Scam VAT letter could cost borough businesses £790

Businesses in Gedling borough are being warned not to respond to a scam letter issued by a German-based business called UK Data Control, asking for details of missing VAT numbers.

The official-looking letter asks for confirmation of VAT numbers and other business details. However, the small print within the letter from the Hamburg-based business confirms that signing and returning the form also commits the signatory to agreeing to pay £790 annually for their details to be published on a website.

Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards are concerned businesses in the borough may consider the letter to be an official communications and sign and return the form leading to demands for payment.

A spokesman for trading standards said: “The letter says that the sender is looking to update VAT registration numbers.

“The first page of the letter gives the impression that this is a free service, but the small print states that by returning the attached the form you are signing up to a £790 p/a advertising contract on a “UK-Data Control portal.”

We have checked the UK-Data Control portal website and have noted that several Nottinghamshire businesses are already listed on it.

We would like to assure Nottinghamshire businesses that the sender is not associated with HMRC or the County Council, and that you have no obligation to provide any information to this company.

If you have received one of these letters and received an invoice please report the matter to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk.  We also suggest you seek legal advice before making any payment.

Burglars target properties in Arnold and Carlton while owners are away on holiday

Nottinghamshire Police has issued a warning to people in the Arnold and Carlton area after burglars targeted properties in both towns while owners were away on holiday.

The break-ins have mainly occurred over the past fortnight and the Woodthorpe and Porchester areas have been particularly affected.

Nottinghamshire Police are currently investigating these offences and would like to hear from anyone with information about the burglaries.

Andrew Berryman, local neighbourhood police inspector for Gedling North and South, said: “Both the Arnold and Carlton areas have experienced a number of dwelling burglaries in the last fortnight and it has been apparent at a number of these attacked addresses that the occupants have been away on holiday.”

He also offered the following advice to those going away on holiday over the next few weeks.

“Please ensure that you protect your property when not at home and particularly when you are away for any length of time.

“Ask a relative or neighbour to visit your address and make it appear as if the address is being used, by drawing the curtains, and switching lights on and off. Ensure that you cancel milk and newspaper deliveries. Timer switches can be inexpensive, and can be used to make the address appear occupied.”

Arnold builders named as UK’s best supplier to top waste management firm

An Arnold building firm are celebrating after being names as top supplier to one of the UK’s biggest waste management companies.

DL Rhodes & Son saw off fierce competition from both national and international competitors to be named as Biffa’s 2015 Supplier of the Year.

The result was announced during Biffa’s Recognition of Excellence Awards, which was held at the Hilton Hotel in Northampton.

Nigel Rhodes, managing director at DL Rhodes & Son and Richard Hancock, director at the building firm were invited to collect the national award, which recognises the supplier that has demonstrated excellence and has directly supported Biffa’s strategic business plans.

The construction specialist has put infrastructure into Biffa’s latest technology, back in March, DL Rhodes landed a £1.5 million contract to redevelop a Biffa waste recycling facility in Barking, Essex and throughout the year has performed better than any of Biffa’s 3000 suppliers.

Nigel added: “It is obviously always nice to be recognised but when you’re a supplier there isn’t much higher praise than being recognised by people within the industry and people who you are supplying to.

“This means that Biffa is happy with our work and we are delighted to have offered a fantastic service, this doesn’t mean we will now take our eyes off the ball, we want to win the award again.”

A man who was found with more than £8,000 worth of drugs has been jailed.

Darrell Anton Edwards, 31, of Perry Barr, Birmingham was sentenced to three years and 10 months for possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Officers initially stopped Edwards in a car on 14 August in Queens Drive, Nottingham. Officers had to force their way into the car when they noticed Edwards throwing a white block out of the window. Edwards was then arrested at the scene.

Officers then carried out a search of the car and found over £3500 in cash.

Later that day, officers carried out a drugs warrant at an address in Balmoral Road, Colwick. A large number of items were recovered in the warrant, including over £1500 cash, three wraps of powder, and three knives with powder on the blade. A number of documents linked to Edwards were recovered from the scene.

The white block was tested and found to be cocaine. Drugs recovered from the Colwick address proved to be heroin and cocaine in separate wraps.

Edwards was subsequently charged with possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and heroin. He pleaded guilty to the offence at Nottingham Crown Court on 16 November 2015.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pearson said: “The work of the officers involved in this case has been fully rewarded with this result.

“I am very pleased to see Edwards receive a jail sentence and it will give him a long time to think about his decisions and actions.

“This result also shows how much we are working to get illegal drugs off our streets, and serves as a warning to other illegal drug users that we will eventually find you and bring you to justice.”

Residents urged to have say on proposals for dance music festival at Colwick Country Park

Residents in Colwick are being invited to have their say on plans for a music festival in a nearby country park next year.

Organisers of dance music festival Detonate have submitted a proposal to hold the two-day festival in Colwick Country Park in May 2016 following the success of last year’s event.

Now Colwick Parish Council are urging residents to have their say on proposals before the deadline of November 26. A  final decision on the application will then be made by the City Council’s Licensing Panel.

Two rogue landlords have been fined over £30,000 after knowledgeable building surveyor students renting their property in Mapperley Park exposed their lack of safety standards to local authorities.

