Match Report: Paviors RFC 54 – 12 Sutton Coldfield

Midlands 2 North – October 21

This weekend Arnold‘s Pavs welcomed Sutton Coldfield RFC to The Stump in round seven of the current Midlands 2 North competition.

Many seemed nonplussed that the game was still on given the national and local deluges of the last few days, this being testimony to the fantastic work done by the team at Howard Marshall Engineering in bringing the pitches up to a high standard over the off season.

The game also was a celebration for Pavs stalwart Steve Allen who was making his 300th first team appearance in the green and red – a great player as well as a great bloke who extols all of the values of community rugby in its purest form.

Pavs got off to a bright and busy start with Phil Eggleshaw touching down and George Billam adding the extras to give the home side the lead at 7-0 on ten minutes.

Eight minutes later hooker Owen Taylor completed a powerful forward drive to advance Pavs lead to 12-0.

Sutton Coldfield then came into the game and scored via a number of well executed rucks to narrow the lead to 12-5 on thirty five minutes.

Not to be outdone Pavs struck back on thirty nine minutes when Owen Taylor went in for his second try following another well constructed forward drive. With George Billam in fine kicking form the extras were duly added to give Pavs a 19-5 lead at the break.

Following the break, Pavs were very much on the front foot. On forty six minutes, wing Alex Rimmington finished off a superbly created backs move to put Pavs 26-5 up with the Billam extras.

Steve Allen took a break and was replaced by Dan Hyams and the Sutton Coldfield having been under immense pressure now found themselves in trouble with fresh legs on the front row.

Further changes came on fifty five minutes, with talented young centre Morgan James making way for Harry Kerr and Alistair Plant giving the impressive Theo Collier a break.

On the hour, flanker Josh Flanagan fought his way over following another lineout forward drive and with the now customary Billam conversion take Pavs 33-5 in front.

On sixty five minutes, the strong running Matt Molyneux cut through the Sutton Coldfield defence to touch down between the posts. George Billam added the extras to take Pavs pretty much out of sight at 40-5.

With Pavs now running rampant, Alex Rimmington crossed the whitewash on seventy minutes and Aussie Tom Gladwin battled his way over for his first try for the club on seventy five minutes. Billam added the extras to give Pavs a 54-5 lead with minutes left.

Steve Allen made a reappearance to round his 300th appearance for the team to the pleasure of the gathered throngs.

With seconds left, Sutton Coldfield’s very sharp full back chased down a kick, before being illegally tackled on Pavs line. Very unfortunately,  replacement Harry Kerr was wrongly identified as the perpetrator and sent to the bin having only just recently come on. A penalty try was awarded to bring the final score to 54-12 in favour of the home side.

All in all, a fabulous day for Pavs. Confidence  has grown substantially with the group in recent weeks. They are a young and immensely likeable squad who not only revel in each others company, but are now putting things together skilfully on the pitch. Much of the credit must, of course, go to the coaching panel of Phil Eggleshaw and Jonty Green as well as “The Guru” Pat Billam, but the lads can congratulate themselves for maintaining their energy and positivity no matter the circumstances. Pavs now have a week off before playing West Bridgford RFC at on 4th November  – sure to be a spicy affair!! Onwards ….  !!!!

NB In recent times we have selected forward and back of the match. This is now impossible because the whole squad deserve the plaudits. Just a massive well done to everyone will have to suffice!!

Squad : Steve Allen (55 mins), Owen Taylor (2 Tries), Jake Baldry, Theo Collier (55 mins), Tom Gladwin, Josh Alton-Smith (VC), Josh Flanagan (1 Try), Phil Eggleshaw (1 Try), Ben Taylor, George Billam (7 Conv.), Alex Rimmington (2 Tries), Doug Billam (C), Morgan James( 55 mins), Noah Bhatia, Matt Molyneux (1 Try)

Match Report: Carlton Town FC 0 – 2 Stockbridge Park Steels

NPL First Division East – 21 October 2023

Late goals from Elliot Murray and Kurtis Turner saw Stocksbridge Park Steels win 2-0 at Stoke Lane.

The defeat was a major disappointment for the Millers, who came into the game having beaten league leaders Belper town in midweek and would have gone joint top with a win.  But ultimately the visitors finished the stronger side in a fairly flat affair and Carlton could have no complaints at the outcome.

With torrential rain the previous day causing a number of postponements across the country, the Millers did well to even get the game on.  Mark Harvey and Tommy Brookbanks made two changes to the side which had beaten Belper.  Khyle Sargent was suspended and Liam Bateman injured.  They were replaced by Shea Thompson-Harris and Michael Ford.

On a soft surface Carlton had what few opportunities there were in the first half.  Dean Freeman headed just wide from a Niall Davie corner on 10 minutes and visiting goalkeeper Ben Townsend made an excellent stop from Alex Hardwick just after the half hour, tipping his deflected free kick away from goal with Alex Howes firing the loose ball wide.

Lamin Manneh ran through on goal just before the break but was brought back by an offside flag.

Carlton suffered a blow at half time when player of the season Dan Brown, playing his 72nd consecutive match, had to go off through injury.  David Adegbola came on with Thompson-Harris moving to centre half.

Freeman went close to converting early in the second half but just couldn’t get on the end of a Davie free kick before Steels fashioned their first opportunity with Felix Annan saving from Luke Rawson.

Stocksbridge enjoyed more of the possession as the half progressed with Alex O’Connor firing over the top after some good play by Basille Zottos.

Annan then made an excellent save at the near post from Rawson before Charlie Oglesby headed wide from a good position.

