MATCH REPORT: Gedling Miners Welfare FC 0 – 4 Clipstone FC

UCL Divison 1

February 7, 2023

Cobras’ sink Gedling in first of double header.

The Miners were coming into this game after a solid victory at West Bridgford last week and started brightly in the early phases of this match.

The first noticeable chance came on 13 minutes, Greg Tempest whipped in a superb corner which somehow evaded everyone in the area and the visitors cleared.

However, on 20 minutes the hosts were given a great chance to take the lead, Jack Jepson raced into the area before he was bundled over and the ref pointed to the spot much to the disagreement of the Clipstone faithful, but Josh Thornton’s penalty was saved by Charlie Dando.

This save was vital as just 30 seconds later Clipstone took the lead, a quick break saw Gedling outnumbered and Will Heather slotted the ball past the onrushing Louis Richardson from 12 yards.

On 35 minutes the visitors extended their lead, a ball down the left caught Cameron Thurgood out and Ryan Ingram cut inside and smashed his effort into the top right corner from 8 yards out.

Gedling did not let their heads drop and on 38 minutes they should have got back into the game, Ruben Wiggins-Thomas slipped in Tyrell Shannon-Lewis down the left and his cutback was fired over by Jepson from 10 yards out.

On 41 minutes the cobras struck a 3rd, A clever corner saw the ball be dummied twice and the ball was slotted under Richardson from Tim Gregory from 6 yards out.

With the last action of the half the visitors should have gone 4 up, A cross found the unmarked Philip Buxton who hit a powerful effort from 6 yards which was brilliantly tipped over by Richardson.

Clipstone, who sit just outside the play offs put the game to bed just 3 minutes after the interval, Another long ball saw Ingram burst past Thurgood and his low cross was tapped in by Gregory for his 2nd of the game and to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.

The 2nd half was very uneventful with neither side really threatening and Gedling’s night got worse on 90 minutes. Debutant Nathan Kelly was shown a straight red card for smashing the ball into the face of a Clipstone player.

In the second minute of injury time the visitors were also reduced to 10 men, Eden Homer was given his marching orders for a late challenge on Semilore Kassim but the visitors ran out victorious and we play them again on Saturday with a big response needed.

Gedling Team – Louis Richardson, Cameron Thurgood (Nathan Kelly 56’), Ross McCaughey, Takunda Mushambi (Kyme Mason 74’), Josh Thornton (C), Josh Stevenson, Kieran Harrison (Exauce Nsiala 85’) Greg Tempest (Fenn Davies 85’), Tyrell Shannon-Lewis (Semilore Kassim 78’), Ruben Wiggins-Thomas, Jack Jepson.

Match Report: Carlton Town 2 – 4 Brighouse Town

NPL First Division East

7 February 2023

Carlton Town’s miserable home form continued as they were beaten 4-2 by Brighouse Town at Stoke Lane.

The Millers came into the game on the back of two excellent away wins at Mansfield Town and Tadcaster Albion.  They knew a win would more than likely take them out of the relegation zone, as indeed it would have, but they were second best throughout and the defeat meant they lost for a ninth time in 13 home games.  Whilst they may take a little comfort in the fact that they scored twice late in the game and for a short spell looked like they might get back into it, in truth they were a long way short of Brighouse and produced a display fitting with their league position.

Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey made one change to the side which had beaten Tadcaster, with Richard Stainsby replacing the injured Mikey Emery in goal.

Aaron O’Connor had the first chance of the game on eight minutes but that came to nothing.

In a match in which it was vital for Carlton to keep it tight at the back, given they had shipped four goals in the away fixture to these opponents, it was a blow to go a goal down just a minute later.  A deep cross from Nathaniel Crofts on the left found Mohammed Qasim completely unmarked in the penalty area after Niall Hylton had missed the ball trying to head it clear.  Qasim took full advantage rifling into the roof of the net.

Carlton tried to respond and Khyle Sargent did well to win the ball in midfield and run forward before playing the ball to Alex Howes on the left.  He played the ball into the path of Kyle Tomlin but Tomlin couldn’t reach it on the soft surface and the chance was gone.

Howes then took a quick free kick to send Tomlin away on the right.  His cross was met by Dean Freeman in the area but his shot was deflected over the bar by Aiden Walker.

