Gedling WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood’s title fight against Mauricio Lara rescheduled for February 18 at Motorpoint Arena

Gedling boxer Leigh Wood will put his WBA Featherweight World Title on the line against big-punching Mexican Mauricio Lara next month at Motorpoint Arena.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Heard released the news of the fight on Twitter saying ‘IT’S ON!! Get ready for absolute mayhem on Feb 18′

Wood also confirmed the news of the fight on his Facebook page, writing: ‘Second defence of my world title coming right up! 18th of Feb, Back in #NOTTINGHAM Back at the Arena’

Lara (25-2-1, 18 KOs) has been waiting patiently for his shot at Wood after their eagerly anticipated September 24 fight was postponed following a torn bicep suffered by Wood in sparring, but the Featherweight KO artist finally gets his dream World Title opportunity next month.

Lara is well-known on UK shores after he floored and ruthlessly finished Josh Warrington in a sensational upset behind closed doors at The SSE Arena, Wembley in February 2021, ending the IBF Featherweight World Champion’s unbeaten record.

He rematched Warrington in front of a sold-out Headingley Stadium in Leeds seven months later, but a nasty cut over the left eye of the Mexican in round two caused by an accidental clash of heads resulted in the contest ending in a technical draw.

The power-punching 24-year-old blitzed Emilio Sanchez in three rounds in March 2022 on the undercard of Roman Gonzalez vs. Julio Cesar Martinez before stopping Jose Sanmartin in three in another destructive show of brute force to put the 126lbs division on notice.

“Mauricio Lara has made things personal between us with the disrespect he showed me regarding my injury and my country,” said Wood. “I’m going to show him what I’m all about. See you on February 18 Nottingham – And Still!”

“I have been waiting for this opportunity for 2 years and I am not going to waste it,” said Lara. “In February 2021 I beat Warrington in England, now in 2023 I will do the same with Wood. The WBA 126lbs World Title goes to Mexico, that I promised to my daughter, my family, my team and to my whole country. Your time has come Leigh Wood, no “injury” can save you now from this.”

“Quite simply this is a fight that you have to watch through your fingers,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “After the drama of the Conlan fight last March, Leigh Wood is about to bring another night of drama to the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham against the brutal, fearless and much avoided Mauricio Lara. This fight leads Leigh to the City Ground in the summer but first get ready for an epic main event and all action card as we gear up for another FOTY contender in Nottingham on Feb 18.”

“What a fight this is to kick off the Matchroom UK schedule in 2023,” said Joe Markowski, CEO DAZN North America. “Both Wood and Lara are incapable of being involved in anything other than brutal, toe to toe, edge of your seat fights and I for one cannot wait for February 18. Watch this barnstormer live and exclusive on DAZN.”

General Sale tickets can be purchased via Motorpoint Arena Nottingham from midday on Thursday January 12.

New Netherfield gym will provide a ‘no-judgement space’ for people to get fit and healthy

The owner of a new gym opening in Netherfield next week said he wants to create a no-judgement space where local people can come and get fit, have fun and get healthy.

TBH Bootcamps gym opens next week and will be based in an old car showroom on Victoria Road next to Carlton Station.

It is being run by Tom Buckle, who said wants to cater for men and women that don’t feel like the gym is for them but want to get back into fitness and a regular exercise routine.

Mr Buckle told Gedling Eye: “TBH Bootcamps aims to be a no-judgement space to come and get fit, have fun and get involved in an incredible community.

“Running various Bootcamps sessions, including the Heart Rate Bootcamp, Hybrid Bootcamp and Build Bootcamp, there will be sessions to suit everyone, no matter their level of fitness.

“Bootcamp sessions are all coached by personal trainers who are dedicated to making the workouts beneficial for the individual.

He added: “Exercises can be adjusted to suit fitness levels, goals and any areas of weakness. This hands-on approach ensures clients get the most out of their workout, building up their fitness and, importantly, confidence.

TBH Bootcamps opens on January 16.

