Football club to be recognised for charity efforts at reception with Mayor of Gedling

A football club which recently scooped a national award for their contribution to the community are to be recognised at a reception hosted by the Mayor of Gedling.

Gedling Southbank, which runs 30 teams that all play at grounds across the borough, recently picked up the Charter Standard Community Club award from the FA – a national award which recognises the efforts of clubs that fundraise for local community causes.

Club chairman, Adrian Hall and vice chairman Ken Steele were recently invited to collect the prestigious prize from 1966 World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst at Wembley before kick-off at the Community Shield match between Leicester City and Manchester United.

Now the club are to be rewarded for their efforts closer to home with a reception in their honour being organised at Gedling Borough Council’s Civic Centre in Arnot Hill Park on September 22.

Identities of mystery Bestwood village ‘yarn bombers’ revealed

The identities of the mystery yarn bombers who decorated areas of Bestwood Village earlier this week has been revealed.

Bestwood Village WI confessed to being behind the recent yarn-ageddon on social media after people started to spot their colourful creations dotted around the village over the weekend.

It’s not the first time members have yarn bombed the village and this year they decided to go with a woodland theme to tie-in with their autumn fayre which took place last weekend.

Claire Averill, who is part of the BVWI Craft Committee, told Gedling Eye: “Our members are keen crafters and have yarn bombed the village before. We got permission to decorate the areas around the Dynamo Cafe, where we meet every month, and also the adjacent Winding House this year.

New site to offer support for armed forces personnel in Gedling borough

A new one-stop online shop of support for armed forces personnel in Gedling borough is being launched tomorrow (8) by Nottinghamshire County Council.

The website, www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/supporting-armed-forces highlights some of the ways in which the county council can supporting current and former services personnel and their families.

It also acts as a portal for the many organisations, charities and public services available in the county, including support with combat stress and mental health issues, welfare benefits, finances and debt, housing and property adaptations and training and careers.

Councillor Ian Campbell, armed forces champion at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We hope the new website can provide a valuable resource for current and former members of the armed forces and their families in Nottinghamshire, an important part of the County Council’s commitment under the Community Covenant. It’s also an important guide to what’s available for people who interact with current or former forces personnel, whether that be care workers, councillors, friends or family.

“There are some great support organisations, charities and public services, both regionally and nationally, but it’s not always easy to know where to go and how to access their help.

Charity meal that raises over £1,600 is just the starter for Steven

A charity meal held last week in Colwick has raised a whopping £1,671 for a leading homeless charity.

Steven Summerby organised the event in at the village’s community centre to help boost the total he hopes to raise this year for The Big Issue Foundation.

Over 80 people from the local community, including Mayor of Gedling Sandra Barnes, turned out last Wednesday to enjoy a two-course buffet and entertainment provided by a local school X-Factor winner. They also danced the night away at a 70s disco which took place after the meal and swelled the charity coffers by taking part in an auction.

Steven, who also runs a local catering business, has already started raising money for the cause by pledging to cycle from London to Paris early in 2017.

He plans to start training shortly.

He told Gedling Eye: “All I need to know is stop smoking and the drinking and start training.”

Two successful online communities Henpicked and totally4women, have merged to create one of the UK’s largest, fastest growing websites, giving women over 40 a voice.

Henpicked, which has writers from Arnold and Mapperley, has relaunched this month to incorporate totally4women (t4w), following the sad death of t4w’s founder Carolyn Lazarus after a brief battle with cancer.

Henpicked was originally set up in 2013 by Nottingham-based entrepreneur Deborah Garlick and group of friends, who wanted to provide a hub for women to share advice and find inspiration.

At a similar time, t4w was the brainchild of Carolyn Lazarus, entrepreneur and lawyer from Hereford, whose vision was to offer a community for “women who weren’t born yesterday” and give them a home for sharing information and insights into women’s issues and experiences.

Following Carolyn’s death, the two sites connected through a contributing writer and, as they shared such a common ethos and identity, Deborah felt that it would be tragic for the work of t4w not to continue. So, Deborah worked with Carolyn’s husband, Marc, to continue his wife’s legacy.

