A local councillor has condemned incidents of race hate crime reported in the wake of the EU referendum and has said they have ‘no place’ in the borough.
Cllr Alex Scroggie, who represents Carlton Hill ward on Gedling Borough Council, today warned that he would do ‘everything in his power’ to ensure anyone found to be carrying out such crimes were dealt with by the authorities.
He told Gedling Eye: “Following last week’s EU referendum, I am concerned about the reported rise in racism, xenophobia and hate crimes.

“I strongly condemn such acts and they have no place in our borough, city and country.”
“I would like to reassure the residents of Carlton Hill ward, that I will do everything in my power to ensure that the council and police take action against those responsible.
He added: “If anyone is the victim of such crimes, contact the Nottinghamshire police, on 101.”
Police believe there has been an increase nationally in hate crimes and community tensions since last week’s referendum.
A recent report claims such crimes could have risen by 57% following the Brexit vote last Thursday.
