Nottingham-based beauty salon group, Beauty Temple has recently expanded with a brand-new cafe in Mapperley.
Located on the site of the former Beauty Temple Mapperley salon, which has recently moved to larger premises nearby, the new Blossom Cafe is the second cafe to be opened by the group that was founded in 2006 by husband and wife team Martin and Lucy Goodwin.

Promising to be much more than just a cafe, the new location will also host the return of the salon chain’s hugely popular Yummy Mummy Mornings, offering a unique and convenient opportunity for new parents to connect with others while enjoying a range of relaxing treatments.

Gedling-based business owner Chrissy Flavell said “It’s been brilliant to be able to sell my flowers and gifts in a physical retail space and feel part of the local community. Working alone and relying on local markets and online sales can be isolating and costly, so it’s great to have the support of a larger business community too.”
The Blossom Cafe is also licensed to sell alcohol and will be holding a host of evening events over the coming months.

LAMBLEY Village Cricket Club is set to open one of their biggest seasons ever this weekend after a bumper year on and off the pitch.
The Lambs take on Attenborough in their first game of the season this Saturday (April 29), with their new Sunday side kicking off against Farnsfield (April 30red:.
After surging to the South Nottinghamshire Cricket League Division J title in 2022, the club – based at the Octavian Oval on Lambley Lane – set about continuing its recent resurgence with a series of significant off-field moves.

Following a grant from Gedling Borough Council and additional support from sponsors, the Lambs were able to refurbish their ageing clubhouse and changing rooms ahead of the 2023 campaign, which will see the club play at their highest level since 2014.

Club chairman Alex Cox says that there is a real sense of momentum at the club at the moment – something which is driving them forward on and off the pitch.
“Last year’s success was huge for the club and performances throughout the season were out of this world at times. As we took stock over the winter, we wanted to have a really strong focus on growing the club sustainably, and the clubhouse is a big part of that.

“We’ve had great support from the local councillors and sponsorship from the likes of Kingdom Architectural Glass and Wickes – who donated £400 of materials – but also from our club members themselves in terms of getting the work done to ensure the facility is ready for the new season.”
They are also supplementing their growing squad by entering a team in the Newark Alliance Sunday League – returning after nearly ten years – and made some significant off-season moves to strengthen its playing staff.
Fast bowling duo Tom Snee and Robson Kightley have joined the Lambs from Gedling Colliery and Papplewick & Lindby respectively, while Glenn Morley – who has made more than 150 appearances for the club – will play for the Sunday side while remaining registered elsewhere in the Saturday league.

Snee said: “As soon as I spoke to the guys at the club, it was clear that there is a real ambition to not just rise up the leagues, but also improve off the pitch as well.
“It’s an exciting time to be involved, and I’m looking forward to contributing in whatever way I can.”
The pair join a side that put in some dominant performances in 2022, with opening batsman Elliot Burnett scoring nearly 600 runs and left arm quick Lee Wilson bagging 57 wickets – the most of any bowler across the league’s 13 divisions – as Lambley pipped Midlands CC to the title on the final day of the season.
The Lambs open their Division H season with a home game against Attenborough on Saturday, 29 April (1pm), with their inaugural Sunday league campaign kicking off the following afternoon away at Farnsfield (also 1pm).
Police have released images of four people they’d like to speak to after thousands of pounds worth of goods were stolen from a store in Arnold.
Printer ink, razers, medicine and toothbrushes were among the large amounts of items taken by a group of shoplifters working in tandem from the Asda store on Front Street.
Three men and a woman used large bags they were carrying to smuggle the items out the store without being detected.
The items – valued at around £4,000 in total – were stolen from the store at around 1pm on 11 March 2023.
Police investigating the theft have now released images of three men and a woman that they suspect could’ve been involved.
PC Emma Jordan, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Shop thefts like this are a blight on the community and can have a really detrimental impact on businesses and the staff that work there.
“It’s important that anyone who recognises any of the people in these pictures gets in touch with the police straight away.
“We don’t want to see a repeat of this incident and are determined to catch the people involved.
“Anyone with information can call the police on 101, quoting incident 359 of 11 March 2023, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Goals from brothers Kieran and Nat Watson bookended a nail-biting afternoon at Stoke lane as Carlton Town beat Dunston 2-0 to avoid automatic relegation on the last day of the season.
The Millers still face a playoff to secure their step 4 safety but anything less than a win here would have seen them relegated immediately. As it was, the win moved the home side up to 17th in the table and they await news as to who their playoff opponents will be. Dunston’s defeat ended their promotion playoff hopes and they had to settle for a sixth-place finish for the second consecutive season.
Carlton came into the game with just one change to the side which had drawn at Pontefract Collieries less than 48 hours earlier. Jared Holmes replaced Lawrence Gorman with Khyle Sargent moving to right back.

