The competition is open to talented performers aged 16-20 based in and around Nottinghamshire.  The competition is for solo performers: singers or instrumentalists; any instrument and for any genre of music.

There are two cash prizes this year: £700 and £500.

The previous winners include three members of the fantastic Nottingham based Kanneh-Mason family: Konya, Braimah and Isata, as well as 22 talented other young musicians.

The overall winner will be awarded £700 and in what promises to be an amazing event the winner will be invited to perform at the choir’s summer festival concert to be held on June 22, 2024 at Nottingham’s prestigious 700 seat capacity Albert Hall. The evening will be extra special as the guest band at The Albert Hall will be top tribute band The Kinx.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the competition, this year sees the launch of a second prize: The Constance Shacklock Memorial Prize. This is named in honour of the Sherwood, Nottingham born singer who performed in venues around the world and ended her career as Professor of Singing at the Royal Academy of Music. This £500 cash prize will be awarded to the performer who shows the most potential.

Ian Watts, Carlton MVC’s Musical Director said “We are delighted to be able once again to support young talented musicians via our 25th Music Maker competition.  With two cash prizes on offer this year, and the ability for the winner to perform at our flagship Festival Concert in mid-summer, we hope this will encourage those eligible to enter the competition and show off their talent.”

Deadline:   Entries must be submitted by the end of March.

Ofgem announces big drop in energy bills from April

Energy prices are expected to fall sharply in April, with the regulator Ofgem announcing the price cap will fall to £1,690.

This means a reduction of £238 (12%) from the current cap, £1,928 a year for a typical household.

It is the lowest level in more than two years, after post-COVID demand, a global squeeze on gas supplies and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent bills soaring.

The regulator’s price cap affects 29 million households in England, Wales and Scotland. Rules are different in Northern Ireland, where prices are also falling.

Ofgem sets the maximum amount that suppliers can charge for each unit of gas and electricity but not the total bill, so if you use more, you will pay more.

But even after any drop in the cost of energy, prices will remain above pre-pandemic levels.

Match Report: Carlton Town FC 5 – 0 Bridlington Town

NPL First Division East – 20 February 2024

Carlton Town bounced back in style from a run of three games without a win with a 5-0 thrashing of Bridlington Town at Stoke Lane.

After conceding seven goals in their last two games against Liversedge and Belper and then seeing three successive home matches postponed, the Millers were in danger of seeing the momentum fade from their so-far impressive season.  The supporters did their bit, coming to the ground in numbers throughout the day to make sure the pitch was fit to play on and the team responded with their biggest win of the season.  In fairness to Bridlington, although they defended poorly, they never gave up and did look a threat going forward.  The Millers will be just as pleased with the clean sheet as with the margin of victory.

Carlton made four changes from the side which had lost heavily at Belper, with Felix Annan, Lewis Durow, Lawrence Gorman and Micah Jebbison all starting in place of Nykah Liburd-Hines, Ryan Ebanks, David Adegbola and Niall Davie.  Durow and Jebbison were coming back from suspension while Gorman was making his first start of the season after a lengthy injury lay-off.   With Davie away, Khyle Sargent was named captain on his 100th appearance for the Millers.  Sargent sat in an advanced role in the middle, with Gorman and Greg Tempest behind him in what looked like an attacking 4-3-3 formation.

Brid came into the game still looking for their first win of 2024 but they had recently drawn with leaders Stockton Town and won the corresponding fixture last season.  But Carlton area a different beast this year and they came out of the traps on the front foot, with Durow heading a Gorman corner just over the bar in the third minute.

Three minutes later Carlton were ahead after some calamitous defending from the Seasiders.  Tempest’s clever Crossfield ball saw Hylton advance on the left with Jebbison and Alex Hardwick in support.  Goalkeeper James Hitchcock rushed out of his area to clear but his attempt cannoned off Hylton and dropped right in front of Jebbison who had 30 yards of space and no-one between him and the goal.  He duly took a touch and slotted home to score his first for the Millers.

Bridlington responded and Ali Aydemir went through on the right, only to be denied by the first of a number of fine saves from Annan.

Carlton doubled their lead on just 12 minutes.  Hylton earned a corner after a fine run and Gorman’s delivery found Sargent unmarked and he headed home at the near post.

Bridlington improved as the half progressed and Durow and Shea Thompson-Haris had good games at full back, dealing with the wide threat from the Seasiders.  Dani Hernandez pulled a shot wide from a good position, while Thompson-Harris made an excellent block from one promising Brid attack.

Annan was called upon again just after the half hour to save from Lewis Dennison but with 37 minutes on the clock the home side scored a third.  Hylton was again involved, attacking down the left before playing a pass to Hardwick.  He played the ball to Jebbison on the left touchline and he showed some delightful skill to beat Will Sutton before flicking an impudent chip to Sargent who fired home from eight yards.

Moments later it was almost four, but Hitchcock made a very good save from Hardwick after the striker had played a neat 1-2 with Sargent.  At the other end Annan made a superb save, this time from Jack Bulless, after Carlton had failed to clear a corner, and with the first half in added time Hernandez shot just wide as Brid vainly sought a way back into the game.

Gorman fired just over early in the second half following a training ground corner routine involving step-overs from Hylton and Sargent.  At the other end Bridlington continued to look dangerous and Hernandez fired just over after a quick counter attack.

