Drop-in event in Arnold to offer legal and financial advice in cost-of-living crisis

A support event is being held in Arnold next week to help those struggling with the cost of living.

Rising costs have hit household finances hard, which is why Gedling Borough Council has joined with their partners to hold a household support event as part of Challenge Poverty Week.

Challenge Poverty Week takes place between October 16 – 22 and is an opportunity to raise awareness of services available to help those in need, and to change the conversation around poverty.

The event takes place at the Civic Centre, Arnot Hill Park, Arnold, NG5 6LU on Friday, October 20 from 10am – 12noon and brings together a range of partner organisations who will be highlighting the different services they offer, helping with enquiries, and raising awareness of the other schemes that may be available for residents.

PICTURED: Gedling Borough Council civic centre in Arnot Hill Park, where the event is being held

The services being promoted at the event are available throughout the year, but by bringing partners together in one place for the event, residents will be able to quickly deal with enquiries, including those which involve multiple different agencies.

Support at the event includes, housing benefit and legal advice, checking residents are receiving the correct benefits, health and wellbeing support, help completing application forms, job seeker information as well as details of schemes and promotions across the borough to help with the cost of living.

Councillor Kathryn Fox, Portfolio Holder for Life Chances and Vulnerability said: “The cost of living is having a huge impact on our residents, and we want to make sure we do everything we can to ensure that those who need support are aware of, and can access, the help they need.

“We are committed to ensuring that vulnerable residents are supported through our own welfare services as well as community partnerships, and events like this, that bring different agencies together under one roof are key to helping as many residents as possible.

We have some fantastic partners working alongside us at this event, all with a shared goal of improving the lives of people in Gedling Borough. I’d like to thank everyone involved in putting this event together, and to encourage any residents struggling with the cost of living to visit this event and see what support is available.”

The event is free of charge to attend and there is no booking required.

Partners at the event include:

  • Jigsaw Homes
  • Citizens Advice
  • The Ark
  • Sharewear
  • Derby Law Centre
  • The Furniture Project
  • Gedling Leisure

Notts Police issue Amazon scam warning after local residents targeted by fraudsters

Police in Notts are issuing Gedling borough residents to be vigilant following a spate of scams where fraudsters pretend to be from Amazon.

Over the past few weeks, a number of local residents have been targeted by scammers who tried to steal their personal and financial information.

A number of scams are doing the rounds, with victims contacted out of the blue either by phone call, text message or email.

In one incident, a woman lost £300 after receiving a call from someone claiming to be from “Amazon Prime security”. She was told her account had been compromised and after gaining the woman’s trust, the fraudster instructed them to download remote access software, which was subsequently used to access the victim’s online bank account.

PHOTO: Amazon

Elsewhere, a local woman was duped into spending £1,000 on Amazon Gift Cards and passing over the serials numbers so they could be used after receiving a email from a scammer posing as her manager.

Meanwhile, a lady with dementia received an automated phone call stating someone had used her Amazon Prime account and they wanted to refund her £150. She was instructed to press 1 to speak to a customer service representative and was put through to a male who knew her name and address. The male asked for her bank details so Amazon could refund her – but thankfully she refused after suspecting it was a scam.

Detective Sergeant Sally Collins, of Nottinghamshire Police’s fraud unit, said that whilst a number of Amazon-related scams were circulating, the tell-tale signs were similar.

She said: “During the correspondence, the scammer will find a reason to request the personal or financial information of the victim. They will typically ask victims to provide their Amazon account numbers and log-in information, their credit card number, or their Social Security number.

amazon prime

“For example, they might call you and say that someone has used your Amazon account to order an expensive item such as a laptop. Because the item was of a high value, the representative says Amazon needs to verify that you made the order.

“When you tell the representative that you did not make the order, the scammer will typically ask for your Amazon account log-in information and credit card number. The scammer will explain that this information is necessary to cancel the order and protect your account from further fraudulent activities.

“If you provide this information, the scammer can later access your Amazon account to run up illegal purchases in your name. The criminal might also use your credit card information to access your online credit card account, using it to make even more fraudulent purchases. To cause you even more financial pain, the scammer might sell this financial information on the dark web to the highest bidders.”

DS Collins said Nottinghamshire Police was raising awareness of the scams to help the public be vigilant. She said: “It’s not surprising that Amazon scams have become increasingly common in recent years, as the more people who shop on the site, the more opportunities there are for criminals to con them out of their financial information.

“But if you remain vigilant and remember to never provide your personal information when contacted out of the blue, you can protect yourself from these scams, no matter how common the fake phone calls become.”

Amazon has provided several warning signs of a call scam:

It’s about an order you never placed: If the call is about an order you never placed, the representative on the other end of the phone is not from Amazon. Instead of providing any information, log onto your Amazon account and click on the “Returns & Orders” tab at the top of the page. This will bring up a list of any outstanding and recently delivered orders. If the caller isn’t asking about one of these, it’s a scam.

