Gedling borough churches received more than £8k in government funds in 2023

Four historic churches in the borough have been given a share of £45m in government funding to help preserve their heritage.

Local beneficiaries of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme received more than £8,000 in funding. These include the Kadampa Meditation Centre in Gedling, Holy Trinity Church in Lambley, All Hallows Church in Gedling and St Paul’s Daybrook.

Since 2010, the Places of Worship Fund has invested £346 million in listed churches, synagogues, mosques and temples. The fund provides grants towards the VAT incurred on eligible costs, such as works to the roofs, masonry and monuments integral to the buildings. 

Arts and Heritage Minister Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay said: “As churches across the country fill up for Nativity plays and Christmas services, it’s a reminder of the huge role that they and other places of worship play in the lives of their community.

“The Listed Places of Worship Scheme supports these precious buildings, which are cherished by people of all faiths and none.

“With nearly 5,000 supported over the past year alone, I’m glad to see the difference it has made to visitors, worshippers, and the people who look after them for the benefit of future generations.”

These are the latest applications to have been decided by Gedling Borough Council this week.

Semi-detached homes in Carlton, extensions in Redhill and Ravenshead and new builds on Lambley Lane are just some of the planning applications to have been given the green light by Gedling Borough Council planners in the last week.

Here is a roundup of the published decision notices applications this week (w/e 22/12/23) from around the borough by the council’s planning officers showing eight applications granted permission and one application which was refused.

ON YOUR BIKE: New bicycle donation allows Via Bikeability team to cater for more children across Nottinghamshire.

Via’s Bikeability team has received a donation of 36 new bicycles valued at £12,000 from the Bikeability Trust, a charity and leading authority on cycling education according to a statement published by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) works in partnership with Via’s Bikeability team and over the last year, over 10,500 adults and young children have been trained in 211 schools across the county including Gedling borough residents and students.

The Bikeability programme is renowned for its inclusivity and impact and is designed to cater to individuals of all ages and abilities, to equip them with the skills to cycle safely and the donation will enhance the team’s capacity to deliver crucial cycling training across Nottinghamshire.

Councillor Neil Clarke MBE, Nottinghamshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, expressed his support for the initiative and said, “The Bikeability programme has made a significant impact on schools throughout Nottinghamshire. We have received positive feedback from participating schools that highlight the programme’s effectiveness in imparting essential cycling skills to children and adults of all abilities.”

Via’s Bikeability Team was lauded for their remarkable successes at an end-of-year celebration on 21 December at Via’s Bilsthorpe Depot. Emily Cherry, Chief Executive of the Bikeability Trust, expressed her gratitude for their efforts in a congratulatory video and further said, “My mission, through Bikeability training, is to get more people cycling more often and in a safer manner, and the dedicated Via Bikeability team is doing exactly that. Moreover, I want to make sure that by the end of primary school, every child has the confidence, knowledge and the skill to cycle.”

“The donation of these 36 bicycles will act as the driving force to broaden the team’s reach by giving them the resources to cater for more children across Nottinghamshire.”

The impact of the Bikeability training programme in Nottinghamshire has been highlighted by the positive feedback received from several schools in the region. Spectrum Wasp Group, a charity that supports parents with children and young people on the autistic spectrum with disabilities, special and additional needs and Abbey Primary School in Mansfield, are among the organisations that have expressed their appreciation for the programme’s effectiveness and its impact on their students.

Spectrum Wasp Group provided glowing feedback on the programme which stated, “It was well organised with a structured approach and a team that effectively supported our children with special needs. By the end of the session, children who had never ridden a bike gained enough confidence to ride a bike with pedals. The parents were overwhelmed with emotion; one parent bought a bike immediately as a result of this.”

PLANNING: Newstead ‘Glamping’ application refused by Gedling planners

Plans to erect 5no. glamping units, a bike store, recycling/waste facilities, parking/turning area with electric vehicle charging points together with associated footpaths and a water treatment plant and biodiversity enhancements in Newstead have been refused by Gedling Borough Council planners.

The planning application at Newstead Abbey Park, Nursery Gardens, Station Avenue, Newstead, NG15 8GE was submitted in August, 2023 by Glampitect Ltd acting as agent on behalf of the applicant, Northage of Pinxton.

A recommendation sheet dated December 22 authorised by the Planning Delivery Manager / Principal Planning Officer at Gedling Borough Council recommended that the application should be refused and formal notice of the refusal was issued on December 22.

The recommendation sheet highlighted that ‘The proposal would result in built form in an area that there have previously been none’ and that ‘Owing to the proximity to a group of existing dwellings where there is a high sensitivity to change (in terms of noise and disturbance), and in the absence of any defined mitigation, it is considered that the proposed glamping site would have a significant adverse impact on the amenity of nearby residential properties’.

The recommendation sheet further stated that ‘There are fundamental policy objections to the proposal, and it is considered that these cannot be overcome. The applicant has been made aware of the situation and in order to avoid the applicant incurring further abortive costs, consideration has not been delayed by further discussions, which cannot resolve the
reasons for refusal, to facilitate a decision in a timely manner.‘

Newstead Parish council formerly objected to the application on November 23 advising that ‘If this application is granted there is likely to be considerable adverse impact on the neighbouring properties, this impact will relate to noise and air pollution from the activities of those using the proposed facilities and increased levels of traffic passing their properties. Therefore, we believe this proposal does not represent sustainable development where the merits of this proposal would not outweigh the substantial harm caused to existing residents who reside in close proximity to this site.’

