Fancy a ‘Full English’ for £4? …. Its less than a month to Gedling’s ‘Big Breakfast’

Three times a year the aroma of a full English breakfast being cooked fills the air at Phoenix Farm Methodist Church, Wollaton Avenue, Gedling.

The ‘Big Breakfast’ event is now entering its 15th year and amazingly the event that charged £4 when it started has never changed the cost – it is still £4 for a ‘Big Breakfast’ today.

For £4, attendees get Cereal or porridge, a full English with 2 sausages, 2 bacon, egg, hash brown, fried bread, tomatoes, beans, toast and tea or coffee.

The event runs three times a year February, May & October with the next one on February 10 from 10:00am – 1.00pm.

Gedling Eye caught up with Terry Allwood, one of the dedicated team of volunteers who run the event who said: “It all started 14 years ago, our mums attended the church at that time and the church had started to struggle to keep things going. This is when the Big Breakfast started.

“My friend, Adrian Ingham, my wife, Gyorgyi Allwood & myself started to do the Big Breakfast to generate funds for the church. We had a brilliant time growing up in the Boys Brigade so wanted to put something back and help.

“The money that we generate now still helps the church to function, but also helps the church to put on other events that help the local community, like food parcels, coffee mornings etc.

“On a normal Saturday we can serve up to 100 breakfasts and in 2019 we started to do a Christmas dinner in December as well, that continues today.

“We work in the kitchen, Adrian Ingham, Gyorgyi Allwood & myself with Adrian’s daughter, Emma Ingham and my son, Daniel Allwood helping to serve the customers.

“There’s also a team of guys from the church that do the waitering, washing up”

The next ‘Big Breakfast’ event will be held on February 10 from 10:00am – 1.00pm.

The church can be found at 6A Wollaton Avenue, Gedling, Nottingham, NG4 4HXP and further information can be found on their website HERE or their social media channel HERE.

Navigating UK Board Portals: A Comprehensive Comparison for Informed Decision-Making

Efficient decision-making and clear communication are of the utmost importance in the UK’s fast-paced corporate environment. The rise of board software as an effective resources for corporate governance and cooperation is seen across a wide range of sectors. Now we may compare board portals specifically designed for the UK in detail.

Board Portal Essentials

Before we start our board portals comparison for UK market, there are a lot of useful features that come with board portals. Customized to match the specific requirements of UK organizations, these systems provide intuitive user interfaces and strong security features.

The adoption of board portals is not just a technological shift, it’s a cultural transformation. Organizations that embrace these tools are better positioned to navigate the complexities of the modern business environment.

Safety

Businesses in the UK prioritise security measures due to the growing number of cyber threats. By offering a haven for sensitive data, board meeting software guarantees data security and compliance with legal requirements. UK boards must prioritize data security and regulatory adherence. Look for portals with robust data encryption, audit trails, and compliance certifications like ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance.

Interface that is Easy to Use

A board of directors portal needs to be easy to navigate. Board members will be able to learn the platform fast because of its intuitive design, which boosts efficiency and productivity.

Management of Documents

Board portals are essential for effective document management, which is critical for productive board meetings. These portals allow for the easy sharing, editing, and version control of documents. Board members will have quick access to meeting documents thanks to board of directors software common repositories. Version control, quick editing, and simple sharing all work to expedite cooperation and cut down on mistakes.

Let’s take a closer look at four prominent board reporting software, considering their feature and overall experience.

BoardPad

BoardPad is a well-known board portal software platform that provides secure collaboration, meeting tools, and an easy interface for managing documents. Because of its compatibility with UK-specific systems like XBRL and its compliance with GDPR, it is a formidable challenger for boards in the UK.

Deals

With features like strong access restrictions and ISO 27001 certification, iDeals is a secure platform. Its robust reporting and analytics capabilities are ideal for UK boards that want to make data-driven decisions.

BoardPacks

BoardPacks provides essential virtual board meeting software features like secure document sharing, agenda drafting, and voting at an affordable price with an easy-to-use interface. On the other hand, some alternatives may have more robust security measures and integrations.

Diligent Board

An industry front-runner with a solid foothold in the UK, Diligent Board offers a robust platform with cutting-edge tools for governance, capabilities for real-time communication, and connectors with widely used UK software. But compared to its rivals, its prices can be a little steep.

Considerations for Choosing a Board Portal

Before you start looking for committee management software for your company, there are a few important considerations you must make. Your company’s size is an essential factor to consider. The most critical thing is to recognize that big companies have quite different demands than small businesses.

Opt for board portal software that aligns with your company’s size and structure, and supports the needs of your stakeholders and decision-makers.

Budget is also an important factor to consider. It is important to review both initial setup costs and ongoing maintenance or subscription expenses. Look for platforms, including Board Intelligence, that offer flexible pricing options to find the solution that fits within your budget.

This approach helps ensure that the board portal platform you choose delivers value while remaining within budget.

