Courier scam warning to online sellers in borough

10

People in Gedling borough selling items online are falling victim to a new type of advance fee fraud, say scam busters Action Fraud.

The latest scam involves a fraudster – posing as a buyer – sending an email to the online seller (victim) which states they are prepared to pay the full asking price of the item they are trying to sell.

They state that they are unable to collect the item themselves and will arrange for a courier to pick it up instead.

The fraudster then sends a fake payment confirmation email from a different email address, one which falsely purports to be from a payment platform like PayPal.

In the course of the email exchange, a request is sent to the seller to pay the courier fee. Once the payment is made then contact is broken, the item is not picked up and the money paid for the “courier” is gone.

Bus firm announces plans to reduce Sky Blue 47 service when council funding ends later this month

0

Nottingham City Transport has confirmed their Sky Blue 47 bus will soon stop serving several villages in the borough when funding from Nottingham County Council is withdrawn later this month.

The service will no longer stop or pick up in Calverton, Oxton, Moor Lane Caravan Park, Epperstone and Lowdham once changes to the route take place.

The Sky Blue 47, 47A and 47B service is the only Nottingham City Transport bus to still receive money from the council.

Nottinghamshire County Council hope to save £420,000 a year by reducing their annual bus budget.

The 47 is operated on a commercial basis by NCT between Nottingham, Mapperley Plains and Lambley; Nottinghamshire County Council fund an additional bus on the route that allows it to extend to Lowdham.

Three buses currently operate on Sky Blue Line routes 46 and 47 and without the financial support from Nottinghamshire County Council, the bus company say the number of buses will have to reduce to two.

NCT say they have looked closely at passenger use on these services and will be able to maintain a commercial service between Woodborough, Lambley, Mapperley Plains and Nottingham City Centre, using the two buses available on a circular basis around Woodborough and Lambley.

An expert has offered advice to Gedling Eye readers on how to best catch a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower over the next few days.

Phil Randall, from the Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society, said people in Gedling borough could be in for a real treat this year.

He said: “The Perseid Meteor Shower is a regular shower which happens on the same nights each year as the earth travels through an area of dust left behind by Comet Swift Tuttle on its regular journey around the sun.

“The meteors themselves are only generally small grains millimetres across and we see them as they burn up in the upper atmosphere.

Fraudsters target car buyers online in Gedling borough

0

People in the market for a new car in Geding borough are being warned to keep an eye out for fraudulent emails when looking to buy vehicles online.

Victims have received emails claiming to be from ‘Amazon Payments’ or ‘Amazon Flexible Payment Services’ after agreeing to buy.

These claim to be bank accounts that hold the buyer’s money for one week before releasing it to the seller.

The emails are designed to get victims of the scam to pay upfront before visiting the seller to collect the vehicle, claiming they have a one-week cooling off period to reclaim the payment if they change their mind. This gives victims the false sense of security that their money is being looked after by a trustworthy third party.

Recycling registration reminder to Calverton centre users

0

People who use a recycling facility in Calverton are being reminded to register their vehicle with the council by September if they wish to continue using the service.

Nottinghamshire County Council, who run the site in Hollinwood Lane, is launching the registration scheme as part of plans to reduce costs by £200,000 each year.

The scheme aims to prevent people from outside the county using the council’s facilities. As well as saving money, the council say the move will also improve the quality of service by cutting down on waiting times for local residents.

Councillor Jim Creamer, chairman of the county council’s environment and sustainability committee, said: “Because of the closeness of many of our recycling centres to the borders of the county, a significant number of users come from outside Nottinghamshire

Pre-school pupils in Gedling bid farewell to ‘adored’ leader Sheila

0

A dedicated and “adored” pre-school leader stacked the chairs in the church hall for the final time last week as she retired after over 45 years in charge.

Sheila Aldridge started Phoenix Farm Pre-School at the Methodist church on Wollaton Road back in the early 70s.

Her own son was the first child to attend and was rapidly joined by other children in the area as word spread about the group Sheila had set up to give local parents a bit of a break during the week.

Sheila was joined on her final day by staff, parents and children at a party held to mark her final day as leader and also the end of the pre-school – which will now close following Sheila’s decision to retire.
