Local lad Matt takes the helm at Arnold branch of The Nottingham

Nottingham born and bred Matt Hill is delighted to have landed a key estate agency role in Arnold with The Nottingham.

The 43-year-old is now at the helm of the Arnold branch of Nottingham Estate Agency. And Matt, who has a BSc Hons in Valuation and Estate Management, brings with him 22 years’ experience in both sales and lettings.

Just as importantly, Matt possesses a wealth of knowledge about the area having previously managed branches in the city centre, Beeston, Mapperley and Bingham as well as Long Eaton and Mansfield.

Matt, who lives just 10 minutes from Arnold and plays golf at Calverton, said: “I’m extremely pleased to be part of The Nottingham team and will be drawing on my experience to help people with all their property needs.

Take a look inside Carlton le Willows new state-of-the-art table tennis centre

Two Olympic stars were on hand to put local dignitaries and pupils through their paces at the opening of a new state-of-the-art table tennis centre in Gedling last night (12).

The new centre, which based at Carlton le Willows Academy, officially opened the doors at the special ceremony held to mark its completion.

Six-times national table tennis champion and GB national team coach Alan Cooke joined special invited guests at the event on Monday night where he entertained the audience with an exhibition match again Commonwealth silver medallist and GB Olympian Kelly Sibley.

During the evening, chair of Table Tennis England Sandra Deaton officially opened the £450,000 centre – a flagship project part-funded by Table Tennis England – by cutting the ribbon on a commemorative plaque.

She told the gathered audience: “This centre is a shining example of what can be achieved if everyone works together and I am sure it will be very successful. We thank you Carlton le Willows for sharing the passion we have for our sport and wish you the very best of luck.”

Goodbye Gedling? Vernon Coaker’s seat would disappear if proposed voting boundary changes get go ahead

Gedling could soon disappear as a voting constituency if proposed changes to voting boundaries outlined today get the go ahead.

The seat, currently occupied by  Vernon Coaker MP, would be vanish and the constituency would be spilt between Sherwood and Nottingham East.

Sherwood, which is currently held by Mark Spencer MP, would inherit Arnold and Burton Joyce; Nottingham East, which is held by Chris Leslie MP, would gain Carlton, Colwick, Gedling village and Netherfield.

The changes are being proposed following the Government’s announcement that it wanted to cut the number of constituencies in the UK from 650 to 600.

Mellish RFC Weekend Round-Up

Saturday saw Mellish kick off their Midlands 4 East (North) campaign with a strong win against a plucky Meden Vale side, writes Matt Bright.

After the controlled win in the cup the previous week against Tupton, the game began at a frantic pace with possession changing sides quickly. This allowed Meden Vale to get a foothold in the contest with the matches first three points from the long range boot of their fly half.

With this, Mellish seemed to settle into the game and started to work their structures and this allowed them to put Meden Vale on the back foot, after a kick to the corner and from the resulting line-out Mellish set a good driving maul, which saw No. 8 Dave Mason dart down the blind side to score in the corner. This was followed up shortly after by a nice team try which came from excellent support play from the forwards and was finished off by captain Joe Dawn. Another successful penalty from the Meden Vale fly half made the half time score, Mellish 14 – 6 Meden Vale.

The second half saw a much more focused Mellish performance with TJ Austin scoring shortly after the restart with a well taken try from the base of a breakdown. This was followed by a quick thinking try from scrum half Ross Pickering who showed his footballing skills to score his first of the game.

A couple more penalties from the Meden Vale fly half kept his sides of the scoreboard ticking over. However a well worked move allowed full back Jonathan Fox to make his way through the defence to score Mellish’s fifth try of the afternoon. This was shortly followed by the sixth, which Adam Downie was able to finish after picking up a pass off his bootlaces to score in the corner. Mellish rounded off the day with a great team try which saw the ball pass through 7 pairs of hands to before being rounded off by Vinnie Square for the final try of the afternoon. With the 5 conversions from Ross Pickering the final score stood at Mellish 45 – 12 Meden Vale.

A great start to the season for a Mellish team which has a number of new faces in it and is a positive sign of things to come. This week see’s the side welcome Worksop to the War Memorial Ground for a 3pm KO. All support is welcome

Phishing email scam warning to people in Gedling borough

Phishing email scam warning to people in Gedling borough

Police are warning people in Gedling borough about a phishing email currently in circulation.