The caller asks for your personal information: Amazon representatives will never ask for your personal or financial information during a phone call. If a caller asks for your credit card or Amazon account number, hang up. You’re talking to a scammer.

The caller is vague about what you ordered: If the caller never states exactly what you ordered and just refers to “your purchase,” that’s another sign that a criminal is fishing for your personal or financial information.

The caller is pressuring you to act quickly. Scammers like to create a sense of urgency. A caller might state that if you don’t immediately provide your account number someone might run up thousands of pounds of new purchases in your name. This is a trick designed to make you panic. When you panic, you’re more likely to surrender important personal information.

The call is a recorded message. Amazon doesn’t send robocalls, which are recorded messages sent to multiple callers. If you receive a recorded message stating that Amazon has noticed fraudulent activity on your account and might have to freeze your access to it? Hang up. It’s a scam. And if one of these robocalls leaves a message on your voicemail? Erase it and never return the call.

If you receive a scam call from someone claiming to be a representative from Amazon, whether you surrendered financial information or immediately hung up on the caller, report the suspicious activity to Amazon at: Report Something Suspicious – Amazon Customer Service

When you visit this page, you’ll have several options. You can click on different links depending on how much, if any, information you provided to scammers.

Further information on how to identify whether an email, phone call or text message is from Amazon can be found on their website.

You can also report fraudulent activity to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040.

Match Report: Linby Colliery Welfare FC 4 – 1 Meden Vale Colts

Notts FA Senior Trophy (7 October 2023)

An earlier kick-off was seen at Church Lane this past Saturday afternoon as Linby CW (Central Midlands Alliance Premier South) and Meden Vale Colts (Notts Senior League Division One) battled it out in the opening round of the Nottinghamshire FA Senior Trophy.

Linby boss, Matt Peberday, made a couple of changes to his starting eleven ahead of kick-off, Connor Gillan replacing the ill Josh Wass, whilst new signing, Jack Smith, recently joining from Hucknall, also started.

Both sides had chances in the opening quarter of the contest, each looking to get a foothold in the tie with Dylan Walker heading wide of Wigglesworth upright in the opening minutes before J Smith volleyed an effort at Jack Walker in the home goal; Walker would push the effort onto his crossbar before catching the rebound.

Smith came close to opening his account for Linby minutes later, Wigglesworth though equal to it, before calls for a penalty for the hosts are waved away by the referee after Walker was seemingly brought down in the penalty area.

With 25 minutes on the clock, the deadlock was finally broken as Patrick Stefaniak and Ashdon Bernard combined well on the left flank, the visitors failed to deal with the resulting cross and Mason Moore fired home his first of the afternoon from ten yards out.

Minutes later and Moore was at it again, doubling both his, and Linby’s tally when he knicked the ball off the toes of the Meden Vale defence, saw his first effort saved by Wigglesworth, but followed up quickest to net the rebound.

A third was added ten minutes before the interval, Linby threatening to run away with the game in the first half; a miskick from ‘keeper Wigglesworth was fired back into the net from debutant Smith, the hosts finding themselves three goals to the good.

Shortly before the interval and the visitors pulled a goal back, an initial shot from L Jepson was saved by Walker in the home goal, however, the Meden Vale man was first to the rebound to afford the NSL side a glimmer of hope.

Moore’s afternoon was wrapped up just after hour mark when Peberday replaced him with Mitchell Slawson to freshen the attack up a little, and that move paid instant dividends for the CMA outfit; Slawson, within minutes of taking to the field, played the ball through to Ashdon Bernard, and he proceeded to lob the hosts’ fourth of the afternoon over the advancing Wigglesworth.

It would be a killer goal, putting an end to any hopes the visiting Meden Vale had, as Linby CW took their place in the next round of the Senior Trophy on the back of a comfortable, 4-1 home win.

Linby Colliery Welfare – Jack Walker, Rory Smith, Corey Wood (Ethan Fells, 75), Alex Paterson (Sanousi Ibrahim, 66), Billy Brooks, Connor Gillan, Dylan Walker, Mason Moore (Mitchell Slawson, 62), Jack Smith, Patrick Stefaniak (Ewan Gibson, 45), Ashdon Bernard (subs – Mitchell Slawson, Ewan Gibson, Sanousi Ibrahim, Ethan Fells)

Appeal aires on BBC Crimewatch over ‘brutal murder’ of man whose remains were found in field near Ravenshead after he vanished 56 years ago

Detectives investigating the murder of a man whose remains were found buried in a field near Ravenshead more than 50 years after he went missing have made an appeal for information on BBC One’s Crimewatch Live.

Alfred Swinscoe, aged 54 at the time, was last seen drinking at the Miners Arms in Pinxton in early 1967 and was then never seen again.

His remains were found in Coxmoor Lane this April when digging work was being carried out on farmland.

Alfred worked at Langton Colliery from the age of 14 and was last seen at work on January 20, 1967.