Another half chance was created when O’Connor, Niall Davie and Tomlin combined but Brighouse cleared comfortably.  Shortly afterwards Howes hit an effort just wide of goal after some more good work from Sargent.

In the opening minute of the second half Jack Boyle ran clear of the Carlton defence after a simple lofted pass from the back but his attempted lob drew a superb save from Stainsby.

Carlton attacked through O’Connor on the left.  He played the ball into Davie whose shot was blocked.  The rebound fell to Howes and he fired towards the corner of the net only to see Brett Souter make an excellent save of his own.

Brighouse went straight on the counter attack and doubled their lead with the softest of goals.  A deep cross from the right should have been caught by Stainsby, but instead he elected to punch under no pressure.  The ball rebounded off Davie into the path of Crofts who gleefully converted into a gaping goal.

Nine minutes later matters got worse as Carlton went three behind when Jack Boyle hit a free kick into the corner of the net with minimal resistance from the defensive wall.

That prompted a triple substitution for Carlton and one of the those substitutes, Brad Wells, gave the Millers a glimmer of hope when he volleyed home an O’Connor cross that had been flicked on by another substitute Tyler Blake just minutes after coming on.

Mohammed Ibrahim was then sent off with 20 minutes remaining for a dangerous tackle on Tyler Blake just outside the area.  Davie put the resultant free kick over the bar.

Davie then played a lovely ball into the path of O’Connor whose shot drew another excellent save from Souter.  A goal then may have made a real game of it, but instead Brighouse sealed the win with 12 minutes remaining.  Walker picked up a loose pass from Kyle Dixon, ran 50 yards without a challenge and then played the ball left to Crofts.  He cut inside and beat Stainsby at his near post.

There was still time for Davie to score Carlton’s second when he reacted quickest to a Wells free kick that had been blocked, and Wells himself may have scored again in added time when he lifted a shot just over, but there was no escaping the fact that Brighouse had been quicker and sharper all evening.  Carlton know they quickly have to improve at home and have to stop conceding such dreadful goals.

Carlton Town: R Stainsby, L Gorman, N Hylton,  D Brown,  D Freeman, J Holmes (K Dixon 59), A Howes (T Blake 59), K Sargent, N Davie, A O’Connor, N Davie, K Tomlin (B Wells 59). Unused substitutes: P Fountain, J White

Goals: B Wells 67, N Davie 84; Mohammad Qasim 9, Nathaniel Crofts 49, 78, Jack Boyle 58

Volunteers at the foodbank in Arnold say demand for help has never been higher

Helen Lloyd, manager of Arnold Foodbank told Gedling Eye: “The cost of living crisis is impacting all members of our society.

“People who, just a few months ago, would have been regularly given to us through supermarket collection points are now heartbroken to find themselves on the receiving end.

“We’re having to top-up our food stock more, especially with some of the more expensive items such as tinned meat, tuna and coffee.

“We’re so grateful to all those who give to us either financially, directly or through collection points, but the need is continuous and unrelenting at the moment as fuel bills continue to mount,”

Wetherspoons hike price of beer and food by 7.5%

Popular pub chain Wetherspoons has hiked the price of booze and food by 7.5% in a move that will see the cost of some pints increase by up to 29p.

The company has also put up the prices of meal deals by up to 75p.

The chain has pubs in Arnold, Carlton and Mapperley.

Propel Hospitality reports that the new changes means the cost of a pint of Carlsberg has risen from £2.39 to £2.57, a pint of Stella has gone from £3.35 to £3.60 and a Leffe has risen from £3.85 to £4.14. A pint of Corona is now £3.71 instead of £3.45 and a pint of San Miguel has risen by 26p to £3.71.

At the start of the year Wetherspoons did warn that prices could climb to help battle the rising food and energy costs.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon told The Sun: “Wetherspoon has increased prices on food and drink by 7.5%.

We believe that our prices are still very competitive in all the locations that we trade, even after the increase. Most businesses in the hospitality industry have had to deal with big price increases in the past year or two. We have tried to keep our prices competitive, bearing in mind that customers have suffered from inflation too.

He added: “The 7.5% increase is less than the rate of inflation.”