Mr Irfan Tariq and Mrs Sajadah Tariq, of Ringwood Crescent, Wollaton, were found guilty for multiple breaches of safety standards and lack of licensing at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on November 12.

Council authorities were alerted to the property after the group of students raised concerns with Nottingham Trent University’s Student Advice Centre and a Fire Officer. Safer Housing officers then decided to visit the former nursing home at Corporation Oaks in Mapperley Park.

When officers called round to the property, Mrs Tariq was present and stated there was no one living there, although there were belongings relating to tenants including mobile phones and laptops on charge.  Mrs Tariq stated these belongings had been left by former tenants and she was going to get rid of them.

When a warrant was granted and entry gained, the property was found to be occupied by seven international students on the upper floors and five building surveyor students on the ground floor.

There were many contraventions of The Housing Act 2004 and The Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006 which included items of disrepair and management issues such as a live electrical cable protruding out of a kitchen floor and a kitchen fire door removed.  Further breaches include an escape exit door screwed shut, dirty conditions in kitchens, no heating and the fire alarm system was not working.

The Tariqs were both found guilty in their absence. This was Mr Tariq’s second offence for similar Housing Act related offences.

In summing up, the District Judge commented that it was unfortunate for them that the Tariqs had taken on building surveyor students in their final year who had knowledge of building failures and rightly complained of the conditions they were living in.  This was in contrast to the vulnerable international students who were living in worse conditions on the upper floors.  He set the fees as a warning to those who wish to do the same.

Councillor Nicola Heaton, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at Nottingham City Council, said: “The Tariqs were operating a business, and making money from this.  If they had applied for a licence the authorities would have ensured the property was to the correct standard before the property was let out. Instead they chose not to, which left young students vulnerable and in a house that was unsafe and not fit for the private rental market.”

Nottingham City Council is advising people across the borough to avoid wooded areas of parks after a severe weather warning was issued for the region this evening.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for the East Midlands, with west to southwesterly gales and locally severe gales likely to sweep eastwards across the area this evening, including widespread inland lowland gusts of 50-60mph likely and some isolated gusts of up to 70mph.

Older, larger trees in some of the council’s parks are more vulnerable to becoming damaged by strong gales and as a precaution, the council’s advice is to avoid going into heavily wooded areas until the weather is calmer.

Had the Arnold Town management built a brick wall across the half way line today, then they would be spending the night clearing up the debris after all 10 players ran through it.

With injuries, work shifts and illness taking its toll and the second team players being cup tied, manager Andy Ingle only had 10 players to chose from for today’s County Cup match at Mansfiled Hosiery Mills; two of these players had spent the past week in their sick beds.

With a heavy pitch and slope to also contend with, Arnold bossed the first 20 minutes before the home side started to get a hold. Chloe Jordan and Jess Adcock worked well down the left wing but shots were limited to long range efforts. At the other end keeper Emily Hallam swept up any through balls that evaded the defensive trio of Tina and Claire Potter, alongside the experienced Chay Davey.

Chances were still far and few between but there is clearly a partnership developing between strikers Molly Parker and Natasha Leach, the latter having a one on one brilliantly saved by the Mansfield keeper. Captain Jen Lorimer rolled back the years with a performance that can only be described as pure class. She always had time on the ball regardless of how many opponants she had around her, and kept it effectively simple. Beth Polak ran at least two marathons, chasing back or getting forward to  support, which earnt her the nickname of roadrunner by the Arnold bench.

The backs to the wall performance was rewarded with a clean sheet after 90 minutes, the first of the season which was massive for confidence alone. Extra time was always going to be tough as most players were on their last legs. However they gave 30 minutes which clearly amazed the home team. With heavy legs, and the home side able to make three subs it was only a matter of time before Mansfield broke the deadlock, with their forward dinking the ball over the outrushing Emily Hallam. Natasha Leach and Molly Parker still kept the defence on their toes but just able to get the break their running deserved. With three minutes left, the tie was finished as the same forward was able to lift a bouncing ball over the keeper into the empty net.

The Arnold Town 2nd team were also in County Cup action where they faced Ruddington Village Ladies 1st team at Eagle Valley. Despite being 3-0 down at the break Charley Keetley pulled a goal back before experience took a hold and Ruddington finished the game 6-1 winners.

It’s Oscar’s night in Calverton as guests celebrate restaurant relaunch

VIPs, business owners and socialites from across Nottinghamshire gathered last night for an evening of food, drinks and live music to celebrate the official relaunch of Oscar’s Lounge and Kitchen in Calverton.

The revamped bar and restaurant welcomed guests from firms including Fraser Brown, and Sytner and local organisations, Calverton Dental Practice and St Wilford’s School, who mingled in the newly renovated venue on Main Street.

Oscar’s resident musician, Suzi Jary entertained guests with music from Amy Winehouse and Dolly Parton, while guests sampled a selection of tasters from the new seasonal menu.

Managing director at Oscar’s Dominic Hayer said: “The evening was a fantastic celebration and I’m absolutely delighted with the turn out. It was so nice to see so much support from local businesses and residents and some of our guests travelled quite a distance to see our new facilities and sample our hospitality which is fantastic.