The ability to integrate with current systems is becoming a significant factor in determining whether a virtual boardroom software implementation is effective. Pick a platform that works well with what you already have installed. This guarantees a seamless transfer, reducing interruptions to existing procedures and increasing overall efficiency.

Conclusion

Picking the right board management solutions is an investment in your board’s efficiency and security. By prioritizing UK-specific features, compliance, and security, and carefully comparing options based on your needs and budget, UK boards can navigate the maze of board portal choices with confidence. Remember, the best board management software is the one that seamlessly integrates into your existing workflows and empowers your board to make informed decisions, driving success in the ever-evolving UK corporate landscape.

CALL THE PURR-LICE: Cat and dog theft set to be made criminal offence

The government is expected to back making stealing cats and dogs a specific criminal offence in the United Kingdom, reports the BBC.

The new bill is being debated in the Commons today (19) and would create an offence of “pet abduction”.

Under the legislation, anyone convicted of the offence could face a fine or a maximum of five years in prison.

Ministers are said to be “very sympathetic” to the plan.

Pets are currently only considered property and any theft is covered by the 1968 Theft Act.

The government promised to make the abduction of dogs a criminal offence in 2021, but no such legislation has yet been passed.

The Pet Abduction Bill is being brought forward by Conservative MP Anna Firth.

The Southend West MP told the BBC low prosecution rates made stealing a pet a “low-risk, high-reward crime”.

Pet abduction has been a key focus of public campaigns, which have resulted in five petitions since 2016, all triggering debates, as well as a presentation Bill and a Ten-Minute Rule Bill.

The Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance is one of the groups that have been campaigning since 2014 to change how pet theft is treated in law.

Co-founder Debbie Matthews said: “If someone does happen to get caught, they usually just get a small fine, even if dogs are still missing.

“There is no punishment. It is seen as a low risk, high reward crime.

“Furthermore, the emotional impact of a pet being stolen is not recognised and most are not recovered.”

A second reading of the Bill will be debated in the Commons today.

New £191k disabled-friendly public toilet block now open in Arnold town centre park

A new public toilet block and disabled access changing facility is now open at a park in Arnold‘s town centre.

The state-of-the-art block at King George V Recreation Ground boasts new specialist “Changing Places” facilities.

The development has cost a total of £191,500 and funding for the project came from the Changing Places Fund, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and match funding from Gedling Borough Council.

As well as the specialist bathroom, two accessible unisex toilets, both of which include baby changing facilities, have also been built at the site and will be open during park opening hours.

The Changing Places toilet facility is designed to help meet the needs of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well people with other physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis who often need extra equipment and space to allow them to use the toilets safely and comfortably.

The facilities include height adjustable changing benches, a tracking hoist system, space for disabled people and carers, a central toilet and a non-slip floor.

The roof of the building features PV solar panels which will be used to help power the block, with remaining energy being fed back into the grid.

Access to the changing places facilities is available by calling a 24-hour hotline where there will be a selection of questions to obtain a code.

The site will be monitored by the council’s existing network of CCTV cameras.

The development is the second Changing Places toilets introduced by the council, following the installation of similar equipment at Gedling Country Park in 2017.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke MBE said: “I’m delighted to announce that our new public toilet block at King George V Recreation Ground in Arnold is now open.

“These toilets provide a vital facility for people visiting the park, the town centre or the new AMP building, and the inclusion of specialist “Changing Places” equipment means that no one is excluded from accessing them.

“This project is part of our commitment to invest in and revitalise our town centres and I’m sure will be a welcome addition to the area for many of our residents and visitors.

“We are also looking at potential locations around the borough where we may be able to install further Changing Places facilities, subject to necessary funding and planning permissions.”

Councillor Kathryn Fox, Portfolio Holder for Life Chances and Vulnerability said: “This is great news as we want Arnold to be as accessible as possible for all visitors.

“These new state-of-the-art facilities will be a wonderful addition and ensure more people can enjoy the town’s facilities.”

Funding secured for improved lighting and new CCTV at Arnot Hill Park

Lighting in Arnot Hill Park will start being upgraded over the coming weeks to help combat anti-social behaviour and thefts.

The police and council hope that upgrading the lighting to LED will make the area brighter and safer at night

A total of 39 lights will be upgraded in the Arnold park.

The existing Victorian-style lamps around the park will be improved and replaced with new LED lighting which will increase visibility and be more cost effective.

Improved lighting and four new street lights will also be installed around the car parks in a bid to deter vehicle crime and bike thefts and help people feel safer when visiting at night.

Gedling Borough Council also says it plans to install CCTV cameras in the park over the next few months.

The series of measures have been made possible after the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire secured a further £1m from the Home Office’s Safer Streets scheme.

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry said: “Arnot Hill Park is a beautiful outdoor space for the people of Gedling to enjoy, and we are keen that residents can enjoy this space and feel safe all year round, and at any time of day.

