Students in Gedling borough warned off becoming ‘money mules’ for quick cash

Students across Gedling borough are being warned not to be tempted into becoming a money mule by the lure of quick cash.

Scambusters Action Fraud has issued the warning to students across the borough as many are being recruited, sometimes unwittingly, as “mules” to transfer money illegally between bank accounts by fraudsters.

A money mule is someone who is recruited by those needing to launder money obtained illegally. Criminals advertise fake jobs in newspapers and on the internet in a number of ways, usually offering opportunities to make money quickly, in order to lure potential money mule recruits. These adverts can appear in social media posts or by mass email. Some criminals have been targeting potential mules who have posted a CV on an employment website.

Could you be new voice of BT’s speaking clock?

Could someone in Gedling borough be the new voice of BT’s speaking clock?

People across the country are being given the chance to replace the iconic clock’s current voice Sara Mendes da Costa by taking part in a nationwide competition being launched to mark its 80th anniversary.

Today, around 12 million calls are still made to the BT Speaking Clock by dialling 123, especially on Remembrance Day, New Year’s Eve or when the clocks go forwards or back. Even Big Ben is set by the BT Speaking Clock, which is accurate to within 30 microseconds and has been keeping Britain on time, ticking away 24 hours a day, seven days a week since 24 July 1936.

Strawberry cream tea party in Netherfield raises over £3,500 for breast cancer charity

Over 250 people attended a strawberry cream tea party in Netherfield yesterday (21) and helped raise over £3500 for a cancer charity.

The event, which was held at Netherfield Primary School, was organised by Sharon Ellis who arranges the tea parties each year to raise cash for the Breast Cancer Care charity after losing best friend Barbara Perston to the disease.

As well as a delicious strawberry cream tea, guests also enjoyed the Pimms tent, Co-Co Falls chocolate fountain and were entertained throughout the afternoon by soprano singer Lily Taylor-Ward, saxophone player Andy Cahill and magician David Fox.

Sharon managed to put together a team of over 50 volunteers to put on the event which included members of her family, friends and WI she runs in Netherfield.

Forest legend John Robertson announced as guest speaker at Carlton Town Christmas event

John Robertson, the Nottingham Forest double European Cup winner described by Brian Clough as “the Picasso of our game”, has been announced as guest speaker at a Christmas luncheon event at Carlton Town.

Robertson will be entertaining guests with stories from Nottingham Forest’s golden era at the event, which will take place at the Bill Stoked Stadium on Friday, December 9, from 1pm.

Disabled people offered ‘life changing’ grants to help make homes more accessible

Disabled people in the borough are being offered grants of up to £30,000 to cover the cost of adapting their homes to make them more accessible.

Gedling Borough Council has received government cash to provide the grants to residents with disabilities so they can make the changes and remain living independently at home.

The money could go towards ramps, widening doors, adapting or providing suitable washing/bathing or toilet facilities, installing a stair lift or a ‘through the floor’ lift.

The grants are means tested – applicants need to be referred to Gedling Borough Council by an occupational therapist who will assess the individual’s needs, then the council decides if they qualify.

The maximum grant available is £30,000 and residents living in rented properties would require the owner’s permission for any works to be carried out.

Gedling cancer survivor takes to high seas in four-day yachting adventure

An inspirational cancer survivor from Gedling got a taste for life on the ocean after taking part in a four-day yachting adventure.

Rhianna Burrows joined the crew on one of six yachts that sailed around the Solent on the south coast with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

The 11-year-old, who finished cancer treatment back in July 2014 for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, was joined by other young people from across the country who had also battled the disease.

For Rhianna, this was her first time sailing with the Trust.

A charity is to offer support to victims of hate crime in Gedling borough after recent statistics showed an 18% increase rise in offences recorded over the last year.

Government figures showed 52,528 hate crimes were recorded last year in England and Wales, up from 44,471 from the previous year.

Independent charity Victim Support operates a service to hate crime victims in Nottinghamshire, which offers emotional and practical support to help people who have experienced this type of crime.

Rail passengers in Gedling borough see fares rise at double the speed of wages

Rail passengers in Gedling borough have seen fares increased at double the speed of wages since 2010, according to new analysis released today by the TUC and the rail unions’ Action for Rail campaign.

The analysis shows that rail fares have risen by 25% in the last six years, while average weekly earnings have only grown by 12%.

The findings come as the government announced regulated rail fares will increases by 1.9% from January.

As fares for passengers  rise, dividends paid to shareholders of private train companies have risen by 21% in the last year to £222 million.

Gas customers in Gedling borough could get refund if meters were read incorrectly

Residents and businesses across Gedling borough could be due a refund from their energy supplier after industry regulator Ofgem revealed thousands of meters have been read incorrectly.

Ofgem said customers with imperial gas meters that were misread as metric have been overcharged. The exact number of affected customers will not be known before the end of the week.

The energy regulator  said it has now asked all suppliers to investigate if their customers have been affected and urged them to provide their results by August 19.

Energy giant E.on, who employ thousands of people at their offices across Nottinghamshire, raised the issue, which prompted a wider probe into how many people have been over or undercharged across the UK.

In a statement Ofgem said “a very small number of gas customers” had been affected – believed to be around 0.03 per cent of the 27 million customers in the UK.