The email claims to be from the City of London Police.

The departments that it claims to represent include the ‘Fraud Intelligence Unit’ and the ‘National Fraud Intelligence Bureau’.

The email is titled ‘compensation fund’ and has a letter attachment that claims to be offering financial compensation to victims of fraud. The letter uses the City of London Police logo.

The letter states that in order for compensation to be arranged, the receiver of the email should reply disclosing personal information. It states that HSBC and the South African Reserve Bank have been chosen to handle the compensation claims. All of these claims are false.

The email and letter are fraudulent and should not be replied to.

Gedling borough joins foster carer campaign amid county-wide shortage

A drive to tackle a shortage of foster carers across Nottingham has been launched so more children in the region can be given a safe, family home.

Nottinghamshire County Council currently needs foster homes for 208 children across the county – and just over 100 of those are aged 11 or over.

Councillor Kate Foale, vice-chairman of the Children and Young People Service’s Committee and lead on children’s social care said that the pressure to recruit new foster carers is ongoing: “Finding sufficient numbers of the right carers is a challenge faced by all fostering services.

“In Notts, we are particularly looking for foster carers to look after sibling groups and older children to provide them with a loving, secure home.”

Latest figures from the council reveal that there are 634 children in foster care across Nottinghamshire with 426 fostering households.

“We need foster carers based in Nottinghamshire, who have the right skills and experience to do a job that is so rewarding,” added Coun Foale. “If you are loving, understanding and resilient and would like to make a positive impact on a child’s life, we would very much like to hear from you.”

MATCH REPORT: Holbrook St Michaels 0 Linby CWFC 3

Linby made a return to winning ways this afternoon when they comfortably beat Holbrook St.Michaels at their Holbrook Park ground writes Kieran Booker.

Two first half goals in the space of 4 minutes set Linby on their way before the win was sealed by a Jonathan Jenkinson header with 12 minutes of the game remaining.

 The away side gave debuts to goalkeeper Gary Hickman and striker Lewis Weaver and it was the attacker who helped them off to a positive start. Within two minutes, Linby had already had multiple corners and with their second of the game saw the ball be cleared off the line twice.

 

Young striker Weaver started to create problems for the Holbrook defence with his pace and sharp passing and nearly got himself an early goal but he could only fire wide from outside the box after 19 minutes.

He did help Linby get the opener four minutes later though when he was able to use his pace to meet a long ball down the left flank, he then started to dart towards the box before playing a lovely ball into the path of his captain Aidy Harris who had the simple job of smashing the ball home.

 

Tyler Guy was able to double Linby’s lead four minutes later. The defender was able to use his set piece expertise to curl his free kick from deep on the right side straight into the goal when the ball snuck in at the keeper’s near post. It’s the second time Tyler has been able to score from that position as he put away a replica effort in pre-season against Calverton MW.

Holbrook tried to get an immediate response when they had a couple of chances of their own just after the 30 minute mark. They both fell to Kevin Morrow but the player could only see Gary Hickman smother his first half shot from outside the box before firing over seconds later following pressure from Linby’s defenders.

 

The home side then had their best chance of the half when gifted a freekick on the edge of the box following a foul from Terry Henshaw. Unfortunately for them Dom Hayes could only hit the initial shot into the wall before Sam Williamson fired the deflected ball over when inside the box.

 

Linby have had an issue of holding on to leads this season but they looked determined to hold on to it when they came back out for the second half. They pressed the Holbrook defence repeatedly straight from the kick off with a scattering of corners being separated by numerous stops from the home keeper, Gary Smith.

 

It was the away side who continued to dominate both possession and chances without creating any clear cut opportunities that forced the keeper to move from his spot. They did make the most of one of their corners in the 78th minute though when Tyler Guy was able to swing one to the back post which was met by the towering defender Jonathan Jenkinson who headed home.

Holbrook tried to get an instant response when they went straight on the attack from the restart. Unfortunately for the home side, Jordan Butcher could only fire his shot wide in the game’s last real chance.

