Cloud thickening through the morning, with any early mist or fog patches gradually lifting. Outbreaks of rain spreading southeast. Rain will be lighter and more sporadic elsewhere with many parts staying dry. Maximum temperature 7 °C.

Evening cloud and rain clearing south and east to give some clear spells. Rather chilly, with mist and fog developing, perhaps the odd rural frost patch by dawn. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Tomorrow will see any early fog soon clearing. Winds strengthening with outbreaks of rain spreading east. These heaviest around midday, and perhaps turning persistent across the Peak District. Drier across many eastern parts. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Decision to block demolition of Beacon Baptist Church in Arnold overturned

A disused Arnold church is due to be knocked down to make way for housing after a decision against the plan was overturned at an appeal.

Gedling Borough Council had rejected plans to knock down Beacon Baptist Church on Killisick Road in April 2023, with councillors saying it would be a “travesty”.

The building had closed due to water damage and the discovery of asbestos inside.

Applicants Direct Land Investment had hoped to knock the church down and build two detached homes and six semi-detached houses.

A total of 193 people signed a petition to save the facility, which previously hosted an after-school club, a jobs club and a Christmas fair.

The planning committee said it should be replaced with a new community centre for the area, rather than housing.

But the Planning Inspectorate, which decides appeals, has sided with the applicant, saying there were two other Baptist churches in nearby Daybrook and Mapperley that could play the same role.

It added: “Given the length of time that the premises have been closed, any parishioners have made alternative arrangements where necessary, so there is no need for replacement premises to be provided.”

The building was listed as an Asset of Community Value in 2021, meaning community groups would get the opportunity to express an interest in it if it became available.

However, no firm offer has ever been made, with the state of the building being a key issue.

Councillor Henry Wheeler (Lab) said in the 2023 planning meeting: “The Beacon was a very valuable community hub in Kilisick, an area with a lot of needs.

“It would be a travesty to see this turned into residential development.

“I am all for the building being demolished but I would like to see it replaced with a new community hub.

“There’s a desperate need in that area.

“That site has so much potential.”

Councillor Paul Wilkinson (Lab) said: “This is one of the most deprived communities in the borough and it is vital that appropriate resources are provided.

“We know what the Beacon site has been and what it could become again.”

The recent decision by the Planning Inspectorate is due to be discussed at the planning committee on Wednesday, February 28.

Petrol prices remain high across the country, as households across Gedling borough continue to be squeezed by the cost of living crisis.

Gedling Eye has compiled a list of the cheapest petrol pumps in Gedling borough. The data is sourced from PetrolPrices.com, which covers major service stations including brands like BP, Shell, and Texaco as well as supermarkets, smaller chains and independent stations.

The website combines price data from Catalist with its own crowdsource data, which comes from website users and forecourt owners. The site says it hopes to have “the most up to date and reliable price data across the industry”.

The UK’s average fuel price is 144.01p per litre for Unleaded and 152.57p per litre for diesel as of February.

Soon becoming fine tonight, with lengthy clear periods leading to frost and areas of freezing fog. Perhaps becoming cloudier to end the night in the northwest. Minimum temperature -2 °C.

Tomorrow is expected to start chilly, with freezing fog lifting during the morning as cloud and occasional rain make gradual progress southeast. Rain should fade later, perhaps allowing some late sunshine in the northwest. Maximum temperature 7 °C.

Fine this morning with hazy spells of sunshine after any fog and low cloud clears. While still mainly fine through the afternoon it will turn cloudier and breezier with isolated showers. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Tonight is expected to be widely dry with some clear spells overnight, though perhaps the odd light shower affecting northern counties. Rather breezy, especially in the south and east. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Tomorrow will be largely dry with sunny spells and a few, well scattered showers, these fading away by late afternoon. Breezy, windy at the coast but winds easing a little towards the evening. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

PLANNING REFUSED: Plans to turn Arnold care home into 30-bed HMO refused by Gedling planners.

