Voters in Gedling borough can still have their say in May with Covid-safe local elections set to get go ahead

Plans are being drawn up designed to make local elections safer in Gedling borough this May.

Last year, local elections were put on hold until 2021, meaning more will be held this year than had initially been planned.

It had been mooted that elections this year be delayed again, to decrease likelihood of people becoming infected, with numerous people entering the same buildings to vote.

But the Government has said it plans to hold the votes as planned, and councils have said they are stepping up preparations to make them ‘covid-secure’.

If the plans do go ahead, there will be the four-yearly elections to Nottinghamshire County Council – which were always due to be held this year.

Police and crime commissioner elections, due to be held last year, will also be rolled over to this year.

Nottinghamshire County Council is currently run by a Conservative-led coalition, with Labour as the second-largest party.

The police and crime commissioner is currently Labour’s Paddy Tipping, with the Conservatives coming in second place last time round.

Both elections are due to be held on Thursday, May 6.

Elections to Nottingham City Council and district and borough councils are not due to be held until 2023.

Government minister Chloe Smith said it was important for elections to go ahead, and the preparations were well under way.

Speaking to the House of Commons, she said: “Safe and secure elections are the cornerstone of any democracy, and Parliament’s decision … is that these polls should go ahead in May.

“Due to the pandemic, many of these elections have already been delayed by a year, but voters have a right to be heard and to decide who governs them.

“Given the situation, however, we are … keeping this position under review.

“Any change would require very careful consideration, including by this House, and would need to be based on robust evidence. There should be a high bar for any delay.

“I remind the House that we have already seen polls go ahead despite coronavirus, in this country—for example, council elections in Edinburgh and Aberdeen—and internationally, with other countries holding general elections. Since the announcement of the postponement of the 2020 elections, we have been working towards holding them in a covid-secure manner, and we will put in place a strong set of measures to support this.

“Voters have a choice as to how they participate in elections—at the polling station, by proxy or by post.

“We want to maintain that choice, but we recognise that the pandemic may change people’s needs and preferences. We actively encourage anybody who is shielding or who would prefer not to attend a polling station to apply for an absent vote instead of going in person.

“We will bring forward additional measures to support absent voting, including extending the ability to appoint a proxy, so that anybody who might be affected by covid-19 in the days before the poll is still able to make their voice heard.”

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire County Council said: “While the elections are some time away, we’re already making plans to help you stay safe while casting your votes in Gedling

“There are a number of ways to have your say in the elections – you can vote in a polling station, by post, or by appointing someone you trust to vote on your behalf, which is known as a proxy vote.

“The elections are an opportunity to make your voice heard and have a say on who represents you on issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in

Captain Sir Tom Moore: People in Gedling urged to join national clap at 6pm

1

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has this afternoon urged people across the country to join in a national clap for Captain Sir Tom Moore at 6pm tonight (February 3).

The prime minister told the House of Commons that Captain Tom ‘dedicated his life to others’.

“We all now have the opportunity to show our appreciation for him and all that he stood for and believed in, ” he said.

“That is why I encourage everyone to join in a national clap for Captain Tom and all those health workers for whom he raised money at 6pm this evening.”

The Second World War veteran died yesterday at the age of 100 after capturing the hearts of Britain in the early days of the pandemic when he raised more than £30m for the NHS.

The country has held a national applause before, with a weekly event for front-line NHS staff and other key workers running for 10 weeks during the UK’s first lockdown.

Before Prime Minister’s Questions earlier, the House of Commons held a one-minute silence in memory of Capt Sir Tom and those who have lost their lives as a result of the pandemic.

The technology is available in more than 40 languages and can be used anywhere in the world.

Inspector Chris Pearson’s latest update on policing activities across Gedling borough during January

Inspector Chris Pearson leads the Gedling Neighbourhood Policing team which helps crack crime across the borough.

Here’s his latest update on progress his team made in January…

This year has got off to a busy start with the Gedling borough teams continuing their focus on drug supply, residential burglary and speeding. The current policing priorities for Gedling borough will remain until the end of March 2021.

Drug Supply

Work has continued to tackle the supply and use of controlled drugs.

On January 19, officers from Operation Reacher carried out a warrant in Jermyn Drive, Bestwood. A 34-year-old man was arrested and officers recovered a small amount of controlled drugs and counterfeit bank notes.