Gedling Borough Council
Our new street lights will also be installed around the car parks in a bid to deter vehicle crime and bike thefts

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry said the new upgrades will ensure the park is even more accessible and will help to make the park even safer by deterring antisocial behaviour and those looking to cause trouble at night

CCTV
Gedling Borough Council also says it plans to install CCTV cameras in the park over the next few months after receiving funding

“These new upgrades will ensure the park is even more accessible and will help to make the park even safer by deterring antisocial behaviour, and those looking to cause trouble at night time.

“I’m grateful that through Safer Streets we can bring in additional investment to make our public spaces safer, in addition to the great work already being done by Nottinghamshire Police and local partners such as Gedling Borough Council.”

In addition to the lighting upgrades, the park will also benefit from two new cycle lockers for visitors to the park to store their bicycles thanks to £10,000 in funding provided by the Localities Fund.

Gedling Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Mark Stanley said: “From a policing perspective what I’d really like to emphasise is that members of the public young and old use this park regularly and we know it’s a popular location for people to visit on the weekends.

“We know from speaking to people that it can be quite intimidating to be in the park during those darker nights, and so by improving the existing lighting we hope to reassure the public so that they can continue to use the park and feel even safer.

“A locked area for bicycles is also really helpful for the public. We know that theft of bicycle can cost people a lot of money – they’re not cheap nowadays. So being able to secure your bike and then enjoy the park itself in a well-lit and well covered area will continue to reassure the public.”

Gedling Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder Public Protection, Cllr David Ellis said: “Arnot Hill Park is a Green Flag Park and is very popular; it’s a wonderful place – however at night time it does get incredibly dark due to the current Victorian style lighting.

“We’re going to be improving the lighting so people coming through the park at night can feel even safer.

In addition the new cycle lockers will ensure visitors to the park can safely store  their bikes whilst visiting.”

A previous round of Safer Streets funding in Gedling saw Netherfield and Colwick receive funding to tackle issues on the high street by implementing innovative schemes such as Safer Streets wardens, free home security devices, a Shop Watch radio scheme, and much more.

The action in these specific areas has so far helped reduce house burglary in the area by 57% and vehicle crime by 67%.

A Better You in 2024: Why You Should Spend More Time in a Whirlpool Bath

As we usher in a new year, the pursuit of personal well-being and self-improvement takes centre stage, which is no surprise! In our quest for a better version of ourselves, exploring unconventional yet effective avenues can make all the difference. One such hidden gem in the realm of wellness is the humble whirlpool bath, a luxurious addition to your routine that promises not just relaxation but a myriad of health benefits. Let’s have a look at why you should spend more time in a whirlpool bath in 2024.

The therapeutic power of hydrotherapy

The concept of hydrotherapy, or water-based therapy, has been embraced for centuries across various cultures. In 2024, the whirlpool bath stands out as a modern manifestation of this age-old practice. It combines the benefits of heat, buoyancy, and massage to create an experience beyond mere relaxation. The swirling motion of the water in a whirlpool bath stimulates blood circulation and helps ease tension in muscles and joints.

Stress relief in every bubble

Stress is an ever-present companion in our ever-changing world. Finding effective ways to manage stress is crucial for our mental and physical well-being. A whirlpool bath offers a sanctuary of tranquillity, where the gentle caress of bubbles and warm water creates a calming environment. The release of endorphins during hydrotherapy can contribute to a more positive mood, helping you face the challenges of the day with a renewed sense of vigour.

Muscle recovery and improved sleep

Muscle recovery is paramount whether you’re an athlete pushing your limits or someone dealing with the strains of daily life. The warm water in a whirlpool bath helps soothe aching muscles by promoting blood flow and reducing inflammation, and this not only aids in post-exercise recovery but also contributes to a more restful sleep. As we delve into 2024, prioritising quality sleep is recognised as a cornerstone of overall well-being.

A spa experience at home

Amid hectic schedules, the thought of visiting a spa might seem like a distant dream. However, with a whirlpool bath, you can bring the spa experience right into your home. This saves time and ensures that relaxation is seamlessly woven into your routine. Imagine ending a long day by stepping into your private oasis, allowing the warm water to envelop you and feeling the stresses of the day melt away.

Enhancing circulation for heart health

Cardiovascular health should be a priority as we focus on bettering ourselves in 2024! The regular use of a whirlpool bath has been linked to improved circulation, which is essential for maintaining a healthy heart. The combination of warm water and hydrotherapy promotes blood vessel dilation, reducing strain on the heart and supporting overall cardiovascular well-being.

Mind-body harmony

The mind and body are intricately connected, and achieving harmony between the two is vital for holistic well-being. A whirlpool bath provides an opportunity to create this balance. The sensory experience and the therapeutic effects on muscles and joints foster a profound sense of relaxation that extends to the mind. It’s a moment to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with yourself.

As we embark on a journey towards a better version of ourselves in 2024, integrating the benefits of a whirlpool bath into our lives is a choice worth considering. Beyond the luxury and indulgence, it offers tangible advantages for physical health, mental well-being, and overall rejuvenation.
