Potholes a ‘green dream’

I would like to commend Nottinghamshire County Council for finding a way of getting us all out of our cars and clearing the borough roads of traffic – potholes.

It must be part of some kind of loony green policy to keep roads so bad that cars become a thing of the past. I would not be shocked if NCC’s head of transport policy was… a Ms Greta Thunberg. The state of the roads must be a dream for environmentalists.

But seriously, this state of affairs is now having a direct effect on my driving ability because I am finding myself constantly looking ahead at the road surface rather than maintaining on overall view of everything in front of me.

It is also becoming almost impossible to drive in a straight line as a result of having to avoid potholes and it is just a matter of time before I get stopped by the police for driving in what must look like a manner of being in charge of a vehicle whilst under the influence.

The recent announcement made by the government to direct the money saved from the cancellation of parts of HS2 into the road fund to repair potholes and running into billions gave some hope but don’t hold your breath.

I think we will be very fortunate to see any of this cash within the next two years by which time I will be on a second set of wheels and goodness knows how many sets of tyres.

Peter Moffatt,
Arnold

Lack of flooding responsibility ‘makes blood boil’

It is a disgrace that the councils, Highways Agency and Severn-Trent Water all escape punishment for flooding.

The drains on roadsides are all blocked before any rain and are an absolute disgrace. No wonder there are floods. Who cleans them? Nobody!

When was the River Trent last dredged? When I was a boy this happened regularly and Now I know why – to stop the floods/

A number of roads locally not been tendered to regarding drain clearance, hedge cutting or removal of flood waste.

Any flood damage should be the responsibility of the local councils and the Highways Agency and residents should be compensated in full if they are impacted.

It makes my blood boil the injustice and sheer incompetence of our councils who claim bankruptcy and hardship but still get paid fat cat bonuses.

Use public transport if don’t want to pay road tax

All vehicles cause wear and tear on the roads therefore this stupid system of road-tax free motoring has to stop.

If people don’t want to pay towards the upkeep of the roads then use public transport. the road tax collected should be ringfenced and used to maintain the roads and help towards modernisation.

Whoever thought tax free cars was a good idea was a complete fool.

Transform mean streets into clean streets

The state of streets in Carlton are a disgrace.

As well as rough surfaces, uneven pavements and trip hazards in the form of potholes, there is the matter of cleanliness.

Perhaps a ‘name and shame’ approach or a league table would help to concentrate minds – a bit like they do with rivers!

Back in the day it wasn’t unusual to see shopkeepers sweeping and swilling the stretch in front of their own premises. Is this commendable practice still widespread?

It would help in transforming the mean streets into the clean streets.

Having said that, I have spotted volunteers before tidying up flower beds and sweeping streets in Netherfield on a freezing cold day to spruce things up, so thank you to them for helping to redress the balance.

D Reed,
Carlton

Time to put our country first

WITH the Ukraine Russia conflict, the horrendous problems in Israel and Gaza and now the Houthis trying to stop trade through the Red Sea and Suez Canal backed by Iran isn’t it time the people who run this country took their heads out from the sand and realised what most of us can see already?

It’s called reality.

The time has come to put the safety and security of our country and its people above all else. Firstly we need to become more self-sufficient, never mind that the various climate change factions will clutch their comfort blankets. We are sitting on many years worth of gas and coal to provide energy that it not at risk of global disruption.

We have an excellent farming industry, both arable and livestock, which could provide the majority of our needs if they were only allowed to get on with it, and also paid sensible prices for their produce by the big supermarkets rather than being cut to the bone to appease shareholders.

And finally, let’s make things easier and more cost effective to kick start the manufacturing industry in this country. What a waste having nearly all our everyday items made on the other side of the world.

Ravenshead

    Set in 1967, The Miracle Club is a heart-warming film that follows the story of three generations of close friends, Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates), and Dolly (Agnes O’Casey) of Ballygar, a hard-knocks community in Dublin, who have one tantalizing dream: to win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes, that place of miracles that draws millions of visitors each year. When the chance to win presents itself, the women seize it.

