroughs be impacted under new proposals?

Gedling

Gedling would expand its boundary as part of the changes unveiled today.

The area would absorb Lambley, Woodborough and Bestwood St Albans

The current electorate for Gedling, which is represented by Tom Randall is 68,900 and that would increase to 75,795.

Sherwood

Sherwood would lose Lambley, Woodborough and Bestwood St Alban’s under the proposed changes.

Calverton would remain under Sherwood, although be closer to the Gedling border.

Sherwood would expand in size by gaining Lowdham, Gunthorpe, Epperstone and Thurgaton.

Nottingham East

Nadia Whittome’s constituency would grow by absorbing some of Nottingham city’s areas like the Lace Market and The Park.

Mapperley and Mapperley Park would remain part of the Nottingham East constituency.

The proposals can be viewed at bcereviews.org.uk

How do I have my say?

You have until August 2, 2021 to voice your opinions on the proposed boundaries. Maps and comment forms can be found here: https://www.bcereviews.org.uk/node/6483#

Inspector Chris Pearson’s latest update on policing activities across Gedling borough during May

Inspector Chris Pearson leads the Gedling Neighbourhood Policing team which helps crack crime across the borough.

Here’s his latest update on progress his team made in May…

Priority Updates

The policing priorities for the Gedling Borough continue to be residential burglary, anti-social behaviour and drug supply. Our local policing priorities are due to be refreshed at the end of June therefore I would encourage you to complete our Whatmatters Survey in order to help us in identifying our priorities. The Survey can be found on our website at www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/whatmatters

Drug Supply

It’s been another busy month with further activity around our priority of Drug Supply.

On 6th May the Operation Reacher team carried out a Warrant on Nether Pasture in Netherfield. The team seized quantities of Class A & B drugs along with designer clothing which is suspected to be counterfeit. We are now investigating with the assistance of colleagues from Trading Standards. The team worked together with another Operation Reacher team from the City who attended a second address with further drugs seizures made. As a result of the activity a 29 year old male and 31 year old female were arrested and enquiries are ongoing.

Over in Arnold in the Gedling North area a Warrant was carried out at a property on High Street, Arnold on the afternoon of 3rd June. The team recovered wraps of suspected class A drugs, mobile phones and cash as part of the investigation. Four arrests were made with three males and a female being arrested on suspicion of drug supply offences. They have now been released under investigation and further enquiries are ongoing.

So far the Operation Reacher team have carried out over 50 warrants across Gedling and the team have now seized over £260k in suspected criminal money. Alongside this 123 drugs seizures have been made and 210 people have been arrested or interviewed
as a result of an ongoing police investigation. As ever please let us know if you have any concerns around drug use or dealing as we will always look to take enforcement action where possible.

Burglary

In the last month there have been some great arrests in relation to burglary offences across Gedling.

Response officers from Jubilee House responded to a report of a burglary at a Hair Salon on Carlton Hill on the morning of Thursday 13th May. Two males attempted to smash their way into the premises before being stopped in a vehicle nearby. The males (aged 41 and 46) were arrested on suspicion of burglary and the investigation is very much ongoing. I know how difficult the last 12 months have been for all including small businesses so I’m pleased that we were able to make arrests in relation to this offence.

Alongside this detectives from the County burglary team investigated a Burglary on Furlong Street, Arnold on 15th May. An elderly lady disturbed the offender who pushed her out of the way before making off with a television and other items. Following a detailed investigation a 32-year-old male was charged with burglary and remanded in custody.

I also wanted to mention a burglary on Coppice Road, Arnold on 25th May when a French bulldog and her eight puppies were stolen from their home during the day. The offenders forced entry to the property before taking the puppies and their mother from the address. This is clearly unacceptable and we are doing all we can to find the puppies and to identify the offenders. I can only imagine how distressing this has been to the victims and their family.

To date the puppies and mother have not been found and I’d encourage anyone with information to contact us quoting Incident 348 of 25th May.

Dog theft has increased nationally and as a force we are supporting the ‘Protect your pooch’ campaign which offers useful advice around keeping pets safe, particularly when out in gardens. Further information can be found online at www.ourwatch.org.uk/protectyourpooch

Over in the Gedling South area two properties have been targeted by offenders with houses entered on Marshall Hill Drive and St Michaels Avenue, Gedling. On both occasions it appears that the offenders have found insecure doors or windows. With the
warmer weather now with us I’d encourage you to ensure that doors and windows are left locked and secure especially when out in gardens and overnight.

Anti-social behaviour

ASB continues to be a priority for Gedling teams and over the last four weeks we have continued to work closely with partners to tackle ASB issues across the Gedling Borough.

The Neighbourhood policing team have been carrying out joint patrols of hotspots with the Gedling Wardens and we are working together with housing providers to reduce ASB in residential dwellings.

The warmer weather has increased reported ASB in some open spaces such as local parks and shopping precincts. In the last few
weeks the Gedling Special Constables have carried out foot patrols on a Friday evening in some of our villages including Ravenshead and Calverton.