PICTURED: Cannabis discovered at a property in Carlton

On January 20, I joined officers from the Carlton neighbourhood team in carrying out a drugs warrant at an address on Cavendish Road, Carlton. A large quantity of class B drugs (cannabis) was recovered from the address and had been drying out in the roof space ready for distribution on the streets. This was seized and will now be destroyed. The warrant was a continuation of ‘Operation Thistle’ which started back in early 2020 and is designed to tackle the supply of controlled drugs in the Netherfield and Carlton areas. Around 50 plants were seized in total and a 50 year old female has been interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

A cannabis grow was also seized from an address on Flatts Lane, Calverton following an incident on the morning of January 28. Two male have been arrested and a large quantity of cannabis seized for destruction. The incident came about following a report of a burglary at the address and is a reminder of the damage that drug supply and use can do in our communities. Our work around this will continue.

Burglary

A number of burglary investigations have taken place this month.

On the morning of January 7, we received a report that a mobility scooter had been stolen from an outbuilding on Smithy Crescent, Arnold. A 36-year-old man has been arrested in relation to this burglary and Detectives are investigating the circumstances.

On January 17, officers responded to reports of an intruder alarm at Homebase in Daybrook. Following a speedy response a 36-year-old male was found leaving the site and arrested on suspicion of burglary. He has now been charged and remanded in custody.

In the early hours of January 17, we received reports of an attempted burglary on Rowland Avenue, Mapperley whereby offenders tried to gain entry to a property by damaging the door lock. A short time later two males were seen trying house doors on Bailey Close in Daybrook. In response to this the Operation Reacher team have started a number of late night operations to target offending.

The team carried out proactive operations last week with Neighbourhood Policing and Special Constable colleagues. This resulted in a number of vehicle stops with three vehicles seized. A number of stop/searches were carried out and a driver arrested for failing a roadside breath test. We will continue to take a proactive approach to overnight offending and I would encourage the reporting of any suspicious incidents.

Police patrols in Gedling
PICTURED: Police carry out increased patrols across Gedling (PICTURE: Notts Police)

Speeding

We have continued our work around speeding following feedback from members of the public.

This month speeding operations have been carried out in Southdale Road, Carlton with seven drivers issued with Traffic Offence Reports for driving with excessive speed. The same activity has taken place on Nottingham Road, Burton Joyce and in the rural north villages of Ravenshead and Linby with activity on Longdale Lane and Main Road. We will continue to visit our villages and we are being supported by the forces safety camera team.

Significant Arrest

Moving on I wanted to touch on the arrest of Ambrose O’Neill (42 Years) who was found guilty of a serious robbery in Leicestershire around 13 years ago.

O’Neill was sentenced to eight years imprisonment in his absence having failed to appear at court and had never served any of his sentence. O’Neill had links to the Arnold area but had not been seen since and local officers made it their mission to track him down so that he could serve his sentence. The team including PC James Gill carried out a number of lengthy, complex enquiries to try and locate O’Neill.

PC Gill and other colleagues from Rota 3 Response and the wider Gedling team even worked in their own time to follow up on the enquiries to find him.

Finally on the morning of January 22, O’Neill was arrested at an address in Lincolnshire. He was taken to prison and will now serve his sentence.

I’d like to thank PC Gill and the wider Gedling officers for their hard work and determination in bringing O’Neill to justice. It’s a reminder of the great work that happens every day in policing and I’m really pleased that O’Neill will now serve his sentence.

Operation Reacher

The Gedling Reacher team is now a year old and Sergeant Matt Sisson and the team have made a significant contribution to policing in Gedling.

Armed with the latest ANPR technology they have been involved in a huge number of arrests and searches. So far the team have made 141 arrests, conducted 38 warrants and seized £255,000 in suspected criminal money. Alongside that, 56 illegal vehicles have been removed from the road and 230 stop searches conducted.

The team have also taken a proactive role in community engagement linked to the COVID19 pandemic and recently ensured the safe delivery of bottles of water to the local vaccination centre. The bottles were kindly donated by Morrison’s in Netherfield and were given to the staff and volunteers at the vaccination centre.

Special Constables

Our volunteers have been out in force this month and have been supporting the neighbourhood policing team with the policing of hotspot locations across the area.

The team give up a huge amount of their own personal time to help police the Gedling Borough at the weekends and it is hugely appreciated by us all.

This month the team have been responsible for arresting drivers for failing roadside breath tests and have seized two vehicles being driven without the correct insurance.

The team are also involved in the policing of the Coronavirus Regulations across Gedling. The team is due to grow later this year and I look forward to welcoming our new volunteers.

