Work now underway to expand Farmfoods store at Carlton Square

Work has begun to expand a Farmfoods store at Carlton Square which will more than double the size of its store by extending into the former Office Outlet unit.

Farmfoods closed its current shop almost two weeks ago (Sunday, February 4) to start works on the expansion.

It will reopen in its bigger premises on Saturday, March 23.

Farmfoods fans are being reminded that their nearest store is on Southchurch Drive in Clifton until work is completed.

Wilkos closed its doors for good back in September. It was one of 400 stores that closed down after the budget retailer was plunged into administration.

Work has begun to transform the former Wilkos store into a larger Farmfoods outlet

The newly extended shop will take in all of the former Wilkos unit and more than double Farmfoods’ customer sales area

Wilkos closed its doors for good back in September. It was one of 400 stores that closed down after the budget retailer was plunged into administration.

The newly extended shop will take in all of the former Wilkos unit and more than double Farmfoods’ customer sales area.

A spokesman for Farmfoods told Gedling Eye: “I can confirm we have agreed to take occupation of the former Wilko premises at Carlton Square.

“The space occupied by our current shop and the space formerly occupied by Wilko will be combined into a single large shop that we will trade from.

Shopper Thea Smith,72, from Carlton, said she was looking forward to the store being expanded.

“I love Farmfoods and can’t wait to see what the larger store will have on offer.

“It will also be good for the other shops around here. I often come up here for a drink and a chat with friends and we have all said it’s been a lot quieter recently.”

But Jack Purkiss said he was hoping that another retailer would have taken up the former Wilkos space.

The 62-year-old from Netherfield said: “I’m not sure what a larger Farmfoods will offer. It would be nice to have something a bit different to add some variety for shoppers. A fishmonger would have been good or maybe a butcher.”

Residents in Gedling borough can show their love for potholes at ‘Valentine’s’ party mocking state of local roads

Residents in Gedling are planning to hold a mocking Valentine-themed party next weekend to share their love for potholes and raise awareness of the borough’s crumbling roads.

Organisers are inviting people to meet at the Gedling Inn pub on Main Street in the village on Saturday (17) for a drink before ‘taking the party to a pothole’ and eating cake.

The Gedling Borough Love Your Potholes Party will take place from 2pm.

The event is being organised by members of the Gedling Borough Potholes Facebook Group

Exclusive car window stickers will also be on sale at the event and have been created by group member Brian Bailey, whose pothole-themed calendar recently attracted national media attention.

A group spokesman posting the party invite online wrote: “Please bring anything you can that will make the party go with a swing.

“Bring pothole cake, pothole jelly – also useful for filling potholes, Valentine’s cards expressing your love for potholes, pictures of your favourite potholes, banners, placards, flowers, pothole decorations: anything else you can think of that will be fun, look good in photos, and express our love for potholes.

“Bonus points and a round of applause for anyone who manages to dress up as a pothole.

They added: “The pub has no affiliation nor endorsed this; we just picked this as a meeting point”

The dedicated Facebook group was set up back in and so far has attracted 1,700 members members.

It is being used to alert drivers about the worst affected areas across the borough with pictures of the crumbling and deep craters that can be found across all areas of the borough being posted by fuming motorists daily – and also have a bit of fun.

STOP THE DROP: New study reveals more than 10,000 animals get injured, trapped or killed by roadside rubbish

WARNING: Some readers might find the images and video below disturbing.

A new campaign is urging road users to stop littering as newly-released research reveals its deadly impact on wildlife.

National Highways has launched the new campaign, which is supported by the RSPCA and Keep Britain Tidy, with a simple plea: ‘Lend a paw – bin your litter’.

Almost half of the people who took part in a new study as part of the campaign were unaware that fruit peel and apple cores – which lure wildlife to their death – count as litter, research has revealed. A key finding from the drivers who admit to littering is that many don’t regard biodegradable food as litter and thought it was beneficial to wildlife.

And while more than 90% said they had never discarded litter onto the roadside, over 60% said they had seen someone else doing it.

Over the last three years the RSPCA has received more than 10,000 reports of animals found injured, trapped or dead from discarded litter – that’s nearly 10 reports every day.

As part of a long-term effort to rid the roadsides and motorway service areas of rubbish, National Highways has run a trial using AI-enabled cameras in conjunction with a local authority that is carrying out enforcement.

National Highways has also trialled message signs to reduce motorway littering, used geofencing to send texts to motorists entering laybys where littering is an issue to prompt them to take their litter home, and will be taking part in the upcoming Great British Spring Clean for the ninth year running.

National Highways chief executive Nick Harris said: “Littering is a dreadful social problem. It’s not just unsightly, it can have a deadly impact on wildlife, turning verges into lethal roadside restaurants.

“We’re working hard to tackle it on our roads, with our people litter-picking every day. To keep them safe we have to close motorway lanes, which delays drivers and costs millions of pounds.

“But if people don’t drop litter in the first place it wouldn’t need to be picked up – so we urge road users to take their litter home.”

RSPCA lead wildlife officer Geoff Edmond said: “Our rescuers deal with thousands of incidents every year where animals have been impacted by litter.