MATCH REPORT: Holwell Sports FC 1 – 3 Gedling Miners Welfare FC

UCL Divison 1

January 7, 2023

Gedling earn their first win of 2023 with victory at Holwell.

The visitors were looking for a response after crashing out of the Notts Senior Cup and inside 2 minutes they had a chance to go in front, Jahren Barrow slipped in Paolo Piliero down the left who crossed for Jack Jepson but he could only scuff his effort wide from 12 yards.

Barely a minute later the visitors spurned another chance, a high ball was not delt with by the hosts backline and Courtney Hastings hit a sweet volley which was saved by the Holwell keeper.

On 12 minutes Holwell had their best chance of the half, a quick break; left the Gedling backline outnumbered and a cross from the left was headed wide of Louis Richardson’s left-hand post.

But on 21 minutes the visitors went infront, Ryan Tait headed the ball to Piliero in the area who beat his man before slotting a left footed effort into the bottom left corner from 10 yards out for his 2nd goal of the season.

Just 3 minutes later it got even better for Gedling, Hastings and captain Josh Thornton linked well before Thornton whipped in a superb cross Barrow hit first time into the top right corner from 10 yards for his 3rd of the season and to give the miners a deserved 0-2 lead at half time.

Holwell, who just came of the back of a 2-1 victory earlier in the week got back into the game just 7 minutes into the 2nd half, Tom Pope found some room 25 yards from goal and his effort hit Adrian Hawes and looped over the helpless Richardson and into the bottom left corner for Pope’s 10th of the season.

Gedling did not let this hinder them and on 65 minutes they almost extended their lead, the hosts keeper made a mess of a clearance and the ball fell to Piliero 25 yards from goal and his effort beat the keeper but the hosts skipper headed off the line and Jepson’s follow up was well saved.

But on 77 minutes the miners did have their 2-goal lead back, Thornton whipped in a corner which Kieran Harrison headed against the bar but Jepson was on hand to put the ball over the line for his 9th of the season and to steer Gedling to deserved 3-1 win.

MATCH REPORT: Carlton Town 0 – 2 Grimsby Borough

NPL First Division East

January 7, 2023

Second half goals from Brody Robertson and Edwin Essel condemned Carlton Town to a 2-0 home defeat against Grimsby Borough.

The defeat dealt a damaging blow to Carlton’s hopes of climbing away from the relegation places.  The Millers find themselves in the bottom four with just 19 points from 20 games, three points adrift of safety.  Carlton still have 18 games left to pull out of trouble but with only two home wins so far this campaign, it’s clear that significant improvement is needed if the team are to get the points needed to climb the table.

Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey made one change to the side which had drawn at Long Eaton last time out with Kyle Dixon replacing the injured Niall Davie.

Grimsby arrived in a rich vein of form which included a 5-2 win against Bridlington last time out.

On a soft pitch which had done well to soak up recent heavy rain, neither side really imposed themselves in the first half.

Carlton started the better and moved the ball around neatly, but they didn’t make Liam Higton in the Borough goal do a great deal.  Likewise, at the other end, Grimsby were industrious enough but Carlton’s back line dealt comfortably with their threat.

The first real chance of the game came on 36 minutes when a quick Grimsby counter attack saw Jack Barlow in time and space on the left edge of the penalty area.  His first shot was blocked but the rebound dropped kindly and he had a gaping half of the goal to slot the ball into, only to miscue his effort horribly wide of target.

The Millers responded and Dixon was sent clear into the left side of the penalty area moments later.  He really should have shot but instead elected to try and cross to Nat Watson.  Watson went down claiming a push from Tom Sawyer but the officials weren’t interested and the chance was gone.

Essel drew an excellent save from Mikey Emery on the stroke of half time with Dean Freeman clearing up the loose ball.

The Millers began the second half on the front foot and when Niall Hylton played the ball forward to Watson, the ex-Ilkeston man beat two defenders and hit a fine shot which drew an excellent save from Higton, palming the ball away to his left.

From the resulting Lawrence Gorman corner Kyle Tomlin headed over at the near post.

