A man has been arrested after reports that someone on crutches was trying car door handles in the early hours of the morning.

Police were called to Furlong Street at around 4am on Friday, August 14, following concerns about a man seen walking up and down the street allegedly testing vehicle doors.

Officers attended the area and located a suspect nearby. During a search, police reportedly recovered a screwdriver and a knife.

A 49-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of going equipped for the theft of a motor vehicle and possessing a bladed article in a public place.

Police say the arrest comes amid ongoing efforts to tackle vehicle crime across Gedling.

Inspector Steven King, Gedling’s local area commander, said: “We know vehicle crime is a concern for people across Gedling and recent months have seen localised increases in incidents of this nature.

“Neighbourhood teams have been working hard to educate residents on ways of avoiding becoming a victim of vehicle crime while investigations take place.

“We suspect a small number of offenders are behind these incidents, so this arrest is an important update to share with the community.”

He added: “We’d urge people to continue taking measures to avoid having their car stolen, or having items stolen from within them.

“By following a few simple steps, members of the public can make their own vehicles as safe as possible.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