The women secure tickets and set out on the journey that they hope will change their lives, with Chrissie joining in place of her mother. The glamor and sophistication of Chrissie, who has just returned from a nearly 40-year exile in the United States, are not her only difficult traits. Old wounds are reopened along the way, forcing the women to confront their pasts even as they travel in search of a miracle. Deep wounds from the past can only be healed by the curative power of love and friendship.

    Co-op axes reward scheme for exclusive member price cuts

    The Co-op has announced it is ditching its points scheme in a massive shake-up to its membership club

    The supermarket giant, which has stores across Gedling borough, is set to discontinue its 2p for every £1 spent rewards scheme and replace it with a range of member-exclusive prices and deals throughout the business.

    Starting on January 24th, customers will no longer receive rewards on branded food purchases at The Co-op.

    The retailer said that instead, members will “benefit from price reductions on branded as well as own-brand foods for the first time”, along with receiving two personalized offers every week.

    The new offers being made available to Co-op food customers will also be available to insurance, funeralcare and legal services customers.

    Shoppers with existing rewards pots will have until December 31, 2024 to either spend their rewards with The Co-op or chose to donate them to local causes.

    The Co-op also stressed that the changes to the rewards scheme won’t change its commitment to supporting local communities, adding it would continue to do that through its £4m dedicated Community Partnership Fund.

    Beat the Heat: Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle with Air Conditioning

    An air conditioner is useful for more reasons than one. Air conditioning produces a pleasant environment that promotes relaxation, productivity, and sound sleep since it regulates temperature and humidity—reducing levels of allergens and indoor air pollution, which may cause heat-related diseases. To maximise the health advantages of chilling the air, select the appropriate air conditioning equipment, manage temperature and humidity, and adhere to other guidelines.

    Unlocking summer comfort: the vital role of air conditioning

    A cool summer may be hard to get without air conditioning. These days, employees want a comfortable place to work, sleep, and unwind. A trustworthy air conditioning company can assist you in meeting your demands in this situation. Air conditioning is necessary to control humidity and temperature to maintain a comfortable home environment and guard against dehydration and heat stroke. They benefit those with respiratory conditions by lowering allergens and indoor air pollution. Air conditioners that use less energy provide more comfort and improved health.

    The best HVAC unit for your needs

    There are a few factors to consider while choosing the ideal air conditioner for your requirements. The amount of open space is the most crucial consideration. Check its cooling power to ensure that your air conditioner can produce cold air efficiently. An extensive examination of energy efficiency is required to reduce energy use and the harm it does to the environment. It is critical to consider noise levels, expenses, and upkeep. Consider these factors to enhance your comfort and well-being while searching for the ideal air conditioning system.

    How to choose the healthiest temperature and humidity levels

    Verify that you are comfortable with the humidity and temperature in your air-conditioned space. Usually, the range of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius is the best for the weather. This series reduces excessive sweating and improves the quality of sleep. Problems with dehydration are rare in an environment like this. You can efficiently avoid mould production, dust mites, and other tiny animals by keeping the relative humidity level between 40% and 60%. These offenders are frequently the ones that trigger respiratory issues and allergies. By carefully controlling the humidity and temperature in your home, you may greatly extend the life and well-being of your family.

    More tips on how to make air conditioning work better

    To stay healthy, you should do more than use air conditioning. Regularly cleaning and replacing filters is important to keep the quality high and the airflow smooth. Warm up a room by moving cool air around it, which some chandeliers can do. Air conditioning may make you thirstier, so drink enough water all day. If you follow these guidelines, your air conditioner may perform better, and your house will be healthier and more pleasant.

    Being comfortable is a healthy thing to do, and air conditioning gives you that. It manages temperature and humidity to improve the quality of the air inside and lower the risk of getting sick from the heat. We get the most out of our air conditioning and live happier, healthier lives if we carefully choose it, keep the temperature and humidity in check, and do other things people tell us to do. Air conditioning makes places cool, which is very good for our health.

    Rwanda bill: Here’s how Gedling borough’s MPs voted on the plan

    Both of Gedling borough’s MPs voted in favour of the Rwanda bill when it went before the House of Commons last night (18).