On 56 minutes Grimsby took the lead.  An attack down the left saw Jack Debnam’s shot blocked.  The loose ball fell to Robertson in space and he took full advantage, steering the ball into the corner of the net.

Carlton responded and a fine run by Hylton down the left wing saw him send over a dangerous cross but Tomlin just failed to get on the end of it.

Borough were still a threat and Dan Brown had to clear off the line from Essel.

With 15 minutes remaining substitute Alex Howes hit a snap shot just wide of target after Grimsby failed to clear a cross into the box.

The visitors should have extended their lead minutes later when an unmarked Debnam headed wide from close range.  But it mattered not as Borough sealed the win with six minutes remaining.  The excellent Robertson sped away down the right before hitting a fine cross which Essel duly converted at the far post.

Indeed it could have been worse as Essel hit the inside of the post in added time before the referee put Carlton out of their misery.

Carlton Town: M Emery, L Gorman, N Hylton, D Freeman, D Brown, J Holmes (L Durow 61), K Dixon (D Elliott 61), K Sargent (A Howes 71), B Wells, N Watson, K Tomlin. Unused substitutes: R Stainsby, A O’Connor

Goals: Brody Robertson 56, Edwin Essel 84

TONY CAVE: Passenger number boost for Carlton Station

NETHERFIELD

The new timetable came into operation on 11th December, but there are no alterations apart from the 08.32 to Liverpool on Saturdays now departs at 08.29.

CARLTON

A scrutiny of the new timetable found 2 trains slightly retimed, otherwise it’s the timetable you’ve got used to. So, the 17.52 Nottingham to Newark now departs at 17.54 and arrives at Carlton 18.00. The 18.27 to Nottingham departs at 18.28. Roth Mondays to Fridays. No changes on Saturdays and Sundays.

BOTH STATIONS.

Ticket Smart Kiosks were installed in November, and they do look smart. Most types of ticket can be purchased including Advanced, if you aren’t travelling immediately and are fairly flexible when you travel. Cards or Apple Pay/Google Pay is accepted, but not cash. They are user-friendly and offer real-time information. When I looked at the screen on a strike day it gave the useful information ‘There are no trains at this station today•. You can still purchase tickets on the train at both stations. At Carlton, the machine is on platform 2

(Newark side) as apparently this was the easiest location with access to electricity.

Customer Information Screens are due to be installed sometime between April 2023 and April 2024.

PASSENGER NUMBERS

Passenger numbers between 1/4/21 and 31/3/22 are shown below, together with those for the previous year and 2019/20 the last year before Covid.

STATION2021/222020/12019/20
Carlton27,61012,25457,552
Burton Joyce6,1461,82615,330
Lowdham30,8809,21670,442
Thurgarton1,7283244,338
Bleasby3,7421,4728,688
Rollerston2,5781,1185,408

All stations have increased their numbers on the previous 12 months but are not up to pre-covid levels. Carlton is now the second most used after Lowdham which has regained the top spot between Nottingham and Newark. However, Lowdham has 44 more trains per week than Carlton. Averaging out the total number of trains per year over 51 weeks (one week lost through Christmas and engineering work), Lowdham has 2 and a third passengers per train and Carlton 2 and a quarter. Fiskerton also has a London St. Pancras call each way on weekdays.

Netherfield figures (5,556/1,210/8,292) are quite respectful considering only nine trains a day call there on weekdays. Elton & Orston is the least used station in the country but only has 2 trains a day calling there.

OTHER TIMETABLE CHANGES

Six Nottingham to Matlock services have been reinstated. From Nottingham at 06.17, 07.12, 08.13, 15.15, 16.15, 17.15. From Matlock to Nottingham at 06.53, 07.53, 08.54, 15.54, 16.54 and 17.54. These trains call at all stations including Spondon.

FARE DODGERS

As from 1st January, anyone trying to fare dodge will now end up with a £100 fine (up from £20) or £50 if paid within 21 days, plus the cost of the ticket they should have bought. Between January and 13th October, revenue protection officers and onboard staff have issued 9,642 notices and prosecuted 1,470 fare avoiders, recouping £493,000 in the process. Court cases were for those who refused to pay their fare or the f20 fine imposed during this period. The money recovered will help reduce costs for taxpayers. Most honest travellers are pleased that action has been taken.

