Inn for a Penny in Carlton to close in October for major refurbishment

A Carlton pub is to temporarily close next month as it enjoys a huge overhaul.

The Inn For A Penny pub, in Carlton, will pull its final pint on October 1, before revamp work begins on October 2. It will reopen ‘towards the end of the year’.

Major renovation work is to be carried out on the pub’s interior and exterior as part of the significant investment in the building.

PICTURED: Inn for a Penny

The pub will be fully redecorated, with new lighting, flooring and bric a brac. The garden will feature a covered pergola, with loose and fixed seating, as well as a children’s play area.

The pub will be zoned to provide space for pub sports, socialising, dining and a live acts area. TV screens will be strategically placed, to ensure the best viewing experience without dominating.

The Penny is currently a Greene King pub, but the firm will reopen it as part of its Hive brand.

Each pub under this marque is set up by Greene King, and is run as a franchise.

The company aims to convert 170 sites to the Hive brand over the next five years. More than 30 have been converted so far.

A spokesperson for Greene King said: “Plans are underway for a full refurbishment of the Inn for a Penny, both inside and out.

“We’re looking forward to opening this great community pub under the Hive Pubs umbrella, with classic pub food, an excellent drinks range, entertainment and live sport, towards the end of this year.”

The planning application is pending consideration by Gedling Borough Council.

Fines to tackle irresponsible dog owners in Gedling borough who don’t pick up their dog’s mess will continue

A legal order allowing Gedling Borough Council’s wardens to fine people £100 for not clearing up after their dogs has been extended for another three years.

Over the last three years, the Labour-run authority’s neighbourhood wardens have been running extra patrols and installing signs and pavement stencils in areas where there has been a significant number of complaints.

Under a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), if an offence is witnessed by a warden the offender can be fined £100, and may face court and a £1,000 fine if they fail to pay.

While offences have been decreasing, from 244 reports of dog fouling in 2020/21 to 190 in 2022/23, the council says the issue is still a problem.

During a cabinet meeting on September 7, councillors agreed to extend the order for another three years across the entire borough, with the existing order due to come to an end in October.

Cllr John Clarke (Lab), the leader of the council who represents Netherfield, said: “You know the area I live in, in the Carlton area, there are absolutely piles of the stuff all over the place.

“And the subsequent work and the yellow signs are exceptionally good because there is a lot about now.

“It just focuses the mind because sometimes people forget and sometimes this ‘we are watching you’ business, which sounds a bit draconian, [works].

“But I’m afraid the mess that was being left in suburbs and places like that, not so much in town centres, but certainly around people’s homes, was unacceptable.”

Cllr Jenny Hollingsworth (Lab), for Gedling, added: “I’m very pleased to see we’ve got the opportunity to extend this.

“I think really we need to be clear that 99.9 per cent of dog owners are responsible and don’t cause this problem, it is just a very small percentage who leave us with a large problem, and quite large sometimes, and people complain about it.

“Can I just thank wardens who last year, when I gave them a problem on a new development, were able to very quickly have a presence there and reassure people.

“That was the other issue in that people did not think they were covered by this PSPO if it was a new development, so I think we need to make it clear that it is the whole of the borough, and whether or not it is a new development it is included in this order.

“It is a problem, it continues to be a problem, enforcement isn’t that easy unless the warden is on site and just happens to spot somebody, but it is education and I like the stencils on the ground, I think it is helpful.

“I know some years ago there was some resistance to that but I think they do work and it is a visual reminder when people are walking along to make sure they clear up after their dogs.”

Man formerly of Carlton Hill jailed for violently attacking woman before bludgeoning male with imitation handgun

A violent rapist has been jailed after he after sexually assaulted a woman before bludgeoned a man with an imitation.

Lukasz Feliks, 40, raped and strangled the woman on March 15, 2023 at an address in Nottingham before confronting another man outside.

Feliks was holding an imitation handgun as he ran towards the man and struck him repeatedly over the head it.

As he was arrested by armed police a short time later, he admitted attacking the man and claimed the victim was lucky he didn’t ‘chop him up.’

The gun was later found to be an imitation weapon and Feliks was remanded into custody.

While awaiting trial, he then sent a series of letters to the woman he raped urging her not go give evidence at his trial.

Feliks, formerly of Carlton Hill, denied charges of rape, sexual assault and intentional strangulation but was found guilty last week by a jury at Nottingham Crown Court.

He admitted to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was also convicted of possessing an imitation firearm, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He was sentenced on Friday to a total of 12-and-a-half years in prison.

