Online fitness instructor piles on the pounds for charity

An online fitness instructor has been helping people shed pounds in more ways than one across Gedling borough and the surrounding areas.

Lorna Marie Fitness and her clients, many of whom are from Gedling borough have raised a massive £3200 for charities in the last six months alone while at the same time getting fit and losing lbs.

Lorna said “we’re continuing to do what we can to support local charities in our area. It feels really good to give back.”

The amazing list of fundraising activities that Lorna and her husband Will have carried out include raising £1946 for The Richard Whitehead Foundation.

Lorna said “We held a Pilates and Prosecco event where Richard (Whitehead MBE) came to talk to everyone at the end, telling them all about the charity’s current projects and we did a 2 hour online workout-a-thon with ‘Tech Will’ – my husband who does the tech for the business”

Richard Whitehead MBE said “you’ve raised an incredible amount… it’s not only going towards people less fortunate than ourselves but also going towards making communities more inclusive. I’d like to thank you all for your support”

Paul, a Project Manager with The Richard Whitehead Foundation said “Thank you so much and what an amazing amount of money raised! ”

At Christmas Lorna and the fundraisers collected over 300kg of food donations for both the Arnold Foodbank and The Meadows Foodbank. Lorna said “the local Scouts got involved helping us package it all together! It was such a wonderful event!”

A spokesperson from Arnold Foodbank said:

“A massive thank you to Lorna Marie, Will, and the Lowdham community, who came together on 16 December 2022 to collect food for Arnold Foodbank. Their amazing fundraiser left us in awe. Also, a big shout out to the Lowdham Scouts for helping to bag up the donations.

“The following Monday, 19 December, our lovely volunteer, Peter collected 56 bags of food for families in Lowdham who were finding things tough over the festive period.

“We are so grateful to all our community who donate their time and fuel to fundraise and deliver within our community. You are essential to our operations and we’re so thankful for all you do.”

Other fundraising events have included a 10,000 step workout for MIND raising £784, a Zumba-thon online for Breast Cancer that raised over £800 and £700 was raised for ‘Stand With Ukraine’ by doing a 2 hour workout-a-thon.

Lorna said “It’s been a team effort, with everyone coming together to make a real difference in our community.  We’re currently starting fundraising for the Newark Children’s Bereavement Centre and are walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks for them in June to help raise funds and although this is in June we’re currently at over £470 in donations and growing.

“It would mean the world to us to inspire others to get involved.”

Sainsbury’s launches ‘pocket-friendly prices’ in Gedling borough convenience stores

Sainsbury’s has this week unveiled a new ‘Pocket Friendly Prices’ value campaign, rolling out across its Local stores – including those in Gedling borough.

The chain has local stores in Calverton, Gedling and on Mapperley Plains.

The offering at their convenience stores will provide lower prices on household essentials such as own-brand chicken breast fillets, butter and baked beans.

A Sainbury’s spokesman told Grocery Gazette “We’re committed to doing everything we can to support customers with the rising cost of living

“Our Pocket Friendly Prices highlight low prices on everyday essentials in our convenience stores.”

This latest move comes after supermarkets enhanced their loyalty schemes, with Sainsbury’s launching Nectar Prices earlier this month, as it looks to compete with Tesco’s Clubcard scheme.

The Co-op recently followed suit in introducing cheaper prices exclusively for members of its loyalty programme, Co-op Membership, claiming it could save shoppers as much as £300 per year.

New report reveals where new school places could be needed across Gedling borough

Nottinghamshire County Council has outlined where and how it could create new school places in Gedling borough.

The Conservative-led authority says it has been allocated £38.36 million from the Government to cover Nottinghamshire for its ‘Basic Need’ funding cash in 2023/24.

This is money allocated to councils to ensure schools have the capacity for the number of places required in their areas.

It can be used on capital projects like expansions or new school builds if demand is high.

Ongoing projects include the expansion of Carlton le Willows Academy

Now papers have revealed where further cash could be spent to tackle other localised gaps or demand across the borough.

Calverton is one area being targeted despite a projected surplus of 10 primary school places by the 2026/27 academic year.

The authority says its departments believe this surplus is “below a sensible operating margin” and it will fund an extra 40 places in the village.

This, it says, can be funded through contributions from property developers and could be accommodated at Sir John Sherbrook Junior School.

Feasibility studies will be drawn up to work out whether this may be possible in the future.

For secondary school places, further expansion plans have been suggested in Carlton.

Carlton le Willows Academy is currently being expanded by 400 spaces but the authority says the Gedling town needs further capacity.

