Man admits causing death of pedestrian in Woodthorpe

A 26-year-old man has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a pedestrian in Woodthorpe last month.

The crash in Woodthorpe Drive on August 21 resulted in the death of 19-year-old Bryony Hollands, from Maidenhead, Berkshire. A 20-year-old male pedestrian was also seriously injured in the incident.

Thomas Burney, of Egerton Road, Woodthorpe, appeared via videolink for the hearing at Nottingham Crown Court today (10 September).

Burney admitted causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury through dangerous driving.

He will appear at court again for sentencing on October 23.

Officers investigating a shooting in Leybourne Drive, Bestwood, that took place in May are keen to locate a black Vauxhall Corsa.

It is believed that the car may have been in the area at the time of the incident which happened at about 1pm on Sunday 24 May 2015.

A 19-year-old man was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre with an injury to his arm.

 A 20-year-old man was arrested on 15 July 2015 on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and released on bail.

 A South African Pretoria Metal Pressings 9mm short cartridge casing was recovered from Leybourne Drive and police would like any information that would assist with recovering ammunition or the weapon used.

 Anyone with information about the incident should contact DS Andy Buxton Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident 358 of 24 May.

Millers win marred by injury to youngster on debut

Carlton Town moved up to 17th in the table on Saturday after a much needed home win over Loughborough Dynamo FC.

A crowd of just 70 witnessed the Millers’ first win under new manager Wayne Scott with the only goal of the game coming courtesy of a Daniel Gordon free kick which took a wicked deflection to wrong foot the Loughborough keeper early in the second half.

Loughborough had a late goal chalked out for offside and were clearly unhappy with the official’s decision but the Millers’ keeper Curtis McDonald insisted the correct call had been made.

Millers’ manager Wayne Scott had given a start to youngster Niall Davie after two impressive performances for the academy and the youngster did not let his manager down with a lively full debut, but tragedy was to strike for the talented youngster.

Anthony Howell had got away from his marker as Carlton hit Loughborough on the break and Davie tried to attack Howells cross but went down in a heap and Carlton coach Iain McCuloch who was watching from the stand quickly called for help for the stricken striker who looked to have serious ankle damage.

Davie was taken to hospital and the club earlier this week confirmed there was no bones broken, but suspected ligament damage would probably sideline the player indefinitely.

Millers’ chairman Mick Garton dedicated Saturday’s win to the young striker who remained in hospital.

He said: “I was delighted that Niall got his chance today and gutted for him with the injury.

“I said to him before he was taken to hospital that hopefully the lads could hold on and get the win and credit to them for doing that, it was a good day at the office and those have been few and far between in recent times.”

A third straight clean sheet and a third win in four games helped Real United move to third in the league table after a convincing display saw off the homeside comfortably.

Real started brightly against an organised Newark outfit who’s lack of attacking bite on the day meant for a one sided affair.

Tim Hopkinson opened the scoring with his 9th goal of the campaign after good work down the left wing from Glodi Bange. Bange beat two players to square for Hopkinson who cooly slotted home into the bottom corner on 16 minutes.

Jamie Spiers doubled the lead on 25 with a pile driving shot from the edge of the box, Spiers first goal of the campaign fizzed into the bottom corner after he ran on to a through ball.

A two goal half time lead was the minimum Real deserved after an impressive display where goalkeeper Alex Smith was hardly troubled.

Half Time: 0-2

Captain Spiers hit the woodwork with another cracking effort after the break before Kuwesi Ofushine bundled home a quickly taken corner delivered in by the impressive Tobias Richardson on 55.

Chances came to Tim Hopkinson & Ryan Bowen as Newark tired and a long clearance by Richardson was met by Glodi Bange who lobbed over the on rushing keeper as he raced through for number four.

Substitute Will Heath should have scored with a header he put wide and Ryan Bowen spurned a chance to score his first goal in three games.

The goal of the game however came on 85 when Tobias Richardson picked the ball up 40 yards out and after a couple of touches let fly a right footed curling drive in to the top corner of the net.

Jonathon Hart & Liam Moran might have added to the score later on and Newark had their own chance as their striker ran through to lob over the crossbar but Manager Gary Hayward was in the end more than content with another win and performance which suggests there is still a lot more to come from this team.

Morrisons to sell M Local convenience store chain for £25m

Supermarket chain Morrisons has agreed to sell 140 M local convenience stores for about £25m.

The retailer, which currently has an M Local convenience store on Carlton Hill, revealed today that the buyer was a team led by the retail entrepreneur Mike Greene, funded by Greybull Capital.

The shops are all set to be rebranded as “My Local”. The 2,300 staff will be kept on, with an extra 200 jobs set to be created by reopening 10 shops that are currently closed.

The move comes after the supermarket giant announced a review of its convenience store business in March.

Earlier this year, the retailer reported an annual loss of £792m.

It now plans to concentrate on its core supermarkets business.

Morrisons will keep five M local shops that are either on petrol forecourts or can be converted into small supermarkets.

Mapperley landlord who left tenants at risk is prosecuted

A rogue landlord from Mapperley has been landed with a £1600 legal bill after the City Council discovered a range of hazardous defects at one of his properties which he failed to fix.

Mr Sukhjinder Singh Sanghera of Plains Rd, Mapperley, pleaded guilty to not complying with the requirements of an Improvement Notice which was served on him by the council last October.