Detective Constable Melissa Brown, an officer specialising in rape and serious sexual assault offences at Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Feliks committed an appalling act of sexual violence that left his victim in fear of her life.

“He then caused a similar level of fear to the second victim in this case as he ran towards him holding what looked like a real firearm.

“He is very clearly a dangerous and violent criminal and I am pleased he will now spend a very significant amount of time in jail.

“The woman he raped has shown considerable courage in this case and was absolutely determined to see this case through to its conclusion – despite Feliks’s best efforts to dissuade her.

“My colleagues and are full of admiration for her and hope this sentence will come as some comfort to her in the months and years ahead.”

Arnold man who was roadie for Nottinghamshire band Paper Lace jailed for historic child sex offences along with former guitarist John Chambers

An Arnold man who was once a roadie for Nottinghamshire band Paper Lace has been jailed for historic child sex offences along with their former guitarist.

Andrew Polkey, aged 57 and John Chambers, aged 73, and were jailed for a total of 26 years last week after officers uncovered a litany of sexual abuse against boys.

The men took it in turns to abuse one vulnerable boy over several years – plying him with drugs and alcohol after inviting him to their homes.

Nottingham_Crown_Court
PICTURED: The pair were jailed after appearing at Nottingham Crown Court

Chambers, a former guitarist with Nottingham-based band Paper Lace, exploited his status as a minor celebrity when he befriended the boy more than 30 years ago.

He later introduced him to former band roadie Polkey as the pair took turns to exploit him for their own sexual gratification.

It was during the course of that investigation that two further victims were identified who had each been abused by Polkey.

Detectives at Nottinghamshire Police initially started to looking onto the allegations in 2017 when the victim – now an adult – came forward to report what had happened to him.

The trail then ran cold after the victim decided not to continue his complaint with a formal statement. When he reengaged with detectives two years later they were able to move the case forward.

Detective Sergeant Lee Kirk, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:“As is often the case with non-recent allegations this victim simply did not feel ready to speak in more detail about what happened to him, so there was little we could do to move forward the matter forward.

“The victim decided to re-engage with us. His evidence was utterly compelling and forensic in detail in places, including details of Chambers home and of vehicles linked to his former band.

“In it he painted a picture of a predatory and manipulative child abuser who very deliberately groomed and exploited a secondary school age boy.

“When Polkey, a known associate of Chambers, was also identified as an abuser by the first victim our investigation really gathered pace. Polkey was then identified by another man and we prepared to make arrests.”

Both men were arrested in 2020 and interviewed about the allegations.

Both denied the offences but later pleaded guilty to multiple sexual assaults.

Chambers, formerly of Crowley Close, Bilborough,  pleaded guilty to eight assaults against one boy and Polkey, formerly of Glade Hill Road, Arnold, admitted to 17 against two boys.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court last Thursday (August 31) Chambers and Polkey were jailed for ten-and-a-half years and 13 years respectively.

Both men were also made the subject of Sexual Harm Prevention Orders, which will closely restrict their behaviour once thy are released from prison.

A third man, 46-year-old Matthew Mardell, of Glade Hill Road, pleaded guilty to two indecent assaults on a boy and was given a 20 month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Superintendent Natasha Todd, head of Public Protection at Nottinghamshire Police, said: “These men thought they could commit these offences with impunity, but they simply hadn’t reckoned on the bravery of their victims and the determination of Nottinghamshire Police to hold them to account.

“Two of them will now spend a very considerable amount of time behind bars and I hope this brings some comfort to their victims.

“I hope this case also serves as a warning to others about just how seriously we treat offences of this nature.

“Regardless of how old allegations are, we will investigate and we will go where the evidence takes us. In this instance it led us to two calculating and predatory sex offenders who groomed and assaulted young boys over a number of years.

“Finally, I would like to pay tribute not only to the detectives in this case, but also to the victims who have shown such remarkable determination during this process. We never lose sight of how hard it is for victims to relive these experiences, but we will always do our utmost to get them the justice they deserve.

“So I urge anyone who was abused as a child to come forward and help us hold their abusers to account.”

Arnold and Carlton branches of Wilko not on closure list – but futures remain uncertain

The Arnold and Carlton branches of Wilko have not been included on a list of stores earmarked for closure next week, but the store’s future remains uncertain.

The 52 Wilko shops set to close next week due to the chain’s collapse have been named, after the chain collapsed earlier this year.