Nottinghamshire County Council leader Ben Bradley expected to make East Midlands Mayor decision this autumn

Nottinghamshire County Council leader Ben Bradley has revealed he will likely make a decision in the autumn over whether to run to become the East Midlands’ first elected mayor.

Councillor Bradley (Con) has long been linked with the role after pushing to get the £1.14bn devolution deal over the line.

However, he has repeatedly refused to say outright whether he will run for the position despite describing it as a “really exciting role”.

Devolution
PICTURED: The four council leaders with Secretary of State Greg Clark (centre

Now he has revealed a decision is expected to be made later this year on whether to contest the position ahead of the May 2024 poll.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service on Wednesday (February 8), Cllr Bradley said: “Those are decisions I’ll probably have to look at and take this autumn, which is when the selection processes will take place.

“That’s still a long way away, and lord knows where we will be.”

It comes after the devolution deal was signed by council leaders and the Government last August.

It will bring new powers and funding to the region alongside a new combined authority to govern Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Derbyshire.

Policy areas due to receive cash include education and skills, health, transport, planning and economic development, with at least £38m per year for 30 years to be handed to local leaders from Whitehall.

The deal depends on the passing of the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill – the national legislation needed for the devolution agreement to come into effect.

The bill is currently being debated by the House of Lords and is expected to be given royal assent to become law later this year.

This will allow the region’s combined authority to be created through a behind-the-scenes committee before the authority is then set up in ‘shadow’ form.

Staff can then be hired to work in the authority, with plans in place to create strategies and policies for the new mayor ahead of their May 2024 election.

Speaking on progress with devolution, Cllr Bradley added: “There will be a very specific ‘statutory instrument’ committee behind the scenes [in Westminster].

“This will pull together the legislation needed to create our specific combined authority.

“We expect by the autumn that this will be sorted and the combined authority will exist as an organisation, starting to recruit senior staff.

“The plan is still a May 2024 election and we will have a nine-month period where the combined authority exists in shadow form.

“It will start to draw up strategies and policies so that, when the mayor is elected, on day one they have got things to get on with.”

The combined authority will include representatives from the city and county councils as well as industry leaders in areas like transport or education.

It will also have four ‘non-constituent’ seats for the district and borough councils – split equally between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire authorities.

The elected mayor will then have oversight and control over the combined authority and will be able to set their own budget.

Cllr David Mellen (Lab), leader of Nottingham City Council, previously said the region has been left behind for “too long” and welcomed progress with devolution.

Commenting in December, he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “As the leader of Nottingham City Council, I’m interested in what we can get for the people of Nottingham and the region.

“Yes it’s not perfect, yes we’d like more money but we’re out of that stream for more money altogether at the moment so let’s get into that stream.”

Holidaymakers warned of 10-week wait for new passports

Holidaymakers in Gedling borough are being warned to allow 10 weeks for new passports if they are planning to travel abroad this summer.

The Home Office is said to be planning to keep the 10-week deadline introduced during the pandemic in place due to an “elevated” and “volatile” demand for travel documents.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Home Secretary Suella Braverman reportedly told MPs: “We expect elevated demand for passports throughout the year – and demand can be volatile – so customers should continue to allow 10 weeks. I urge people to apply in good time and not at the last minute.”

News of the extended lengthy waiting period for passports has come amid the first time in five years that the price of British passports have risen.

As of last Thursday, (February 2), the cost of applying for a new British passport online rose from £75.50 to £82.50 for adults, and £49 to £53.50 for children.

Postal applications for passports will increase from £85 to £93 for adults and £58.50 to £64 for children.

The UK Government’s web page states the increase in price will “help enable the Government to continue improving its services” and said that it “does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications”.

Recent figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats by submitting parliamentary questions which were shared with the Telegraph said the number of passports lost by the Home Office was at a five-year high.

The Lib Dem MP for Bath, Wera Hobhouse, told the paper: “These are new heights of incompetence for the Home Office. British travellers who urgently need new passports are being left high and dry by these endless delays.

“The Home Office needs to step up and take decisive action before more people are let down and lose confidence in these services.”

The Home Office added that the proposals are subject to parliamentary scrutiny.
