Android users in Gedling borough warned about malware that mimics popular apps like Facebook

Android users across Gedling borough are being warned about a new piece of malware that can mimic the look and feel of popular apps like Uber, WhatsApp and Facebook.

The Android malware is being spread across the borough via text message which reads “We could not deliver your order, please check your shipping information here” and is followed by a link.

Once users click on the link, the malware is installed on the Android phone. It then silently waits in the background for users to open the official app and then overlays a fake interface over the top.

Victims are then tricked into revealing their banking information.

In total the malware is designed to mimic eight separate apps, including WhatsApp, Uber, Facebook, Viber, Google Play and more.

The church dates from the 11th century, with the oldest part of the church (the entrance) dating back to 1089 – although there have been four other churches on this site, the oldest dating back to the year 678AD.

Our resident train expert, Tony Cave, provides a July update on the railways…

Carlton and Netherfield tickets

Tickets are valid at both stations, so you could go out from Carlton and come back to Netherfield and vice versa. This is a local East Midlands Trains (EMT) concession. If you have any problems then let me know as it does not appear in the fares manual. Off-peak fares are available after 8.30am from Carlton and 8.44am from Netherfield on Monday and Fridays and all day Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays. There are no evening restrictions on EMT, but some companies such as Northern (Arriva Rail North), do have weekday evening restrictions. If you travel fairly regularly on long distance, railcards will leave you money.

Current Timetable

Two corrections to the printed timetable leaflets (posters and websites ok). Table 7: Sundays – the 10.14 Skegness to Nottingham train also calls at Bottesford, Aslockyton, Radcliffe and Netherfield. (12.18) arriving into Nottingham at 12.25pm. Table 8 Saturday – the 19.47 Newark to Matlock train is as shown to Lowdham, then Carlton 20.08, Nottingham 20.16pm, departing. 20.20pm, Beeston 20.25, Attenborough 20.29, and as shown. All timetables I hand out at the stations have been amended.

Robin Hood Shoots The Kangaroo

The Kangaroo ticket is now the Robin Hood ticket and is available on trains, trams and buses the same as before. However, only the day and season tickets are valid on trains and not the ‘pay as you go’.

Weekdays at Carlton

One change to the new timetable. I missed off the 21.24 Nottingham to Lincoln now leaves Nottingham at 21.20pm. However, it still leaves Carlton at 21.30pm, so has a four-minute wait at Carlton. On Saturday it does leave Nottingham at 21.24pm. As for passenger numbers, a few more records have been broken. 20 joined the 9.05am train to Matlock on May 25. 15 joined the 11.08 train to Matlock on May 27. On June 6, six adults and four children boarded the 8.02am.

It takes a long time for people to realise there is an offer. A person in Carlton didn’t know there was a railway station in the town until they saw it mentioned on the online forum ‘Street Life’. “What? Trains from Carlton to Matlock?” is something I often hear so we still have a way to go to get the message out.

Netherfield Station

Radcliffe Parish Council have conducted some research and campaigned since last October fora better train service. This has included a meeting with Department for Transport and EMT reps with the hope of some improvement this December. We have been included in the campaign so will be included in any improvement to services Radcliffe may get.

What we need:

The Lincoln to St Pancras train to call at Carlton at 07.48am and 20.46pm on return. A train at 7.30am from Nottingham. The 7.35 Nottingham to Skegness calling at Netherfield could provide this service for work people travelling in or around our area. Direct train to Lincoln and back for leisure travellers. Carlton and Netherfield men jailed after St Ann’s drug gang exposed

Men from Netherfield and Carlton were part of a gang selling drugs in St Ann’s who were jailed after being exposed by Nottinghamshire Police.

A police operation began with test purchase operations in the area between September 2014 and January 2015. Further enquiries uncovered three illicit businesses dealing in heroin and crack cocaine, which were conducted almost exclusively over the phone.

The MD or Biggy line, which operated in the The Wells Road area; the LD line, in the Brewsters Road area; and another line, which dealt in the Sneinton area, and were identified.

Thirteen men were charged and convicted of conspiracy to supply heroin and crack cocaine.

They were sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday (July 1).

Campaigners rally to try and save Mapperley community centre from closure

Hundreds of people in Mapperley have signed a petition in a last ditch bid to save a community centre from being sold to developers.

Campaigners say Gedling Borough Council want to close down Haywood Road Community Centre and sell off the land so it can be used for housing.

The petition and Facebook page created by campaigners claims the council will make an estimated £450k from the sale.

But local people have said that the community centre and surrounding land is the only community space they have in the area.

Resident Wendy Alvay posted on the Facebook campaign page: “The young families in the community will lose a valuable centre for social events. All ages use this space including the senior members of the community for playing bowls.”

Annette Watts posted: “We need this lovely little building and the community space it offers and all the varied activities on offer. I have been to many events and parties there.”

Arnold boxing club proving to be a knockout success

An Arnold boxing club is on the hunt for new members to help build on the success of the past year.

The Arnold School of Boxing, which is the brainchild of boxing coaches Clinton McPhilbin and Robert Butler, has just completed a hugely successful season which saw them produce two regional belt winners and also put members forward for the national championships.

Now the club, which was named as Outstanding Community Project at the Pride of Gedling Awards, is hoping to attract more young people with an interest in the sport to help take the club to the next level.

Police searching for a man who robbed a Co-op store in Sherwood have released CCTV pictures of a man they would like to trace.

The robbery took place at the store on Mansfield Road on May 23.

Carlton Hill councillor issues hate crime warning following UK Brexit vote

A local councillor has condemned incidents of race hate crime  reported in the wake of the EU referendum and has said they have ‘no place’ in the borough.

Cllr Alex Scroggie, who represents Carlton Hill ward on Gedling Borough Council, today warned that he would do ‘everything in his power’ to ensure anyone found to be carrying out such crimes were dealt with by the authorities.

He told Gedling Eye: “Following last week’s EU referendum, I am concerned about the reported rise in racism, xenophobia and hate crimes.

Man arrested over attempted robbery at Colwick car showroom

A 35-year-old man has been arrested by detectives investigating an attempted armed robbery at a car showroom in Colwick

A man burst into NG Car Sales, on Colwick Industrial Estate, at about 5pm on Saturday, July 11,  threatening the business manager with the silver weapon.

The member of staff was able to flee out of a back door and the robber left the scene empty handed.

Police warning over fake letterbox scam

Fraudsters are thought to be harvesting bank details by glueing fake mail boxes outside people’s houses.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) is warning people in the borough to be on their guard after a rise in reports about the number of fake letter boxes appearing.

Residents are sometimes unaware of the fake boxes as fraudsters will often remove them for a short period of time to avoid detection.

These often leave noticeable marks.