    The bill had been initially introduced to declare the African nation “safe” and to make arrangements for speedy removals of asylum seekers from the UK.

    But close to 60 Conservatives defied prime minister Rishi Sunak and voted for the amendment from former minister Robert Jenrick in the House of Commons on Tuesday (January 16).

    The amendment aimed to severely limit individual asylum seekers’ ability to appeal against being put on a flight to Rwanda.

    Both Conservative MPs Tom Randall (Gedling) and Mark Spencer (Sherwood) last night voted in favour of the bill during the third reading.

    Mr Randall had been amongst the group of almost 60 rebel Tory MPs who voted for Jenrick’s amendments to be included on Tuesday night.

    Mr Spencer voted against making the amendments,

    What is the Rwanda Bill?

    Under the Government’s plan, migrants who cross the English Channel on small boats could be sent on a one-way trip to Rwanda rather than being allowed to try to seek asylum in the UK.

    The legislation along with a recently signed treaty with Kigali are aimed at ensuring the scheme is legally watertight following a Supreme Court ruling against it last year.

    No asylum seekers arriving via unauthorised routes have been relocated as yet following a series of challenges in the courts.

    Ale fans looking forward to return of Dyb Dob Beer Festival in Arnold

    Ale fans are already counting down the days to this year’s Dyb Dob Beer Festival, which will take place in Arnold on February 3.

    The event helps raise crucial funds for the the 2nd Arnold Scout Group. Only recently the group have had to install a brand new boiler and are currently costing up a new roof and toilet floor so fundraising is essential at present.

    The 2nd Arnold Scout Group fundraising committee has been busy organising the event with social media posts stating that there will be Beer, Cider, Gin, Soft Drinks, Hot and Cold food and Snacks available all day. Children are welcome until 6pm and Blurred Mondays will be providing the musical entertainment from 8pm.

    The event is held at Atherley House, Calverton Road, Arnold, NG5 8FH (Scout Hut is next to Arnold Jeans)

    Lincoln Green Brewery Company will once again be supporting the festival.

    Gedling MP Tom Randall among Rwanda bill rebels

    Gedling MP Tom Randall was among the group of more than 50 Conservative MPs who rebelled over prime minister Rishi Sunak’s bill to revive the stalled Rwanda plan.

    The MPs rebelled against their party leadership to vote for changes to the proposed bill, which aimed to make sure UK or international law could not be used to stop people being deported to Rwanda.

    Mr Randall backed amendments to the bill tabled by former immigration minister Robert Jenrick and veteran Tory Sir Bill Cash.

    Robert Jenrick
    Some 58 MPs backed Robert Jenrick’s amendment (pictured, above)

    Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is battling to see off another major revolt today (17) at the third reading of the bill

    In a post on his social media channel, Mr Randall wrote: “This Rwanda bill is far-reaching legislation designed for to protect our borders and crack down on illegal immigration. I am backing some of former Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick’s amendments which I believe will further strengthen the Bill, but I am looking forward to seeing this legislation on the statute book so that we can stop the boats.”

    The Government’s Rwanda plan aims to send migrants who cross the English Channel on small boats on one-way trips to the central African nation rather than allow them to try and stay in the UK.

    So far, the policy has cost around £290million but has not succeeded in sending anyone to Rwanda after a series of challenges in the courts.

    Some 58 MPs backed Mr Jenrick’s amendment.

    However, no Conservatives voted against the Bill at second reading – despite similar warnings from the right of the party which had appeared to put it in jeopardy beforehand.

    Tory Party deputy chairman Lee Anderson and Brendan Clarke-Smith stepped down in order to vote for two amendments.

    Mr Sunak is battling to see off another major revolt today (17) at the third reading of the bill.

    Nottinghamshire County Council eyes balanced budget amid rising costs

    Nottinghamshire County Council says progress has been made on closing its £60m budget shortfall, despite increasing demand for services.

    Higher costs for providing social care and supporting those with special educational needs and disabilities have pushed its outgoings up in recent months.