PICTURED: Remains were found by police in a field on Coxmoor Road
PICTURED: Alfred Swinscoe, aged 54 at the time, went missing in mysterious and unusual circumstances

He was ‘a cutter’ known for operating a machine that cut large chunks of coal out of the coal face for others to then break down.

He had the nickname of ‘Sparrow’ and was known as the “Champion Pigeon Man of Pinxton” due to his love of pigeon racing.

Four of his six children are still alive and he has a number of grandchildren.

Detectives are continuing to build up a picture of Alfred’s life, his past acquaintances, and a chronological order of what happened the night he went missing.

It is believed that Alfred was drinking with his two sons and friends on the night of his disappearance.

He was last seen at around 10.30pm when he gave his son some money to buy a round and then left to use the outside toilet. He never returned.

Detectives believe Alfred was killed and then buried in farmland around four to 6ft deep.

There were a number of traumatic injuries found on his skeletal remains, which are undergoing further analysis.

Further tests are also being carried out to determine how he was killed.

On today’s (9) Crimewatch Live, Alfred’s family made a plea for answers as a dramatic reconstruction shows Alfred’s last known movements.

Detectives also appeared on the programme to reveal how specialist scientists were used to identify Alfred’s remains and the latest in the hunt for whoever killed him.

Detective Inspector Mel Crutchley, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are determined to find out what happened to Alfred and provide his family with the closure they desperately need.

“His killer left them with decades of unanswered questions about what happened to their loved one.

“We have been following several lines of inquiry since identifying the human remains as Alfred Swinscoe but we really need the public’s help due to the amount of time that has passed since the murder and his body being found.

“We know that his killer or killers would have driven to the Coxmoor Lane site by vehicle. This is significant as in 1967 not many people had access to a car in the Pinxton community.

“We have spoken to a number of people who knew Alfred to build up a picture of his life before he died.

“However, after the colliery closed, we know many people will have left Pinxton and moved to other parts of the country and even overseas.

“These are the people we need to speak to who may have the vital information we need.

“If you lived in Pinxton around the time of Alfred going missing on January 20, 1967, we need to hear from you.

“Whatever information you have, no matter how small about Alfred’s disappearance, please get in touch with us immediately. “

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room by clicking the online link below https://mipp.police.uk/operation/33EM22E48-PO1 or by calling 101 and quoting Operation Hiatus or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Prolific thief jailed after stealing handbags worth hundreds of pounds from Netherfield TK Maxx store

A prolific thief who stole handbags worth hundreds of pounds from a store in Netherfield has been jailed.

Dean Earl was eventually arrested when he was spotted by neighbourhood police while they were carrying out a shoplifting operation in Wollaton.

He had just filled his jacket with meat products when he ran into plain clothed officers as he tried to leave without paying.

PICTURED: Victoria Retail Park

Unbeknownst to the 42-year-old, Broxtowe officers from the City West Neighbourhood Policing team had been watching his every move inside Co-op in Lambourne Drive, Wollaton.

Earl was quickly detained by the officers after a quick search found he had around £100 worth of stolen stock under his coat.

A check on the system revealed Earl was actually wanted in connection with three other shop thefts as well.

Two different TK Maxx stores were targeted as part of the shoplifting spree, with Earl firstly swiping four handbags – worth £200 – from the shelves of a store in Victoria Retail Park on June 22, 2023.

He then made two separate visits to the branch in Giltbrook Retail Park, Giltbrook, on 4 and July 8 – once again stealing handbags on both occasions that were worth around £220.

Earl, of no fixed address, was brought before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 29 September, where he pleaded guilty to four counts of theft.

He was then sentenced to a total of 56 days in prison for his crimes.

PC Sam Yallop, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We understand how much of a negative impact shoplifting can have on businesses and in turn people’s livelihoods too, which is why we carry out regular operations like the one used in this instance.

“It is really important that we work closely with shops in our communities to identify and stop those who try to steal, and this was a great example of this approach working, as well as the effectiveness of using officers in plain clothes.

“Thanks to this operation, we were able to catch a prolific shop thief in the act and link him to a series of other thefts he was outstanding for too.

“As a result, Earl has now been put before the courts and taken off the streets after being given some prison time, so this was a really pleasing result.”

Seven arrested and two in hospital after street fight in Mapperley

Neither is believed to have sustained injuries that are life-threatening or life-altering.

Shortly after the incident was reported, police identified and detained a group of suspects in Carlton Road, Bakersfield, and Lower Parliament Street, in Nottingham City Centre.

Six men and one woman were subsequently arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of a bladed article and possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.

Chief Inspector Chris Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Two people had to be taken to hospital following this incident, which took place in the street and will have been seen by a number of people.

“As we work to understand exactly what happened, we will continue to speak with those witnesses as our investigation continues.

“We have now arrested seven people in connection with this incident, and hope the speed of our response provides some reassurance to the public about just how seriously we take reports of this nature.”

Anyone who has any information about what happened, or has any mobile phone footage of the incident is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 442 of 7 October 2023, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
