Arnold man asks Sunak and Starmer ‘Are you two really the best we’ve got?’ during televised leaders’ debate

Sir Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak were criticised during the final leaders’ debate of the general election by an Arnold man in the audience who asked: “Are you two really the best we’ve got?”

The Labour leader and Conservative Prime Minister went head-to-head during a feisty 75-minute debate broadcast live on the BBC on Wednesday evening.

Speaking at the event in Nottingham, presented by Mishal Hushain, Robert Blackstock, from Arnold, told Sunak: “I think you did a pretty good job of being Chancellor. You’re a pretty mediocre Prime Minister.”

And to Starmer, he said: “I think that your strings are being pulled by very senior members of the Labour Party. Are you two really the best we’ve got to be the next Prime Minister of our great country?”

The two politicians were put on the spot by the voter who summed up the lacklustre nature of the campaign as the country prepares to head towards the polls on Thursday, July 4.

Sunak said he understood “everyone’s frustration” and highlighted that while he had been Prime Minister inflation had come down and pledged “my primary job is to deliver economic stability so I can start cutting your taxes… allow me to finish the job”.

While Starmer stressed his record working “with the police in Northern Ireland as part of the work on the Good Friday Agreement”, running the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the way he said he had “changed” the Labour Party.

“I’m not surprised after 14 years of this that people feel this way because the country is in such a state… what I’m now asking for is the opportunity to change our country for the better,” he added.

‘Pride’ as Hogarth Academy in Carlton receives good Ofsted judgement

A primary school in Carlton praised for its ‘ambitious’ curriculum has received a ‘good’ Ofsted rating.

Hogarth Academy, which is part of L.E.A.D. Multi-Academy Trust family of schools, on Porchester Road, was also hailed by inspectors for being a school where staff are ‘determined to empower all pupils including those who are disadvantaged, to be well-prepared for the next stage of their education’.

The Ofsted inspection was carried out at the school in May 2024.

The report described the curriculum as ‘well-considered and adapted to best suit pupils’ needs’.

Pupils at Hogarth Academy celebrate after their school was handed a ‘Good’ rating by Ofsted inspectors

It said: “Pupils are enthusiastic to work hard and learn well, displaying positive behaviour for their lessons. They learn how to recognise and manage their emotions and receive extra support to make appropriate choices.

It also remarked that ‘reading is given the highest priority in the school’ through a well-stocked library to develop pupils’ love of reading and a strong phonics programme.

Sarah Lee, Headteacher at Hogarth Academy, said: “We are very proud of the elements highlighted in the report that show how Hogarth Academy is striving to provide all pupils with the opportunity to flourish.

“My colleagues and I are grateful to all the wonderful parents, carers and families we work with for their cooperation and support, as their engagement is instrumental in helping us to give our pupils the best opportunities to thrive.

“The team at Hogarth is committed to working alongside our colleagues at L.E.A.D. to continue to drive standards forward and ensure the school remains a happy place to learn and work.”

Parking law changes will see drivers given 10-minute grace period when time runs out

Motorists are set to be handed a lifeline thanks to new measures designed to help drivers benefit from “fairer” parking fine rules.

Drivers will soon be handed a 10-minute grace period when their time runs out at private car parks so that if they overstay their paid parking period by a few minutes then they should avoid a fine.

The changes are coming in after industry bodies the British Parking Association (BPA) and the International Parking Community (IPC) published a new code of conduct.

The two industry bodies are asking all private parking companies to implement the new rules by October 1.

Some 9.7 million parking tickets were issued by private firms between April and December last year – equivalent to more than 35,000 per day, according to the RAC Foundation.

The IPC said the move would “create consistency and clarity for motorists and continue to elevate standards across the sector”.

This legally-backed code of conduct was due to come in force by the end of last year but was withdrawn by the government after parking firms challenged it.

It would have halved the cap for most parking offences to £50, established a fairer appeals system and banned aggressive language on tickets.

The RAC has said they believe only way to truly stop unfair charges is by producing a code fully backed by the law.

The group’s head of policy Simon Williams, said: “Drivers shouldn’t be fooled into thinking this so-called code developed by the private parking industry itself is the same as the long-delayed official private parking code of practice that is backed by legislation.”

