Warning to drivers in Gedling borough over car tax text scam

0

DRIVERS in Gedling borough are being warned not to click the link on a fake DVLA text message doing the rounds.

The car tax scam was reported on social media with several local people posting images of the dodgy text they recently received.

The scam message reads: “FINAL REQUEST: DVLA Swansea have been trying to contact you, Click below for more information.”

The link then uses the “dvla.gov.uk” domain in the web address – but some have noticed the “.pw” extension that appears in the web address.

‘.pw’ is the country code for Palau which gives away the fact the text is actually a “phishing” scam – and not from the DVLA’s Swansea HQ, which uses ‘UK

Phishing scams use fake official-looking website that ask you to enter personal information like bank details and addresses before stealing it.

The “final request” and mention of “car tax disc” hints that users may owe money on their car – even though the tax disc was abolished back in 2014.

But the DVLA has now confirmed it does not send out text messages with links asking for personal details or payments.

In a tweet, the agency wrote: “We are aware of a text/email scam, which wrongly claims to have been sent by DVLA, asking drivers to verify their driving license and vehicle tax details via an online link and are currently investigating. Please delete it without clicking on any links.

Kia and Mario seal weekend of success for Arnold School of Boxing

Two fighters from Arnold School of Boxing put on strong displays over the weekend to secure wins on the road.

15-year-old Kia Jones put on a great display in Skegness and earned a standing ovation from the crowd for a great performance which earned him a well deserved points win.

Also returning home victorious was 11-year-old Mario Charalambous, competing in only his third contest.

Mario put in a very strong performance and showed great skill for such a young boxer.

The youngster took the win and will now be focusing on the National Minors Championships which start on April  in Grantham.

MATCH REPORT: Chasetown 3-0 Carlton Town

A dismal first half showing by Carlton Town resulted in a 3-0 defeat at Chasetown, writes Alan Murphy.

The match was over by half-time as the Scholars scored all three goals in a dominant opening period.  Had it not been for Millers goalkeeper Jack Steggles, the deficit would have been even greater and the final score remained unchanged primarily because the home side eased off in the second half.

Wayne Scott made four changes to the side which lost last time out to Lincoln Utd.  In came Eddie Schoenecker, Kaylum Mitchell, Jordan Wilson and Niall Davie.  Out went Darol Lucas, Daniel Fletcher, Mamoke Akaunu and Tyler Blake.

Brandon Mutibvu played right back with Kane Baldwin moved to centre-half.

The home side started the sharper and took the lead on 11 minutes.  A corner from the left was flicked to the back post where Jake Lovatt found himself unmarked and fired past Steggles from six yards.

Steggles then did well to tip a Will Whieldon free kick onto the crossbar.

Mitchell fed Wilson in a rare Carlton attack that led to a free-kick.  Ben Hutchinson’s shot was saved and Chasetown immediately attacked, with Steggles again saving from Lovatt.

The Millers conceded possession at every opportunity and the Scholars poured forward.  George Cater ran through clean on goal only to be denied by Steggles.  The keeper then denied Whieldon and Carlton defended desperately to keep the home side at bay.

The defence was breached for a second time on 34 minutes.   A ball from the right by Whieldon was met by a Danny Cocks volley and flew into the Carlton net.

Worse followed four minutes later.  Cater did well to keep the ball in play when the ball and was played back to him he fired home through Steggles’s legs.

Baldwin then cleared a Jack Langston shot off the line before Lovatt headed against the post.

Scott made a double substitution at half time but the damage was already done.  Danny Elliott had Carlton’s only shot on target on 73 minutes but it was Chasetown who went closest to scoring in the second half, with Steggles saving well from Lovatt again.

Langston had Chasetown’s final effort on goal late on which flew just wide but the lack of home scoring in the second half couldn’t hide a desperately disappointing display by the Millers.

Carlton Town: Steggles, Mutibvu, Danquah, Schoenecker, Baldwin, Walker, Mitchell (Blake 46), Elliott (Pepe 81), Wilson, Hutchinson (Akaunu 46), Davie.  Bailey, Hooton.

Goals: Jake Lovatt 11, Daniel Cocks 34, George Cater 38

It’s the final straw! Netherfield pub bans use of plastic straws from its drinks

1

It’s the last straw – plastic that is – for a pub in Netherfield which is doing its bit for the planet.

It’s Inn the Bank at Netherfield after the boozer has called time on the use of plastic single-use straws in a bid to save the environment.

The venue on Victoria Road is now offering its customers innovative new biodegradable straws made using vegetable extract.

Plastic waste has been a hot topic nationally in recent months after its impact was highlighted in the BBC’s Blue Planet II.

Not long after the programme aired, a member of staff suggested to the pub’s landlord David Murphy that alternative eco-friendly straws were available, which prompted him into action.

Mr Murphy said: “Millions saw the effect plastic pollution is having on the environment from watching Blue Planet. It was shocking.”

