Warning as people in borough continue to be targeted by WhatsApp hijack scam

Fraudsters are continuing to target WhatsApp users in Gedling borough and takeover their accounts by posing as a friend and asking for SMS security codes.

Although the scam has existed for years, people in Gedling borough are still being caught out and our readers are now warning others not to fall for the con.

WhatsApp has said users should never hand over their security codes to anybody, even if they appear to be a friend.

The scam works by exploiting the SMS text process used for setting up a new account or adding an existing WhatsApp account to a new phone.

If you receive an SMS text message with a six-digit WhatsApp code that you were not expecting, you could be a target for the scam.

In the next step, the scammer sends you a WhatsApp message asking for the six-digit code.

It appears to come from a genuine friend because that account has already been hijacked.

James Mills from Mapperley was one of many warning people not to fall for this.

“It’s embarrasing, he said.

“I fell for it despite reading the story warning others in Gedling Eye a few weeks ago.”

“I got a WhatsApp message from my friend Clayton not long after receiving an SMS text message with a WhatApp code I wasn’t expecting.

“The fake message from my friend claimed they’d been logged out of their account and had the SMS message sent to my phone by accident. They’d obviously already hacked his account.

“Stupidly, I sent it across and soon lost control of MY WhatsApp.”

Once scammers gain control, they then try to target others in your contacts list using the same scam. They also search messages for personal information.

They sometimes also message friends requesting money to a bank account due to a ‘crisis’.

WhatsApp warned users to be vigilant.

They said: “The safety and security of our users and their messages are really important to us. However, just like regular SMS or phone calls, it’s possible for other WhatsApp users who have your phone number to contact you.”

It said users should:

  • never give a password or SMS security code to anybody – not even friends or family
  • enable two-step verification for an extra layer of protection
  • be vigilant if you receive a message asking you for money. If in doubt, call your friend or family member to check

WhatsApp has a guide on its website to help people keep their accounts safe.

VIDEO: Work continues on new Gedling Access Road as completion date edges closer

The latest flyover video has been published by Nottinghamshire County Council and shows what progress has been made on the construction of the £40m Gedling Access Road during the past few weeks.

Work on the new roundabouts nears completion and work to join it up with Plains Road in Mapperley is also progressing well.

The new £40m relief road is set to open in the autumn.

The 3.8km single carriageway will link the A612 Trent Valley Road and Nottingham Road to Mapperley Plains – running parallel with the A6211 Arnold Lane.

It is being introduced to ease traffic issues through Gedling village and serve the new Chase Farm housing development.

The road continues to divide opinion, with some residents happy it will ease congestion in Gedling, while others say it has ruined nearby countryside.

Police seize drugs and cash during raid on Arnold home

Four people have been arrested following a police drugs raid in Arnold.

Gedling Operation Reacher officers carried out the drugs raid yesterday afternoon (June 4) and seized class A and B drugs.

Officers searched a house in the High Street and detained three men and a woman at the scene on suspicion of supplying drugs and possession of criminal property.

A quantity of cash has also been seized from the address.

Neighbourhood Inspector Chris Pearson said: “We carried out this search based on intelligence and information provided from members of the public and it has led to us discovering a quantity of suspected drugs which has now been taken out of circulation.

“We encourage people to continue to report information to us on 101, no matter how small, as it might just be the vital piece needed to carry out enforcement action.

“We continue our hard work to disrupt the drugs network in Nottinghamshire. Whether that’s by prosecuting drug dealers or supporting vulnerable people to break free from a particular lifestyle.

“Our message is clear, if you’re a drug dealer in Nottinghamshire, we will use every tactic available to us to locate, enforce and prosecute you.”

The men aged 32, 31 and 30 and a 24-year-old woman have since been released under investigation.

Nottinghamshire Police takes a proactive approach to combating suspected drug related crime and regularly carries out search warrants in response to community intelligence.

MP hails environmentally-friendly features of new Sainsbury’s store off Colwick Loop Road

Gedling MP Tom Randall has praised Sainsbury’s for incorporating a number of environmentally-friendly features into their new store being constructed near Colwick.

The MP was yesterday given a guided tour of the site and shown how work on the new store was progressing.

The new store is set to open in the autumn and will provide a fantastic range of Sainsbury’s own-brand and branded food ranges, alongside its popular clothing and general merchandise offer. The store will also include an Argos plus the new Sainsbury’s petrol filling station will conveniently be nearby.

The new store will also create 150 new jobs for people in the borough.