PLANNING: 9 bedroom HMO planned for Woodthorpe property

An application has been received by Gedling Borough Council from Rimmington Building Design & Consultancy Ltd. acting as agent on behalf of Mr Jag Landa of Nottingham to change the use of 7 Thackerays Lane, Woodthorpe, Nottinghamshire, NG5 4HT from a residential dwelling to a 9 bedroom House of Multiple Occupation (HMO).

A design and access statement prepared by Rimmington Building Design & Consultancy Ltd. states that the ground floor is proposed to consist of four bedrooms with a shared shower room, shared dining room and shared laundry room. One of the ground floor bedrooms will have an ensuite.

The first floor is proposed to have five bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Three of the first floor bedrooms are proposed to have an ensuite.

The maximum total occupants is stated to be ten people.

The planning application states that no parking is proposed with the change of use application.

The design and access statement states that ‘7 Thackeray’s Lane, Woodthorpe is on a residential street with on-street parking. There are various streets offering parking with no restrictions or requirements for permits. The garage offers space for motorbikes and pedal bikes. Due to the location of 7 Thackeray’s Lane, public transport is readily available and will be encouraged.’

Authorities need to crack down on ‘illegal’ e-scooters

Sir,

When are the authorities going to crack down on E-Scooters and E-Bikes?

They are illegal and are now like ants all over Arnold.

Streets, pavements, footpaths and even the town centre is inundated with them.

It’s bad enough we have cyclists ignoring every law and putting us in danger, now we have much faster more dangerous ‘vehicles’ endangering us. Enough is enough!

The police must take a stand and confiscate and destroy these illegal vehicles now. Do we really have to wait until someone is injured or killed for them to do their job?

L Watley,
Arnold

Pedestrianising Netherfield town centre wouldn’t work

Sir,

I write in reference to the suggestion by Ms Nesbit (‘Now time to pedestrianise Netherfield town centre – Readers’ Letters 13/06/24) that Netherfield is pedestrianised. This road is not a rat run. It was and still remains the main road through Netherfield even though some of it is one way. I use it a lot as a legitimate route from the Loop Road.

What is needed is an upgrade and installation of penguin crossings. Road safety was the subject of a petition to the County Council organised by Cllrs Hunt and Clarke, which so far has fallen on stony ground considering the lack of NCC’s response.

If the stretch of road described by Ms Nesbit is pedestrianised, it cuts the village in half. All traffic would be forced into the narrow and highly congested roads at the rear of the Coop.

Ms Nesbit wishes to encourage more cafes and bars to open. Netherfield has enough of those. We need shops that actually sell things – a difficult thing to have with the competition on the retail estate, but given the right product and promotion, it should be possible. If the owners of all those buildings cleared the grass from their guttering, the appearance would be improved.

I’m not sure what benefit a cosmopolitan vibe would achieve (whatever that is) but a more prosperous and lively commercial centre would be better.

Better use for bin lorries

I had to laugh to myself when I read on your website that the council were adding sensors to bin lorries to identify mobile signal ‘non spots’ (‘Bin lorries used to identify mobile ‘non spots” – Gedling Eye 20/06/24).

May I suggest a better use: have them record the location of potholes.

Fines for missed NHS appointments are a non-starter

Sir,

I really hope the next government don’t have plans to introduce fines for missed NHS appointments – it simply wouldn’t be fair.

There are many instances of appointment letters being wrongly addressed or not sent. Many missed appointments are because the person is unwell on the day. Getting through to the surgery or hospital is too often a nightmare.

I have personal experience of missing a flu jab because I had a fever and not getting through to the surgery reception until after the appointment time. That is still on my records as a missed appointment, because changing the record is low priority.

Patients with mental health problems are often not sympathetically dealt with and they need encouragement to attend appointments, not a threat to their already-inadequate support.

Imagine the time and cost of administering these fines if you were actually to check on which missed appointments were legitimate or not?

Because patients are often waiting anyway, most missed appointments just reduce the length of the queue. The NHS needs both additional resources and much better quality of management to reduce its serious inefficiency.