Both sides knew only a win would suffice for their differing purposes and it was Carlton who started much the sharper. They got off to a dream start by taking the lead on just five minutes when Kieran Watson ran onto a Sargent pass, rounded goalkeeper Daniel Staples, fired at goal and Jude Swailes’s attempted clearance struck Terence Galbraith with the ball ending up in the back of the net.
Dunston’s first opportunity came on 20 minutes when Dale Pearson won the ball and ran through on goal only to be denied by a superb tackle from Sargent.
Carlton continued to push forward and Kyle Tomlin sped down the right before crossing to Holmes whose shot was blocked. The ball fell to Nat Watson and he skipped into the area before hitting a shot that was cleared off the line by Sado Djalo.
It was clear to the impressive home support that the Carlton players were clearly up for this game. Tomlin saw another effort blocked while Sargent was winning tackle after tackle in defence and midfield.
Nat Watson fired over the bar after Holmes had done well to win possession and shortly afterwards the same player drew a comfortable save from Staples.
Dunston, who brought an impressive number of supporters to Nottinghamshire, always carried a threat and Holmes did superbly to get a block ahead of Dale Pearson after a fine run and cross by Djalo.
But it was the Millers who had much the better of the first half, with Holmes and Danny Elliott outstanding in midfield, and Dean Freeman and Dan Brown looking secure at the back, ably supported by Lewis Durow and Sargent. The Watsons looked lively and Niall Hylton and Tomlin were always looking to attack on the flanks.
The visitors had been fairly quiet in the first half but they looked far more threatening after the restart and Carlton had to defend deep for long periods. Dunston were given a golden opportunity to equalise when they were awarded a penalty on 53 minutes after Sargent was penalised for a foul on Djalo. But Mikey Emery was Carlton’s hero, saving Philip Turnbull’s spot kick and Will Jenkins’s follow-up effort. It was a double save that turned out to be crucial in preserving Carlton’s step 4 status for now.
Djalo then headed over the bar unmarked as the second half dragged on agonisingly for the home support. News that relegation rivals Shildon were comfortably ahead at Grimsby filtered through and Carlton knew that a single Dunston goal would send them down. Instead, the team defended with an intensity only occasionally seen this season and repelled all of the Dunston attacks.
Jenkins was inches wide with a 77th minute free kick before Brown made yet another superb tackle as the visitors broke into the penalty area.
Hylton had another impressive game and was a source of most of Carlton’s few attacks in the second half. With three minutes remaining he did well to win the ball on the right and send substitute Charlie Marzano through on goal. The angle was tight and Marzano slipped his shot a couple of feet wide of the post.
With the clock on 89 minutes the whole ground erupted as Carlton doubled their lead. A Durow throw sent Hylton away on the left. He advanced into the area and when his shot was parried by Staples, Nat Watson was on hand to fire into the roof of the net. The unbearable tension that had gripped the home fans for the interminable second half was vanquished in scenes of pure unbridled joy with supporters and players celebrating together.
There was still enough time for Emery to make another fine save, from Carl Finnigan, before the referee ended proceedings and the players got a thoroughly deserved ovation from the home support.
Ten games ago they were 10 points adrift of safety and looked doomed. They would have snapped your hand off then for a relegation playoff position and that’s what they’ve earned with six wins and a draw from those 10 matches. They will know they have to do it all again next week to see the job to its conclusion.

Detectives have charged a suspect after a woman was left unconscious after a city centre assault.
The victim was punched and knocked to the floor during the attack which happened in Long Row, Nottingham.
She suffered significant head injuries as a result of the assault which happened during the early hours of 12 March 2023.
A suspect was arrested during the early hours of yesterday (Sunday 23 April 2023). It followed a police pursuit after a car sped away from officers, around the area of the A52, Holme Pierrepont.
Shakeal Fraser, aged 25, of Honeywood Drive, Carlton, is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court today (Monday 24 April 2023) charged with causing grievous bodily harm without intent, dangerous driving, and drink driving.
Detective Inspector Jon Kerry, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I am pleased we have charged a suspect regarding these serious matters, and I hope it reassures people the force will take robust action against individuals who engage in this sort of criminality and disorder.”
Lidl has published its shortlist of priority locations for new stores as it targets over 1,100 outlets across the UK – with two borough sites listed.
The discount grocer said the list represented potential sites – but only a small number would be developed into new branches.
Lidl has opened 15 new stores in the last three months and expects to open 10 more later this year.
18 locations were listed in Nottinghamshire, with Gedling and Mapperley making this list.
Lidl GB chief development officer Richard Taylor said: “Our store expansion has been and continues to be unparalleled.
“In the last three months alone, we’ve opened 15 new stores – more than any other retailer, and in 2022 we welcomed customers through the doors of over 50 new stores.”
Taylor added that the discount retailer “won’t be stopping there” and that there is “no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential”.