Mr Randall praised the supermarket giant for investing in the community.

He said: “It is great to see this £18,000,000 investment in Gedling, which will create 150 new local jobs. Recruitment for these jobs is scheduled to start at the end of July.

“The store is being constructed with environmentally friendly features, such as electric car charging points, water collection points in the roof which will feed the toilets with rain water, auto dimming heating, LED lights and sky lights in the roof to providing daylight and saving on lights. The new Sainsbury’s supermarket in Colwick is set to open in November.

Sainsbury’s Property Director, Patrick Dunne said: “Colwick has told us loud and clear that they want us to open our doors as soon as possible and we’re doing everything we can to do just that. We will continue to keep the community updated as we build this exciting new store, including how residents can apply to join the local colleague team.”

Petition launched to shut down hostel in Colwick

A petition has been launched by Colwick residents, aiming to shutdown Balmoral Road’s home for ex-prisoners.

The petition to Gedling Borough Council claims that a property in Balmoral Road, Colwick has brought criminal activity and drug use to the neighbourhood.

The property according to its owner East Midland Homes Co-operative provides supported living accommodation.

Concerned residents argue that because of the home they don’t feel safe in their own homes and that they have put up with the issue for long enough.

The post said: “The residents of Balmoral Road and the neighbourhood of Colwick, Netherfield and Carlton would like the shutdown of the hostel in Balmoral Road for use to house ex-convicts. 

“The last few years has seen weekly visits from blues; be it Police for anti-social behaviour, domestic violence and theft, or drug related ambulance call outs.”

The petition was clear that newly released prisoners need accommodation, but added: “Had there been harmonious social behaviours and integration then of course there would not be an issue but that is not the case.”

Police have attended several recent incidents reported by the area’s residents.

The petition is close to reaching the 200 signatures that it is aiming for.

Colwick ward councillor Meredith Lawrence has been working to resolve residents’ concerns about the property.

He said: “A meeting took place online on May 17 with myself, Gedling Borough Council, police, and representatives of East Midlands Homes Cooperative who run what they say is supported living accommodation.

“An action plan was formulated, and I have received the draft minutes today, but until all participants have agreed them, I can’t share them yet.

“I made it plain that residents have had enough of intermittent anti-social and criminal behaviour over the years, and it was time to stop it.”

Gedling Eye contacted Nottinghamshire Police for comment.

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for Gedling Chris Pearson said: “As the neighbourhood policing team, our officers will respond as appropriate whenever crime has been reported and wherever this takes place within Gedling borough.

“We have attended Balmoral Road for three incidents over the past month. These include reports of antisocial behaviour and loud music on the evening of 13 May. We also visited as part of enquiries into a stolen bike on 20 May and most recently officers responded to a heated argument on June 1.

“We would reassure residents that we continue to investigate such incidents and will respond quickly to such reports. We also continue with proactive patrols, where officers are out and about making sure they’re visible, engaging with the local community and getting their thoughts.

“This proactive approach and listening to residents is something we are committed to as a neighbourhood team and we would urge residents to share any concerns they may have in their area with us so that we can act upon these and tackle such issues as antisocial behaviour as efficiently as possible.”

East Midland Homes Co-operative did not wish to comment.

£800k to be spent preventing drug-related deaths in Notts

More than £800k of funding has been allocated towards preventing drugs related deaths and crime in Nottinghamshire. 

This is part of £80m of additional government funding for drug treatment which forms a portion of a £148m government funding package to help reduce crime in the UK. 

The money will enhance drug treatment schemes in Nottinghamshire that target people leaving prison who may be at risk of drugs-related crime. More than £350k will go to Framework’s Edwin House in Nottingham, which provides medical detoxification treatment for county and city residents. 

Nottinghamshire has a death rate from drug misuse of around 2.7 per 100,000 population. The national average in England is 4.7 per 100,000 population.

Nottinghamshire County Council is responsible for commissioning Change Grow Live, a national charity whose aim is to improve the lives and outcomes of people who struggle with substance misuse.

The additional funding of £810,472 will be split between:

£549,000 for a ‘universal’ allocation: to reduce drug-related deaths and improve access for people within the criminal justice system. Working with Change Grow Live to proactively engage people who are leaving prison and those within police custody and individually tailoring packages of treatment to their needs.

£358,531 for medically managed interventions: for inpatient detoxification unit at Framework’s Edwin House. This is part of a consortium bid with Nottingham City Council for the benefit of people living in the county and city.