Straws

“Once we were told about the straws it seemed like the right thing to do,”

“These straws biodegrade in six months rather than hundreds of years so they won’t add to the planet’s pollution
problems,” said Mr Murphy who, along with wife Nicola, also runs catering firm menus4venues.co.uk, which will also be using the environmentally friendly straws.

He added: “Our customers are environmentally aware so I’m sure they’ll welcome the change and agree that plastic sucks!”

The pub will join a number of other chains and independent venues in the region, and nationally, in banning plastic straws to reduce plastic consumption.

According to Greenpeace statistics, plastic straws are one of the top 10 items found in beach clean-ups.

JD Wetherspoons was the first chain of pubs to announce it will phase out the use of single-use plastic straw from all its UK and Ireland sites.

Eating out or getting food in? These are the CLEANEST takeaways and restaurants in Gedling borough

1

Having a takeaway or dining out in the borough this weekend?

Although it’s the zero and one-star restaurants and takeaways in the area that grab the headlines, Gedling borough also has its fair share of five-star hygiene rated outlets.

We’ve put together a list of all the five-star rated establishments in the borough that achieved the highest possible hygiene score.

Achieving five-stars is not easy and a health inspector will look at three criteria types during an inspection:

  • How hygienically the food is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored.
  • The cleanliness, layout, lighting and ventilation of the building.
  • How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe.

The Food Standards Agency says that to achieve a 5-star rating businesses must do well in all three elements.

Here are the cleanest takeaways and food outlets in Gedling borough (these were correct of the time of publishing).

Borough postcode named as worst area in UK for car vandalism

0

A postcode which includes villages in Gedling borough has been named as the worst place for car vandalism in the UK.

The study, carried out by car insurance firm Churchill, dubbed NG15 as the worst area for car vandalism in the UK. Edinburgh was named second.

The postcode covers Papplewick, Newstead and Ravenshead and was found to be the most likely area for intentional damage to vehicles.

No other Nottinghamshire postcode featured in the top 10.

Steve Barrett, head of Churchill car insurance, said: “This research proves that there isn’t a stereotypical area for vehicle vandalism and that it could happen anywhere.

“We want to highlight the top ten areas in order to raise awareness of the issue and to urge local law enforcement agencies to take further action to clamp down on vehicle vandalism. Ex-partner or unpopular celebrity, we want to be clear that there is never a good excuse to vandalise anyone’s property.”

When asked about professions, the study exposed how Brits would be least sympathetic towards footballers if their cars were vandalised, with one in three (33 per cent) feeling this way.

Other professions which could be deemed as least favourable include bankers (25 per cent), journalists (18 per cent) and taxi drivers (4 per cent).

Churchill offered the following tips to help deter vehicle vandals

  • Park smart – if you have a driveway or garage then make use of them and if these aren’t available, be sure to park in a well-lit place
  • Good neighbours – investing time in getting to know those around you has many benefits, including having people who can keep an eye out on your property if you’re away and who can alert you if they see anything suspicious
  • Perhaps an extreme measure, but anyone who is really concerned or has been a repeat victim of vehicle vandalism should consider CCTV. This works as a deterrent and could assist in identifying and bringing the perpetrator to justice

Gedling Conservative councillor resigns over party ‘irregularities’

A Conservative councillor has resigned from the party and become an independent after what she called ‘irregularities’ in the candidate selection process for councillors.

Now, a Conservative Party official has been drafted in to ensure rules are adhered to at the Gedling association.

A spokesman for Gedling Conservatives said they were ‘disappointed’ that the councillor had left, but that they are still on the lookout for ‘enthusiastic and hardworking candidates across the borough for next year’s local elections.’

The row emerged after the former Conservative councillor for the Plains ward, Sarah Hewson, left the party and decided to serve on Gedling Borough Council as an independent councillor over the way she says the selection process was run.

Councillor Hewson said: “This is not a decision that I have taken lightly, but came after months of reflection and disappointment in the conduct within the local party.

“When I got to the point of a lost sense of pride in the local party, then sadly there was no alternative for me but to leave.

“There were a number of issues that concerned me over time.”

A Gedling Conservatives Spokesman said: “Gedling Conservatives are currently selecting enthusiastic and hardworking candidates across the borough for next year’s local elections

“Although disappointed Councillor Hewson decided to withdraw from this process and resign from the party, we wish her well and the very best with future endeavours.

“A Conservative-run Gedling would deliver on the issues which really matter to local communities including making sure the voices of residents are heard over any new developments.”

Gedling Borough Council has been run by the Labour party since 2011.

RESIGNED: Cllr Sarah Hewson who represented Plains Ward

Tom Butcher is a member of the Gedling Conservatives, and a former county and district councillor, as well as being a former vice chairman of the party. He is also a former senior police officer.

He said: “It seems to have gone back to where it was a few years ago.

“I’m really upset because I thought we had got the association onto a good footing at least.

“I’m just peed off to see all this raising its head again. It breaks your heart.

“I just want to get the Conservative party back on its feet.”