It plans to use the Basic Needs funding to increase pupil admission numbers at Carlton Academy, a separate school, from 230 to 270 pupils.

This could eventually bring an additional 200 places for pupils in years seven to 11.

The expansion plans were presented to two cabinet members during a delegated decision on Monday, April 17.

In a report, Peter McConnochie, the council’s service director for education, said further documents will be drawn up if feasibility studies find any of the projects can be delivered.

These will outline how much any of the projects would cost.

Parents across Nottinghamshire received letters this week outlining whether their child will be going to their preferred primary school of choice.

The council confirmed 96.3 per cent of Nottinghamshire children were offered their parents’ first choice school, or 7,767 out of 8,062.

Overall, 99.6 per cent of pupils will go to one of their parents’ preferred schools.

The authority says those who are happy with their allocated school have until Monday, May 1 to accept the offer.

Sensory stay and play baby group launches on Carlton Hill

A local mum has launched a new sensory stay and play baby group on Carlton Hill.

Simply Sensory has been set up by Jemma Atkin in the downstairs studio of existing business Simply Dance at 376 Carlton Hill, where Jemma’s daughter has been dancing for over a year.

This is very much a passion project for Jemma and she now describes herself as part of the ‘Simply Dance family’

Jemma lives locally and told Gedling Eye that “I have been in Carlton for four years and love it! The variety of shops we have here and the fact that there are so many are small businesses is just brilliant. We love being part of this community.

“I’m a mum of 2 and I’ve taken a keen interest in how baby sensory and baby play benefits children since I had my 1st and want to pass this knowledge on to other parents. I’m passionate about helping people to re-create what we do at home and want to create a real community feel to my classes.

“I definitely felt like sometimes I’d have liked to come to a session in a safe space where my little one could learn and play and I could enjoy a hot cuppa and a biscuit with other mums and dads! Our plan is to offer SEN sessions too and this is something we’re looking at adding ASAP!”

Jemma explained that a sensory stay and play group is different to a baby class: it is not instructor-led and is designed as free play.

The parents/carers are free to follow their babies and toddlers lead on the activity they wish to do. This means the parents/carers can chat with others and share their experiences with tea, coffee and biscuits available.

She added that the benefits of sensory play include (but are not limited to):

  • Stimulate proprioceptive and vestibular senses
  • Develop/improve fine motor skills
  • It helps to build nerve connections in the brain
  • Supports language development
  • Improving social skills such as communication and co-operation

The set up at Simply Sensory includes stations set up every session that include: musical instruments, general play toys, reading snug in a teepee and a play kitchen.

In addition to this, each session is themed so the books provided are based on that theme and there is also a station each week dedicated to that theme. This is usually a tuff tray filled with themed activities.

Finally, there is a sensory light corner which, when the lights are turned off create a really calming and sensory space.

Jemma said “The sessions aren’t instructor-led but I’m on hand throughout to discuss how parents can recreate baby sensory at home.

“As a mum of 2, I’ve found some baby groups intimidating and want to create a community of parents and carers here where everyone feels included. We’ve also made our pricing as inclusive as possible at £7.50 pay-as-you-go or an unlimited access membership for £28 per month.

“We want to make these sessions accessible to all and have priced our sessions accordingly, all babies and parents deserve to come to a class where they feel welcome, can benefit from social interaction for them both and not be made to feel like they don’t belong”

Jemma can be contacted by email to jemma.atkin@outlook.com, by phone on 07803 428571 or online via https://www.simplydancenottingham.co.uk/ .

Woman tried to ‘pull child from mum’s arms’ in Gedling

Police are appealing for any information after a woman tried to pull a two-year-old boy from his mum’s arm in Gedling.

The incident happened at around 5.55pm on Wednesday (19) in Arnold Lane towards the junction with Friday Lane.

A mum had one child in a pushchair and another in her arm when an unknown woman approached her muttering under her breath.

She then tugged at the two-year-old in his mum’s arm and has been challenged.

The suspect has then run away in the direction of the mini roundabout and Main Street.

She has been described as a white female, aged 50 to 60, small, skinny build, wearing a blue face mask, a pink puffer coat with the hood up and dark blue jeans

Police were called and officers have made a number of lines of inquiry to track the suspect down including a CCTV trawl, forensics and door-to-door inquiries.

Police make appeal after three-car collision in Papplewick that left two women in hospital

Police are appealing for witnesses and any dash cam footage after a serious collision near Papplewick on April 7.