Coronavirus

We continue to police the Coronavirus Regulations across Gedling and are working closely with our partners at Gedling Borough Council.

We are continuing to follow the 4E’s approach to this in terms of Engage, Explain, Encourage and Enforce.

The majority of people are still following the government instruction to stay at home in order to protect the NHS and save lives. Sadly we have been forced to issue a number of fixed penalty notices across Gedling in relation to parties and other now illegal gatherings.

Whilst we will always be proportionate in our response, the regulations are clear and we have a responsibility to ensure the safety of the wider public. With that in mind we will continue to proactively police the regulations and we are working closely with partners to identify those that should be self-isolating due to positive tests.

We are deploying additional officers to help with the policing of COVID19 and will always deal with reports of parties or those failing to self-isolate within the regulations. I’d ask that you follow the regulations to save lives and please seek advice if you have any concerns.

WARNING: Don’t reply to these texts from fraudsters – it could cost you £20 each time

Telephone Scams

Finally I know that nationally there has been an increase in telephone scams linked to COVID19 and the NHS with some victims receiving calls and text messages claiming to be from the NHS, GP Surgery’s or even the World Health Organisation (WHO). The organisations will not ask for any financial information from you and the regulator OFCOM have put together a useful website with advice around preventing this type of crime.

The full advice can be found here at https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/latest/features-and-news/coronavirus-scam-calls-and-texts

Plans lodged for micropub which could become a ‘community hub’ in Carlton Square

A new community micropub could soon be coming to Carlton Square.

Plans were lodged with Gedling Borough Council last month to convert a former hairdressers at the shopping centre into a new venue.

In a planning statement to Gedling Borough Council, the applicant said:”We plan to offer traditional pub games and quizzes and it will act as a community hub, with a strong focus on local services for local people – which is even more important when people return to the suburbs after lockdown and more people are working from home.

“There is in any event sound justification for bringing this unit into active use, to add vibrancy and vitality – a recognised local concern.

INVESTMENT: An artist’s impression of the revamped Carlton Square

“It is hoped the council warmly welcomes this proposal to attract spending footfall to the centre which has had significant public resources spent recently, with which this proposal will help justify.”

As well as a hairdressers, the property at 17, Carlton Square had also been a takeaway.

The new venture could benefit from plans to revamp Carlton Square, which were revealed last year.

Changes planned include a new entrance to the car park from Burton Road.

There will also be a new car parking layout including identified spaces for electric vehicle points and improved disabled parking spaces in the southern car park.

New planting and boundary treatments will be added along with new paving and improved access between the car park and shopping area.

There will be a revised siting of payment machines and lighting too.

A decision will be made on the plans by Gedling Borough Council during the spring.

Man in hospital after alleged hit and run outside his home in Stoke Bardolph

A man is in hospital with head injuries after a suspected hit and run outside his home in Stoke Bardolph.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or altering.

The man was found injured near his home after he left the house to investigate a disturbance but didn’t return.

Officers have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and failing to stop at the scene of an accident following the incident in Kingfisher Road, Stoke Bardolph, just before 8.10pm yesterday (February 1, 2021).

PC Chris Archer, who is investigating the incident, said: “This is a very disturbing report of an incident that has left a man in hospital with head injuries.

“We would reassure people that we are doing everything we can to piece together what happened and what led to this reported incident.

“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and we would ask anyone with any information to get in touch.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 706 of 1 February 2021.

Gedling Borough Council warns people not to fall for latest tax phone scam

Gedling Borough Council has issued a warning to residents about the latest scam doing the rounds.

The local authority said it has been informed that people in the borough have been receiving scam calls from fraudsters claiming to be from the council.

The caller claims they are ringing about council tax and then ask for bank details to arrange for payments to be made.

A spokesman for Gedling Borough Council said: “We have been alerted that somebody is calling people claiming to be from Gedling Borough Council and asking for bank details. This is a scam. The council will not ring for your bank details. Please don’t give them out to any callers.”

Action Fraud is offering the following advice to people in a bid to help stop them falling for scams.

A spokesman said: “Do not give any personal information (name, address, bank details, email or phone number) to organisations or people before verifying their credentials.

“Always question unsolicited calls, texts or emails requesting your personal or financial information (name, address, bank details, email or phone number). Instead, contact the company directly using a known email or phone number.”

“Genuine banks, or other trusted organisations, won’t pressure you into making a financial transaction, if something feels wrong then it’s usually right to question it.”