Help vote Gedling Country Park into UK top 10

Gedling Borough Council is urging people to back a bid to get Gedling Country Park into a list of the nation’s favourites.

This year, Keep Britain Tidy are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Green Flag Award, and there won’t just be one People’s Choice winner – there will be ten, all voted for by the public.

The voting has now begun and ends on Friday, September 30.

The ten most popular parks and green space in the UK will be announced in October.

Colwick landlord fined £29,000 for renting out property infested with rats

A Colwick landlord has been fined £29,000 for renting out a property in the city centre that was overrun with rats.

The rental property on Alfreton Road was described as being in a ‘filthy and verminous condition with a rat infestation’.

Nottingham HMO Ltd, of Unit C17, Private Road 2, Colwick Industrial Estate, directed by Mr Nazaquat Azam and previously by Mr Yusif McCallum until November 30, 2015, was found guilty of breaching HMO Management Regulations.

They were also found guilty of failing to respond to a demand for information under the Local Government Miscellaneous Provisions Act at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 2.

The Magistrate fined the business £19,000 for failing to comply with a number of Regulations under the Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006, and £10,000 for failure to respond to a Notice requesting information under Section 16 of the Local Government Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1976; the Court also awarded costs of £1450.

League leaders Selston were able to continue the form which won them the league last year when they beat Linby 6-0 earlier today.

An impressive first half from the home side led to Linby being 4-0 down at the break before Elliott Jones and Thomas Widdowson wrapped things up.

Selston thought they had taken the lead after only 3 minutes when Carl Moore smashed the ball into the net only for the linesman to hold his flag up for offside. The home side were ahead only three minutes later though when Sean Gregory was able to rocket home a shot from over 40 yards out. The midfielder was able to latch on to Glenn Guyatt’s clearance to fire the ball back over the goalkeeper’s head.

After having his earlier effort disallowed, Carl Moore was able to grab himself a goal to double his side’s lead with only 10 minutes gone when he scored from a set piece. After being awarded a free kick on the edge of the Linby box, Carl stood up and hit the ball along the floor into the goal keeper’s right side.

Things then looked wrapped up for the home side with only 18 minutes gone when they picked up a third. Sean Gregory was able to time a brilliant ball into the right channel for Kane Hempshall who was then able to calmly slide the ball past the keeper from 12 yards out.

The fourth Selston goal came from a quick break away just before half an hour was played. They were able to react quickly to win the ball back on the half way line through Sean Gregory, he was then able to play in Elliot Jones who charged forward and smashed the ball away.

Despite the game looking over Linby started to look more settled as the half went on. They were able to get good passages of posession without ever really threatening Ball’s goal. Their best chance of the half falling to Troy Smith just before the end, unfortunately the striker could only see his shot fly inches past the post after being played through.

Selston were able to win this division last season and from today’s performance you could see why. They were able to comfortably pass the ball around and linked up well throughout the game.

The second half was more of an even affair with both sides taking turns to control the play. It was Selston who would capitalise when in charge though as they were able to grab themselves another after 67 minutes. Glenn Guyatt was able to initially stop Carl Moore’s effort but unfortunately for the Linby keeper he could only push the ball into the path of Elliott Jones who put the ball into the empty net.

The gloomy weather summed up the mood of Linby’s day and Lewis Saxby would have already been thinking of the full time whistle when Selston grabbed their sixth in the last minute of play. Substitute Joe Riley was able to win the ball back for his side before it fell to Thomas Widdowson, the striker playing the ball under Guyatt to finish things off.

Carlton Town were held to a 0-0 draw at Loughborough Dynamo this afternoon.

Playing into a strong wind in the first half, Danny Gordon had Carlton’s best opportunity of the opening period when he fired wide from inside the area after just five minutes.

Lawrence Gorman twice cleared off the line as Dynamo had the better of the first half. However, Carlton controlled the second period, put the Loughborough defence under sustained pressure but lacked the cutting edge to force any serious saves from Dynamo keeper Liam Sharpe.

The point means the Millers move up to 13th in the table with five points from five games. They return to action next Saturday when Belper Town visit Stoke Lane.