Administrators PwC have revealed that 26 shops will close next Tuesday (12), with a further 28 on Thursday September 14, due to the absence of viable offers for the whole company, making around a thousand staff redundant.

PICTURED: Wilkos in Carlton Square (PHOTO: Gedling Eye)

The Arnold and Carlton stores are not on the list, but their future remains unclear after administrators said they couldn’t rule out further branch closures across the country.

Edward Williams, joint administrator, said: “In the absence of viable offers for the whole business, very sadly store closures and redundancies of team members from those stores are now necessary. The loss of these stores will be felt not only by the team members who served them with such dedication, including through the uncertainty of recent weeks, but also the communities which they have been a part of.

“We are enormously grateful for the support of team members during this difficult period and remain committed to doing all we can to help affected staff, assisting them with processing redundancy claims and working with relevant parties to help secure new employment as quickly as possible.”

“Active discussions with parties interested in buying parts of the business continue and the administrators remain committed to preserving as many jobs as possible. However, depending on the outcome of those talks, it is possible that further store closures may regrettably be necessary.”

Match Report: Linby Colliery Welfare FC 0 – 1 Pinxton

Central Midlands Alliance League Premier South – September 2

Both Linby sides fell to defeat at the weekend as the first were narrowly edged, 1-0, at home to Pinxton, and the reserves, 3-1 away to Ashland Rovers.

At Church Lane, Matt Peberday’s side put up a fight against visiting Pinxton, and could easily have taken a very early lead (as has been the case of late); a shout for a penalty in the first minute, for a possible foul on Ashdon Bernard, was waved away by referee Ibrahim Arsali, before Dylan Walker saw his effort blocked a minute later.

The visiting number eleven, Liam West, saw a volleyed effort sail over Jack Walker’s bar, before Brad Newbys shot was blocked well by Dylan Walker, both attempts coming in a matter of minutes with the visitors seizing control of the game.

Linby looked to turn things back in the favour just before the half hour mark when captain Greg Conn fired wide, Connor Gillan fired a free-kick over, and visiting shot-stopper saved well from Mason Moore.

With five minutes to go until the break, Nathan Benger sent a volley goal-wards for Pinxton, Walker equal to it however in the home goal as the two sides went in goalless at the break.

The second period continued in much the same vein, both sides creating chances but unable to find that killer breakthrough.

Benger headed over after fifty minutes before a free-kick from Sean Craven was dropped by Sherwood in the visiting goal, unfortunately for Linby, nobody was following up.

The chances continued to flow as first Conn headed wide of Sherwood’s goal, and Newby sent a free-kick over Walker’s bar, both goals leading a seemingly charmed life; the visitors though, they grabbed what proved the winning goal with thirteen minutes left on the clock as substitute Morgan Richards took aim from the edge of the box, and saw his effort deflect into the back of Walker’s net. There looked to be a blatant foul on Sanousi Ibrahim in the build up, but the officials waved away Linbys appeals.

Both sides could have registered in the closing ten minutes, a throw-in from Linby sub, Connaire Seery, was headed wide by Josh Wass at one end then, minutes later, Pinxton scorer, Richards, is denied by Walker in a one-on-one situation, the visitors holding out for a 1-0 win.

LINBY CW – Jack Walker, Rory Smith, Corey Wood, Ibrahim Sanousi (Connaire Seery, 80), Greg Conn (capt) (Alex Paterson, 76), Josh Wass, Dylan Walker (Brad Gregory, 76), Connor Gillan (Ewan Gibson, 67), Ashdon Bernard, Sean Craven, Mason Moore (subs – Ewan Gibson, Brad Gregory, Alex Paterson, Tom Coupe, Connaire Seery)

PINXTON – Will Sherwood, Harley Kozluk, Connor Mogford, Kyle Hempshall, Harvey Ford, Joel Smith, Ben Gowing, Ben Jones, Nathan Benger, Brad Newby, Liam West (subs – Josh Deakin, Aaron Northmore, Louis Richards, Morgan Richards, Sion Green)

MOM – Corey Wood

Officials – Ibrahim Arsali/Andy Harland/Scott Anderson

Meanwhile the reserves fell to a 3-1 loss away to Ashland Rovers, Luke Dye with Linby’s goal as the hosts netted through Ryan Butler, Michael Dennis, and Matthew Fowler, all four goals arriving in the first half.
Next up for the Linby sides, the firsts host Mickleover Reserves, whilst the reserves play the second of four, consecutive away games, this time away to Long Bennington, in Newark.