Jeff Richardson is a member of the party. Speaking about sending in a party official he said: “It’s highly unusual. It should be completely open.”

The leader of the Conservatives at Gedling Borough Council is Councillor Chris Barnfather, who represents the Newstead Abbey ward.

He said: “I feel that the party did everything it could to accommodate Councillor Hewson, I’m not sure what more the party could have done because we bent over backwards.

“I genuinely wish her well, I’m always sorry when anyone leaves the party, and especially when they have contributed to it, but if councillor Hewson is happier to continue as an independent then so be it.”

The now-independent Councillor Hewson said: “This does not fit with Theresa May’s recent talk about the importance of transparency in the party.

“The world of politics carries a lot of important responsibilities – we are not talking about a tiddlywinks society, or a knitting club, so it’s very disheartening when some people in it behave unethically and spoil it for others.

“However, on a more positive note I am very much looking forward to being able to focus on the job in hand as Gedling Borough Council’s sole independent councillor, for the Plains ward.

“The needs of my constituents are far more important than those of any political party and I will now have more time to dedicate to them without the distraction of party obligations.

“As an independent councillor it’s more about what you can do for your constituents, rather than promoting a political party whose party line may not necessarily be in line with the needs of the residents.

“Other than that, my role remains the same at Gedling Borough Council, and it’s business as usual.”

Pets at Home to stop selling rabbits over Easter at Arnold and Netherfield stores

0

A pet store chain with branches in Arnold and Netherfield will stop selling rabbits over the Easter period over fears the popular pets could be abandoned.

The legend of the Easter Bunny has traditionally seen a massive spike in demand for rabbits as children’s pets – and as a result a ban on sales will come into force from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

Instead of selling the popular pets, the chain will be holding free workshops at its Arnold and Netherfield stores which teach people about their care commitments when becoming a rabbit owner.

Peter_Rabbit
PARTNERSHIP: Peter Rabbit activity sheets will be on offer at workshops being run by Pets at Home

The free workshops are taking place at the stores on Saturday, March 24 between 10.00-10.30am.

Places are limited but can be booked here: http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/easter-workshops

Peter Pritchard, CEO of Pets at Home, said: “Our decision to stop the sale and adoption of rabbits during Easter has been made to educate potential owners on the importance of responsible pet ownership. Our informative workshops will help families understand what’s involved in being a responsible pet owner. What’s more they’re also a fun and free way to learn about small furry animals and rabbits during the holidays.”

For more information and to read the full list of important considerations for prospective rabbit owners, please click here: http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/easter-workshops

Micropub in Newstead marks first anniversary with music festival

0

A micropub in Newstead is to mark its first year of pulling pints for punters with a three-day music festival.

The Pit Micropub has organised Microfest, which will take place between Friday and Sunday, March 23-25.

There will be 20 ales, lagers and ciders offer and an amazing line-up of artists including Cornish buskers Phat Bollard, The Ruffs and Shanks Pony.

Other groups on the bill include Thee Eviltones, The Immortal Rich and King of Rome.

The festival will mark the first anniversary of The Pit micropub, which opened to serve Newstead village – a community without a pub until the Tilford Road venue was opened by real ales lover Lorraine Horrocks 12 months ago.

Colwick office team step up for cancer charity challenge

0

A team of office workers in Colwick have stepped up to the challenge of each hitting a target of walking 10,000 steps a day in a bid to raise cash for a leading cancer charity.

Staff at Chapelle Jewellery, which has its head office on Colwick Quays Business Park, have just three weeks to achieve the number of steps it would take to carry out a tour all their stores across the UK – a total of 1660 miles.

Sarah Callaway, who is the firm’s e-commerce manager, said: “Chapelle Jewellery partnered with Macmillan Cancer Support last year and have undertaken various charity events from half marathons to cake sales and a swim-a-thon.

“This year the Chapelle Jewellery head office team have set themselves the challenge of walking 10,000 steps a day each over three weeks and complete enough steps to take a tour of all of our stores in the UK.

“The planned 1660-mile virtual route starts at their newest, and most Southern store – Gunwharf Quays and would see us visit each store in turn to end at the Livingston branch. The team’s steps will add up to complete this mammoth walk.

She added: “Being desk-based, it’s been quite a challenge to rack up 10,000 steps a day each and it’s been a real team effort. Many of the team are going to great lengths to ensure they hit the steps.

One of the team, Mark, has been walking four miles to work each day and some days he’s been walking back too and has been racking up an average of 17,000 steps a day. Georgia struggles to clock the steps up during work, but that hasn’t stopped her, she goes home, gets her dad and the dogs and sets off on what is quite often a two-hour walk. Sarah’s been boosting her steps by dancing around the kitchen as she’s making the tea, or whilst watching Emmerdale. And Pete has been walking his elderly neighbours dog, he bought an activity tracker and a treadmill

The Chapelle Jewellery head office team are now at the start of week three and have already raised in excess of £1300 for Macmillan Cancer Support and are determined to continue to raise funds for this important charity.