Alongside this the Specials have focused on reports of off-road bikes and other antisocial use of our roads. On 27th May a quad bike was seized by the team after it had been seen riding on pavements over in Carlton. The rider has been reported for
summons for a number of Road Traffic offences. This is clearly extremely dangerous and we will not hesitate to take further action where needed to prevent injury to a member of the public or the rider.

Fatal 5 operation

The Operation Reacher team were involved in the national week of action around Road Safety. On 17th May the team carried out a number of speed checks across Gedling and focused their activity on Southdale Road, Carlton where 6 x drivers were issued with
Traffic Offence Reports for excessive speed.

The team also visited Linby village where a further 4 x drivers were reported for Speeding offences on Wighay Road.

The team also seized a van which had no insurance and our Special Constables seized a further three vehicles which were being driven without the relevant insurance or tax to top off a successful operation.

Knife Crime

We were recently involved in the national knife crime week of action known as ‘Operation Sceptre’. This runs twice a year and is aimed at disrupting those believed to be carrying knives whilst also providing education as to the dangers of carrying and
using knives in our communities. I have always been very clear that this will be high on the agenda of the police and partners in Gedling.

Knives cost lives and we will continue to focus our attention on those who are believed to be carrying knives in order to bring them to justice.

During the week of action officers carried out searches in a number of our open spaces along with the neighbourhood wardens resulting in the seizure of a kitchen knife found hidden on Jubilee Park in Gedling. Alongside this, a member of the public located knives hidden in the brick yard estate and handed these in to officers for destruction.

A number of visits were made to those believed to be involved in knife crime and officers also delivered a knife crime input to around 130 young people who go to school within the Gedling Borough. Alongside this, two males were stop searched and a male
was also arrested on suspicion of being in possession of an offensive weapon following the discovery of a metal baseball bat hidden within a vehicle.

Autocrime

We have been investigating a series of Autocrime offences following a number of vehicles being targeted in the Arnold area.

On May 9 & 10 we received reports of 4 x vehicles being targeted in the area which included offences on;
Roxburgh Close, Arnold
Stuart Close, Arnold
Middlebeck Drive, Arnold
Meeks Road, Arnold

The offenders targeted insecure vehicles and stole bank cards, cash and tools. The neighbourhood policing team at Arnold started an investigation into the offences which included reviewing CCTV footage from the area. As a result of the enquiries carried out we were able to make two arrests in relation to the offences. Two males (aged 37 and 48 years) have been arrested on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle and Fraud offences. They remain on police bail.

Over in Colwick we also received a report of a van having been broken into with tools stolen. The neighbourhood policing team at Carlton started an investigation following the offence which happened overnight between 31st May and 1st June. Following our
investigation two males were detained in on 4th June. Both males (aged 37 and 48) were charged with receiving stolen goods and remanded in custody to appear at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Friday 5th June.

Specsavers shop to open inside new Sainsbury’s store off Colwick Loop Road later this year

Sainsbury’s has today shared more details about what shoppers can expect to see inside their new store off Colwick Loop Road when it opens later this year.

The UK shopping giant also revealed they expect the store to ‘open to customers in time for Christmas this year’.

They said multi-million pound investment in the community will provide an impressive selection of food and non-food products for local people, including Sainsbury’s popular Tu clothing range and Habitat home products.

The store also includes an Argos store inside the supermarket and customers are set to enjoy the convenience of a large car park plus a new Sainsbury’s petrol filling station.

Sainsbury’s has revealed it has also partnered with Specsavers, offering eyecare and audiology services in the convenient setting of the new supermarket.  Sainsbury’s said it ‘works with selected concession partners to provide customers with an even more convenient experience and give a locally curated and one-stop shop’.

Sainsbury’s property director Patrick Dunne said: “I’m very proud of the progress on site.

“Many people across our team have worked on this scheme for many years to ensure it best suits the needs of residents now and for future generations. It’s because of their hard work that we’re able to build a new flagship store today with the very best that Sainsbury’s has to offer.

We’re partnering with Specsavers to give our customers an even more convenient shopping destination and they can get everything they need under one roof.

We’re always striving to enhance our offer for our customers and I’m sure residents are excited to hear what we’re planning for them.”

Once complete, the new Sainsbury’s will create over 150 store jobs across a range of roles and levels. Further information on working in the new store including position descriptions will be available on the Sainsbury’s website (https://sainsburys.jobs/) when recruitment commences. People with a passion for food, a friendly personality and great attitude who are interested in working at Sainsbury’s will need to apply online when the roles go live. Retail experience isn’t necessary as all training will be provided for successful applicants.

The new supermarket will also play an active role in the local community and will be supporting Sainsbury’s nationwide community programmes. In January Sainsbury’s also announced an additional £1 million community fund for stores to donate to charities and other good causes in their local areas. This follows Sainsbury’s ‘Help Brighten a Million Christmases’ campaign that raised £6 million in December for over 800 local charity partners, Comic Relief and FareShare.

