Post-pandemic commuters could save cash on rail fares from Gedling stations with new flexi tickets

Rail commuters in Gedling borough heading back into the office could save some cash with the launch of new flexible tickets aimed at workers splitting their time between home and the office.

The new tickets available from East Midlands Railway will allow travel on any eight days in a 28-day period between two named stations. They are being introduced as part of the Government’s sweeping reforms of the railway.

Gedling borough has four stations at Burton Joyce, Carlton Newstead and Netherfield which can take commuters to Crewe, Lincoln, Leicester, Nottingham and Skegness.

The eight days of travel doesn’t need to be specified in advance, giving part-time commuters more flexibility to travel when they want and need.

The Flexi Season ticket is priced between an Anytime Day Return and a 7 Day Season ticket, offering savings for commuters travelling during peak times, 2-3 days a week.

The new flexible tickets will be on sale from June 21.

Flexi Season tickets will be available on the EMR Smartcard. If you don’t have a Smartcard then East Midlands Railway warn commuters to allow plenty of time to get one before you travel – they can take up to 5 days to arrive by post.

The flexible system has been brought in as a result of a long-term decline in the use of traditional season tickets, plus an increase in homeworking due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “For many, the idea of travelling five days a week to the office is fast becoming a relic of the past.

“The future is flexible: passengers want a simple, stress-free option, and new flexible tickets make fares fairer.