Dan Brown and Dean Freeman were having their usual solid games repelling any threat and with 20 minutes remaining Carlton killed off whatever lingering glimmer of hope Bridlington may have had with a fourth goal.  Adegbola had only been on the pitch 30 seconds before he picked the ball up on the right, skiped past Sutton and crossed to Hardwick who converted from close range.

Bobby Attree then headed over from a good position before Carlton once again opened up the Brid defence and made it 5-0.  This time a Durow throw was flicked on by Freeman and Hylton flicked home from inside the six yard box.

Sutton had a late chance to grab a consolation but missed his kick before the referee ended Bridlington’s misery.  Carlton left the pitch to well-merited applause from the home faithful.  It was an excellent display.

Carlton Town: F Annan, S Thompson-Harris, L Durow, D Brown, D Freeman, G Tempest (M Ford 60), L Gorman (A Howes 79), K Sargent, A Hardwick, M Jebbison (D Adegbola 69), N Hylton.  Unused Subs: N Liburd-Hines, P Dearle

Woodthorpe and Ravenshead roads to be resurfaced in £4m overhaul

Two of Gedling borough’s busiest roads are to benefit from a £4m fund announced by Nottinghamshire County Council that will pay for major resurfacing work across the county.

Nine new road maintenance schemes were announced yesterday (22) at the County Council’s Full Council meeting.

A6211 Thackerays Lane Roundabout and parts of Arno Vale Road in Woodthorpe and the B6020 Kirkby Road in Ravenshead were the two borough roads listed for the resurfacing works.

The final decision on these proposals will be taken in mid-March when the 24/25 Highways Capital Programme report is approved. It is envisaged that works will begin in early summer of 2024.

The £4m is on top of the £29m of investment already planned for 2024/25 to improve the county’s roads.

The council said full plans including the sections under repair will be published ahead of the works.

Councillor Neil Clarke MBE, cabinet member for transport and environment, said the good news on the extra investment was further evidence there was a Highways maintenance plan going forward and one that he was committed to.

Cllr Clarke said: “While we’ve had to focus on the essential severe weather damage and emergency repairs of late, this funding serves as a reminder that we are still committed to our strategy of making ‘right repair, first time’ permanent repairs wherever we can.

“We are listening, and the decision to focus on these nine areas is based on feedback and reports we’ve received from residents as well as data and inspection reports from our highways partner Via East Midlands.

“We will still be undertaking permanent repairs wherever we can and will continue with large-scale patch repairs, putting a particular focus on well-used roads over the coming months.”

Council Leader Cllr Ben Bradley MP added: “We know how important the roads are to residents and they’re a priority for this council as well.

“This multi-million pound investment will deal with repairs to some of the county’s busiest roads and shows our commitment to doing everything possible to get more resources and funding to tackle this huge ongoing challenge.”

Large-scale patch repairs are part of the council’s four-year Highways Improvement Plan which includes the aims to reduce the need to use reactive short-term maintenance, maintain the road network condition and seek to improve it within financial constraints and to publish a longer-term programme of capital works to keep residents informed of future plans.

EVENT CINEMA: Exhibition on Screen: Painting the Modern Garden- Monet to Matisse – Bonington Cinema, Arnold

Tue 27 Feb – Wed 6 Mar, Various Times £12.50pp

Based on the sell-out show at the Royal Academy of Arts, London

Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists, along with many other famous names, feature in an innovative and extensive exhibition from the Royal Academy of Art, London.

From the exhibition walls to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny and Seebüll, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract colour, decorative design and utopian ideas. Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, this remarkable collection of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century will reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring fascination with gardens today. Long considered spaces for expressing colour, light and atmosphere, the garden has occupied the creative minds of some of the worlds greatest artists. As Monet said, ‘Apart from painting and gardening, I’m no good at anything’.  For lovers of art or lovers of gardens, this is an ideal film.

Plans revealed for new enterprise space in Arnold’s AMP centre

A new enterprise centre is on the cards for Arnold after Gedling Borough Council today revealed plans to transform the vacant first floor of The AMP into a space for budding entrepreneurs.

A report has been published by the council revealing that it plans to allocate a significant investment of £655,000 into fitting out the vacant first floor of the building to boost economic growth and provide a space for offices, conference and training room in the heart of the town.

The AMP was opened by Gedling Borough Council on the former Arnold Market site in 2022 and is already home to a number of small businesses on the ground floor.

The council said it always had plans to develop the first floor space and the project has received £655,000 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund so that work can begin and is expected to be completed by the Autumn.

AMP in Arnold
The AMP was opened up in Arnold last year

The AMP was built on the former site of Arnold Market in the town centre

The project is expected to support several of the council priorities including revitalising town centres, support economic growth and creating jobs in the area. It will also increase footfall to the town shopping precinct and support the existing businesses in the area.

The council has also recently announced investment plans in the northern part of the town with the purchase of vacant units and the creation of a masterplan for the entire town centre with the aim of attracting investment opportunities following the disappointment of not receiving any UK Government Levelling Up funding in the latest round of bids.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke MBE said: “We’re delighted to be announcing the next phase of work to create an enterprise centre here at the AMP.

“We want to create a space where we can support local businesses, start ups and entrepreneurs who need office space in the centre of a busy town centre like Arnold.

“We’ve seen how successful our investment to build the AMP building has been. The ground floor has been as all seven units are currently full against a backdrop of difficult economic times for so many.

He added: We are doing everything we can to bring people to the high street, including continuing to offer two hours of free parking in all our car parks and now with this work to transform the first floor, it will create more jobs and support growth in the borough.”