E-SCOOTERS, E-SKATEBOARDS and HOVERBOARDS BAN

These are now banned on trains and at stations due to safety concerns. The problem comes from the lithium-ion batteries they use which can sometimes become too hot and ignite, with no way of stopping the reaction until it has finished its course, producing toxic fumes and fire. Other rail companies are introducing, or have introduced, these bans, the latest being Trans Pennine Express. Electric wheelchairs, e-bikes and mobility scooters for those with access needs are exempt. If unsure always check with staff or contact EMR.

FARE RISES

Regulated fares, such as season tickets, will increase by 5.9%. However, look out for special offers which some companies offer at various times. ScotRail has been given a large sum of money by the Scottish Government so that from April, peak fare and anytime fares will be suspended for six months.

Local MPs extra earnings revealed

New data has revealed what MPs earned on top of their annual salary.

Westminster Accounts, by Sky News and Tortoise Media, show that UK politicians earned an extra £17.1m.

All MPs are paid a base salary of £84,144.

The online database discloses earnings from secondary employment, donations from other associations and gifts, from December 2019 to the present day.

Tortoise Media said: “Although most of this money must technically be disclosed to the public, the way that information is reported, stored and displayed almost guarantees the records will not be widely scrutinised.

“Payment records are spread across different government websites, often split into small files covering short periods of time and regularly published with duplicate entries, spelling mistakes and other errors.

“The data required to examine the financial interests of just one member of parliament is laborious to gather.

“Tortoise Media and Sky News have programmatically collected and analysed thousands of donations and payment records from MPs, political parties, and all-party parliamentary groups (APPGs).”

The project found that most of the extra earnings went to conservative politicians, totalling £15.2m.

Labour received an additional £1.2m.

Former prime minister Theresa May received the most, earning £2,550,876 since the session began in December 2019.

Labour’s shadow foreign secretary David Lammy topped his party’s list with an extra £202,599.

Here’s what our local MPs received…

Gedling MP Tom Randall

Since the beginning of the current parliament at the end of 2019, Mr Randall has declared five financial interests.

MPs are required to report both their own direct financial interests and any donations or other payments that are received by their local constituency party to support their work or election.

The five donations, gifts, payments and other benefits Mr Randall has declared so far are worth the equivalent of approximately £7,700.

Mr Randall’s five interests come from five different sources. Those five sources are: Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI), The Carlton Club, Gerald Clarke, PGZ Naval Shipyard and Voiviode of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The largest single item Mr Randall has declared is a gift worth £3,100 from Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI).

The smallest single item is a gift worth £40 from Voiviode of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Sherwood MP Mark Spencer

The 17 donations, gifts, payments and other benefits Mr Spencer has declared so far are worth the equivalent of approximately £61,840.

The top five sources are: Langley Holdings, Roodsafe, C A Strawson Farming, I M Group and Roger Holehouse.

The largest single item Mr Spencer has declared is a donation worth £10,000 from Roodsafe.

The smallest single item is a gift worth £300 from Betting and Gaming Council (BGC).

Man charged after threats made and mountain bike stolen in Mapperley Park

A man has been charged after a man was threatened and robbed of his mountain bike in Mapperley Park.

The incident took place on December 8, 2022, on Mansfield Road, Mapperley Park.

A suspect was arrested on January 3, 2023 in connection with the incident. Upon being arrested, a lock knife was found by officers.

Earl Haye, of Bentinck Road, Arboretum, has been charged with possession of a knife blade in a public place, robbery, receiving stolen goods, affray and theft.

The 49-year-old appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (January 5) and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

Inspector Ben Lawrence, who leads the City Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are committed to tackling all forms of crime to ensure our communities continue to be a safe place for both residents and businesses.

“We have been working hard to understand the full circumstances behind the reported incidents and I am pleased we have now been able to bring charges.”