GEDLING POTHOLES: MyNotts app relaunched with brand-new look allowing easy reporting of road issues and more.

A free, easy to use app which gives Nottinghamshire residents access to a wide range of County Council services has been given a brand-new look.

We decided to review the process on the app to see how easy it was to report pothole / road damage and it was remarkably easy in our opinion.

We followed ten easy steps –

  • Open the app
  • Click report at the bottom
  • Search for a road / postcode
  • Mark where the issue is – just tap the screen where the issue is
  • Click confirm
  • State what the problem is
  • Type in the location
  • Type in the description
  • Add a picture
  • Click submit and the report has been made.

You can even look at photos of completed work via the Highways section which shows images of some of the 352,000 square metres of patch repairs completed since 2021.

The MyNotts app was launched by Nottinghamshire County Council in January 2020 and allows users to make the most of its services wherever they are by using their smartphone.

Since its launch, the app has had almost 550,000 views with the most frequently visited services being highways, waste and recycling and schools – while residents are also able to use it to report potholes and faulty streetlights as well as apply for school places.

Now the new-look app has been given a revamp to ultimately improve accessibility and customer experience, which includes the way people can report highways issues and control how they receive push notifications.

Councillor Richard Jackson, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said he was delighted with the new-look app and encouraged anybody who has not downloaded it to do so.

He said: “The MyNotts app has proved to be a huge success since its launch nearly four years ago, with more and more residents continuing to download it to access vital council services in a quick and efficient way.

“As the app has evolved over time, we have acted on feedback from people who use it to make sure we deliver the improvements they have asked for.

“The new-look app looks fantastic, and I would like to thank those in our customer service centre who have been involved in the development and testing of it, helping to make sure the user experience is better and quicker than ever before.

“Our ultimate aim is to significantly improve the ability to access information and services and provide a better overall customer experience for Nottinghamshire residents who use this method of digital engagement.

“I would encourage anyone who hasn’t downloaded the app to do so, so they can see for themselves how useful it is.”

The MyNotts app continues to include a vast array of information about other council services, including adult social care, how to register a birth or death, arranging a wedding at a council venue, libraries, recycling centres and fostering and adoption.

Customers can also take advantage of the app’s Recyclopaedia feature, which provides information about what residents can and cannot recycle in their household waste, while there are also some links to a number of district and borough council services such as bulky waste removal and missed bins.

There is also a Cost-of-Living section to help people access information and support to help manage financial pressures.

Residents can use the app to find out more about what’s on across Robin Hood County, including links to popular tourist attractions Sherwood Forest Country Park and Visitor Centre, Holme Pierrepont and Rufford Abbey.

Which pharmacies will be open in Gedling borough on Christmas day and New Years day??

NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have published a list of eleven pharmacies that will be open on Christmas Day throughout Nottinghamshire and two of these are in Gedling borough.

  • Jayplex Dispensing Chemists, Woodthorpe will be open from 10.00am – 2.00pm
  • Westdale Pharmacy, Mapperley will be open from 10.00am – 12.00pm.

There are three pharmacies in Gedling borough open on Monday, January 1, 2024 –

  • Asda Pharmacy, 111-127 Front Street, Arnold will be open from 10.00am – 4.00pm
  • Boots Pharmacy, 85 Front Street, Arnold will be open from 2.00pm – 4.00pm
  • Mann’s Pharmacy, 852A Woodborough Road, Mapperley will be open 10.00am – 12.00pm

On your marks… Latest funding worth £50,000 to help boost talented athletes closes on December 31

The latest funding round to support the county’s budding Olympians, Paralympians and Special Olympians is due to close at the end of December.

Gedling borough athletes have just over a week left to apply to the £50,000 Talented Athletes Fund which aims to help local athletes overcome potential financial hurdles such as training and equipment costs.

Nottinghamshire County Council has continued its commitment to support more up-and-coming athletes to recognise their potential in their chosen sport, particularly those competing in disability/parasports who may require expensive adapted equipment, clothing, or have higher transport costs.

With rising costs, grants up to £1,000 are now available for Nottinghamshire athletes who have represented their country at national events in the last 24 months, which includes a range of Sport England-recognised sports, from speed skating to swimming and from fencing to table tennis, and have until the end of December 2023 to apply.

Councillor John Cottee, the county council’s Cabinet Member for Communities said,

“We are immensely proud of being able to continue to support our up-and-coming sporting talent. With rising prices, and the pressures of paying coaching fees, equipment and travel costs, this funding could go a little way to helping Nottinghamshire athletes strive for their dreams. This funding builds on previous years’ support and maintaining its availability to the county’s future sportspeople has been recognised”.

Kerryn Chamberlin, Strategic Director of Active Notts, added,

“These grants can really help overcome some of the financial challenges that competitive sport creates for people, such as travel expenses, equipment, coaching fees or even gym memberships. For our local athletes, this opportunity might be their path towards competing at the Olympics, Paralympics, or Special Olympics, and is not one to be missed.

“We would love budding athletes from all over the county to apply to this fund, no matter what their background.”

The Fund will close on December 31, 2023.  Funding will be allocated to successful applicants from next April 2024.
