Suspected distraction burglars thought to have struck again in Carlton

0

A group of males suspected of carrying out a distraction burglary last September in Carlton are thought to have struck again.

Three men pulled up outside a property on Kent Road in Porchester yesterday (12) in a white Ford Transit van with ladders on top.

They told the victim who owned the property that it required urgent roof repair work, which they carried our and took payment for.

Two of the offenders then distracted the victim while the other entered the property and took more cash.

The description of the males matches that of a group which are suspected of carrying out a similar offence in Carlton last September.

Back then it was reported that three white males had called at an elderly man’s house on Westdale Lane claiming his guttering needed clearing.

One of the group then distracted the man while the others entered the property and stole a large quantity of cash.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: “It would appear this group maybe back in the Gedling area. We need to catch these criminals.

“Most tradesman are honest people but a minority let them down.”

One of the men is described as having short brown hair and wearing a green sweatshirt.

The other male is described as being around 30 years old with short grey hair.

It is believed one of the group had an Irish accent.

There is no description for the third male.

Nottinghamshire Police have reminded people to keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable people in the area.

The spokesman said: “Please look out for your neighbours and if you see an elderly or vulnerable neighbour having work done then ask a few polite questions and if anything seems suspicious, try and get details of any vehicles or ask the tradesmen for a business card.”

If you have any information or see anyone matching the description of these males in the area then contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101

Vehicle scam warning to people in Gedling borough

0

Police are warning people in Gedling borough to be cautious when buying vehicles online after a rise in complaints about fraudsters selling fake vehicles.

Scam-busters Action Fraud say fraudsters are advertising the vehicles and machinery as for sale using a number of selling platforms online.

The victims, after communicating via email with the fraudster, will receive a bogus email which purports to be from an established escrow provider (a third party who will keep the payment until the buying and selling parties are both happy with the deal).

These emails are designed to persuade victims to pay upfront, via bank transfer, before visiting the seller to collect the goods.

The emails also claim that the buyer (victim) has a cooling off period to reclaim the payment if they change their mind. This gives victims the false sense of security that their money is being looked after by this trustworthy third party, when in fact it is not and the money has gone straight to the fraudster.

Here’s some tips to protect yourself when buying a vehicle online:

  • When making a large purchase such as a new car or machinery, always meet the seller face to face first and ask to see the goods before transferring any money.
  • If you receive a suspicious email asking for payment, check for spelling, grammar, or any other errors, and check who sent the email. If in doubt, check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller.
  • Contact the third party the fraudsters are purporting to be using to make the transaction. They should be able to confirm whether the email you have received is legitimate or not.
  • False adverts often offer vehicles or machinery for sale well below market value to entice potential victims; always be cautious. If it looks too good to be true then it probably is.

If you have been affected by this, or any other type of fraud, report it to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk, or by calling 0300 123 2040.

The charges follow an incident on June 7, 2017. A police officer saw a vehicle in the Strelley area acting suspiciously and signalled for it to stop but the driver failed to do so.

He was then pursued through Strelley and then Broxtowe.

£1m funding boost to tackle county pothole problem

0

An extra £1m could soon be made available to help tackle pothole problems on the county’s roads.

Nottinghamshire County Council is recommending that an extra £1m is immediately diverted into fixing an extra 19,000 potholes on roads in the region.

Currently the Council spends around £2.5m a year on pothole repairs, which includes £1.17m from the Government’s Pothole Fund, announced in December 2016.

If the funding is given the go ahead, the repair work could be completed before next March.

The extra cash is from money Nottinghamshire County Council saved in the last financial year.

Councillor Richard Jackson, chairman of the council’s Finance and Major Contracts Committee, said: “The message we continually hear from local people is that a lack of investment in the road network across the county over the last few years has led to them deteriorating quite badly in some areas.

“This extra money will boost our budget for road repairs by around 30%, which is a major statement of intent by the new administration.

“The £1m we’ve identified is from underspent budgets in 2016/17, which means it won’t affect spending in other areas. But rather than that money disappearing into reserves, we think it’s important that we use it to reinvest in our neglected road network.

“Now that we’ve been able to identify the funding, colleagues in the Highways Department and members of the Communities and Place Committee will draw up the detailed plans about how and where the money will be spent so that we get maximum value for our investment.

“Motorists can continue to play a really important role in helping us identify the roads in greatest need of repair by reporting them on our website or with their local county councillor.”

Nottinghamshire County Council is responsible for maintaining around 2,600 miles of highway.

You can report a pothole on Nottinghamshire County Council’s website at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/potholes

Mapperley community will unite for Great Get Together

0

The life of murdered Labour MP Jo Cox is to be remembered by the community of Mapperley when they host their Great Get Together event this Saturday.

The 41-year-old died on June 16 last year after being shot and stabbed multiple times by Thomas Mair following a meeting in her Batley and Spen constituency.

In memory of her life, parties are being held across the country.

The ‘Great Get Together’ events aim to bring people from different communities across Britain to celebrate what they have in common rather than what divides them.

The Mapperley event is being held at the recently rescued Haywood Road Community Centre, which had been up for sale but is now run by a team of local volunteers.

A fun packed afternoon is planned with live music and entertainment from local groups, as well as a great selection of ‘join-in’ activities from Thai Chi to dance and also a wide range of ‘make n take’ crafting activities for all ages.

Visitors can either enjoy their picnic sitting on bowling green and listening to local DJ Hemulen Soundz or take part in one of the many workshop and activities on offer.

Maria Narducci is one of the volunteers who helps manage the community centre.

She said: “The idea to join in and organise a Mapperley Great Get Together came from three local mums who wanted to help commemorate Jo Cox.

“They are also members of the Haywood Road Community Centre committee and the rest of the committee also wanted to help and have worked to create a fun-packed, Mapperley focused event.

  • The event will take place on Saturday (17) at Haywood Road Community Centre between 12 noon and 4pm.