Three arrested after search of property in Stoke Bardolph uncovers cash and cannabis grow

Three men have been arrested after police teams uncovered a cannabis grow and cash at a property in Stoke Bardolph.

Police were first alerted to the suspects after spotting a damaged vehicle outside a property they were observing in Boxley Drive, West Bridgford.

Three suspects were arrested when they were spotted entering and leaving the house and behaving suspiciously on December 29, 2022.

Officers then carried out a search of the property and discovered cropped cannabis plants and a number of new plants. They also found suspected Class A drugs, drug equipment and cash.

A search of an address in Stoke Bardolph uncovered another cannabis grow and thousands of pounds in cash.

A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis and being concerned in the supply of cannabis.

Another man, aged 45, was arrested on suspicion of the cultivation of cannabis.

A third man, aged 35, was arrested on suspicion of the cultivation of cannabis and being concerned in the supply of the Class B drug.

Rob Lawton, Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for Rushcliffe, said: “Taking suspected Class A drugs off the streets is always a great result and I am pleased we have made three arrests.”

These schemes are hoping to get the green light at next week’s Gedling Borough Council Planning Committee meeting

Plans for nine new houses, a pre-school extension and changes to a a car park are hoping to get the green light at next week’s planning committee meeting at Gedling Borough Council.

The committee will make a final decision on whether the proposed schemes can move forward based on recommendations from the council’s planning officers.

They will be asked to make a decision on the following proposals:

Erection of 24 dwellings, associated parking and access roadland at Grange View Road, Gedling

The applicant wants to erect 24 dwellings. It would include a range of two, three, four and five bedroom properties, which would all be two or two and 1/2-stories in scale. All of the dwellings would be detached, save for one pair of semi-detached properties. Five of the properties are identified as being low-cost including 3 first homes and 2 affordable rent, which would be a mixture of 2 and 3-bed properties. Public open space is proposed to the site entrance. Access should be provided to the site from the now operational Gedling Access Road.

Planning officers have recommended that the application is approved.

Construction of new building to house builders merchant – Total Site Road No 3 Colwick NG4 2JS

The applicant wants to erect a building for use as a builders merchant (Sui Generis) with trade counters and ancillary kitchen joinery showroom for the display, sale and storage of building, timber and plumbing supplies, plant and tool hire, including outside display and storage including storage racking; and 2) erection of industrial and logistics units (Use Classes E(g)(iii), B2 and B8); together with access and servicing arrangements, parking and landscaping, boundary fencing and associated works.

Planning officers have recommended that the application is approved. They said: “The application site is within an established industrial estate and will enhance employment use on offer. The built form would respect the character of the area and amenity of adjacent users. Highway safety would be respected and parking provision is considered to be acceptable.”

Change of use from B2 (General Industry) to a flexible use of B2 (general Industry) and Sui Generis (dog day care) – Forester Street, Netherfield

This application seeks permission to change the use of the existing general industrial unit to a flexible use of B2 (General Industry) and doggy day care facility (sui generis use). In accordance with Class V of Part 3, Schedule 2 of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 2015 (as amended), permission can be granted for interchangeable uses for a period of 10 years. At the end of the 10 year period the active use becomes the lawful use. 3.2 No external alterations to the building are proposed as part of this application.

Planning officers have recommended that planning permission is refused. They said: “The proposed use, through the noise that it would generate from the dogs, along with increased vehicle movements, including dropoffs and pickups, would have a detrimental impact on the amenity of neighbouring properties in a predominan residential area, to the detriment of the amenity of local residents.”

Install a 10m column, concrete base and street cabinet for CCTV camera – Vale Road, Colwick

The application site is on the corner of Lockerbie Street and Vale Road in a largely residential area. Neighbouring land uses are predominantly residential with some retail and food and drink uses to the south side of Vale Road.

The application seeks full planning permission for the erection of a 10m high column and 2m antennae extension for a CCTV camera and associated transmitter equipment, with a concrete base. The total height of the proposed column with antennae extension will be 12m. 3.2 The purpose of the camera is to assist in the prevention and detection of crime and anti-social behaviour at the site.

Planning officers have recommended that permission is granted.