The incident happened on the A60 on Mansfield Road at around 2.55pm.

Police attended a three-car collision where two women in one of the cars were treated for serious injuries in hospital. They are now recovering.

Occupants of the other two vehicles were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Detective Constable Liah Lane, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a serious incident and we are currently working to understand what happened.

“We would really like to hear from anyone in the area or on that road before or after the incident occurred. We would especially like to hear from anyone who saw a red Audi or has any dash cam footage.

“Any witnesses who are yet to come forward are asked to call 101 quoting incident 471 of 7 April 2023.”

Meet the Mapperley man running the London Marathon and raising charity cash

A Mapperley man is preparing to tackle the London Marathon to raise cash for a special cause.

James Billington, 43, will take part in the iconic run for Ella’s charity on Sunday (23).

He will join more than 40,000 other runners in the Capital to raise money for his chosen charity, which works with women who’ve survived trafficking and exploitation.

James is married to Sam and works for Nottingham-based company SDL Surveying and this will be his fifth marathon.

James said: “I started running in 2006, when I joined a gym and lost 10 stone in weight – and I kept on running.

“If you’d have told me back then that I’d go on to run five marathons, I wouldn’t have believed you!’

“I first heard about Ella’s at a work conference. It was about surveying and property, and Ella’s were there talking about the safe houses they run, and I felt really inspired by the stories.

“It’s been great running for a small charity, where I know the money I raise will make a big difference among some of the UK’s most vulnerable women.’

‘People have very much gotten behind me during my training and fundraising efforts. My employer,

“SDL Surveying will double whatever I raise, which is great.”

James’ family are also supporting his charity challenge.

“My dad says he’ll donate an extra £50 if I get a PB on the day,” he said.

James has raised £800 so far. His total will be doubled by his workplace after the race, meaning he’s on track to raise more than £1,500 for Ella’s.

Emily Chalke, Co-Director at Ella’s, says the team at Ella’s are extremely grateful for James’ support.

She said: “The support we provide at Ella’s is crucial for women who’ve survived trafficking and other forms of violence. Without it, many would fall back into danger.

“The fundraising efforts of people like James play a significant part in making our work possible, so we are very thankful. We’ll be there cheering for him on the day!’

Co-op cuts prices for members to rival discount schemes offered by Sainsbury’s and Tesco

Co-op has revealed it plans to cut prices for customers who are ‘members’ in a move which rivals Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

The supermarket group say they plan to invest more than £240 million into its membership scheme.

The fresh funding will be used to introduce new and lower prices which will only be available to Co-op members.

Co op bags for life

The group estimates it could help them to save up to £300 a year.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of Sainsbury’s launching Nectar Prices offers that are only available to its Nectar loyalty scheme members, similar to rival Tesco’s Clubcard Prices offer.

Co-op said members will initially see benefits across food, such as £1.90 savings for ready meals, wine deals to help save £5 and money off Co-op’s British BBQ lines and fresh fruit ranges.

They will also get extra money off its popular freezer filler deal – with an average member saving of £8 per deal and discounts of £1.45 on its Irresistible pizzas.

Co-op’s lunchtime meal deals will also be available to members for £3.50, rather than £4.

Chief membership and customer officer at Co-op, Kenyatte Nelson, said the membership prices push “ensures that we’re rewarding the loyalty of shoppers with the most competitive prices on the best offers we have in our stores”.

The news comes after Sainsbury’s last week announced plans to take on Tesco’s Clubcard scheme by offering discounts on 300 products to Nectar loyalty card holders.

‘Nectar Prices’ has been introduced to rival perks offered by the supermarket’s competitors.

The price of a 200g jar of Nescafe Gold Blend is being cut by more than half for Nectar holders, from £8.10 to £4.

Heinz Baked Beans will now cost Nectar members 95p instead of £1.40.

The changes bring the Nectar scheme closer to those offered by Tesco with their Clubcard scheme. It offers lower prices on products across the store for those who have the card or app.

The event will also be broadcast at the council’s Richard Herrod Centre, Carlton. No booking is required for the event at the Richard Herrod Centre and the venue will be open from 8:15am.

Bothe venues are run by Gedling Borough Council.

The Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Peter Barnes said: “We are thrilled to take part in the King’s Coronation celebrations and be able offer this opportunity for our residents to come together on this historic occasion.

“I can remember the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and what a special time that was for the whole of the country. I have no doubt that the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort will be just as memorable.

“Seats at the Bonington will be limited so I’d recommend booking a place as soon as possible to avoid missing out.”