Nottingham Magistrates Court heard on Friday, September 4th that Mr Sanghera is a professional landlord with 22 rented properties. Following a lengthy investigation by Nottingham City Council, an Improvement Notice was served on Mr Sanghera in October 2014 due to extensive housing disrepair at a privately rented property in Nottingham.

The defects included:

  • A dangerous main staircase
  • An inadequate heating system
  • No fire detection at all
  • Access to the gas and electric meter via a trap door to the cellar with a rotten ladder
  • Broken windows and insecure doors.

The Improvement Notice required work to be undertaken to remove or reduce these hazards to an acceptable level. However, when the notice expired, it was found that none of the hazards had been properly addressed.

In sentencing Mr Sanghera the magistrate noted that Mr Sanghera had acted recklessly in not complying and placed his tenants at considerable risk. Mr Sanghera was fined  £400 and ordered to pay costs of £1,192 and a £40 Victim Surcharge.

Even after being made aware that he was being prosecuted, Mr Sanghera failed to complete all the works and the council is now carrying out some of the works to ensure that the risks are finally removed and that tenants can safely inhabit the property.

Councillor Nicola Heaton, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said:: “This landlord blatantly disregarded legal notices served by the Council and informal negotiations before this. Even now he has failed to bring his property up to standard. This has to be a case where the label ‘rogue landlord’ can be applied.”

Rufford Country Park launches search for Santa

The summer holidays may only just over but a county park’s search for Santa has already begun

The county council’s country parks team is looking to recruit a Father Christmas to join its team to help entertain children at its Rufford Country Park grotto, which forms part of the festive programme at Rufford and Sherwood Forest country parks later this year.

Lynn Negus, retail manager at Rufford Abbey Country Park, said: “There is clearly only one Father Christmas but as we all know he cannot be in every place at once so we have a vacancy for a jolly, jovial person to help out for a few hours.

“In previous years there has been no shortage of interest from people who want to lend a hand and this year we are asking if the local media can put the word out to help us. It is all about us helping to make Christmas as magical as we can for children from Nottinghamshire and beyond.”

Anyone interested in the position will need to be available for around six weekends in the run-up to Christmas. Interviews will take place in early September.

It is anticipated that this year the Christmas Grottos at both Rufford and Sherwood will open during weekends from November 21 until December 20 and will also open from Monday, December 21 to Wednesday, December 23, from 11am to 4pm.

Ravenshead woman appointed new county Guides president

A woman from Ravenshead has been appointed as new county president for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire.

Eve Griffith succeeds Anne Allery, who is retiring after seven years in the post, and was presented with her President’s badge during a private ceremony at the end of August.

Eve, who lives Ravenshead, joined Girlguiding Nottinghamshire in 1985 as an adult helper at her daughter’s Guide Unit – 1st Larch Farm. She qualified as a Guide Leader in 1987 and gradually took on more roles and responsibilities within the organisation over the ensuing years, including appointments as District Commissioner for Ravenshead District, Division Commissioner for the Newstead Division and, from 2002 to 2005, Assistant County Commissioner.

For the last ten years, Eve has also been a regular volunteer in the Guide shop at county headquarters in Carlton, whilst she was the DBS Verifier for the county until 2014.

Eve said: “I feel very honoured to have been invited to become County President, but am somewhat daunted when I think of the fantastic job done by my predecessors.”

“I look forward to renewing many former acquaintances and making new friends along the way, and – as I promised when I joined Guiding – I will do my best to support and help wherever and whenever I can.”

Colwick Parish Council website hacked by ‘pro-Palestine’ group

Colwick Parish Council’s website has been taken over by a group of anonymous hackers, who say they are fighting the ‘misconception that Muslims are spreading terrorism’.

The group, which calls itself Anoncoders, took control of the page yesterday (Friday), meaning the site’s usual content is currently unavailable.

A message left on the page reads:

“This Is To Inform All And Everyone On The World, That Muslims Are Not Terrorists.

“It Is A Misconception That Muslims Are Spreading Terrorism , When In All Reality , The Governments Are Killing Innocent’s And They Are The True Terrorists.

“Islam Is Religion Of Peace And It Reaches The Most Peaceful Ways Of Living. Allah Is The Most Beloved To His Creatures In This World.

“The Most Beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W.) Was The Most Loving & Honest Person Which World Has Ever Seen.

“So, How Can His Followers Be Terrorists.

“An Insurrectionist Who Kills A Noncombatent Is A Guilty To Islam, Any Kind Of Violence Is A Capital Offence In The Islamic Laws So Surely One Can Say,

Residents relieved as city centre roadworks are completed

City centre roadworks – which have caused traffic queues into the city for Colwick and Netherfield residents – were completed today.

The completion of works to introduce pedestrian facilities and better road surfaces at the Manvers Street / Pennyfoot Street / Newark Street junction was marked by new traffic signals being switched on.

The scheme, completed today (Friday, 4) provides a signalised pedestrian crossing at this busy junction for the first time.

The need for this has increased as a result of nearby works to redevelop the former Sneinton Wholesale Market, investment at BioCity and the completion of improved pedestrian facilities at Southwell Road and Carlton Road earlier in the year.

Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Jobs, Growth and Transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “These improvements have caused some delays and disruption over a number of weeks and I must thank local residents, businesses and motorists for their patience during the short-term pain as many of them will benefit from the long-term gain.”
