Murder investigation launched following death of woman in Mapperley

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a woman in Mapperley.

Police were called to an address in Westdale Lane West at 10.07pm last night (21) following concerns for a person’s safety.

Emergency services attended and a woman, in her twenties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is now being treated as a murder investigation, and our detectives are urging witnesses to come forward with any information they may have.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Scenes remain in place at Westdale Lane West and Woodborough Road.

Detective Inspector Stuart Barson, who is overseeing the investigation, said: “Our deepest condolences are with the woman’s family and friends at this difficult time, and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

“A team of detectives are working at pace to progress this investigation and we are urging anyone who was in the area before, during, and after the incident – or anyone who may have recorded CCTV, dash-cam or mobile phone footage – to please get in touch.

“Officers will be carrying out additional patrols in the area and residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area while our inquiries continue.

“I’d like to reassure residents that we believe this is an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public.”

Gedling borough braced for heavy wind and rain as Met Office issues yellow warning

Two weather warnings for rain and wind have been issued for the East Midlands and Gedling borough residents are now bracing themselves

The Met Office has put yellow alerts in place for Thursday (October 21) from 12am until just before midnight on Friday.

Gedling borough has been included in both alerts, with gusts of up to 55mph expected.

Heavy rainfall is expected on Wednesday evening, with up 50mm in some areas by early Thursday morning.

The British forecaster wrote in a post on X: “Strong winds may cause travel disruption and some damage across parts of England during Thursday.

“A powerful jet stream will drive a deep low-pressure system across the UK bringing heavy rain and strong winds to many areas.”

The forecaster warned strong winds may lead to power cuts, transport disruption and damage to buildings with a small chance of injuries and danger to life caused by large waves and beach material being thrown on to seafronts and coastal roads.

‘It was such a joy to celebrate milestone birthday with her’: Arnold care home resident Doreen celebrates 103rd birthday

Residents and staff at Coppice Lodge Care Home in Arnold have been celebrating Doreen’s 103rd birthday with afternoon tea, flowers and cards from friends and family.

The festivities took place in the care home’s beautifully decorated tearoom, complete with colourful balloons and cheerful birthday banners.

Doreen Berridge was joined by friends, family and residents in the milestone birthday celebrations – filling the room with laughter, music, and smile.

Doreen received an abundance of flowers and heartfelt cards, which brightened her day even more. Guests enjoyed a delicious selection of birthday cakes and cupcakes, lovingly prepared for the occasion.

The tea was served in partnership with the home’s regular ‘Talkin’ Tables’ event, which takes place every Thursday from 3–4pm. The weekly session welcomes members of the community to join us for friendly conversation, homemade cake, and a freshly brewed tea or coffee.

Angela Allen, Front of House Manager at HC-One’s Coppice Lodge Care Home, said: “It was such a joy to celebrate Doreen’s 103rd birthday with her. She’s a truly remarkable lady who brings so much happiness to everyone here at Coppice Lodge. Seeing her surrounded by her friends, family, and our residents, all enjoying the afternoon tea together, was just wonderful.

“We’re so proud to be part of these special moments that mean so much to our residents.”

BREAKING: Police respond to incident on Westdale Lane

Police have responded to an incident on Westdale Lane overnight (Wednesday, October 22).

Several officers and police vehicles were seen at Westdale Lane East iand a cordon is in place outside Mapperley Booze off licence

It has been reported forensic officers are on the scene.

Nottinghamshire Police have yet to disclose why were at the two locations.

A spokesman said: “There are no threats to the wider public”.

Residents in Carlton and Netherfield took to social media overnight to say they had heard police helicopters and drones circling over the towns during the early hours.

Westdale Lane was closed by police overnight but has now been reopened.

Nottingham City Transport confirmed their buses are now using the road again after earlier warning it was off limits.

A spokesperson said: “Lilac 25/B and Sky Blue 60 have returned to normal route through Gedling and along Westdale Lane following last night’s incident.”

The Co-op is inviting people based in Arnold to come together and share their views on what more could be done to help their community thrive.

The event – hosted at the Co-op Food store on Beckhampton Road, 12pm on Wednesday, October 29 – will offer a chance to exchange ideas and discuss how co-operation can help revitalise the local economy and strengthen community spirit.  

Part of Co-op’s On Your Corner, In Your Corner campaign, the event will include refreshments and activities designed to spark conversations about the role small businesses play in the neighbourhoods they serve.

BURTON JOYCE: Spook-tacular market planned in aid of cat rescue charity

A Hallowe’en-themed market is taking place this weekend at Burton Joyce & Bulcote Village Hall in aid of a local cat rescue charity.

The SpookCATular Market Event is taking place on Sunday, October 26 between 11am-3pm and has been organised by Meow and Furever Cat Rescue.

There will be more than 20 stalls selling a range of items including Wax Melts, Highland Cow Items, Pick n Mix Toys, Crochet Items, Beauty Products, Rare Vinyl Records, Antiques, Halloween Goodies, Ranges of Giftware, Toys, Games and so much more including Magnolia Honey and Pakora!

The Vets4Pets team will be on hand to offer pet advice and organisers hope to be joined by Pablo Horse Sanctuary.

The hall’s kitchen will be open selling breakfast rolls as well as serving tea, coffee and hot chocolate during the event.

Gedling borough residents get chance to quiz police chief about crime concerns

Residents are being given the chance to quiz Nottinghamshire Police’s current Chief Constable about serious violence, knife crime, and road safety in Gedling borough.

Now’s your chance when the Accountability Board meets next month.

The Board is a public forum where Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden holds Temporary Chief Constable Steve Cooper to account for the performance of Nottinghamshire Police.

They will meet on Tuesday, November 12.

The public can help shape police priorities, raise concerns, and hear how the force is tackling key issues that affect our community during the meeting of the Board.

Residents are now being invited to send in a short video question (maximum one minute) to mediaopcc@notts.police.uk by Monday, October 28. 

Contributors are being asked to start their video with the following line: “My name is (first name) and I live in (location). My question for the Chief Constable on serious violence/knife crime/road safety is…” 

A police spokesman said: “Due to time restraints, we won’t be able to feature all questions – but we’ll aim to include a balanced selection that reflects the key themes raised by the public.  

“Once answered, we will post the Chief Constable’s response to our social media pages, to see an example of how this works in practice, you can watch the video linked HERE. 

“This is your chance to be part of the conversation and help us create a safer Nottinghamshire for all.”

Nottingham Forest confirm Sean Dyche as new manager

Nottingham Forest has appointed Sean Dyche as the club’s new Head Coach following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou over the weekend.

The club announced Dyche’s appointment in a statement, reading: “Nottingham Forest is delighted to confirm the appointment of Sean Dyche as the Club’s new Head Coach, following a thorough recruitment process led by Global Head of Football, Edu Gaspar, and Global Technical Director, George Syrianos.

The former Forest youth player joins the Club on a contract running until the summer of 2027 and will take charge of his first match on Thursday night as The Reds take on FC Porto in the Europa League.

Dyche will be joined by his experienced coaching team of Ian Woan and Steve Stone — both former Nottingham Forest players who together made more than 400 appearances for the club during the 1990s.

Evangelos Marinakis had considered several candidates Roberto Mancini and Marco Silva before appointing Dyche.

Sky Sports had been reporting that Marinakis had been keen on Silva, who managed his Olympiacos team, but Forest would struggle to pay compensation for any new manager right now because of their PSR restrictions.

Postecoglou became the first manager in the club’s history to win none of his first eight games.
