A care home in Arnold was filled with joy on Friday, May 9, as residents, colleagues, and family members gathered to celebrate two remarkable milestone birthdays.

Mavis Clarke, a resident at Coppice Lodge Care Home and a cherished local centenarian, turned 100-years-old, while her great-great niece, Ella Goodwin, marked her 21st birthday, creating a unique and memorable family celebration.

Mavis Clarke, born Mavis Challans in Wilford, Nottingham, has lived a rich and inspiring life. Educated at Wilford Endowed School until the age of 14, Mavis began her career with the General Post Office at the Queen Street office in Nottingham, serving as a telegraphist during the war.

Her dedication often saw her working through the night to send and receive telegrams. In 1953, her exemplary service was recognised with the Coronation Medal from the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Mavis later joined the National Coal Board, working at the Housewarming Centre on Maid Marian Way and then at Eastward Hall until her retirement in 1986. After spending her early years with her aunt and uncle at the Nottingham Propriety Bowling Club on Addison Street, Mavis settled in Woodthorpe.

In retirement, she married Tom Clarke, a local widower, and together they enjoyed traveling, socialising, cruising, and being active members of the Sherwood Bowls Club, forging many happy memories. Sharing the spotlight was Ella Goodwin, Mavis’s great-great niece and a final-year History and Politics student at the University of Nottingham.

Ella, who turned 21, is looking forward to traveling with friends after completing her studies, embodying the spirit of a new generation with bright ambitions. The dual celebration brought together family members from near and far to toast both Mavis and Ella.

Kenneth Buxton, HC-One’s Coppice Lodge Care Home Manager, shared his delight:

He said: “It was truly special to witness Mavis and Ella’s milestone birthdays celebrated together. Mavis’s incredible life story and Ella’s bright future remind us all of the joy and connection that family brings. We’re honoured to have been part of this unforgettable day.”