    But the Conservative-led authority is expecting to be able to balance its budget for the 2024/25 financial year, which has a current estimated shortfall of £5.4m.

    However, it faces a total £55m funding gap for the three years until 2026/27.

    All councils are legally required to set a balanced budget, which is more difficult when inflation and higher demand pushes costs up.

    Newly-released budget papers say savings could be achieved by focusing more on prevention of problems, reducing the demand for emergency need.

    They also recommend a 1.99 per cent council tax increase and a one per cent rise in the Adult Social Care precept from April to help balance the books.

    This would mean the county council part of Nottinghamshire residents’ council tax bills rises by 2.99 per cent for the next year.

    Cabinet Member for Finance Cllr Richard Jackson, pictured, above; says it continues to be a challenge to maintain services while still finding ways to save money

    Councillor Richard Jackson (Con), the cabinet member for finance, says it is a challenge to maintain services while still finding ways to save money.

    “The financial situation has improved, although we’ve had one or two setbacks. We’ve been working on addressing spending pressures that have emerged for the next year and reducing the funding gap,” he said.

    “We are confident now that we will have a balanced budget for the next couple of years.

    “We are looking at maintaining services but doing them in a different way. This includes working with community groups, district councils and the third sector, and delivering those services more efficiently.

    “Our starting point is to maintain services and make ourselves more efficient. Part of that is moving out of this big, expensive building to a purpose-built one elsewhere.

    “It’s a constant challenge to find the balance. Our budget consultation showed that people are open to the idea of council tax increases, which we would prefer to budget cuts.”

    Councils across the country are being stretched by inflation and growing demand for services, but Cllr Jackson offered assurances the authority was “a million miles away” from declaring effective bankruptcy, as Nottingham City Council did in November.

    “Difficult decisions that we have made locally have put our finances in a really sound position,” he said.

    “We have accrued reserves, which we can spend now we are now in exceptional times. It’s not sustainable in the long-term, but it allows us to work through the savings we need to make.”

    He said leader Councillor Ben Bradley would continue to lobby for increased government funding.

    The council’s revised budget figures will be presented to the Overview Committee on Thursday, January 25, and will go before full council later this month.

    Residency Options in Europe: Golden Visas and Permanent Residence

    Most countries are interested in attracting people willing to invest their money in the state’s economy in exchange for a special status and, later on, a cherished passport. Several European countries have introduced a program called golden visa. It allows you to enjoy all the benefits of the host country and conduct business activities on a legal basis. It is the most affordable and fastest way to get the coveted document in the leading EU countries.

    The conditions and rules for obtaining, for example, Greece Residence by investment, are considered individually, depending on the investor’s goals and budget. More than 100 countries work under this program and annually attract thousands of investors who aim to invest on favourable terms.

    Are you looking for the best conditions and a chance to live legally in Europe? We recommend you contact Immigrant Invest’s experts in the field of immigration. They will help you choose an acceptable option that will suit your capabilities, availability of the necessary amount in the bank, and fulfillment of the established rules.

    Concept of Golden Visas in Europe

    Are you interested in moving to another country with prospects for you and your family? A European golden visa is what you need. This scheme of immigration through investment of finances by participants is carried out to attract foreign investors to live and do business with the benefit of both parties.

    In addition, such a financial resource provides both working aspects and the opportunity to travel and get acquainted with the world’s cultural heritage. The Golden Document involves obtaining a certificate in the rapidly developing countries of the European Union through significant monetary contributions in real estate, business, and financing of a national foundation or charity. This exchange is promising not only for the applicant but also for his closest relatives.

    It is also worth noting that the golden passport does not guarantee citizenship, but the program participant can enjoy certain benefits. It is necessary to live in the host country for a certain period to become a citizen of the host country during the investment process. The leading expert of the Immigrant Invest agency, Zlata Erlach, can tell you more about it. The company’s employees offer to participate in the program on simplified terms with minimal involvement in the process.