Former MEP Martin Daubney goes on live radio to praise two England stars for not taking the knee for BLM…but it was two ROMANIANS who refused to kneel

Former MEP and Gedling resident Martin Daubney has been left red-faced after appearing live on air as a football expert, discussing the hot topic of taking of the knee prior to international matches.

MailOnline reported today Daubney was invited to talk about Sunday’s night friendly match between the England national team and Romania, before which players took the knee and a chorus of boos rang out around the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough.

England wore their blue away kit for the fixture – which was their final practice match ahead of Euro 2020 – though this appeared to have thrown off Daubney, who went on to make a completely incorrect observation in saying that two Three Lions stars did not take the knee.

The day after the match Daubney tweeted that he would be appearing on radio to discuss his thoughts about the events, and wrote: ‘Join me on TalkRadio at 10.40am when I will be saying it’s time to end the divisive virtue signalling of taking the knee at football – we must axe it before Euro 2020 or it will majorly kick off.’

He then joined Mike Graham live on TalkRadio and went on to make his incorrect observation.

Daubney said on air: “Interestingly if you look last night at the Riverside Stadium, there were two England fans, two England players I beg your pardon, who didn’t take the knee.

“I wonder if any of your listeners know who those players are, I’d like to say well done to those lads, they are leading by example.’

Earlier, Daubney had tweeted his same view about two England players supposedly refusing to take the knee, and asked fans if they could help him name them.

As criticism and ridicule quickly poured in his direction, Daubney deleted the tweet yet the damage was already done.

One user quickly saw the opportunity to poke fun at Daubney’s error, responding with the Romanian translation for thank you.

‘When thanking those ‘England’ players for not taking the knee, remember to say mulutmesc.’

Another user comically mistook the identity of Romanian football legends Gheorghe Hagi and Florin Raducioiu on purpose, in order to give Daubney a taste of his own medicine.

He wrote: ‘I’d like to hear the opinions of former England players on this situation like Gheorghe Hagi and Florin Raducioiu.’

Many others simply piled in to question whether the former MEP even knew which match he was watching, or was aware that England do indeed occasionally play in other colours.

The taking of the knee is set to continue for the England team once Euro 2020 gets under way, after manager Gareth Southgate once again this week voiced his support of the gesture.

‘We weren’t prepared to take a backward step,’ said Southgate.

‘We feel that would be wrong and would be bowing to pressure from outside and we don’t think that’s appropriate.’

Anger as tree vandalised at Covid memorial wood on Carlton Hill

A £300 tree planted in Carlton as part of a memorial woodland to remember those who have died of Covid in Gedling borough has been vandalised.

The damaged tree was discovered today by members of the Carlton Hill Community Action Group, who have begun creating a memorial woodland at Carlton Hill Recreation Ground with Gedling Borough Council to remember local people lost during the pandemic.

The first trees and bulbs were planted on land set aside for the woodland last month. Signage, seating and memorial plaques will also be added once funds have been raised.

Val Green is a member of the group and said she was disgusted to find the tree damaged.

She told Gedling Eye: “This is one of the semi-mature memorial trees in the Gedling Borough Memorial Woodland.

The trees were planted to remember the people of Gedling Borough who we have lost due to Covid-19. To say we are disappointed is a huge understatement. Someone must know who did this.

“As a semi-mature tree it will now cost us around £300 to replace.”

The volunteers say police have been contacted about the damage.

People can still make donations towards funding the new woodlands at the fundraising site: https://www.peoplesfundraising.com/fundraising/MemorialWoodland

Post-pandemic commuters could save cash on rail fares from Gedling stations with new flexi tickets

Rail commuters in Gedling borough heading back into the office could save some cash with the launch of new flexible tickets aimed at workers splitting their time between home and the office.

The new tickets available from East Midlands Railway will allow travel on any eight days in a 28-day period between two named stations. They are being introduced as part of the Government’s sweeping reforms of the railway.

Gedling borough has four stations at Burton Joyce, Carlton Newstead and Netherfield which can take commuters to Crewe, Lincoln, Leicester, Nottingham and Skegness.

The eight days of travel doesn’t need to be specified in advance, giving part-time commuters more flexibility to travel when they want and need.

The Flexi Season ticket is priced between an Anytime Day Return and a 7 Day Season ticket, offering savings for commuters travelling during peak times, 2-3 days a week.

The new flexible tickets will be on sale from June 21.

Flexi Season tickets will be available on the EMR Smartcard. If you don’t have a Smartcard then East Midlands Railway warn commuters to allow plenty of time to get one before you travel – they can take up to 5 days to arrive by post.

The flexible system has been brought in as a result of a long-term decline in the use of traditional season tickets, plus an increase in homeworking due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “For many, the idea of travelling five days a week to the office is fast becoming a relic of the past.

“The future is flexible: passengers want a simple, stress-free option, and new flexible tickets make fares fairer.

“As we kickstart the biggest reform of our railways in a generation, we’re committed to creating a modern railway that works for its passengers.”