Proposals to change the use of Ernehale Lodge Nursing Home, Furlong Street, Arnold to a 30-bedroom house in multiple occupation have been refused by Gedling Borough Council.

The application was been submitted by Peter Johnson Associates of Nottingham acting as agents on behalf of Arnold Point Limited.

The design and access statement completed by Peter Johnson Associates submitted to accompany the full planning application advised that Ernehale Lodge was a purpose built care home facility registered with CQC for 30 residents with nursing care requirements.

The refused proposal was for a 30 bed-HMO with a site area of 1178m2.

Planning documents advised that there was existing on-site car parking to the rear of the building (8 no. spaces) however there were no plans for additional parking at the property.

The design and access statement suggested that the future users were not expected to be car owners or users and thus secure cycle storage was to be provided with the proximity to the town centre and bus routes offering increased options for travel.

The Notice of Refusal from Gedling Borough Council dated February 21 stated that the intensification of the proposed use from a care home to a HMO to accommodate at least 29 people occupying a single building, with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities together with a limited amount of external amenity space would unduly impact on the amenity of neighbouring occupiers within a densely populated area through noise and disturbance.

Lowdham & District Village Mens Dart League RESULTS February 21

The Gedling Club made no mistake in Woodborough winning 5 – 1 against the second bottom team, The Nags Head in a week that saw them put clear daylight between themselves and the chasing pack as the second and third placed teams lost.

It was a good week for both Epperstone’s and Burton Joyce’s Cross Keys teams as both teams won on the road. Calverton Working Mens Club suffered a 4 – 2 defeat against Epperstone’s Cross Keys while the Burton Joyce Keys win against Calverton’s Admiral Rodney moved one of the leagues most consistent teams into joint second place.

With four points between The current champions and the three teams in joint second place it looks like it would take a massive collapse for The Gedling Club not to win back to back leagues. They do however they face a tough last three games of the season as they still have to take the trip to joint second placed teams Cross Keys, Burton Joyce and The Admiral Rodney in Calverton and also have a tough home game against Lowham’s Old Ship who are capable of beating anyone on their day.

With Calverton Working Men’s Club having played The Gedling Club twice already winning the league appears out of their control however they can still influence the outcome with return matches still to be played against their co-second placed teams.

Calverton’s Neil Lincoln continues to lead the 180 table with three so far while The Rodney’s P Cullen continues to lead the highest finish table with 158.

Round 14 of league re-commences on March 6 after the singles competition on Wednesday 28th February at CWMC with an 8pm sign in.  Players are asked to let your respective teams know and to come along and support the league.

Cash prizes and a spot at The Albert Hall up for grabs as Carlton Male Voice Choir’s 25th Annual Music Maker Competition is launched

Nottingham’s largest male voice choir, Carlton MVC, has launched its 25th Annual Music Maker Competition.

The competition is open to talented performers aged 16-20 based in and around Nottinghamshire.  The competition is for solo performers: singers or instrumentalists; any instrument and for any genre of music.

There are two cash prizes this year: £700 and £500.

The previous winners include three members of the fantastic Nottingham based Kanneh-Mason family: Konya, Braimah and Isata, as well as 22 talented other young musicians.

The overall winner will be awarded £700 and in what promises to be an amazing event the winner will be invited to perform at the choir’s summer festival concert to be held on June 22, 2024 at Nottingham’s prestigious 700 seat capacity Albert Hall. The evening will be extra special as the guest band at The Albert Hall will be top tribute band The Kinx.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the competition, this year sees the launch of a second prize: The Constance Shacklock Memorial Prize. This is named in honour of the Sherwood, Nottingham born singer who performed in venues around the world and ended her career as Professor of Singing at the Royal Academy of Music. This £500 cash prize will be awarded to the performer who shows the most potential.

Ian Watts, Carlton MVC’s Musical Director said “We are delighted to be able once again to support young talented musicians via our 25th Music Maker competition.  With two cash prizes on offer this year, and the ability for the winner to perform at our flagship Festival Concert in mid-summer, we hope this will encourage those eligible to enter the competition and show off their talent.”