    List of European Countries Offering Golden Visas

    The investor visa is valid in many territories of the European Union.  Foreigners who aim to emigrate and live in Europe and obtain the coveted document can choose one of the proposed countries where this program is valid:

    • Bulgaria;
    • Greece;
    • Italy;
    • Malta;
    • Austria;
    • Spain;
    • Portugal;
    • Switzerland;
    • Ireland;
    • Belgium;
    • Germany.

    The countries mentioned above are some of the most beautiful parts of the world, with hospitable populations, excellent climates, and promising business opportunities. EU golden visa is a way to stay legally in the country, as well as to work and travel. Nevertheless, the leading participant must meet the minimum requirements of staying in the country for further positive results and obtaining a visa.

    Key Benefits of European Golden Visa for Investor

    The special status of a resident implies not only financial costs for approval and obtaining a certificate but also the opportunity to use the advantage. Several advantages attract foreign investors, which become fundamental to the decision to participate in the program:

    1. Freedom of movement without visa denial or other unpleasant situations.
    2. Family security and ensuring the younger generation a high level of education and medical care.
    3. Increased business opportunities with permanent residence in Europe.
    4. Favorable and mitigating tax system.
    5. Profitable operations for the future.
    6. No restrictions for permanent residence in one country as an investor.
    7. Obtaining a passport for a citizen of the country and participation in economic and political activities of the state.

    Because competition in the visa market is growing, investment projects expand the list of pros and provide opportunities for foreigners to replenish the budget fund of European countries annually.

    Perspective to European Permanent Residence

    In addition to the advantages mentioned above of RP or PR, a golden visa allows one to get the coveted passport of a citizen of the country in the future. It means that the applicant has to wait from 5 to 10 years to get the coveted document from the moment of authorization and issuance of special status. During this time, the program participant can learn the language, work, travel, get acquainted with the cultural heritage of the host country, and understand whether he has made the right choice.

    Conclusion

    Permanent residence in EU is a chance to start your life anew, conduct entrepreneurial activity, expand partner programs for business, and provide yourself and your family with unlimited opportunities in the territory of more than one country. You can find out about all the conditions, requirements, and relevant documents for applying for this project from the specialists of the Immigrant Invest agency.

    Motion calling for immediate ceasefire in Gaza to be heard at next full meeting of Gedling Borough Council

    A motion will be heard at a Gedling Borough Council meeting later this month calling for an immediate ceasefire amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

    The motion has been put forward by independent councillors Russell Whiting and Des Gibbons with the aim of adding the voice of Gedling Borough Council to those calling for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

    It also recognises the impact that the conflict is having on residents in the borough and thanks community leaders for the work they have done in the light of the rise in Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

    The council will also be asked to look at how the events in Gaza can be commemorated in the borough.

    The motion will be voted on at the next Full Council meeting on Wednesday, January 24.

    A new motion is calling for an immediate ceasefire amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

    Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is calling for humanitarian pauses to allow aid into Gaza and the release of hostages, as opposed to a ceasefire

    The Labour Party’s official stance on the issue, as laid out by leader Keir Starmer, is calling for humanitarian pauses to allow aid into Gaza and the release of hostages, as opposed to a ceasefire, a stance shared by the Conservative government.

    Councillor Russell Whiting, who represents Colwick Ward, said “People around the world have watched in horror as the situation in Gaza gets worse every day.

    “The scenes we are witnessing in real-time on our TVs are horrific. Children having amputations without anesthetic and women giving birth with no healthcare provision are unimaginable and should not be tolerated by the international community.

    “The world has seen this level of suffering, recently in Rwanda and Srebronica, a genocide which Gedling Borough Council marks annually. I hope that our fellow councillors will support this motion next week.”

    Councillor Des Gibbons, who represents Bestwood St Albans Ward, added: “We have been contacted by people throughout Gedling borough who are struggling to come to terms with the level of pain and suffering being experienced in Gaza.

    “Councils across the country have added their voices to the United Nations, major aid organisations and religious leaders in calling for a ceasefire. We must not stand by and allow another genocide to take place.”

    Cllrs Gibbons and Whiting both resigned from the Labour Party back in November over their stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict.