“Old drinks cans and bottles, plastic items and even disposable vapes are just some of the items that pose a danger to our wildlife including hedgehogs, squirrels, deer and foxes.

“Animals can ingest the litter, become trapped in it or be attracted to old food on the roadside which puts them in danger of moving vehicles.

“It’s really easy for the public to help. When people are out on the roads, we urge them to hold on to their litter until there is an opportunity to dispose of it safely and responsibly – or recycle where appropriate. As we all strive to create a better world for every animal, this could save an animal’s life.”

Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, chief executive of environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Our roads are a graveyard for small mammals and other wildlife that is attracted to the littered food and drinks that drivers illegally chuck out of their vehicles.

“We are pleased to see National Highways launch this long-awaited campaign aimed squarely at getting motorists to do the right thing, bin their rubbish and protect these precious, highly biodiverse areas where so many animals live.”

National Highways is responsible for collecting litter from England’s motorways and a small number of A-roads. It works closely with partners, including local authorities, who collect litter on most of the country’s A-roads.

The new campaign will feature on radio adverts, roadside billboards, posters at motorway service areas and petrol stations, and on social media.

Celebrations as Porchester Junior School’s Under 11s Girls Football team represent Nottingham Forest in East Midlands Regional Qualifiers

Porchester Junior School in Carlton is celebrating the news that their Under 11 Girls football team have beaten the competition to represent Nottingham Forest in the East Midlands Regional Qualifiers.

Playing against 9 other schools, the Porchester team won all but two of their games to go forward to the finals.

Teaching Assistant and proud Coach, Callum Davey said: “I am so proud of the team, they are so coachable, they’re the best team a coach could ask for. They work well together and are always enthusiastic. When we realised we had won, we could barely contain our excitement.”

Callum added that “Porchester Junior School staff and children are fully behind their team. I would like to say that all of this is only possible because of incredible support we as a school, and the players, are receiving from their carers and families.

“It’s a team effort on and off the pitch to give these girls the support and opportunities they deserve. We are looking forward to playing in Derby on March 8.  I am hopeful we will perform the same, or even better than we did during the tournament.”

PICTURED: Pupils in the winning team are Evelyn (Year 5), Georgia (Year 5), Rose (Year 5), Belle (Year 6), Isabelle (Year 6), Ceyda (Year 5) and Annie (Year 5). (Photo: Lou Brimble)

Footballer, Rose is in year 5 and said: “Its fun being in the football team, it’s like having an extra family at school. Even in bad weather. We don’t care about the weather; we care about the football. I want to be a professional footballer when I am older and joining the team is the best thing I have ever done. I was really excited when we won, we were shouting and laughing and jumping up and down. It was the best moment ever.”

Fellow footballer Ceyda is in year 5 and she said: “I have been playing football outside of school and so really wanted to be on the school team. I think we are a good team, and we get on well with each other. We have a good coach too. I really hope we win in March, but we know it will take a lot of hard work.”

Annie is in year 5 and says her dad sparked her interest in the game from an early age. “My dad inspires me to play football, and he coaches me at home. I really love playing and being part of a team. Our Porchester team is great, and I feel a part of something really special. Mr Davey our team coach is all you could ask for, and we feel lucky to have him.”

Speaking of the recent win Annie added: “We were already feeling excited because we came first in the top group stages to get in the tournament final and then we won the final. I think we did well because we know how important teamwork is.

“I think we were all happy and amazed and I remember thinking ‘did we just do that?’. As this was our first tournament, and as we are new to this and not sure what to expect, I think we might have been doing silly dances and cheering a lot when we won.

“I hope that we can bring back another trophy and more medals from the finals in March, but if we can’t, we have already done amazing. But I really don’t see why we can’t bring home one more trophy”

DARTS: Gedling Club move three points clear with 5 – 1 win against Calverton’s Gleaners B

Lowdham & District Village Mens Dart League RESULTS February 7

The Gedling Club’s 5 – 1 win at the Gleaners B in Calverton saw the current champions move three points clear in the league as second placed The Admiral Rodney slumped to a 4 – 2 loss at home against The Gleaners A.

Calverton Working Men’s Club’s 6 – 0 win at home against second bottom placed The Nags Head keeps them in the hunt and moves them joint second.

One point separates five teams in the fight for second place with The Cross Keys from Burton Joyce moving up to join the fight for second place with a 4 – 2 win in Oxton with the highlight of the night being a 180 from Ben Markham. The Burton Joyce outfit have only lost one game all season, a feat only matched by The Gedling Club.

The highlight of round 12 on February 14 must be in form Gleaners A taking on The Gedling Club at home in what promises to be a very tight encounter in Calverton.

Calverton Working Men’s Club will expect to take the points in Oxton against The Old Green Dragon while The Admiral Rodney could see their slump continue with the visit of Lowdham’s The Old Ship.

The 180s continue to rack up for Calverton’s Neil Lincoln who leads the 180 table while The Rodney’s P Cullen leads the highest finish table with 158.

New players and teams are always welcome and with seven of the ten teams based in the borough it’s a great way to spend your Wednesday evening. If you want to get involved or learn more, you can visit the league Facebook page here .