An Alex Steadman penalty on the stroke of half time gave Belper Town a 1-0 win against Carlton Town at Stoke Lane, writes Alan Murphy

The Millers however will be kicking themselves for not having won this game having controlled the majority of the match and spurned a host of chances.

Indeed, just like in last week’s goalless draw at Loughborough, Carlton played some fine football in the first two thirds of the field but lacked the cutting edge necessary to cause damage to the opposition at this level. If the players don’t grasp the nettle, and quickly, and start turning their chances into goals, it promises to be another long season.

Manager Wayne Scott made three changes to the side which travelled to Loughborough, with the unavailable Kieron Walker, Jake Wholey and Kevin Lusamba being replaced by Jordan Knight,Antonio Wedderburn and Josh Rae respectively.

Belper included two former Carlton players, Ruben Wiggins-Thomas and Jermaine Hollis.

Carlton were out of the blocks quickest and in just the second minute Wedderbun darted down the right and pulled the ball back to Shaun Rickford whose effort was cleared off the goal line.

Minutes later Danny Gordon advanced into the area and crossed to Romain Graham who appeared to be pulled back as he tried to score from close range but the referee wasn’t interested.

At the other end Kyle Bryant found himself in space but his shot went straight at Jack Steggles.

Hollis then fed Steadman but Lawrence Gorman did well to cut out the chance.

Carlton were starting to have the better of a scrappy encounter and when Daniel Fletcherdelivered a free kick into the area Rickford flicked on to Graham who volleyed high over the bar from just six yards out.

Gordon then beat Bryant before putting over a fierce cross which Rickford missed at the back post with the goal at his mercy. Wedderburn fed the ball to Rae whose shot was comfortably saved by Danny Haystead.

Eric Graves then stopped a Rae run down the left hand side with a deliberate hand ball. Gordon whipped in the free kick to the near post and Rae was first to meet it but lifted the ball over the bar.

With the half in its final minute Belper attacked down the right and when the ball was splayed into the area Rickford and Wiggins-Thomas clashed and both went down. The linesman signalled for a corner and the referee seemed to agree but once both players had been treated by the physios the referee awarded the Nailers a penalty. The Millers were unimpressed but Steadman fired the spot kick into the roof of the net.

The Millers totally dominated the second half. Gorman chipped an early ball into the area and Gerome Palmer manhandled Rickford to the floor but Carlton’s penalty claims were ignored.

Jordan Knight then sent Gordon clear on goal but, in a position in which he has been so lethal in the past, last year’s supporters’ player of the year could only shoot straight at Haystead.

Gordon then sent over a free kick which Rickford headed at goal but Haystead made a decent save.

Another Millers attack saw Rickford cross from the right to the back of the penalty area. Gordon chested the ball excellently but then blasted the volley high over the bar.

Still Carlton attacked and in the final minute a long Gordon throw was cleared as far as Niall Davie whose shot struck a stray Belper arm. A final shout for a home penalty was once again turned down and the Millers suffered another home defeat against the Nailers.

Public urged to ‘dig deep’ to fund life saving treatment for Arnold police officer

The family of a terminally-ill police officer from Arnold is urging people to dig deep to help fund potentially life-saving treatment. 

Sgt Phil Hogg, who has worked for Nottinghamshire Police for 29 years, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July last year and was told that he only had months to live.

Phil, supported by his wife Adele and two children Robert, 26, and Madeleine, 15, was determined to fight the disease and sought further advice from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

He underwent significant surgery towards the end of last year and travels from his home in Arnold every fortnight to receive chemotherapy since December 2015.

Young children in Gedling borough still exceeding sugar recommendation

Children in Gedling borough are consuming more than double the recommended amount of sugar research published today has revealed (9).

But although sugar consumption is on the rise, consumption of sugary drinks has fallen compared to six years ago.

This is according to the latest National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS), published today by Public Health England (PHE).

Children aged 4 to 10 years drank 100mls of sugary drinks on average in 2012 to 2014, a decrease from 130mls/day in 2008 to 2010.

However, sugar makes up 13% of children’s daily calorie intake, while the official recommendation is to limit it to no more than 5%. Worryingly, teenagers continue to consume 3 times the official recommendation for sugar (15%) and adults over twice as much (12%).