With just three minutes remaining Steels won a contentious free kick on the half way line.  Goalkeeper Townsend took it, sending the ball into the penalty area.  Annan came to collect but fumbled the ball and Murray was on hand to fire home.

With Carlton chasing the game a neat passing move from Stocksbridge down the left saw them seal the win in added time when Turner’s deflected shot nestled in the corner of the net.  And Carlton’s misery was complete in the last seconds of the game when Thompson-Harris brought down Rawson on the edge of the box and received a straight red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

The players came across to the small home support at the final whistle to thank them for their efforts.  They will look to get back on track when Stockton Town visit in midweek.

Carlton Town: F Annan, S Thompson-Harris, L Durow, D Brown (D Adegbola 46), D Freeman, N Davie, L Manneh, M Ford, A Hardwick, A Howes (Z Hill 69), N Hylton (M Jawara 78). Unused subs:  L Sisawo-Danso

The Great Escaper (12A)

Mon 23 Oct – Tue 14 Nov, Various Times          £6.80pp         £5.00pp on Tuesdays

In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary. It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn’t the whole story.

It was an inspirational but sanitised retelling of one man’s need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war. Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) – The Great Escaper celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.

The Kiss by Gustav Klimt is one of the most recognised and reproduced paintings in the world. It is perhaps the most popular poster on student dorm walls from Beijing to Boston.

Painted in Vienna around 1908, the evocative image of an unknown embracing couple has captivated viewers with its mystery, sensuality and dazzling materials ever since it was created. But just what lies behind the appeal of the painting – and just who was the artist that created it?

Delving into the details of real gold, decorative designs, symbolism and simmering erotica, a close study of the painting takes us to the remarkable turn of the century Vienna when a new world was battling with the old.

From the director of Frida Kahlo and Mary Cassatt – Painting the Modern Woman comes a powerful, gripping and passionate new film.

Plans for 131 homes in Linby take step closer despite concerns

Plans for 131 new homes in a Nottinghamshire village have taken a step closer after one of two local councils involved approved the proposals.

Gedling Borough councillors have approved Barwood Homes’ plans for the site off Hayden Lane in Linby, despite concerns over potential impacts on local GP surgeries and schools.

However the new estate will require the building of two new access roads via Delia Avenue and Dorothy Avenue, which sit within Ashfield District Council’s boundaries.

The developer therefore requires permission from the both authorities to progress the plans.

During a Gedling Borough Council Planning Committee meeting on October 18, one resident spoke to object on behalf of the nearby Vaughan estate.

They said: “The impact of the development will not only have a detrimental effect on us residents, its safety and reputation will have a critical effect on the town itself and its amenities.

“Hucknall’s own residents cannot get a doctors appointment or dentist at the moment ourself and schools seem to be at full capacity, so adding another 130 homes to the equation is only going to put more pressure on the services.”

The resident said properties would lose value, with new homes being built close enough as to have an impact on the views of open countryside, and local roads would become even more congested.

The site is next to the Sherwood Gate residential development where 255 homes are being built.

Responding to the concerns, Robbie Locke, head of planning and strategic land for the applicant, said: “This is an allocated site in your adopted local plan.

“Your local plan involved an extensive and thorough site selection process, it went through consultation and examination that established the principle of development on this site.

“The local highways authority is entirely accepting of the plans. There are no statutory environmental designations, the council’s open space officer has confirmed the level of proposed open space exceeds policy requirements.

“There would be a large area of open space in the centre of the community which will include a play area. In addition to this a separate 4,000 square meters of open space and additional landscaping areas for drainage and wildlife habitats will all make this feel like a spacious and green community.”

He also said the development would help 26 families on the housing waiting list and 14 more young families struggling to find secure homes of their own.

Cllr David Ellis (Lab) said he agrees it is a policy-compliant scheme but has “some sympathy” with residents concerned about GP and dentist appointments.

The developer has pledged significant sums of money to address this, including £70,985 for the expansion of care at Okenhall Medical Practice, Whyburn Medical Practice and The OM Surgery.

Nottingham University Hospitals Trust has also requested a contribution of £141,808.

Education authority Nottinghamshire County Council requested a contribution of £ 746,672, with £551,334 towards secondary education, £105,016 towards post-16 education and a £90,322 cash injection for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities provision.

“With those guarantees I’m happy to support it,” Cllr Ellis said.

Cllr Sam Smith (Con) said he feared for the 38 per cent loss in natural habitats in the area, but council officer Craig Miles said the council’s policy allows for a reduction to allow housing to be built.

STORM BABET: Flood alert status for Gedling borough as warning issued

A “flooding is possible” warning has been issued for parts of Gedling borough as Storm Babet continues to wreak havoc across the country.

The warning, issued by the Environment Agency, is made when “flooding is possible’ and homes and businesses are told to be prepared.

A flood alert has been issued on parts of the River Trent affecting parts of the borough.

PICTURED: Flooding at Burton Joyce back in 2021

The alert said: “River levels are rising at the Colwick river gauge, as a result of Storm Babet. Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible.

“Areas most at risk are low-lying agricultural land and roads including communities near to the River Trent, such as Stoke Lane at Stoke Bardolph.

Warnings have also been issued to communities around around the tributaries of the River Trent including Dover Beck, Cocker Beck, Woodborough Brook, and Ouse Dyke.

“Heavy rainfall is forecast over the next 48 hours. River levels will continue to rise over the weekend.”

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are patrolling watercourses in the area and liaising with emergency services.

“Please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.”