Councillor Boyd Elliott, the Chair of Adult Social Care and Public Health Committee, said: “Drugs misuse destroys lives. This money will make a huge difference to the lives of those who need the treatments and in turn will benefit the community through a reduction in associated crime rates. 

“Although the Nottinghamshire rate of drug-related deaths is lower than the national average, we still need to bring this down further by commissioning providers like Change Grow Live to assertively work with people coming out of prison and supporting them with substance misuse treatment.

“This is a new approach and we will be working with criminal justice agencies such as Nottinghamshire Police and the Probation Service to identify people who may need support. By being proactive and supporting people coming out of prison and into the community, we hope this will in turn have a positive impact on reducing local crime figures.”

Gedling residents will soon be invited to have their say on a new political map for the borough.

The Independent Boundary Commission for England will shortly be accepting comments from the public as it decides on new nationwide constituency boundaries.

The alterations will be implemented in 2023 ahead of the next scheduled general election in 2024.

A previous review in 2017 suggested the redrawing of the Parliamentary boundary for Gedling.

Under these plans, the incumbent Conservative, Tom Randall MP’s current constituency would be disbanded, with Carlton and Netherfield being absorbed by the larger areas of Carlton and Nottingham East.

This was not implemented, but this year’s discussions could see these alterations back on the table.

After the release of maps – as part of nine regional reviews – of newly proposed changes at midnight on June 8, the public will be able to submit their thoughts to the commission at www.bcereviews.org.uk until 2 August.

Public hearings will also be conducted.

A second consultation will then be conducted from Spring 2022, proposals being revised in the Autumn of that same year.

The commission states that the views of electors resulted in 50% of initial proposals being altered in 2018. 

The Secretary of the Commission, Tim Bowden, told the Gedling Eye that the review hopes to “reflect more up to date communities” nationwide as “communities have changed” since the last review.  

He also hopes that the public will ‘say if we’ve got the boundaries right’ as the commission aims to ensure that all constituencies have “roughly the same number” of voters.

The committee hopes that measures will make sure each area has “equalised” elector numbers between approximately 69,000 and 77,000.

The number of MPs – currently 650 – will stay the same.

People across Gedling borough are still being targeted by a Census scam despite the deadline for submissions being back in March.

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) continues to receive evidence of a scam using Census deadlines as a means to steal financial details. 

The text messages, which have been seen in Gedling borough, claim to be from official sources, allege that the recipient placed invalid information, missed a question in their Census return, or that the Census has not been returned before the deadline.

They then also claim that if the correct information is not applied, the recipient will be fined a specific amount ranging from £200 to £1,000.

The messages end with a link to a bogus Census website that requests personal details, which puts the recipient’s finances at risk.

CTSI lead officer, Katherine Hart, said: “Unscrupulous fraudsters continue to target the public through text messages claiming to be from the UK Government and its agencies. Many similar scam texts are sent to the public, but this scam concerns me because the Census only comes around every ten years.

“Compared to regular activities such as banking or council tax payments, the public’s unfamiliarity with it could make the Census-themed scam more dangerous than others.

“Never tap on the links these texts contain and forward any scam texts to 7726, a free reporting service run by Ofcom. The public should forward these texts to the authorities as this allows us to build a full picture of the scale of this problem.”

Goals from James Matthews and Joel Daft either side of a Tyker Blake brace saw Carlton Town beat a World Game Changers XI 4-3 in an entertaining charity game played in front of a packed Bill Stokeld stadium.

Managers Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey named a strong Carlton Town side featuring recent signings Matthews and Nat Watson and Matthews opened the scoring on 24 minutes from the penalty spot after he himself was fouled.

Blake made it 2-0 three minutes later, lobbing goalkeeper Luke Browne after a fine through ball by Watson.  And just before half time Blake extended Carlton’s lead, rounding Browne and tapping into an empty net.

In scorching heat each half was 30 minutes and the visitors, who featured Colin Barrett, John Thompson, Andy Reid, Chris Freestone and Forest Ladies stars Lyndsey Harkin and Jemma Iommi amongst others, looked to rally in the second period.

However it was Daft who put the home side 4-0 ahead on 46 minutes with a delightful strike into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Iommi pulled one back from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining with an audacious paneca past Jack Steggles.  Steggles was then “sent-off” and replaced by Phil Jennings from the Carlton coaching staff.

Iommi then set herself up with a  lovely touch but could only fire wide before Freestone pulled a second goal back, firing home from a corner.

With virtually the last kick of the game Iommi scored again in what was a fine way to end the truncated season at Stoke Lane.