An online fitness instructor has been helping people shed pounds in more ways than one across Gedling borough and the surrounding areas.
Lorna Marie Fitness and her clients, many of whom are from Gedling borough have raised a massive £3200 for charities in the last six months alone while at the same time getting fit and losing lbs.
Lorna said “we’re continuing to do what we can to support local charities in our area. It feels really good to give back.”
The amazing list of fundraising activities that Lorna and her husband Will have carried out include raising £1946 for The Richard Whitehead Foundation.
Lorna said “We held a Pilates and Prosecco event where Richard (Whitehead MBE) came to talk to everyone at the end, telling them all about the charity’s current projects and we did a 2 hour online workout-a-thon with ‘Tech Will’ – my husband who does the tech for the business”

“The following Monday, 19 December, our lovely volunteer, Peter collected 56 bags of food for families in Lowdham who were finding things tough over the festive period.

Other fundraising events have included a 10,000 step workout for MIND raising £784, a Zumba-thon online for Breast Cancer that raised over £800 and £700 was raised for ‘Stand With Ukraine’ by doing a 2 hour workout-a-thon.
Lorna said “It’s been a team effort, with everyone coming together to make a real difference in our community. We’re currently starting fundraising for the Newark Children’s Bereavement Centre and are walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks for them in June to help raise funds and although this is in June we’re currently at over £470 in donations and growing.
“It would mean the world to us to inspire others to get involved.”

Sainsbury’s has this week unveiled a new ‘Pocket Friendly Prices’ value campaign, rolling out across its Local stores – including those in Gedling borough.
The chain has local stores in Calverton, Gedling and on Mapperley Plains.
The offering at their convenience stores will provide lower prices on household essentials such as own-brand chicken breast fillets, butter and baked beans.
A Sainbury’s spokesman told Grocery Gazette “We’re committed to doing everything we can to support customers with the rising cost of living
“Our Pocket Friendly Prices highlight low prices on everyday essentials in our convenience stores.”
This latest move comes after supermarkets enhanced their loyalty schemes, with Sainsbury’s launching Nectar Prices earlier this month, as it looks to compete with Tesco’s Clubcard scheme.
The Co-op recently followed suit in introducing cheaper prices exclusively for members of its loyalty programme, Co-op Membership, claiming it could save shoppers as much as £300 per year.
The Conservative-led authority says it has been allocated £38.36 million from the Government to cover Nottinghamshire for its ‘Basic Need’ funding cash in 2023/24.
This is money allocated to councils to ensure schools have the capacity for the number of places required in their areas.
It can be used on capital projects like expansions or new school builds if demand is high.
Ongoing projects include the expansion of Carlton le Willows Academy
Now papers have revealed where further cash could be spent to tackle other localised gaps or demand across the borough.
Calverton is one area being targeted despite a projected surplus of 10 primary school places by the 2026/27 academic year.
The authority says its departments believe this surplus is “below a sensible operating margin” and it will fund an extra 40 places in the village.
This, it says, can be funded through contributions from property developers and could be accommodated at Sir John Sherbrook Junior School.
Feasibility studies will be drawn up to work out whether this may be possible in the future.
For secondary school places, further expansion plans have been suggested in Carlton.
Carlton le Willows Academy is currently being expanded by 400 spaces but the authority says the Gedling town needs further capacity.
It plans to use the Basic Needs funding to increase pupil admission numbers at Carlton Academy, a separate school, from 230 to 270 pupils.
This could eventually bring an additional 200 places for pupils in years seven to 11.
The expansion plans were presented to two cabinet members during a delegated decision on Monday, April 17.
In a report, Peter McConnochie, the council’s service director for education, said further documents will be drawn up if feasibility studies find any of the projects can be delivered.
These will outline how much any of the projects would cost.
Parents across Nottinghamshire received letters this week outlining whether their child will be going to their preferred primary school of choice.
The council confirmed 96.3 per cent of Nottinghamshire children were offered their parents’ first choice school, or 7,767 out of 8,062.
Overall, 99.6 per cent of pupils will go to one of their parents’ preferred schools.
The authority says those who are happy with their allocated school have until Monday, May 1 to accept the offer.
